A question. What would everyone like to see libertarian community online & what are your thoughts on the successes/failures of other libertarian communities online specifically on Reddit? by Capitalism_is_Magic in Ludwig_von_Mises

[–]cmdrrockawesome 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I've always said I am a lowercase L libertarian and not an uppercase L libertarian. I like libertarian ideals, but the Libertarian party is, by and large, nuts. There are too many fringe groups that seemingly speak for the entire group. You wind up with people arguing for pedophilia and that everything should be made legal and other nonsense that won't work in the real world.

I think that's why so few people take libertarian communities seriously. You wind up with the kooks and lunatics crafting the message (at least the most audible message) and that turns a lot of people off. You can't build a coalition when you're alienating the vast majority of people out there.

Detroit argues police officers have the right to kill unlicensed dogs by dcjogger in news

[–]cmdrrockawesome 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not that I agree with their rationale, but think about it this way. If your unlicensed dog gets out and is picked up by local municipal or county animal services, you will have to pay to have it licensed before they release it back to you. If you refuse to pay and animal services keeps the dog, they will eventually either adopt it out or put it down. That's no different than what the police do.

It's an interesting thought experiment -- unlicensed dogs are contraband.

The petition goes on to compare Smith’s unlicensed possession of the dogs to that of “heroin...moonshine whiskey...and sawed-off shotguns.” The City’s petition puts it bluntly: “Under Michigan law, possession of an unlicensed dog is contraband per se...”

I, for one, believe most cops need better training when it comes to interacting with animals in general and dogs in particular. I was a delivery driver for over a decade. I dealt with plenty of dogs. Some were aggressive, most were not. Knowing how to deal with them can mean the difference between deescalating a situation and potentially killing a family pet.

But we all know how good most cops are at deescalation, don't we?

This is completely disingenuous and taken out of context. Post the whole damn article when you do this nonsense. For those who care, the full article is here.

The article relates speeches given in 1900 in support of the re-establishment of a Jewish state by various Jewish leaders. The quote in question is as follows:

There are 6,000,000 living, bleeding, suffering arguments in favor of Zionism. They come not to beg, but to ask for that which is higher than all material things. They seek to have satisfied the unquenchable thirst after the ideal. They ask to become once again the messengers of right, justice, and humanity.

He's likely referencing the 5,000,000 or so Jews that were being persecuted in Russia and eastern Europe at the time. Numbers are used in hyperbole all the time to convey a message and argue a point. I don't see what the issue is.

Oh wait. It's that 6,000,000 Jews died in the Holocaust. That's what the connection is, right? Are you a Holocaust denier now too? In addition to everything else?

I think it has every right to protect the most vulnerable. When some jagoff reads a mommy blog article about vaccines and decides to endanger the immunocompromised and young children, I have a problem. The government should 100% step in. Your personal choices and freedom end when they endanger other people.

You want to get sick and possibly die from something? Great. Just don’t go out in public and never interact with anyone else for the rest of your life. There’s your freedom.

Vaccines, by and large, are safe and effective. Yes, money has been paid out to people who have had adverse reactions to them, but it's ultimately a small number in the big scheme of things. Society as a whole is better with people getting vaccinations.

Also, I've never met or heard of a medical professional who wasn't willing to delay or space out vaccination protocols for young children or those who may have adverse reactions.

Exactly. It doesn't really work because not vaccinating can have a direct negative effect on other people -- often times, some of the most medically vulnerable. It'd be more apt to say "Everyone else's body, my choice" when talking about vaccinating.

My Body... My Choice.. by useless_aether in DepopulationWatch

[–]cmdrrockawesome 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

This is the correct take. It's not "My body, my choice." when that choice has the potential to negatively affect others. You don't want to vaccinate you kids? Fine. Don't take them anywhere in public and don't expose them to any other people (especially kids) unless you explicitly tell them your child isn't vaccinated.

There are plenty of immuno-compromised people and unvaccinated children and infants out there (for legitimate medical reasons) who are put at risk every time they encounter an unvaccinated person. It's irresponsible and borderline immoral to take your unvaccinated children anywhere in public.

During a March 27 education hearing, Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, R-Granite Bay, lashed out over a Democratic proposal to prevent Teach for America members from working in the state’s poorest schools.

Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Bell Gardens, proposed the bill because she worried that Teach for America does more harm than good by enabling schools to cycle inexperienced educators into classrooms. Teach for America is a nonprofit organization that recruits college graduates for two-year positions in public schools.

A Teach for America alum himself, Kiley grilled Garcia, for 20 minutes, accusing her of drafting an unconstitutional bill that would discourage aspiring teachers from entering the workforce.

“We have 7,000 TFA alums in California who know better than anyone that our public education system is failing our kids,” Kiley said at the hearing. “We have a committee here and a Legislature that is not focused on kids and that operates a default mode of policymaking that’s anti-student, anti-teacher and anti-equity.”

All the candidates and speakers who were quoted in the article kept saying that they didn't organize the meeting and they didn't make the rules. You know what you can do when confronted by discriminatory rules at a venue where you've been asked to speak? Decline. Unless there's some kind of contractual obligation that could lead to financial or civil penalties for declining, you decline.

If the races were reversed, this would be a massive national story.
