Second-wave feminists did start it, but radical feminism isn't a religion, so people are allowed to change their minds. Myself and other women who enjoy reading radical feminist literature cringe at the idea of political lesbianism, and so I hope the radical feminists of today are vehemently against it.

Every political and social movement has room for error and learning from mistakes.

I still feel sorry for straight women stuck with dating straight men.

Edit - I also reject the notion that second-wave feminist paved the way for autogynephiles and predators to call themselves lesbians, they'd been doing that in their bedrooms before then.

Misogyny aside, women can have flat chests because small and healthy female breasts exist. Unless a woman has a genetic disorder which gives her some sort of genital deformity, a woman cannot have a penis in any way. She could have a large clit, but that's not a penis. These TRAs love to take normal healthy outliers and boundaries and run with them, don't they.

I had no idea about Julie Bindel, that's ridiculous. Time to read more about her.

I get the idea of straight women wanting to be liberated as much as possible from male fantasies and ideals etc. while also meeting their very human needs for intimacy, but intimacy can't be satisfied through a lie. It's like another form of conversion therapy. I have a bisexual female friend who felt as though she needed to forgo men entirely in dating - not necessarily a comparable situation, because she is actually attracted to women - to free herself from playing into the patriarchy, but she felt guilty about her attraction to men and it quickly became unhealthy. I'm sure we're all aware of what that feeling is like.

What do you think others mistake and/or need to realize about bisexuality? by [deleted] in Bisexuals

[–]cryptoterfthrow 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

When people think that you need to be consistently open to dating both sexes to be bisexual. I think this partly gave way to a group of bisexuals who are mostly same-sex attracted/only currently dating their current sex/can never see themselves dating the opposite sex long-term, who just call themselves lesbian or gay. I understand why they do this, and almost did it myself at one point, but it does homosexuals a disservice as you're claiming their label without having the exclusively homosexual attraction - and therefore prejudice etc. - and it also downplays the fact that choosing not to date the opposite sex and only going for your own is a uniquely bisexual experience.

This can obviously work the other way round with bisexuals claiming to be straight, but the erasure mostly only affects them.

The time I realised it was important to be open when possible was when a lesbian I was talking to on a dating app brought up that she didn't like to date bisexual women for personal reasons. I was annoyed because my profile clearly stated that I'm bisexual (this was after a week of talking) so it felt as thought she had wasted my time, but I realised that I needed to stop comparing the degree of my same-sex attraction to lesbians and thinking if I could ever be as 'good' as a lesbian when dating other women.

What is biphobia? by usehername in Bisexuals

[–]cryptoterfthrow 6 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

To me, it's being pushed to stick with one sex, typically the opposite sex (I wouldn't go as far as comparing it to conversation therapy as we already experience attraction to the opposite sex, but there is potential to learn shame and guilt for liking the same sex); being treated as 'sluts' or heretics for liking both sexes; and being erased because how could someone possibly be attracted to both sexes? so we would be treated as straight or gay depending on our current relationship or how others perceive us.

I think people 'can't define biphobia' here because this sub is relatively quiet.

No one wants women to do what's good for ourselves.

I'm glad you gave Lori Lightfoot as another example, because I was going to say that in the case of female celebrities, I'm skeptical of how many make money by putting out sexualised music videos. It's another way of playing into the male gaze, and isn't 'empowering'. Having said that, I don't know much about either Lori or Beyonce.

It depends on what you work as. I know that, in the UK at least, some of the poorest people are lower class white males. They are often completely passed over by schemes set up to help people in poverty/people with fewer opportunities, because males have fewer biological vulnerabilities than females, them being white means they don't have the same history as black people, and they're the 'evil cis white male' after all.

I see this as an issue with intersectionality. You can't create an oppression hierarchy when they all depend on different things.

I still reject the idea that radfems came up with the first made up sexual orientation. The issue with transbians is they are men who call themselves women, and they existed before women pushed for female liberation as what we would call 'radical feminism' from the 1960s. A man inserting himself into a subset of women, such as lesbians, is a natural extension of claiming womanhood.

I never said that you said people can't change their mind. I never said you specified which wave started it, and it's unnecessary for anyone to do so since radical feminism formed from the second wave. I was creating further discussion since this is a forum, and pointing out that even if women caused a problem for themselves, they can recognise it and solve it. And now I'm making the point that any idea radical feminists come up with can be misconstrued as causing problems which men were doing all along, because this is a discussion, and conversation flows. Unless you took this as some sort of debate.

I don't have a code, still need to post more. You don't need to be a radical feminist to join, but there does tend to be infighting, and that's coming from someone who's radfem-leaning. I think it's because its userbase is women who are tired of their rights being trampled on all fronts; it's common to be a little more perceptive of the little things.

I'd say the fact that everyone gets their controversial opinions out is a good thing though. There was a thread a while ago in which someone posted a comment about how they thought since make-up, heels, etc were pushed onto women, and that comfortable clothes which fit the female body are made by women and for women, they believed that men shouldn't wear feminine clothing at all - kind of like they would be appropriating our history and oppression. If I remember correctly, others pointed out that fashion changes over time etc. and while it is a wee bit insensitive for a man to parade around in six inch heels and a face full of make-up and the whole up-do (such as drag), it is also impractical for women to dress that way, and ultimately everyone's better off wearing things that are comfortable for them as individuals.

Looking at the synopsis, it only seems to reference fourth-wave feminism. The fourth wave is very identity politics driven, which is fantastic if you want to detract from the goal of women's sex-based rights. Each wave of feminism of course branches off from the previous one, but as it branched from third wave feminism (one I also have disdain for as that is where intersectionality took hold) and failed to learn from mistakes made from the previous wave, it is more palatable to the public and likely has internal inconsistencies.

As someone who hasn't watched nor read the things you suggested, I don't think social movements and revolutions in general will ever reach their end goal, as there are far too many people alive today - it would be near impossible to change everyone's minds and get them on board. That doesn't mean a big structural change isn't necessary to fix issues that started a long time ago; it all depends on who's willing to put in the work to make it happen.

It also happens to be far less convenient than taking a stance which means certain things continue as they do. But I'll leave it at that.

I can't remember who or where so can't back this up unfortunately, but I remember reading something where a Muslim woman agreed she would adjust her hijab in the restroom with a trans-identifed man in it, thus exposing her hair and other parts to him. That's only one case, but considering how racist and pedophilic that these genderists are, Islamophobia is nothing to them.

Unrelated, but another similarity between radfem and trans circles I've seen online is about brain sex/gender. Trans people saying your sex/gender is defined by your brain (brain dictates entirely), and some radfems saying there is absolutely no brain difference between females and males, besides size (brain has nothing to do with it). There's an all-or-nothing approach, unfortunately, and it will lead to dissociating from your body. Or meat-sacks, as I've seen people refer to it in both camps.

I'm sexually attracted to men but couldn't imagine having a loving relationship with them. I'm sexually attracted to women and would fall head-over-heels stupid for them.

I can recognise that it's a social thing, because I don't believe in forever and the current state of dating between women and men is abysmal.

It's apparent that some of the TQ+, like demisexuals, want to take social behaviours and say that they're biological. A coworker of mine said she's demisexual because she feels she can 'fall in love with anyone [she's only dated men btw] but only after getting to know them' because she's 'biologically programmed to understand them before dating and marriage'.

But it's okay. I took the plunge and cut off people who were draining me. That just happened to be all but two, but I did something which distanced myself from them too. But not fully. Since lockdown has been lifted here, I need to take the initiative to socialise with others. Maybe join a club, since work is my one and only commitment right now, and the only time I go outside is to go and buy groceries.

I'm used to cutting people off and being alone, so I'm not sure if I've gotten used to the feeling of loneliness and I'm just not registering it, or if I'm more worried about being lonely with no one to rely on in the future. Whatever the future looks like.
