What SaidIt Considers Insightful by CompleteDoubterII in memes

[–]magnora7 27 insightful - 6 fun27 insightful - 5 fun28 insightful - 6 fun -  (0 children)

It's the lowest common denominator for this website. Reddit is so obviously taken over by left-leaning people that most of the people who get banned unjustly are right-leaning. Ergo saidit's culture reflects what reddit cuts off.

So posts like "reddit bad" and "leftists bad" are things almost everyone here will agree with because of their experience with reddit which is what caused most of them to come here. It gets old sometimes, but it's also understandable given how this place came to exist.

In addition some people want to hijack saidit's culture to make it lean more far-right, and that contributes to the overall lean as well.

It was nice when we had all the lesbians here who got banned from reddit, but they didn't integrate themselves with the site culture as much as I'd hoped, and most kind of just sequestered themselves in subs they took off of /all. Which is fine, I was just hoping they'd contribute to the melting pot of the front page more to add a little left-right balance. Oh well, it's all good though.

I've noticed too if the first few posts on the front page are not good, I notice the posts after that are usually good. Like posts 3 through 40 on the front page are usually pretty solid overall.

Thanks, I just wanted to share a project, I never really meant for this thing to grow.

It's called that because it's based around fishes that evolve. You should try it.

I was actually just building an update to their neural networks a couple days ago, I re-wrote the brains from scratch with a new architecture that works even better than the typical layered feed-forward ANN brain design used in most neural nets.

Also I made s/evolution public again, I don't know why that mod did that. Probably maliciously to keep people from using it.

Our server company just said this to me: "You must remove access to the material immediately. If you do not, [server company redacted] must remove or disable access to the material expeditiously under federal law; this will require us to place restrictions on your server in 96 hours unless you comply."

The video was hosted on streamable, we just linked to it. So we aren't even hosting the property they allege we are hosting. Also they sent me 2 different notices/tickets over the same URL.

They claimed these are the "original works" upon which we are infringing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIvXpn94NzY&feature=youtu.be

The only thing we actually host is the thumbnail. And surely you can't DMCA someone over a thumbnail to a video freely available on youtube... that'd be insane.

[–]magnora7 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I agree with the quote.

But on the flip side also imagine if I go up to someone and say like "You asshat, you're so bad and dumb and no one likes you" and stuff over and over, right in their face. Then say they go inside and shut the door in my face so they can't hear me anymore. Have I been deprived of my liberty by being kept from telling someone else what they don't want to hear? I don't think so.

I think the value of the message is important (facts vs personal attacks) in this equation. And also the ability to say something doesn't mean the ability to say it to one particular person, nor does it demand they listen. Perhaps public figures like representatives are exemptions, as they should be required to listen to their constituents. But most people are not required to listen to everything that is put in front of them, nor should they be.

However people should have the ability to broadcast ideas broadly. However people shouldn't be able to shout fire in a crowded theater. The line between the two is very fuzzy and complex when you try to find exactly where it is.

Awesome. It's a good movie for a lot of reasons: It shows how complex war is, and how when fighting a war you might not be fighting for who you think you're fighting for... It also tells a very niche viewpoint of a little-mentioned war, so it's interesting for that historical aspect too. Definitely worth a watch!

Yeah I'm thinking this is 50-200 fatalities probably... not good. I heard the firefighters were just arriving and had set up to put out the fire right before it exploded... so that's horrible. On the plus side, the fireworks going off might have given people enough warning to get away at least some distance. So that hopefully saved a lot of lives, but I don't think anyone expected an explosion of that immense size.

Yes I agree. However that conflicts with my goal of being transparent and open about the reasons for why things are happening... so I'm caught in this impossible position. If I explain everything in great detail all the time, everyone is informed but also fights with me about everything constantly and it's exhausting. If I don't explain what I do, my life is easier but the site's operations get less and less transparent to the users. So I'm always having to balance these conflicting goals. Even after 3 years of doing this I'm still not sure what the right way is. However the timer ban levels seem like a good next move.

So if I could issue the strikes in the form of temporary bans with increasing length, I think that would work well from my end and would give the users a chance to change their behavior too.

Well there's certainly the motive for them to do so... I already saw an article about how Israel has a contract with Lebanon that if they support Hezbollah in any way at all, then Israel can do something to Lebanon like invade it or something... so if Israel wanted to make that happen, this would probably check those boxes. So it could be a regional territory grab based on a past contract. I don't know much about the contract itself or what it entails though.

Will We Someday Write Code Just By Describing It? by realpanzer in programming

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's what I hope someday coding will evolve in to, a conversation between the machine and the programmer over specs.

Like imagine if you could say "I want to make a top-down spaceship shooter game" and it just automatically did that. And then you could say "The spaceship should be bigger and have more guns" and it would do that. "There should be twice as many enemies, and three types of enemies." and it would make those changes. "The ship should accelerate faster" Done.

Then at the end of the day, you have a new video game that you "programmed" custom.

I imagine that's where programming is eventually headed. Truly "high level" programming languages that interpret your spoken or written intent in to code, automatically on the fly.

Someday they'll look back at hand-writing code by typing out specific syntax the same way we look at people who use oxen to plow their fields.

No they re-wrote from scratch. Saidit is the only popular site based on reddit's old code, as far as I know

but yeah it seems like they kind of figured out what was going on. I'm sure they deal with people making tons of fake DMCA requests all the time... this is not a small server company

Apparently according to them linking to it still counts... they said today that links to things that violate copyright law are valid parts of DMCA takedown requests.

So I reported the abuse of the DMCA system to all 6 employees I spoke with. Most gave me the brush-off, but one of them said this:

Thanks again for following up with these details, and apologies again for this mixup. Typically we avoid passing on a request if we find it to be frivolous and you should not see further complaints of this nature unless they are valid under DMCA law.

We appreciate your cooperation and please let us know if you have any additional questions.

So that sounds like a good development.

Yeah that's the thing I don't get either... they obviously didn't check these, which is bad for the server company. They're just passing these through without looking until someone makes them look.

Well, now I'm getting more DMCAs and they're modifying the requests so the copyrighted material does actually match. So I will have to take down a few links here soon, but it will be limited in scope to those that can be shown to actually link to "stolen" material.

So I've fought off the main thing of fake requests, but now he's making requests where the linked material does actually match the copyrighted material so I'm forced to take it down.

Thanks! Big win for saidit. Yup, now we have a history of 6 of them, each of which were independently found to be fraudulent.

So if the server company has any sense, they'll blacklist that person's email from future DMCA requests.

Also it's a federal crime under perjury to submit false DMCA claims: https://www.gerbenlaw.com/blog/false-dmca-takedown-notices-ninth-circuit-holds-that-copyright-owners-must-consider-fair-use-before-issuing-take-down-notices/

The claims could be traced back to the original person and they would get in big trouble. And the more fake claims they submit, the bigger the trail leading to them becomes.

Fuck yeah, all 6 just got refuted.

It became clear after they did 6 more literally 5 minutes after I deleted the first one, that they aren't going to stop until they remove all of IP2. So it was either call their bluff or slowly have the whole website be deleted. Thankfully our server company worked with us quite well once I pointed out that the copyright link doesn't match the takedown request! All 6 were closed as invalid DMCA claims.

No it's not cloudflare's fault, it's solely the fault of the people generating the fraudulent DMCA requests. Which may be a federal crime: https://www.gerbenlaw.com/blog/false-dmca-takedown-notices-ninth-circuit-holds-that-copyright-owners-must-consider-fair-use-before-issuing-take-down-notices/

Well fuck yea, finally some light at the end of the tunnel. I'm awaiting replies on all 6 DMCA take down requests tickets right now, after I showed the video is not related to the link they want taken down. I just got the first one back, and he said this:

Hi there,

You are correct, apologies for the oversight. The two videos are not related. As this is the case, I am going to close this matter out. If you have further questions or concerns, please let us know.

Boom! Done. Now just have to get the other 5 tickets to do the same (every ticket I'm talking to a different employee). Also the user reporting these fake DMCAs could potentially be committing a federal crime, so I'm making it a point to gather up the various fake DMCA reports and let each employee know this is a pattern we're seeing from this person generating these fraudulent legal claims, and they need to watch out for this person.

[–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What's super crazy is I'm realizing that the "original copyright claim" has literally NOTHING to do with the pages they want taken down. Not even linking to it, or mentioning it, or screenshots, or anything. It's literally 100% unrelated. So I'm pointing this out to the server people and I'm awaiting their responses... I talked to a few different people about it, I got a different employee for each new ticket we got. So hopefully at least one will realize what is going on.

[–]magnora7 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Now the server company is saying:

Regardless of where the original content is hosted, this DMCA complaint is still valid. You cannot link or redirect to any content that violates copyright. Please remove the infringing link as per the complaint.

And now I'm trying to show that many of the links they want me to remove don't even have anything at all to do with the video they link as original source material. Like they literally linked to a random youtube video, and then a random ip2 link, and then said "you have to take down the ip2 link because of the copyrighted material" but the ip2 link doesn't have anything at all to do with the "copyrighted" youtube video! Like 0% at all, nothing related, not one thing. So now I'm trying to get the server company to see this.

Yeah we got a legit DMCA takedown request about it today, and I had to act in 72 hours or our hosting service said to us that they would take us offline. I figured removing one post to keep the site online is a reasonable compromise to make the problem go away and keep saidit online. However if this behavior continues beyond just this one incident, we will probably be forced to start disputing the DMCA claims.

I looked in to your IP ban some more and one part of one of my ban scripts had a bug that I've just fixed. So your IP ban is gone, you weren't linked to any other account that got banned, it was in error. One of the ban scripts had an bug where it was fetching the wrong IPs sometimes and you just happened to be one of the 10 people on the whole website that was affected. I was able to fix it thanks to your report here. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for your help in finding this bug!

Interesting, I didn't know any of that! Thanks.

Why I like saidit. It doesn't have downvotes, and that is pro free-speech. When you have downvotes that discourages people from speaking up. We don't need downvotes. If someone says something dumb here, then it just won't rise up, and that's enough. There doesn't need to be double punishment. by suckitreddit in censorship

[–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The problem though is that when you get downvoted a lot, it sorts the comments so yours is at the bottom, then after even more downvotes it collapses the comment so people have to click it to see it. That means way less people are going to read it. So it limits the spread of what you're saying. That's why downvotes are censorship, in a lot of cases. It has little to do with feelings, but rather with the sorting mechanism.

I don't think it was a second explosion, it was just the shock waves. The "first explosion" was the combustion, and the "second explosion" was the low-pressure shockwave imploding to fill the space vacated by the explosion, and then going outward after it imploded. At least that was my take on it
