All the candidates and speakers who were quoted in the article kept saying that they didn't organize the meeting and they didn't make the rules. You know what you can do when confronted by discriminatory rules at a venue where you've been asked to speak? Decline. Unless there's some kind of contractual obligation that could lead to financial or civil penalties for declining, you decline.

If the races were reversed, this would be a massive national story.

A question. What would everyone like to see libertarian community online & what are your thoughts on the successes/failures of other libertarian communities online specifically on Reddit? by Capitalism_is_Magic in Ludwig_von_Mises

[–]cmdrrockawesome 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I've always said I am a lowercase L libertarian and not an uppercase L libertarian. I like libertarian ideals, but the Libertarian party is, by and large, nuts. There are too many fringe groups that seemingly speak for the entire group. You wind up with people arguing for pedophilia and that everything should be made legal and other nonsense that won't work in the real world.

I think that's why so few people take libertarian communities seriously. You wind up with the kooks and lunatics crafting the message (at least the most audible message) and that turns a lot of people off. You can't build a coalition when you're alienating the vast majority of people out there.

I think it has every right to protect the most vulnerable. When some jagoff reads a mommy blog article about vaccines and decides to endanger the immunocompromised and young children, I have a problem. The government should 100% step in. Your personal choices and freedom end when they endanger other people.

You want to get sick and possibly die from something? Great. Just don’t go out in public and never interact with anyone else for the rest of your life. There’s your freedom.

My Body... My Choice.. by useless_aether in DepopulationWatch

[–]cmdrrockawesome 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

This is the correct take. It's not "My body, my choice." when that choice has the potential to negatively affect others. You don't want to vaccinate you kids? Fine. Don't take them anywhere in public and don't expose them to any other people (especially kids) unless you explicitly tell them your child isn't vaccinated.

There are plenty of immuno-compromised people and unvaccinated children and infants out there (for legitimate medical reasons) who are put at risk every time they encounter an unvaccinated person. It's irresponsible and borderline immoral to take your unvaccinated children anywhere in public.

The cops are pissed. DAs and PDs work very closely. It's not good for one to sour the relationship with the other, especially in a high profile case like this one.

That's gotta suck for the CPD. They wasted time and manpower investigating a fraudulent attack. By the way, a lot of the comments on that article are so disheartening. It seems like all Baby Boomers want to do is comment on how lazy or stupid Millennials are. How they were able to do such and such, and the only reason Millennials can't is because they spend too much money or waste too much time and effort. They aren't aware of the economic factors that allowed them to have the success they did, nor are they aware of the factors that hold so many of my generation back.

A college education, by and large, is a positive in most people's lives. Where I think we've failed as a society is pushing the narrative that everyone should go to college. There are plenty of alternatives that can benefit people and actually might suit them better. Trade schools, apprenticeships, entrepreneurial training, etc. We've seemingly put all of our eggs in the college basket while simultaneously making it harder to afford, even at the state school level. I can see why some people would think it was a massive scam.

The student loan debt crisis will soon come to a head. When it does, expect another massive bailout from the feds. Only then will we reexamine our post-secondary school strategy.

Idealism is all great and good, but it's not always realistic. And I'm not saying it's entirely based on greed. It's about practicality. If you're expected to take on the added costs of a second residence, while still maintaining your primary residence in your home district, you could definitely find yourself running into financial troubles if you aren't compensated adequately. Well, at least the average citizen would probably find themselves running into issues.

It's a delicate balance. You attract people to a position with a number of things -- power, prestige, influence, and money. There are probably tons of qualified candidates out there who want to get into politics and want to make a difference, but simply can't afford to. Maybe they're making too much and have to support their family and their business. Maybe it's something else. You have to make the job attractive enough to entice people who are on the fence.

You're not always going to be able to rely on a person's altruistic nature to get them to run for office. Not in the real world anyway. Not when they have financial and personal obligations to overcome.

She does have a point. It's the age old dilemma. If you pay politicians below average, you tend to find yourself governed by wealthier people who can afford to live off that low pay. Either that, or you wind up with people taking bribes, "gifts", or whatever else in the form of campaign donations to make ends meet. The solution would be to pay politicians enough that they don't feel the need to accept those bribes, but that's a pretty distasteful proposition as far as the public is concerned.

I live in Southern California. There is no conceivable way something like this would work here. We’re all too spread out and many of our commutes are just too long. Carpooling isn’t always an option and many of us need the freedom of our own vehicles to conduct business and run errands. Car sharing services would make all that difficult.

He’s been exonerated in the collusion investigation. Now, the only thing really in question is whether or not he obstructed justice, and that will likely be impossible to prove in court (which is why prosecution wasn’t recommended in the report). They’d have to prove intent to prove obstruction, which means they’d have to prove to a jury what exactly Trump was thinking when he made certain statements or took certain actions. That’s effectively impossible.
