Keep talking and reading. I know we are moving backwards right now. I remember when I was a kid learning that Shakespeare's works were originally all performed by men and thinking how stupid that was and how women would never be shut out of public life like that again. And here we are.

I wish it was not an election year in the US, and we didn't have all of the international problems we're having, because it feels too easy for people to think we're crazy and just move on. I don't think the trans industrial complex could have taken hold this hard outside of an environment of chaos like we have now.

I grew up atheist surrounded by fundamentalist Christians who were always dragging me along to church, trying to save me, and telling me about their beliefs. I had no faith. I found a lot of the bible stories very interesting but none of them really seemed believable. I felt lonely a lot and thought I might feel better if I could just drink the Kool aid or communion wine. I learned later that you can have community without faith and was less lonely. But the lesson was there--i stuck to what I knew was true. I wasn't trying to get anyone to quit their religion. It seemed to be working ok for most of them. I was the weirdo and did not join in prayer circles, but we coexisted. I didn't insist they make room for me.

I did get in trouble for wearing a shirt that read the Satanic Army (spoofing the Salvation Army logo), and pointed out it was hypocritical that dozens of kids could wear their God themed shirts. That was probably my only battle and it was short lived.

I got drafted into debate club in high school, where I had to argue for things I found heinous. When I was in college I got interested in different religions, political systems, and philosophies. I thought I was looking for my "thing" but fortunately I found an education instead.

Because of my upbringing and being deliberately taught critical thinking, I question new ideas and I consider my gut and life experiences.

I was actually happy when the whole Boomer asshole, "special snowflake" discourse started a few years ago. I was glad people were being more careful with what they would say in terms of sexism, racism, ableism. I thought it would make people more thoughtful. But now people just seem very credulous and fragile when it comes to any ideological questioning. What are people so afraid of?

The wage gap by FemiNationalSocialit in PinkPillFeminism

[–]fuckingsealions 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This is an issue with many facets, but I remember study results coming out a few years ago: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/20/upshot/as-women-take-over-a-male-dominated-field-the-pay-drops.html

Your example of a plumber is interesting and I want to pick on it a little. I'm the US, where the majority of skilled tradepersons are non-union, so the employer sets the wage. In theory, women non-union plumbers could make less overall than ones who are men. I don't know if it's ever been studied.

I joined a union, and my wages are dictated by my contract, so I make as much as my majority male co-workers, who are highly paid. This is good for me, and I encourage women to enter skilled trades. I do wonder what will happen to wages as we come closer to parity in numbers of men and women in the trades.

I know unions aren't perfect, but I believe in worker representation. But if you look at public school teachers, who flipped to being majority female years ago, in a "caretaking" profession like the Times article refers to, it doesn't matter if you have a contract if you're coming into a profession in which wages tanked years ago.

There is also the motherhood penalty, which is real. https://nwlc.org/press-releases/mothers-lose-16000-annually-to-the-wage-gap-nwlc-analysis-shows/#:~:text=Mothers%20Lose%20%2416%2C000%20Annually%20to%20the%20Wage%20Gap%2C%20NWLC%20Analysis%20Shows,-Posted%20on%20May&text=Mothers%20typically%20are%20paid%20only,NWLC)%20analysis%20of%20Census%20data.

I think you're correct when you notice these issues are systemic. It's beyond lazy for men to call the wage gap false when casual observation shows us otherwise, backed up by reputable studies.

Check out The Coddling of the American Mind if you have time. It gets at the three great untruths of our time, one of which is: "bad idea=bad person."

Many people are completely unreceptive to even hearing ideas now. I see all the misinformation about Rowling and her new book. People have been trained to form an opinion based on a headline.

I wanted to understand trans issues deeply before accepting the new dogma. Just a little education plus my real world experience peaked me.

I hear you OP. I have some hare-brained libfems in my life who are friends of friends or part of my work networking. I too have been trying to trick myself into thinking that up is down and black is white.

I feel like this is similar in some ways to what happened during the free love movement. Women were told they could be free with their bodies and it was a movement based on love. From reading memoirs it sounds like women had to go through it themselves and realize that men were just what they always were, regardless of what they said.

I think this craze will pass. I'm worried about what legislation will come out of it though. I can't advise on friends, though. That sounds really hard.

[–]fuckingsealions 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That makes complete sense. I didn't want to assume.

First, it is so hard to watch friends make what looks like a bad decision--the wrong job, poor romantic choices, etc. Transitioning is huge but it's like those other decisions we watch loved ones make. I'd say try to love your friend, and accept this change as best you can. Much like when a friend brings their terrible partner around to dinner. We focus on our friend, and tolerate the oaf, even if we don't like him/her. Because we don't want to alienate our friend. We try to see the good side and what is making our friend happy about the relationship.

There's a couple of outcomes here. Your friend may realize it's not working out for her. If you're positive and haven't heaped pressure on about how great her new identity is (sounds like you wouldn't), she may come around and the friendship will survive. Or she'll make peace with herself and her new identity, and hopefully you will just be able to hang with your friend. There might be a honeymoon period where all she wants to talk about is her transition, so it might be ok to give her some space until she settles some.

The third option is that you'll drift, which hurts, but it happens with a lot of friendships. I don't hear you saying you want to end it, so all you can do is see what happens.

I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think about your responses. People are very good at assuming their views align with others and projecting them on to you. I've perfected the, "Mmm" and "I see" type responses to deflect. If someone really tries to pin you down I'd go vague with "as long as Friend is happy" or "I don't know enough about trans issues to speak about it" and then change the subject.

Hang in there. And again, I'm sorry.

I've been casually noticing how hard it is for men to remember women's names in a lot of situations. This is a really random example, but during quarantine my household started watching early seasons of Survivor. The male contestants always knew the names of the other men pretty quickly, but the women were often nicknamed, like "Blondie" or "Barbie" and they would fumble for their actual names.

I also saw some interesting poll results. They surveyed 1000 people about who they recognized from pictures of older tv shows, both the actors' names and the characters' names. Men were almost always the top recognized people, even if a woman was the actual star of the show. After a while the results became predictable. It's annoying.

I was fine with pronouns and trans people in general, and believe in rights for most groups as long as they're law abiding. I'm still fine with adults who are of sound mind doing whatever with their bodies and lives. I was concerned about trans people's safety because I remember Matthew Shephard very clearly.

I live in a liberal city and vote for taxes, parks, and social safety nets. I believe in abortion access and have always been a serious feminist, but have only really turned completely radical in the past couple of years. I had the notion that "letting" tims into women's spaces was akin to sharing space with feminine gay males, not sometimes violent straight men.

The switch was coming out of ignorance of the different "arms" of trans culture. I did not know about the high rate of children being medicated and some minors being operated on. I didn't know about men opting into women's prisons. I didn't know all the hateful things TRAs said about feminists, or that they were sometimes violent with women. I didn't know about AGP. I don't care about AGP, but don't try to flimflam me with your "I've always been a woman."

Mostly what I care about now is protecting kids and hoping that young women in particular will get education and mental health care before affirmation.

This is repulsive and he should be charged. Yuck. As disgusting as this is I'm glad that she documented it. Probably nothing will be done anyway.

When I've had various run ins with men on public transit I get loud in hopes of shaming them and drawing attention. Not one time has anyone come to my aid by telling the guy to knock it off or anything. Everyone looks out the window and I've felt I might as well be alone.

I have always helped when I see women being harassed. I was working downtown and I saw a woman being chased on the street by a crazy man. I stuck my head out the window and yelled at him to leave her alone and pick on someone his own size. He came to the edge of my job site and screamed at me for 15 minutes, calling me every name in the book. Finally my coworkers were able to convince him to leave. I don't care, I'm just glad he stopped terrorizing that petite woman.

I wish people would speak up more when they can.

I'm hoping gendertrender crap is just that, a trend. Entertainment from this period will immediately announce c. 2020!! because of the trans characters wedged in willy nilly. Content creators often respond to what's happening in the world but I can't imagine revisiting some of the art and entertainment from this time because it's going to feel very dystopian.

I just watched She-Ra with my daughter and it was delightfully gay and then BAM, enby lizard in season 4 from out of nowhere. The voice actor turned in a very campy vocal performance that didn't really fit with the rest of the world, and the character was attired in something that felt kind of Rocky Horror/strip club. No other trans characters were portrayed in this world up to that point, but all the characters knew the lizard was they/them without that conversation happening onscreen. At least the vocal performance improved in the final season.

I wonder if the creator, who is a lesbian, had to cave to fan pressure after the fan base was trying to "trans" another character.

Ok, I do not have time to research this atm, but there seems to be nuance to what this might affect. Comment from thread:

Channelbot_Reborn 4h You need to know what you're signing before you do it.

The instructions provided are for leaving comments in favor of repealing Section 230. This isn't about Reddit specifically.

Section 230 protects websites from being held accountable for content their users upload. Without this protection, sites like 4chan basically can't function. Any malicious party could find a way to jam child porn through and get any site taken down.

Reddit is a shithole, but repealing section 230 would be a death blow to basically any platform that allows users to upload their own content, except ones run by companies with billions in the bank. Repealing 230 would kill competition for sites like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and so on.

Reddit has serious internal issues but this isn't the solution.
