I would turf this thread, it doesn't benefit anyone and is more of a personal nature to you and your other Admin.

He's not wrong, though it has no effect on your users, deleting their account was silly. You're small potatoes to the copyright holders at this point, but abstracting your involvement by shifting servers out of the US (maybe swiss?) would be a good move.

You might take some direction from opensource project governance procedures, I'm not sure if they run under LLCs typically, but being considered opensource does get you away from some levels of responsibility for the actions of the people that use your platform.

This old chestnut. Wetlands makes up the vast majority of methane production and prior to agriculture, wetlands were massively more common. As well, native ruminants that were displaced by cattle production (bison, elk, moose, deer) produced as much methane as well. Vegetative matter decomposing in any environment, whether it be by cattle or by soil organisms creates methane, and looking at an entire system and not just one level in a system gives you a better idea of where methane is produced.

You'd be better off blaming shale oil production that actually release stored methane, or clathrates on the ocean floor and arctic being liberated by warmer global temperatures.

I'm not one to deny global warming, but blame the right things.

Recently Steam introduced an open source component called Proton which is an actively developed and bugfixed amalgamation of a number of technologies like WINE and DXVK. Reportedly a majority of games are running under it well, with more being added constantly. Many even run at higher framerates via this than under Windows, which speaks to the fact that if devs ever put the money they put to Windows gaming under Linux, we'd probably see some kickass performance increases.

https://www.protondb.com/

Ubuntu is the most highly supported distro, so coming from Windows I'd say you would want a desktop environment like KDE Plasma for familiarity, so I'd look at the Kubuntu flavour that integrates that DE instead of Gnome. Another option that's more up to date for the latest kernel version and libraries is Manjaro KDE, a rolling release distro based on a cutting edge distribution called Arch that's more for veterans of Linux. Manjaro is a curated release so they test the Arch version and release their packages as they seem bugfree. Arch is particularly well suited to Proton for being so up to date, but can be a pain when the updates break things, but you'd be used to that on Windows given their lack of patch QC these days.

Let me know if you have any questions, I've not regretted my changeover, though my gaming interest is limited to WoW. I still do some network consulting in the winters, and Linux experience has been invaluable when you get into many of these server environments. Besides releases like SQL Server and Visual Studio Code on Linux , Microsoft has gotten very active in the opensource community, I think mainly because they realize Linux is becoming the dominant server environment.

I figured there would be a mass unsubscribe, I did not find it but now I see it when I know it's there, it's pretty buried. I just went to Edit Subs at the top, got the list, saw no Unsub All and started manually going through them.

I understand the rationale, but I would certainly start out with a little more curation in the list, this is already unwieldy and there's only 80-odd.

[–]ikidd 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

To my knowledge there are dozens of well designed studies that say it's safe at the low doses that even farmers get, let alone anything else, and it degrades so quickly that there's nothing left to get anywhere near a consumer. The studies that say there's a risk are of dubious construction, refer to doses millions of times higher, or are generally meta-studies of bad design and conclusions. The junk science behind European bans is well known, but authorities like Health Canada which are not known for letting things get very far beyond super safe are perfectly fine with it and have reviewed it repeatedly.

But there's a lot of conspiracists here, so that doesn't play well.

There's also the "well, Monsanto is a multi-billion dollar company so they must be evil somehow", ignoring the fact that they had a lower market capitalization than Whole Foods Group when they were sold to Bayer.

Plus, I tell you right now if it weren't for glyphosate, we'd be using twice as much land and 3 times as much fuel to produce the same amount of food. So decide how much of the Amazon you want cut down for more farmland, and how much harder you want CO2 targets to be reached. Or how many more brown people you want dead, because starving kills much better than some imaginary effects of glyphosate.

You'll be a long time making up the energy emissions of building and buying a new efficient (or electric) vehicle over using a relatively low-emissions vehicle like a Civic. Granted, that Civic would probably be used by someone else that isn't going to then buy a new car, but keeping existing vehicles running is more efficient than making new ones constantly.

Again, looking at systems from top to bottom and not focusing on individual elements makes more sense, though it's not easy. This is why hydrogen powered vehicles make no sense if you need to use fossil-fuel energy to make hydrogen, or take away clean energy from other users to do the same.

By far, the best option is to use solar energy already falling on the earth to generate electricity, but then storage and the high environmental costs of mining rare-earth elements used in solar cells becomes a factor, as well as building distribution networks to get it from where it's made to where it's used.

I used to build ipchains firewalls for SMB customers out of cheap or used desktops before there were things like Linksys or Dlink hardware firewalls. Then I went full Microsoft for a bunch of years because I was running an MSP, and came back to it only a few years ago when Windows 8 pissed me off.
