I think it's fair to say that re-modding /s/canada is one of a few scant cases were drama is impossible. But maybe I'm just being an typical American and stereotyping.

We can't just pile on re-modding subs to the list of stuff to do for /u/magnora7. Mostly because knowing our luck one of these so called 'mods' will come back from their 700 day hiatus and then bitch out Mags for being a tyrant and how unfair it is.

I was hoping that more of us regulars would chime in on this to help elaborate on how we would like to see this handled. I listed my concerns and threw two random ideas out there and only got one comment of approval and a handful of insightful and fun marks. /u/jasoncarswell, /u/diogenesjunior, and I can't be the only ones wanting to discuss this. And the sooner we come up with something the sooner we can organize and build up this place for the better.

I feel there are too many problems with just saying 'make your own sub.'

There are a handful of subs with inactive mods but people still post to. These are prime targets for brigading and griefing that only admins can clean up in that case. If you do decide to make your own sub you'll probably want to post in the abandon subs encouraging others to follow you to an active moderated sub. But what if no one else marks your post insightful and/or fun and keep posting in the original? On top of that you have to hope you can find a decent alt name. /s/atheism is going to be a first choice to sub for people looking for non theist posts. /s/atheism2 is a goofy way to fix this and /s/nonreligious or /s/secular might work but technically are slightly different in topic. And if we are ok with leaving these subs as ghost towns that'll be off putting to new members and would probably encourage older members to start creating subs with the intent to squat names.

It'll probably help to have an automatic function to either open up subs to claim if all mods are inactive for too long. Or at least have a community effort to identify inactive subs and open up elections to fill in moderator spots.

[–]lawuigi 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I was pretty active in the new atheist movement from 2011-2016 and hindsight was definitely 20/20. At this time I was in living in one of the more liberal college towns in the american mid-west. I started attending meetings and joining hangouts with the atheist group in the area and connecting quite well. But there were times where I was pretty much marking myself with a target on my back and not knowing it the whole time since nobody in the group was ever confrontational.

One of these occasions I remember being in a small sit down at a coffee shop with about 5 members and the conversation slowly drifted heavily into feminism. Which wasn't that big of a deal since there was only one other guy in the group and he was gay. But I stuck around and at one point someone said something to the effect of 'I plan on being a angry, hostile feminist until the day I die.' Stupid me interpreted it as theatrics and decided to throw in some of my own snark with, 'it's probably best to focus on love over hate otherwise we'll be no better than the zealots protesting at the abortion clinic.' Amazing to think that the conversation didn't end there with someone flipping a table and all of them grabbing me by the arms and legs to throw my out into the street but this was in the civil times. But I can now say confidently that tabs where kept and in time I accumulated more. Too bad for them my job had me travel far and for extended periods so I was out of the country when the hysterics over the 2016 elections were brewing. But I got back to the US in the Summer of 2016, quit my job and packed up and moved across the state to my hometown.

For the rest of 2016 I was mostly hanging out with old high school friends and my little brother. My little brother at this point was a big atheist like me so I suggested finding a group like the last one I was in. But since I was lazy and took my time the election came and went. I was definitely surprised but shrugged it off and moved on. By late November I finally looked up a group to meet up with in the area. At the meet up it was just 5 of us which was a bit surprising since this site membership page had hundreds I just assumed the holidays where keeping everyone busy. The club leader was there and welcomed me and my brother to the group but had to admit it was a weird time for them. Their last meeting ended up being animated due to the election fallout. He pretty much said that it seems the group is currently fragmenting into pieces as many people left to make new groups.

After checking in on the old group I was in, I saw that something similar happened there. From what I gathered any group that wasn't already a homogeneous echo chamber had this kind of reckoning. For any normal liberal this was an insurrection. This wasn't suppose to happen because we were united. Even if you could have seen this you would have been labeled as crazy as a doomsday prepper. And as you can see now, trying to reach to them now is practically impossible. The only hope I have lies in the fact that the purity tests never ended and with each day they prune their ranks. So much so that I'm willing to place my chips on Trump winning again.

Sorry, I'm getting a bit ranty. I need to clarify myself.

"M7 choses to run his site as he sees fit." I have no disagreements here.

My comment was going more for saying that we as a user base of this site shouldn't be entitled and shoulder our expectations onto /u/magnora7. He is open and receptive to ideas from the community but this only works if we put them out here in this sub and discuss them. I just want to encourage us to lay out thoughts and ideas; good, bad, and ugly. Then dig through all the muck and see if there is a tiny gem of something that is worth consideration. If we waste a thread and come up with nothing at the end, well, at least we tried. There is plenty of room in this sub to do this and I feel we don't need another thread for this.

If this has been brought up before then I apologize and am willing to put this aside.

Moderator of r/Pics remove picture of Aaron Swartz in post celebrating Free Speech and his memory. Reddit is erasing him. by Orangutan in pics

[–]lawuigi 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Reddit was never about free speech. The TL;DR to Reddit is that it's was an idea spoon-fed to a couple of dude-bros that wanted to get rich in startups. Aaron was brought in through acquisition to work on the site to get it stable enough to sell off. The site was sold to Conde Nast in 2006. Everyone expected Aaron to sell his shares too, especially Conde Nast. But he didn't so Conde Nast made his life hell until he left/fired (details are sparse and murky). Conde Nast built the site into what you knew and loved back then then. The dude-bros that were gone for five years showed back up to 'run' the company and then Conde sold to Tencent.

Reddit was an attempt to get rich. It worked for Steve, Alex, and Paul. It becoming an interesting place on the internet for a short time was a side effect/accident.

https://www.wired.com/2012/06/torvalds-nvidia-linux/ Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, has said they are the worst company to work with and they provide little effort to help their hardware run with Linux. He went as far as facing the camera, flipped the bird and said “Nvidia, f#$k you.”

https://www.wired.com/2012/06/nvidia-linus-torvald/ Nvidia did respond saying their propriety drivers are to ensure the best experience possible and that they do support Linux development.

So them buying ARM definitely scares the open source crowd that has put considerable effort in this chipset thanks to devices like Raspberry Pi. It's a given that they'll try to close off what they can and claim it's for performance and efficiency.

The prenancy test being used appears to be an older model of this(amazon link). The photo in the description matches the product housing that is featured in the video. However the actual product is shown with a LCD screen and not the backlit OLED we see in the video which I believe is either this or that.

Still cool that he got it to run on that small screen and housed it in the device. And I could still be wrong since the dude behind this says he'll make a post about how he did it. So I'll wait and see and try it out myself once the post is made.

Programming is a losers game by [deleted] in programming

Same here, I would love to work on side projects when I get home but usually hit a wall of apathy.

Professional programming is definitely a losers game nowadays. Your boss or company ask what it takes to do something, you layout a design and timeline then convert it to cost of equipment and labor and present it. Then you get back an arbitrary cost reduction of 20% based on nothing but accountants and managers saying, "hey wouldn't it be cooler if we could pocket the difference ourselves? I mean all they have to do is type faster." You try to reduce the requirements and get pushback. So you try your best but then your team gets to the point where you have to pull out the duct tape and use half a roll just to get the damn thing done in time. You 'finish' and push to production and fast forward a month the duct tape gives out and you point out the cut corners and beg for time to fix. Nope. Try to 'fix' it with 0 money and 0 hours... somehow. And it's 3 am so you and your coworker look at the other half of that duct tape roll and give each other a solemn nod of 'it's not the solution we need, but it's the solution we deserve' and start taping it back up. You finally get home and try to sleep and dream of code that actually works.

I'd say that's more being careless if you forget to declare the base. Unless you are trying to take advantage of people thinking in base 10 by default then we run the risk of someone being deceptive and trying to trap you. In that case they are waiting for you to assume and will then chastise you for making the leap in logic to make you look foolish. A dirty trick that is all too good at swaying opinion that is unfortunate in a logical argument.

Also listen to James' piece on Motte and Bailey since most of the arguments trying to pass this trash have to use this strategy. The TL;DR of Motte-Bailey is when you use an easily defensible argument (the Motte) to pass an insane argument (the Bailey).

One possible motte to expect from these mathematical belligerents is the ability to get 2+2=5 in programming. And this is true you can create this instance in programming in fact any good establishment teaching programming needs to make this assignment for young, fledgling students so that they understand how this happens. Which is rounding error. So you can get 5 when you add 2.5 with another 2.5. Or use 2.3 + 2.4 to get 4.7, then round to a whole number and make it 5. But this is where you need to point out that this is an error caused by carelessly using fractional numbers and assuming whole numbers and to push 2.5 as 2 is wordplay (2.5 is at least 2, or 2 with a bit extra) and rounding 4.7 to 5 is reducing accuracy. So it's vital to catch this to prevent them from going to 2+2=5 and advancing to 2+2=7 or 99 or purple.

I have a hunch that most of the complaints are more focused on the Reddit-style post layout with nested comments. Which I could understand since this layout has been around for over a decade. However, I haven't seen a better layout and several other sites use this same setup. To just name a few of them; notabug.io, poal.co, voat.co, raddle.me, tildes.net, and thedonald.win.

Out of all of these only Tildes stand out to me for being incredibly minimalist and uses a slightly bigger font for comments. The others use a comparable font size to Saidit. So the only other things I see different is the color pallet and the maximum width on the comment blocks (I admit limiting the width makes it easier for me to read but I usually get around this by not full screening the browser). Overall nothing stands out enough for me to think that another Reddit-Alt found the mythical new modern look. So unless someone can provide an example of what they want or explicitly point out some aspect of the design I say just shrug off the complaints.
