OK, build the Great Wall of Privilege along the southern border, but obviously that won't solve your H1B visa problem. It's a separate issue entirely.

What do you want from me? I'm telling you the facts. You say, "level up to avoid immigrants." I say, "immigrants are at the top too." The sources are different but the problem and effects are the same.

Sort of. See, I'm under so much pressure to work (knowing that a cheaper H1B will happily take my place) that I simply can't take days off for doctor visits for fear of losing my job. "Rosaritta" has all day.

Honestly this is just sad.

Look, immigrants cause competition, spread disease, depress wages, and consume valuable resources. These are facts.

The response I get is, "oh, they just look different than you, you sad racist." Responses like this that don't address the legitimate facts are part of the problem.

I don't think you understand resource allocation and logistics. I don't think you understand zero-sum economics.

You must address the unfair resource allocation and disease issues before we can continue this conversation and certainly before you, in the face of cold, hard, facts imply that I am racist.

Addendum:

I have ZERO reason to believe there is not an unemployed, undeserving, non-immunized legal citizen, and neither do you

We're not talking about US citizens. I brought up H1B's (openly invited or not) only because "leveling up" was offered as a way to supposedly not be affected by immigration. Unemployed US citizens could be pink, lolipop-sucking unicorns with weird sexual kinks but it's irrelevant for this discussion.

While we're at it, let's get down to brass tacks. The US is a sovereign nation just like Mexico, just like Canada; all have the right to create and enact their laws. Illegal immigration is illegal, period.

So we get this, "oh, so you want to make a great wall of privilege." You're welcome to your opinion and may even have valid points. That's fine.

What you may not do is violate our sovereignty or our laws. If you'd like some law-breaking and some sovereignty violations the US will simply invade Mexico. How would that be?

I realize that the above paragraph is way over the top. I feel strongly that everyone benefits by being good neighbors. The point I'm making is that there are quantifiably good reasons for opposing immigration and in the final analysis the immigration laws are there for good reason.

OK, build the Great Wall of Privilege along the southern border

Now that I'm thinking about it, let's roughly equate illegal immigrants to invaders (bad analogy, I know) and take the position that we should have open borders. If you don't agree it's like saying, "Germany should be permitted to invade France's "Great Wall of Privilege (Maginot Line)." If you disagree you really are just mostly concerned that germans look differently than you do and you're a sad racist."

And just like that... by useless_aether in memes

[–]indianusjones 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's a different issue from border security, sanctuary cities.

I'm referencing the idea that immigration forces people to "skill up." So you go to college, graduate, and get whacked on the high end from H1B's.

Americans cannot compete with H1B's (and remote workers) because we have housing, tax, and statutory obligations immigrants do not have; Americans' cost of living is higher and thus cannot compete on price.

This seems to contradict your point that they were getting golden treatment.

Sort of. See, I'm under so much pressure to work (knowing that a cheaper H1B will happily take my place) that I simply can't take days off for doctor visits for fear of losing my job.

"Rosaritta" has all day.

So effectively, they are not getting golden treatment but they are getting some treatment and it is putting a heavy strain on the system. By zero-sum every resource that is put into an illegal alien is also a resource that a tax-paying, working citizen is not receiving to the tune of billions each year and "wasted" effort.

I used to work at a hospital. I saw tattood Mexicans in chains escorted by police going down the hall and thinking, "what the fuck." Notice there's a lot going on here:

  • The police who have to be called off
  • The staff who have to process the "patient"
  • The people in proximity who are in jeopardy if the illegal has an infectious disease
  • The doctors having to take time out of their busy schedule, causing suffering of others
  • The court system's resources to prosecute
  • The prison system to incarcerate
  • Resources for care for the victim if this is a violent crime
  • The deportation system to deport

All this for a single scumbag that shouldn't be here in the first place. Multiply this by 10's of thousands and now lump on all the dependents.

I mean, "honestly."

Finally, because they and their kids aren't getting immunized they're spreading disease. That's awesome.

But hey, I save a few thousand on my house and a few bucks for my groceries so it's worth it, right?

People's opinions can change

My gallup poll link shows that yes, attitudes have changed but is a) not a sea change (sentiment has been this way since the 1880's) and the poll b) does not break the results down by race, that is, the poll does not account for the rising US Latino population.

Addendum: By the way, I take politians' stance on immigration with a grain of salt. If history is any guide, these politicians will condemn illegal immigration faster than you can say, "voter discontent."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 2008: “We do need to address the issue of immigration and the challenge we have of undocumented people in our country. We certainly do not want any more coming in.” Source.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 2009: The latest House bill leaves in place nearly all the loopholes of the previous bill, H.R. 3200. Illegal immigrants will be able to gain health care at taxpayer expense through these loopholes (and we aren’t talking emergency care, which remains untouched and available, and isn’t even an issue). We’re talking health coverage, paid wholly or substantially by U.S. taxpayers. Source.

I grant you the two are not completely in-line but it's like saying, "we should do everything to keep robbers out of our house but since they're here we should serve them dinner on our neighbor's dime."

The point is that while the economy's bad these guys are all about anti-immigration. When the economy is good they're all about open borders. Meanwhile, you, me, and your kids get screwed no matter what the economy (increased competition, poorer education facilities, larger classrooms, strain on healthcare system, etc.).

Now you're talking. Excellent, and I mean that sincerely!

I have, as I happily admit zero evidence that liberals have pulled an about-face on immigration given this proposal. On this basis the meme is totally baseless and without merit.

I consistently contend, however, that liberals (many positions with which I agree) have not thought the issue through.

Forgive my crassness, but my guess is that many of them are young and haven't paid taxes for 25 years only to find their district's education decline precipitously.

Look, when I go to the doctor's and I see people who I know damn well are illegal aliens getting better health care than I do I get pretty upset.

To be clear, we should poll those for more immigration not directly on the question, but on whether or not they approve of the known fallout.

Don't switch this around; your original post asked how Cher's tweet is germane to the immigration debate followed by (after my inference explanation) your link to an article aggregating politicians' responses to the Trump proposal:

But what does this have to do with the price of tea in China?

and

Nevertheless, https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=web&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwjU4tv5ltXhAhUFvJ4KHZevC3IQzPwBCAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.axios.com%2Fwhat-theyre-saying-mayors-sanctuary-cities-welcome-trumps-latest-immigration-idea-1829d5c7-6577-4644-8f40-bb582003da86.html&psig=AOvVaw2-TMvTjnN-TodVt3OYx6OE&ust=1555523557136146

So then you turn the debate to the accuracy of the meme:

It doesn't matter, the fact is that OP's meme is incorrect.

To which I point out that even if this were true you haven't stated facts to back your position followed by a lengthy post discussing why you should. Yes, I even intimated that you are either lazy or stupid for not doing so after all the comments prior and telling you for the second time that unfounded emotional statements won't cut it.

What do you do? Why, attack OP's (unverified) motives of course and try to shut down the discussion when you were called out:

OP's meme is not a friendly call for debate, it's an accusation of liberals being hypocrites. It's demonstrably wrong, it's pathetic, end of story.

So now you're accusing me of moving the goal posts!

You're trying to move the goal posts.

...and trying to slip away from the debate (recall it was you who posted the "we're city leaders and we love illegal aliens" quote article) by saying that you're not debating about immigration at all when the record will show you in point of fact were discussing the immigration debate:

This post is not about the nuances of the immigration debate

Then you say:

[this is about a meme] which the link I posted above handily proves to be false

NO. IT. DOESN'T. I showed that the population's view differs considerably from the quotes cited in your article and I stated clearly that those who made them have a vested interest in doing so. I said:

To this I'd say you're right--I read an article that read about a politician slamming the President for the idea but careful to also say that the immigrants are welcome.

When we ask the population [link to Gallup poll], however, we find that they feel immigration should be reduced. I highly suspect that the outcome would be sharper if we factored for race. Notice I'm not racist, just stating the numbers.

What I've given you is the courtesy of pointing out the fallacies in your "argument" (lack of supporting facts, red herring, etc.) and what I've received in return is slippery tactics and a completely unfounded claim that your article serves as definitive "proof."

I don't mind quality debate but you need to clearly state your opinion, provide facts to support your opinion, and not slip the debate around to other areas. When you do the above your credibility goes to zero, and I'm being charitable.

Correction: you will see my link to the Immigration Gallup Pole in the comments above, not in response to your post. Here's a synopsis of research on how Americans feel about immigration.

Addendum: Presuming you're not trolling me, please, for the love of God, understand the principles of good debate.

Correction II: No, wait, I did refer you to the Gallup pole in my response directly to you; apparently you were too goddamn lazy to read it.

Not necessarily. Most health departments, for example, state clearly that services must be provided for all inhabitants of that State. The reason for this is to prevent the spread of disease.

Edit: here's California's Health Directive:

CDPH's key activities and services include protecting people in California from the threat of preventable infectious diseases like Zika virus, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and viral hepatitis, and providing reliable and accurate public health laboratory services and information about health threats.

Other critical services include providing nutritional support to low-income women, infants and children, and screening newborns and pregnant women for genetic diseases.

...and so on.

Of course, whenever an illegal commits a crime, well, there's the whole police thing.

These examples are only just for starters.

Oh, no, we don't get off that easy.

OP's meme is not a friendly call for debate, it's an accusation of liberals being hypocrites.

Again, we didn't offer evidence for this claim...we could easily verify whether or not you are correct by simply asking the author.

Let's say for the sake of discussion you're right. Yes, under this premise, the meme is not friendly and yes, it's an accusation of liberals being hypocrites.

But that doesn't mean he's wrong.

It's conjecture here that if we flat-out asked liberals whether or not they welcome more immagrants in their city they would likely say, "yes."

But if we asked them in a poll about topics we know are a direct result of immigration (remember, we had mass immigration in the 1880's, the 1920's, and since the 1970's), we're going to find they don't want the fallout from an influx of immigration.

So, ideologically the liberals want immigration but ideology doesn't put food on the table.

Full disclosure: I live in Oregon. We've been taking illegal aliens in the ass for years. Our schools used to be good but are now overburdened. Our healthcare was statistically and observably better but are now over-burdened by health issues (something like 46% of all health-related costs) caused by immigrants.

The list goes on: higher crime rates, traffic, etc.

On top of all this illegal aliens don't pay taxes at the rate Oregonians do and, to add insult to injury, the immigrants bring their dependents with them.

Meanwhile, the argument is, "immigrants will do the work Americans won't do." Bullshit. The truth is that farmers can skirt labor laws using immigrants.

And for what? So we can save a few bucks on our produce?

So in reality, the farmers make higher profits while we--those who paid taxes and built the infrastructure--foot the bill and deal with the crime.

I take my previous reply ("This is the claim you made...") back as we'd moved to your claim "but he is wrong on this point."

I happily agree with you that the person making the original claim has the burden of proof.

We now focus on your statement held in the original post, that is, liberals suddenly don't want illegal aliens as it's now proposed that the immigrants will now be transferred to sanctuary cities.

The implication, of course, is that liberals (or democrats, etc.) realize they face an increase in crime, traffic, additional burden on social, health, policing, and education services, etc. with the influx of illegal aliens coming to their city. Please tell me if you think my analysis here is incorrect as I can provide statistics to show that this is in fact true.

I'm not trying to be slick here--we can only infer at the original post's point. The idea I presented above seems reasonable given the effect illegal aliens are known to have on the "native" population. The evidence spans historically also (1920's, etc.).

Your statement, "no, you're wrong" implies a counter claim. In this case you're implicitly saying, "no, sanctuary cities are actually welcoming the idea of a flood of illegal aliens."

To this I'd say you're right--I read an article that read about a politician slamming the President for the idea but careful to also say that the immigrants are welcome.

When we ask the population, however, we find that they feel immigration should be reduced. I highly suspect that the outcome would be sharper if we factored for race. Notice I'm not racist, just stating the numbers.

So you are, in fact, making a claim by telling the person they are wrong. You are under no obligation to provide evidence for this but your argument is weak if you do not provide evidence for your counter-claim.

If a police officer writes you a citation for speeding with a radar gun's printed record you can't just say, "you're wrong" without evidence.

Useless_Aether is a propaganda account who lives up to their name

Watch this: attacking the person making the argument (presuming the account is not set up solely for propaganda purposes by an organization) is an argumentative fallacy.

Even if this person is wrong 9 times out of 10 it does not necessarily mean they are wrong on this point.

Obama shatters previous record, mentions himself 467 times in one speech in Berlin by useless_aether in NotTheOnion

"Mentions himself" is, quoting from the article, qualified thus:

Here’s the breakdown of his personal pronoun use (based on a rush transcript of the event):

“I” — 312

“Me” — 33

“My” — 43

“I’d” — 9

“I’m” — 61

“Myself” — 9

So what?

The essence of his speech was, “We have to be careful in balancing big dreams and bold ideas with also recognizing that typically change happens in steps."

Debating the substance of the message is what furthers our understanding, not Ad hominem argumentative fallacies.

Altering an accent is commonly known as style switching.

The substance of her message is, "there's nothing wrong with being blue collar."

This article is an Ad hominem hit piece.

This is great news! My position is not popular but when you look at our infrastructure and compare the pros/cons of H2 vs. LiO H2 wins out. This not the least because Lithium Ion is a limited resource--not enough to begin to fuel all the world's transportation needs.

25 NASA Scientists Question the Sanity of the Global Warmists by sawboss in videos

Hi Sawboss,

You and I know each other from IRC of course. I hesitated to post but knew you would respond rationally in kind.

In the final analysis it's not about who can shout over whom--it's about reasoned positions backed by the best available knowlege.

R*ddit has become a shouting match over ideology. You've proven that we can get beyond talking points and assess the facts. I can see you feel the same way.

You and I may not agree on this one but if I see the science that global warming is not caused by human activity then I'm perfectly happy with that result. In the vernacular, "I don't give a shit about posturing, I care about the facts."

I've been more embarrassed for whites in my life (I am white) but this is high on the list.

Are these cherry-picked interviews taken out of context or is this really how stupid these sheltered white kids are?

I admit getting a chuckle when the host asked young black people the same question where they responded with, "whaaat?!!?"

What Happened to the Linux Foundation? by useless_aether in Linux

I lobbied (unpaid "good guy" in this case) for Oregon's HB2892 in 2003. I quickly discovered that you need more than public support to move a bill through the State Legislature: you need industry support.

I met with a representative for the Linux Foundation to urge their support. I thought their backing the bill would be a no-brainer. I found myself stunned as I heard them tell me that while they supported the bill they would not make a public statement to that effect.

Why? Well, they didn't come right out and say it but it didn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that one of their major supporters was IBM. IBM was still getting a ton of revenue selling Microsoft products at the time.

The phrasing the Linux Foundation representative used was something like, "understand that we have a diverse mix of supporters."
