That's just a bingo card of woke jargon. Absolutely meaningless in terms of real world solutions for people who are suffering any actual discrimination or harm.

I'm having this convo in two sub-threads here so excuse the cut and paste:

You can't have free speech without space for everyone to speak. And to create space for everyone to speak you need rules and boundaries otherwise biggest-bully-troll wins and almost everyone else is denied their speech. All the evidence - seeing how things play out in practice every single time - tells us that.

Fully open debate is a fantasy, won't ever work. Even pple who claim to be for total free speech recognise that implicitly even though they pretend otherwise (for whatever reason).

Example: you set up a sub to discuss woodworking, or organise a talk on "new woodworking techniques". By its very nature that's already constrained and boundaried, and you (or FS absolutists) probably wouldn't advocate for others to go into that space en-masse and start screaming about some entirely different topic, or posting death threats, or libel or conspiracies. You'd say let everyone who is interested in woodworking come and share their ideas, some might be good ideas, some might not - have a discussion, counter points - but you'd recognise that if a screaming mob comes in to smash the place up then saying you can't evict them bcs "censorship" makes a nonsense of how discussion, learning, and testing of ideas functions.

So, why is it that for some spaces, some topics, those boundaries are reframed as "censorship" ? Terms of debate is a thing, as is freedom of assembly, and again, it's interesting who is and isn't allowed to assemble and set their own boundaries and terms.

Yeah but spoon "theory" was terrible anyway. Not a theory, and not even a particularly good metaphor (since when were random bits of cutlery analogous to lack of energy ?) It was actually a good example of internet in-group speak, but like anything, yes, even that was hijacked.

The original concept (Kimberle Crenshaw) was fine and made sense in context. The problem is it being twisted beyond recognition such that it has lost any useful meaning at all. It was originally about material realities (workplace discrimination and recourse under law) but is now all about identity-oppression-olympics IOW complete bullshit.

Absolutist "free speech" is bullshit. By not censoring the trolls, ddosers, bullies, liars, scammers, defamers you are in effect censoring everyone else. The mods/admins are already making a choice as to who gets censored (whether they admit it or not). You allow the bad actors then effectively by omission you censor many more of the good ones.

What is an 'air gap'?

it is like siloing. Completely different online IDs for GC. So if you are "Jane Smith" and work in a local nursing home, and go rock climbing as a hobby, and write online about any of these in connection with your real name or job or whereabouts - don't mix any of that with your GC/reddit/saidit ID. Use different emails, phone number (if reqd) for sign ins, different payment methods and so on. Some go as far a different machines, but different IPs will do (see VPN)

What is VPN and do I need it?

when you visit any site it will know the IP address (you can look this up and see for yourself, search "what's my IP"). This could be used to find you. A VPN hides this behind an IP of its own

https://uk.pcmag.com/encryption/4328/the-best-free-vpns

What is a cloud server and do I have one?

you probably dont have one

Do they already know who I am if I used my email for reddit?

is your email janesmith[at]yourplaceofwork.com ? Otherwise probably not

For the site, there is no way to win and no solution, because if they shut down the offending posts, they would become a site that censor, and loses its fundamental appeal.

And this is why absolutist "free speech" is bullshit. By not censoring the trolls, ddosers, bullies, liars, scammers, defamers you are in effect censoring everyone else. Detrans female— Is there space for me here? by [deleted] in GenderCritical

Be careful about what you reveal that could give away too much personal/identifiable detail. You might want to go more public at some point with some or all of your story, but there is plently of time. If there are issues of criminality/abuse involved then seek expert advice- might be therapy or legal stuff - but carefully, anonymous online, and away from the internet with professional confidentially if in person.

Yes, of course there is space for you and any detrans females here. For the future there might be a detrans specific sub here - or better still on the new boards that the old GC mods are setting up (coming soon hopefully).

Good resources are gnc-centric blog and videos (incl her interviews with Benjamin Boyce), pique resistance videos and articles, 4thwave now blog. Also check out detrans twitter - should point you in the right direction, but do ask if you have specific queries, there should be pple here who can help out too.

It's where transwomen could make themselves useful - send in a TW officer (or a man who identifies as genderfluid and is playing a woman today) to search or check any man calling himself a woman. Problem solved

It seems that to a certain extent transgenderism may end up destroying silicone valley as a world technology centre, they have no awareness that the rest of the world does not see the world as they do. by Esseteee in GenderCritical

[–]endthewoo 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Then you're into "everyone I don't like is a leftist" territory. It doesn't make sense. Words need to have meaning - a resonable and consistent definition, and the likes of Peter Theil, Musk, Zuckerberg and the rest are no way "far-left"

They cast an outsized shadow. The danger is that they also have an outsized influence.

This for sure, but why would you describe them as "far-left" ? They are obviously power-hungry authoritarians, sociopathic, narcissitic, but whether they profess to be republican or democrat, they are capitalists (ie nowhere near the left) and many would be closer to right-wing libertarian anyway.

In what way will it destroy Silicon Valley ? The tech bro and tech corps are male-centred, full of perverts, heavily into transhumanist, fantasy worlds already - and they are still doing alright out of it. The bigger threat to SV is either from a religious right backlash within the US or from China and Russia - and bearing in mind very few of us (ordinary pple) can afford or have the means to go off grid - the most likely scenario for the rest of us will be "choose your master/dictatorship" as the few sane voices become even more powerless.

She'll have signed before today, so maybe the nonsense is an after-the-fact panic to stop a pile-on. She is already in the bad books of many for criticising metoo and being too white, will be interesting to see if pandering to the trans works as absolution (as it would if she were a man, cf Damien Barr Booker debacle)

"I can't emphasize enough the range of viewpoints attached to this letter, but neither can i over-emphasize the climate of fear that led many people you know and admire to tell us in confidence that they agreed but were afraid to sign. This is why such a statement is necessary."

Even in the early days of social media, men play-acting as women would turn up in women's support groups, it's what they hone in on every time. Vulnerable women, reproductive issues, recovery from assault - shows what abusers they are. Reddit has been a particularly special playground for them, lots of support from the admins and time on their grubby little hands to hijack as many subs as possible.

[–]endthewoo 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

you are not comparing like scenarios:

A1: woman is pregnant, wants to grow the baby, continues with pregnancy

A2: woman is pregnant doesn't want baby, aborts

B1: woman is pregnant, doesn't want to grow the baby, forced to continue pregnancy against her will

B2: woman is pregnant does want baby, forced to abort against her will

My perspective is that scenarios A are fine, scenarios B (which includes the forced abortions in China and India for example) are not.

Your perspective seems to be a version of "every sperm is sacred", ie "every male fetus is sacred", and you are upset about the fact of a tiny handful of women merely speculating about aborting an unwanted male embryo (which is vanishingly rare to non-existent in practice, and in reality any woman really yearning for a child but completely unable to raise a male (again tiny tiny minorty) would likely avoid pregnancy altogether and foster or adopt a girl instead).
