Anyone want to make a free speech Reddit alternative? by fschmidt in SaidIt

I understand, but it's still a huge trade-off in accessibility and initial investment.

The hope is that the carbon copy method would become a simple, trivial repeating process. SaidIt's free speech is becoming too compromised? Well, somebody just started SaidIt2. Three months later, that's compromised, too? Well, look at that: there's SaidIt3 now! Rinse, repeat.

Add streamlined automated data base transferal (should not be too difficult, considering the platforms are all carbon copies of each other), and users won't even notice anymore as the number behind "SaidIt" keeps incrementing.

One could argue that's a form of decentralization, too, but 1) I don't really care if it is, and 2) it's still super easy and accessible in comparison, and that's what counts. :shrugs:

Of course they might. Anyone can call anything "hate speech." Words don't care who (ab)uses them and for what.

Heck, I have been accused of "hate speech" for arguing that consoles are better suited for gaming than PCs. (Not even in jest. Reddit folk actually tried to get me banned for that!)

So... yeah...

This is a very unpopular opinion, but there actually is a golden mean of "permissible free-speech."

I understand, I understand:
Many people want to make free speech a strictly binary on/off, black'n'white matter. But I counter that with Buddha's wisdom: "A string too tight will break. A string too loose will not play."

IMO, the key is to set only formal limits to free speech without limiting opinion. So for example:

  • "LET'S GO KILL PERSON XYZ!" is not okay.

  • "In my opinion, person XYZ deserves to be killed." is.

  • "Niggers go home!" is not okay.

  • "In my opinion, African-Americans should go back to Africa." is.

It's not that hard to figure this one out, is it?

(DISCLAIMER: none of the opinions quoted above are my own.)

Love the idea of a free-speech reddit alternative.

Why not keep it simple though and just make a carbon copy of SaidIt, except with a free-speech policy firmly in place? Just like SaidIt itself is a carbon copy of old.reddit.com, except with a no-downvotes policy firmly in place.

  • Saves time & money.

  • Offers a familiar environment, thus high accessability for old SaidIt/reddit users.

Call it Seddit or something. Make it as carbon-copy as you can (safe the important detail, of course). Then focus on having people simply type in seddit.net instead of saidit.net.

TIL that /u/magnora7 is going around claiming that I had a “positive” stance toward Hitler for posting this meme in a comment on /s/politics – essentially calling me, a half Jewish POC, a Nazi sympathizer. by 16Mega in SaidIt

[–]loki88 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

By misunderstanding, I meant that Mega probably got caught up inadvertently because there was a particular context to his comment I bet was missed at a glance.

He literally just posted that meme, as it is, in reply to a submission showing the president of Turkey spewing antisemitic conspiracy talk. That's all the context there is to it. None of it warrants smearing him as some kind of Nazi sympathizer -- especially by an admin who has all the means at his/her disposal to know better.

You're way too ready & eager to give the wrong people the benefit of doubt here. The ones you're trying to protect from criticism are the accusers. They are the ones using that accusation (read: smear) to "justify" sweeping content suppression (read: censorship) based on "rules" they just make up and modify as they go. /u/16mega merely brought this to public attention here.

I don't really care if they were all up in arms or stressed out because of some antisemites posting stuff. It is their responsibility not to punish the wrong people due to some heavy-handed negligence, let alone some opportunistic power trips like a bad cop taking a demonstration as a license to kill.

If you do like /s/ironleft, you should be interested in their content not being suppressed -- rationalized by slanderous smears at that (along with other blatant insults by same admin that aren't even being discussed here right now).

If it's a misunderstanding, the admin in question can explain him-/herself and correct course. His/her apology is due either way. Possibly more substantial redress than that.

This "misunderstanding" is actually a direct result of the admin in question trying to "handle it privately." Or trying to "handle it" at all, for that matter. His/her particular "handling" of it just made matters much worse.

Globalism has no interest in equality among workers worldwide. That's internationalism.

If globalism leads to equality among workers, then only ever by accident (such as through accelerationist processes). Creating constant worldwide crises militarily provides ever new local dips in labor & living standards for globalism to move on to for the next wave of cheap labor, etc.

Race, community, tradition, beauty, strength, greatness, and so on.

lol Beauty?

Beauty is PURE materialism. Pure human attachment. Some say the driving force and true currency of worldly existence. (Compare still life, vanitas, etc.)

Strength? What for?

Tradition? What for?

Greatness? What does that even mean? A sense of accomplishment? Accomplishing what?

What a thoroughly confused list of things.

our upper class isn't interested in Marxism any more. The Western left doesn't seem to be concerned with workers either - it has been totally subsumed by consumerism, cosmopolitanism, and sexual liberation. If there is to be a workers' movement in the West, it will come from the right.

So you reject "the left"... because they have fallen from Marx and don't really want to seize the means of production?

And therefore "the right" has to serve as your hopeful Ersatz-Marx who will be "stronk" enough (see points above) to actually pull through?

This just keeps getting better and better! XD

Citizenship has no value

When it comes to the risk of deportation, it very much does. Which was the point in question. Like it or not.

it's just a piece of paper

So you have no issue if someone comes and strips you of all your cash then -- all "just pieces of paper" of no intrinsic value?
(Provided you have any... which may be a bold assumption, granted... ^^'')

You already are a minority in your own country.

Every single human being is their own minority.

Why?

Because no other human being is as pure-bred a specimen of your particular (sub-sub-sub-sub-...) race than you are.

Whether and in how far you deem yourself a "minority" depends entirely on where you draw your arbitrary lines. In the not-too-distant past, and even in some places today, people have been racist toward folks from the next village or even the other end of town.

In other words: You make your bed, buds.

Muslims in particular are extremely overrepresented in rape, violence and tertorism and you know it very well

I do. So what you're saying is

  • "a little bit of rape, violence, and terrorism is fine... just don't overdo it!"

?

Where exactly do you draw the line? Conveniently right above your own religion's stats? :-?

The people who profess it with some exeptions are not europeans and do not belong in our lands.

So... again: only good ol' Nordic and Graeco-Roman paganism, then? :-?

Virtually all other religions are foreign imports.

Nah, Chrisitanity has been in europe for almost 2000 years

That's a gross overstatement, and you know it.

Even Rome didn't become majority Christian before ~400 AD, and it took MUCH longer for the rest of Europe to become Christianized. Why do you suppose they were still burning witches till the early 1800s?

Now, of course you were careful and merely claimed that Christianity was "in Europe" for almost 2,000 years -- which is technically true. But if being "in Europe" for a while constitutes any eligibility, then Islam should be right next in line. And Christianity gets beaten by Judaism and possibly also Hinduism, Buddhism, and others who might've had some presence "in Europe" before it.

It is also not /u/JasonCarswell's personal content dump. 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙸𝚛𝚘𝚗 𝙻𝙴𝙵𝚃 aims to be a curated digest, platformed by SaidIt and operated as a user-created page ("sub") by two users of SaidIt as a mode of their personal use of the site and its services, opting to allow and employ other users' contributions in addition. It was the latter consideration and responsibility that led to the removal of said submission.

Hey, maybe it's Sweden? Yeah, that's one of the first countries people usually mention in this context. Let's go with Sweden, much fancy? (⌐‿⌐)

And they do it with glee, just like you, pointing out that they can't be forced to play fairly

But... that's not at all what I'm "pointing out"?

What I'm saying is that not paying anything other than accepting the privilege the US demand to play World Bullies-- I mean World Police as they see fit to serve themselves -- no least for their own protection (see Cold War) -- is already all the fair share that needs to be paid. If anything, the protection Europe receives, not seldomly from the consequences of the US' fucking things up, is the fair share the US owe us as compensation -- the only reason why that arrangement is acceptable in the first place. (The Middle East, for instance, is not so fortunate.)

Ask yourself: why have the US been tolerating the bad "fair share payment" morale for so long? Now read the previous paragraph again. (Hint: they'd been getting their fair share good already!)

Now, if there are indeed mutually extorted-- I mean agreed obligations beyond that, which my country is not fulfilling, then that's unfortunate, and we probably should comply -- I'll give you that much. Though even such is not set in stone (compare debt forgiveness and similar).

Oh, you're one of those.

Further exaggerating your claim doesn't make it any more plausible. One comment of yours ago, all it would've taken is some compromises and tax raises... now it's suddenly impossible altogether [citation missing].

  • If the US taxpayer funding Europe's defense enables Europe's welfare states, then the US taxpayer keeping the funds enables the US' own welfare state (if it doesn't... what's the point of keeping?)

Ha, ha, ha...of course. You won't say.

But... I just did?

Specifying that I'm from continental Europe, and not any continental European nation but one of Sanders' model nations is way more specific than saying you're from the US. Even more specific than saying you're from, say, the Rust Belt.

What more do you want, buddy? Don't be a creep.

Military spending is incredibly costly, and you've got an idiot to do it for you.

Agreed! He truly is being an idiot about it -- in more than one way.

The vast majority of Europe haven't paid their fair share for decades.

There is no fair share to pay. Just because the idiot is a self-abusive sociopath, doesn't mean he's being an altruist. In fact, it would be out of character, if he were.

Do we really have something to lose as Americans if we pull back our external activity? The Cold War is over, and it seems the more fingers we have in pies like [...] Middle Eastern countries, and so forth, the more problems we create.

Awomen, bro. Awomen.

Let Europe defend Europe.

Aw, no need to sacrifice, buds! You can have both! Just stop bullying countries like Venezuela and start taxing your damn billionaires, and you're gonna have more than enough to afford our welfare state twice over -- pinky-promise!

Ya, been living under democratic socialism for more than four decades now. No "gulag" in sight -- other than kindergarten, school, and college, if you will.

Going to the dentist and having a general medical checkup once every year with appointments made within days. Had braces, had surgery, had an emergency plaster cast (within hours after the incident), need only few prescription meds but need (and immediately get) them in somewhat regular intervals.

Zero student debts, zero medical debts. All despite being born & raised in a lower middle-class home with virtually no inheritance to show for. Haven't cracked a lottery jackpot either, so far.

Got into legal trouble and paid the bill but, despite being a POC, never once had to even remotely fear for my life because of the cops -- who hardly ever shoot ANYBODY, and yet, crime rates are among the lowest in the world.

Get to vote between a dozen, frequently changing political parties, from far-right migrant haters, through libertarians and Greens, all through to full-fat Marxists -- and a frickin' Yoga party is in there, too! Each having a realistic chance to get seats in the parliament.

Communists reject the concept of money.

Engels briefly remarked that money (as we use it today) will serve no more purpose eventually. That's a prediction, not a prescription.

There is no need to outright reject money. Indifference toward it will set in naturally, in due time.

The argument made is that all left wing power suppresses speech, not some. So your argument that some right wing power suppresses speech too really falls flat.

Theoretically yes. Practically no. You cannot keep up that match up game I propose indefinitely without the last person in the audience in effect not giving a damn about that left-right dichotomy anymore. This is also because any illustration of "all" instances of leftwing power being suppressive of speech will usually consist of presenting only some instances either.

Once you present that elusive positive list of non-speech-suppressing instances of rightwing power, we may move the discussion on from there.

what we are brainwashed to think is that the extreme far left is the moderate left.

It's the other way round. In the current discourse, people regularly mistake the "moderate" (i.e., fake) left for the far left. The more rightwing people are, the more confused they tend to be about this.

Here's an easy way to tell though:

  • How many supporters of the recent #forcethevote initiative widely deemed "radical" are in favor of (let alone calling for) the censorship attributed to "the left" here? How many of those are Bernie-or-bust?

  • How many of the more moderate, blue-no-matter-who opponents of same initiative do? How many of those voted for the guy who boasted having "beat the socialist" and promised to billionaires that "nothing will fundamentally change"?

You will find that it is really the moderate "left" (aka the "radical centrists") who is pro censorship.

The mainstream has been taken over by radicals

lol

If only!

From the far right, the dead center seems radically "left," I guess... a bit of woke-signaling will do.

This is no different then blasphemy laws

...which are quintessentially rightwing.

Isn't it funny you'd choose a staunchly rightwing instance of speech suppression to illustrate just how bad "leftwing" speech suppression is? I find it funny... :)

Again, I will have to point you to the video game metaphor:

Theoretically, it should be impossible for a video game character to ever break out of its boundaries -- and most players simply accept that and play accordingly. After all, binary logic -- the logic all video games run on -- is as rigorously black&white as it gets, and the video game character is fully embedded in a controlled environment.

Yet... there are players who do not accept that premise... and they regularly manage to break out!

The system is rigged and stacked against us. But it isn't perfect. Some theorists say no system can ever be. And that's our chance & potential. I've already highlighted one weak point: they can't just make voting illegal. The guillotines are looming, and they realize as much -- especially since the most recent events around the Capitol.

If we arrive at a dead-end on one avenue -- e.g., #FraudSquad -- we need to try another. Relentlessly.

Any defeatism here always rings of some ulterior opportunism...

both he and Jimmy are still promoting the delusion that the system can even be attacked (or even won) utilizing the rigged system and rigged rules that the corrupt ruling class wrote.

Still not convinced that it can't.

If we can get to the point where the establishment literally breaks into sweating bullets (i.e., at the morning after the 2O2O Nevada primaries), it is not a stretch that things could be pushed just a tad further. There's a lot of buyers' remorse among the hold-the-nose Biden voters. Occasionally, lessons are learned.

"If voting were effective they'd make it illegal."

But they can't, because that would result in a non-electoral revolution.

So there is still an off-chance to clip it like through the wall of a video game (despite all the rigor of binary logic that should make such impossible).

That said: this is not an either-or approach. All options should be on the table. No opportunity should be dismissed.
