Yes, it’s the use of gender in place of gender roles that’s the source of the problem. Most people use sex/gender interchangeably, so I’m not sure why second wave/radical feminists thought they could use the word to mean something else and not confuse people. It’s easy to see how the constant refrain of “abolish gender” and “gender is a social construct” by feminists got taken to mean “abolish sex” and “sex is a social construct” when the two words literally mean the same thing to most people. I’m not sure why the term gender was created and insisted upon when gender roles suffices. It’s very strange how the ardent radical feminists on this site don’t seem to understand how the use of the word gender the way they use it is problematic.

[–]mangosplums 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What I’m saying is that the reason they use the wrong definition of gender is because gender originally was just a synonym for sex until Judith Butler chose to change the meaning. Outside of academic and feminist circles, the word gender is still used as a synonym for sex regularly. You can’t attempt to change the meaning of a word that already has a meaning without expecting confusion, and people continuing to understand the word by its original definition.

[–]mangosplums 7 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

But they refer to gender roles with just the word gender, that’s the problem. There’d be no problem if they said gender roles, but they don’t. Gender was originally a synonym for sex, and that’s how most people still use the word, so when radical feminists use gender in place of gender roles, they just confuse people.

Exactly. This is what the actual truth is. Sex is a real thing, it exists in material reality, you can see it. “Gender” is just some crap someone made up. Radical feminists and TRAs are both guilty of subscribing to this fake idea called “gender”. It’s almost a religious term. Radical feminists keep talking about how they subscribe to material reality, but they don’t because they believe in the concept of gender which is not rooted in material reality.

My unpopular opinion - Gender and biological sex mean the SAME thing by [deleted] in LGBDropTheT

[–]mangosplums 17 insightful - 1 fun17 insightful - 0 fun18 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Without the concept of gender, you cannot identify as anything other than what your biology is. If you have a penis and facial hair, your sex is male/man and if you have a vagina and boobs, your sex is female/woman. If you are uncomfortable with your sex, you can attempt to change it through hormones and body modification, but you obviously can never fully do it. It’s the creation of the concept of gender that creates two categories, one tied to the body and one not tied to the body. There doesn’t need to be a category not tied to the body at all. Before Judith Butler (a second wave feminist) reappropriated the word gender, it was just a euphemism for sex. It was used because people were too prudish to actually say the word sex. It should have just stayed a euphemism for sex, because the other meaning is hogwash.

[–]mangosplums 13 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 0 fun14 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It’s not an important concept. It literally just means sex roles and people could talk about everything they want to talk about by using the term “sex roles”. Since gender is a synonym for sex, all you do by using the term gender, when what you really mean is sex roles, is confuse people. When people hear “gender is a social construct”, they don’t understand that what you mean is sex roles are a social construct. They think you mean that sex itself is a social construct because the word gender is a synonym for sex. That’s how you arrive at people thinking it’s possible to identify as a different gender. Because using the term gender the way that radical feminists use it creates a separate category that isn’t tied to biological reality the way that sex is obviously tied to biological reality.

It’s second wave feminists like Judith Butler who created this imaginary separate category she referred to as “gender”. It’s not a thing. Gender is actually just a synonym for sex and it was a huge mistake for radical feminists to attempt to change the meaning of that word.

I completely agree with you. Radical feminists using the word gender don’t realize that they are contributing to the problem by ascribing to that idea and using that word. There is no such thing as gender. There is just sex and then cultural expectations put upon people because of their sex which are often referred to as sex roles. There’s no such thing as some separate thing category called “gender” and by believing that there is you are contributing to the problem. All you are doing is convoluting the discussion and divorcing it from material reality because this made up thing called “gender” that radical feminists like to refer to doesn’t actually exist.

I agree that many people here, maybe even most, believe that some trans are legitimate, but there’s a large percent of very active and vocal people that don’t believe any trans person is legit. I would say that the radical feminist philosophy doesn’t think any trans person is legit because they think all trans stuff, even the most severe, is based on sexist stereotypes. That it doesn’t matter how many hormones you take or whether you’ve flipped your penis inside out or not, or how severe your dysphoria is, you are still a man and blah blah blah. I understand their point of view, I just don’t agree with it. So even if a large percentage of people on this site don’t align stringently to that viewpoint, that viewpoint is still the cornerstone of this site and the most active posters and the people who run the site adhere to it.

I also agree that GC is the lesser or two evils. If I didn’t think that I wouldn’t continue coming here.

Thanks for this. I agree with you that most people go along with the TRA agenda because they just don't realize yet how toxic it actually is. They think "TERFS" are making it up. I wish JKR had included citations and links to examples of the things she talked about in her essay because it's easy to read her essay and dismiss everything she talks about as "that never actually happens" which is why I believe so many people can read her essay and think the things she talks about aren't actually happening and that she's exaggerating and mischaracterizing things. The TRAs are doing a really good job right now of suppressing and censoring any evidence of this stuff, so the mainstream just does not believe it's going on. I'm just quietly waiting until it hits the mainstream, because it will. I just watched that video of the girl from tiktok who said that it's ok for lesbians to say they don't like dick, and then the video of her apologizing for saying that and for using the phrases "male genitalia" and "female genitalia" because she didn't realize that those terms were hateful and hurtful terms. There's no way that this kind of insane rhetoric and bullying can uphold itself in the mainstream. As the TRAs rhetoric gets more and more mainstream we will see people finally realizing. I'm just sitting back and twiddling my thumbs till it happens.

I also feel caught in between because I believe that some trans people are legitimate. The two sides are either all or nothing. Either there's no real trans people, everyone is the sex they were born in, even if they've gone through a full transition and have lived as the opposite sex since young adulthood, or everyone can just choose their gender and there's no such thing as sex. Both sides are so extreme. I feel uncomfortable around either group. I keep leaving this site and coming back because I'll read comments here that I disagree with so thoroughly, or comments from people who truly seem to just be bigots. It's really uncomfortable. But then I see the same from the other side, which is now the mainstream left. Both sides seem to be unreasonable to me and have authoritarian tendencies.

I agree generally with this comment, but I have a question about one part-

Ironically-- the straight people claiming to be LGBT (among nonbinary trans, medically transitioning trans, late bloomer lesbians, bisexuals, asexuals, etc.)-- are far more likely than us to have had secure relationships and attachments, growing up. They're less likely to have been abused by highly manipulative people in the first place. And I kind of wonder if that's part of why some find it impossible to see LGBTQ+ in any sort of bad light. They just haven't had that experience yet.

Aren't the straight people claiming to be LGBT the ones who are being manipulative though? So they aren't the ones who are being misled, it's the actual gay people who are. And I do agree the people generally probably haven't had an experience with people who are this manipulative before and do not recognize it for what it is.

I’m not the Op you asked the question to, but from what I can tell most real trans people have severe dysphoria and have had it since they were children, and have therefore taken hormones and/or surgery to deal with it, to them that is an essential part of being trans. These days you don’t even have to have dysphoria to ID as trans, or any desire to change your hormones or body, all you have to do is say you are trans and you must be believed, that’s the dogma. It’s undermining to people who are actually legitimately trans, who have suffered because of it and want to be respected and taken seriously.

You may be right, I don’t know that much about the Jenner case. I definitely am skeptical about men who are hyper masculine who then say they are actually super feminine and were just pretending to be hyper masculine the whole time. I don’t think it works that way. If you are truly feminine, you won’t be able to hide it, you don’t react by becoming hyper masculine to combat it, you just are a very effeminate man and it shows in everything you do. Even if it is true, and it’s not AGP, and you just want to embrace a feminine side, it shouldn’t be seen that you are a woman now. You can’t be after all those years as a man. If only they’d accept that they are trans women and be respectful of women, there’d be no problem.

That is definitely also one of them though I don’t know the percentage breakdown for these catagories... I also think that a man who simply wants to explore a girly side, sometimes feels the need to “become” a woman in order to do so. It shouldn’t be that way. People like Caitlyn Jenner or the Wakowski siblings, I don’t really care about them transitioning, but I do care about that everyone takes seriously the idea that they are women now and that they should be speaking on women’s issues and being included in women’s symposiums and counted in women’s statistics. They have had the successes they’ve had in life because they’ve lived their lives as men. It’s disingenuous to see them as women. The Wakowskis are now seen as the most successful women in film.... because they aren’t women in film. If we just recognized that trans women are a different category than women and trans men are a different category then men, it’d be fine.

Yes and saying that sex and gender are different paves the way for the whole self ID stance of the trans movement. It used to be called being transsexual because it was about the desire to change one’s sex, one’s body. You couldn’t be trans unless you had changed your sex. With the creation of gender, it no longer has to be about the body, because gender is seen as separate from the body. The entire idea of gender is completely stupid, there’s no such thing, it’s a made up imaginary thing in the sky, just like god or the devil is a made up imaginary thing in the sky. All we are is our bodies. Everything else that people call “gender” is just our individual personality traits.

Feminism created the term "gender", when what they really meant was "sex roles". Why was the term gender created at all? Because feminists were trying to divorce the roles that men and women play, who we are, from our biology. Feminists argued those roles weren't based on biology at all, they are only based on socialization. That was the entire aim of Judith Butler and what radical feminists argue. That it's all socialization. This is false though. Sex roles are based on the assumption that women will grow to be mothers and men, fathers. Because women are the ones who give birth to children, qualities such as being nurturing have historically been highly valued and encouraged in women, and qualities such as being a provider have been highly valued and encouraged in men. Women didn't go out and work because they couldn't, because they were too busy making babies. All of this is based on biology. Of course, people shouldn't be forced to do things they don't want to do just because they were born a certain sex. Not everyone wants to have their life focused around popping out babies, and with technology, birth control and so many thing, we can make babies in different ways today than we used to be able to, and it just changes so much about our lives and who we can be. So people need not live lives based on sex roles if they don't want to.

With that said, the essentialism in sex dysphoric transexuals makes sense. If you were born having qualities that fit really well with the things that the opposite sex body is made to do, and fit really poorly with the things that your body is made to do, having feelings that you're in the wrong body makes sense. If you're a boy who is extremely nurturing and gentle, you probably know instinctively from a very early age that you have all the qualities to make a great mother, and to do the things that people who have soft, nurturing bodies do. Therefore being a man with a hard strong body feels wrong and being a woman with a soft gentle body feels right. That's why extremely feminine gay male transexuals and extremely masculine butch lesbians who transition make sense. The contrast is just too strong between their personality and the things their bodies are made to do. That is not to say that any woman or man who has qualities that don't go well with their body's sex role, should switch sexes, of course not. Just that it makes sense how acute body dysphoria can develops for individuals in which this is extreme, and that switching sexes actually makes sense for them. These types of trans people I have zero problem with and I support fully.

What does not make sense is men who aren't extremely feminine wanting to become women, or women who aren't extremely masculine wanting to become men. Also people transitioning who haven't been longing to be the opposite sex since childhood. A butch trans woman just makes no fucking sense. There's no need for them to transition in the first place, their personality fits well with their original biology. Where is the motivation to transition coming from for them? Where is the body dysphoria coming from? Do they even have body dysphoria?

I can't say I've ever met anyone in my daily life who has a strong fondness for anime like these people. Or really anyone who has a moderately well-paying job, confidence, and good social skills.

Before transitioning to become a cute anime girl they could oh idk lose weight or build muscle, research how to dress smart, practice good hygiene, and be physically active with hobbies outside the internet and see if that helps their crippling self esteem and depression? It’s never a functional person fantasizing about this shit it’s always someone who doesn’t take care of themselves.

I'm probably the rare woman who agrees with this. I've been trying to explain for a while how using the term "gender" is harmful. Radical feminists and trans theorists use it, and I think it's harmful in both cases. It was Judith Butler, a second wave feminist, who coined the term. There's a reason that her writing is dense, overly academic and hard to parse. Because she made up unnecessary convoluted terms that do more harm than good. What she really meant was "sex roles" and she could have stuck with using that phrase. It's had a real damaging effect to create this imaginary category called "gender", especially when the word gender is often used interchangeably with the word sex. The average lay person doesn't understand there's a difference in meaning between the phrase "gender is a social construct" and "sex is a social construct" because the terms sex and gender have historically been used to mean the same thing. Second wave feminists constantly preaching that "gender is a social construct" or "let's do away with gender" have inadvertently paved the way for people to start believing that sex is a social construct and that we should do away with sex since most people don't understand the difference between gender and sex. I've tried explaining this in gender critical before and most people didn't get what I was saying. Creating the idea that there's this thing called "gender" at all is what has kicked off the whole trans movement and self ID and all that. I think it's a really stupid term and people should say what they actually mean which is that they disagree with sex roles.

Masculinity is toxic/problematic/immoral/otherwise stigmatized

The thing is that "toxic masculinity" is supposed to be mean a certain subtype of masculinity, a subtype where violence is valued over working things out, and where any type of empathy or affection is devalued or seen as bad etc. We should be recognizing this type of masculinity as a bad thing and trying to move away from it as a society. It's not helpful for men or women. The problem is that people haven't differentiated or understood that it's not all masculinity that's bad, it's just one type of masculinity. And I completely see how this has morphed into people viewing masculinity in general as bad, and how this negatively affects men. I also tried to explain this in gender critical awhile ago, but they didn't get it. I tried to explain to them that the words "masculinity" and "femininity" were just defined by "the qualities associated with males" and the "qualities associated with females". As long as men exist, you can't do away with masculinity, because men, by definition, will always be masculine. Just like women will always be, by definition, feminine. Different qualities across time have been associated with different sexes depending on the culture (of course there are always going to be qualities that are tied to one's physical body and those are cross cultural). If you create a culture that socializes men better, provides better examples of what masculinity can be, the toxic type of masculinity can go away or at least lessen, and better qualities can be associated with masculinity. But you can't ever try to eliminate masculinity, the only way to do that is to have no males, hence so many males wanting to become female.

As for Jordan Peterson, of course gender critical women are not going to embrace him, he's said so many things that are extremely misogynistic.

Lastly, many people here are blaming feminism for the bad state of sex relations today and are not looking at the role that porn plays in this. It has drastically negatively affected the way boys develop and the way that men and women relate to each other. And many TIM become that way because they watch too much porn and start focusing on the fantasy of becoming a woman. Of course most men don't want to admit the negative effect porn has had on society, it would be like giving up a drug for you all to give up porn. But it's way way way more to blame than feminism is.

I completely agree. My problem is with the self-ID demands of the trans movement. I don't have any problem with people who've had real persistent body dysphoria their whole lives, who are respectful of women/girls and who have no real mental issues, other than their being trans, if you consider that a mental issue. The problem is this insistence that there needs to be zero gate-keeping and that everyone who IDs as the sex opposite to what they were born with is equally legitimate. So someone who has a history of sexual assault, harassment and violence towards women, who has no actual body dysphoria or intent to change their body, and who has a history of serious mental illness is considered just as legitimate as someone who has real, persistent body dysphoria, who's fully transitioned, has no psychological conditions and is respectful to everyone. The fact that these first types of people exist and we are being forced to accept them into women's locker rooms, lesbian groups etc really harms the people who are truly trans and of course women as well. The fact that every story of the first group of people is being removed, deleted off the internet and bullied into silence, and there's a campaign to ostracize and attack anyone who talks about it, and this insistence that "this never actually happens" is going on is very similar to censorship that authoritarian regimes engage in. It's very disturbing.

Doesn't this person realize that if the dick belongs to a trans woman, she'll get the same exact pressure from people to like it? How does she not realize that aside from terminology, it's the exact same thing going on. Pressure to try dicks. I don't understand how someone can write this post and not have this dawn on them. Did I get that right?

3) I personally don't like/can't relate to masculinity in general (and I'm even turned off by it when it comes to masculine women) and most men are masculine - more uninterest

I'm the same. I don't like masculinity in men or women. No offense to women who are masculine, but it's just not my jam. I don't relate to men either. I feel like there's something about being a woman that they just don't understand or that they lack.

With that said there might be some people who actually perceive me as "masculine" because I'm not really a make-up person and I wear my hair up most of the time, and I'm really casual in my clothes. I don't wear male style clothing, I wear clothes that are cut for women, they're just plain. I've had people say to me "do you even own a skirt?". Honestly this is deeply hurtful to me, and I'm not ever sure why they'd say that to me because I do dress up sometimes. The reason I dress the way I do has more to do with body insecurities and not feeling pretty, because I have PCOS, which also makes me feel masculine, which makes me feel like absolute shit, because I don't like masculinity, in either someone's physicality or personality, and I don't want to be masculine so the fact that I have PCOS is horrible to me. It gives me low self esteem and that, coupled with depression, is partially why I dress the way I do. The fact that some people seem to take that as me being "masculine" feels like absolute shit, but oh well.

Definitely. I think that culture is starting to change a bit, but it's on the down low. I was hanging with two of my cousins, one male and one female, and my female cousin's boyfriend. He was chatting with my male cousin and casually asked if he was on grindr, and the cousin replied he's "everywhere". They obviously thought I would have never heard of grindr and wouldn't know what they were talking about. You'd never suspect either of these men were bisexual.

I'm glad that companies who treat their employees like shit get taken to task, but I'm a little annoyed that people seem to be taking this as confirmation that Ellen is an asshole who berates people. According to the sources, that claim is untrue and it's the producers who are the problem. That doesn't mean that she doesn't hold responsibility for her producer's behavior though.

“People focus on rumors about how Ellen is mean and everything like that, but that's not the problem. The issue is these three executive producers running the show who are in charge of all these people [and] who make the culture and are putting out this feeling of bullying and being mean,” another former employee claimed. “They feel that everybody who works at The Ellen Show is lucky to work there — ‘So if you have a problem, you should leave because we’ll hire someone else because everybody wants to work here.’”

It’s a false equivalency. The proper equivalency in this case would be to replace black for female. If black people want black only spaces they should allowed to have them and most people would agree with that, because black people are a historically oppressed class and deserve to have place that boost them up and give them freedom from racism. Likewise women are historically an oppressed class and we deserve to have spaces without men, that give us freedom from sexism and boost us up.

Gender can’t be abolished because it doesn’t exist. It’s a made up term. What people really mean when they say the word “gender” is “sex roles”. Sex roles won’t ever go away completely because they’re formed based on the roles women and men have in making babies and from the differences in our bodies. That will never fully change. They can be vastly reduced though, and be less authoritarian, allowing people to just act however they want without being judged.

If you’re depressed, it’s because of a “chemical imbalance” and you need to speak to a therapist and take medication. There’s is zero evidence depression is from a chemical imbalance. Depression is unhappiness that results from something being wrong or missing in your life, often it results from being treated poorly by the people around you. It’s not medical.
