I'm not advocating for violence or taking their actual human rights away (no, "I deserve that you have sex with me" or "I deserve to be in a changing room with you because seeing your nudity validates me!" do not count as human rights), I approach the individual person with an open mind and judge them on their words and actions, what else is there? Trans people get the same basic respect as any other random person, they're not special.

I think women having to always be overly "respectful" (i.e. having to act like trans people are more oppressed than women and their opinions count more) and not ruffling any feathers has really hurt us, in the face of TRAs completely steamrolling large parts of the feminist movement and women's spaces. Women have been far too self-effacing and nice to TRAs, it's brought us to this point. This constant questioning of "how to make sure I'm not being hateful?" (just because we don't want our boundaries crossed and safety risked) isn't something TiMs worry about, that's for sure.

Yep, I saw an article on Die Zeit yesterday, an interview between a male journalist and a 62-year-old TiM, head of a tv programme, who "bravely" came out now that he's the boss of an entire syndicate and everyone in the mainstream falls all over themselves to champion to trans issues.

That doctor never harmed or shamed the TiM patient in any way, in fact I think there was some real human concern for the patient. Finding a doc like that when I've had actual medical issues (that were not a choice like taking hormones because you're a guy who wants boobs) has often been difficult and the ones that take their time are a godsend.

Couldn't agree more. It's not more authentic, unless you're a brainless idiot you already know that women have stretch marks/cellulite/rolls/wrinles/hair on their body, it's just instagram advertising finding a new niche that they can wring some money out of. It's not aimed at men to get them to stop shaming women with unrealistic beauty standards (they're too busy jerking it to bikini pics of underage girls on insta anyway), it's aimed at insecure women who are more likely to spend their money with companies that give them the feeling they're "celebrating" their natural bodies. If this advertising trend doesn't work out for them they're right back to airbrushing everything.

I personally don't care if the models of the online shops I frequent have clear skin, cellulite or scars or whatever, but 99% of the models there are still size 00 and1.80m tall, I would actually appreciate if they had more average body types so the clothes won't fit completely different on 99.9% of their female customers. That would be a pragmatic change in my eyes.

To add to that, I'm convinced that this attempt to keep feminism toothless and palatable to the masses is in the interest of the status quo/patriarchy in general. Women that are dissatisfied with ongoing inequality and male violence can be turned toward this "easy, positive" feminism that soothes them with a loving community where they feel they are heard and never made uncomfortable. There, they are dissuaded from becoming radical feminists because "that's bigotry! transphobic! hateful!". This pop feminism is vastly supported by all sorts of corporations and politicians, because they like good little consumers, the last thing they want is difficult topics, disagreements or boycotts. You can't make money with unsexy concepts like "fight oppression on the basis of sex" or facts like "96% of prosecuted domestic violence is committed by men", but you can make money with things like rainbow-colored products and mindless entertainment that pays lip service to feminism.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but where did I say men don't do online roleplaying like that? They're AGP and they do. The episode took it to the next level in that the two men were actually able to have a form of tactile sex in their new identities. You and user Morningmist both replied to me with "but these men exist/they do this!" like we're in disagreement, so now I'm thinking maybe I phrased something wrong. My basic points were that the plot is dumb, it's all a male fantasy, and the woman in the episode "wins" by not being pathetic, haha.

Good article. I've felt more and more in the last 10 years or so (possibly it was going on long before then and I wasn't paying attention) how feminism online has devolved into this "feel good" hobby for women, where we complain about a couple of "simple" injustices, everyone agrees, it's very black and white, and on top of that we can buy "feminist" merch with cute "girl power!" slogans from all sorts of companies. I felt mildly uncomfortable about it before the TRA wave hit, but now the dark side of this pop feminism has really reared its lazy, shallow, male-pandering head.

It's not allowed to actually ask uncomfortable questions or express conflicts that go against the pop feminism trend. It's why people were so shocked when JK Rowling suddenly went against the approved flavor of discussion and actually in depth against one of the biggest current "trends" (which is to mindlessly post "transwomen are women <3" to a chorus of the same), because until then JK Rowling was seen as sort of a pop feminism icon: not at all radical, popular without question, she gave us nerdy-but-cool hermione (a girl being the sidekick is good enough, right?) and her rags-to-riches story seemed to signal the soothing message "women can do it all!".

Radical feminism has been turned into this dirty word, like it's now hateful in online feminist circles to not always seek male (clothed as women) approval for your "activism". If it can even still be called activism when mainstream feminism has been so neutered and commodified.

The most pressing thing that I see weighing on you is your FIL basically sexually harassing you and the lack of support from your partner. You absolutely should not be around that man, reject your SO's attempts to "keep the peace" or for you to meet for any reason (miss family get togethers if you must) and get him into therapy for childhood abuse. My father was/is abusive and I cut all contact with him, despite my mother always badgering me to "just get along with him". You may love someone and they may love you, but you cannot let yourself be manipulated into dangerous (for your mental or physical health) situations.

NB started a few years after intersectional feminism was misunderstood in woke online spaces as a privilege ladder. I agree, insulting someone you're having a polite discussion with is wrong and I also really like this space and how we interact. Honestly, people being super-rude online and exploding in rage at minor disagreements is something I consider a "man problem", lots of dudes never learned to control their emotions and they quickly turn to hatred and threats when they get frustrated. We're not like that and GC being mainly female is a big reason, IMO.

That being said, I think it holds us women back when we always HAVE TO be polite and civil no matter what. I've seen inappropriate tone policing here a few times, and a couple of days ago I got a comment saying "this makes us all look bad" when I commented that a TiM (who had disseminated leaflets asking for TERFs to be punched in the throat) was just jealous of women's throats because he had a fat manly neck. Which, sure, isn't nice to say but this guy was literally instigating violence against women. I dealt with my anger at this by joking about his motives and I don't think we have to be perfect angels all the time. My opinion is also just my own, women are not a hivemind, if you don't like my comment it still cannot "make us all look bad".

TRAs will not give us an inch no matter how nice we are, and "the mainstream" barely cares about women's issues anyway. Early suffragettes fighting for their rights literally got into fist fights with men who wanted to stop them from protesting and extreme civil disobedience was a main tool in reaching their goals. Now of course this is a far cry from how we act toward each other, but we are not emotionless nice little ladies all having a tea party together. We are here because we're angry at injustice. Perfectly behaved fembots is how men want women to be, and we have to accept that things might get a little heated here sometimes.

About your last point, that has never made sense to me either. That's why TRAs want people to label themselves as cis vs. trans, so they can put them in the category they can instantly dismiss and talk over.
