imo the most important is the text content - for instance, long text posts with over N words and over K upvotes? So the bot could monitor all posts coming in /new and check on them several days later - if the number of upvotes exceeds the K threshold, it'd repost them. Just hoping there are people here who might get interested in the idea.

[–]cloudrabbit 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Slashdot.org has been using a slithering scale system of tiered voting for years. It's become a chaotic hellhole.

Why? I was also wondering if adding Agree/Disagree buttons could help. They wouldn't give or deduct any points, but if someone's frustrated with a comment, it could help prevent them from maliciously using the lowest vote on that scale. Oh and also maybe the pyramid votes shouldn't deduct points at all? The lowest 3 votes could be 0 idk

Saidit has gone the stolen code route.

But it was opensource? What was its license?

They lawyers can shut it down, the servers can be moved to a more accommodating jurisdiction

If it's a concern, the admins could start working on their own code version if saidit gets big enough to be in danger?

Fuck USA for this one. It killed a lot of natural creativity in young people trying to change the world, because studying in this time means a full schedule so you got almost no time to actually reflect on what you are studying

That depends. In my uni - which was one of the best in my country - we actually got plenty of free time. Granted I wasn't that social myself, but then it's always a compromise between work and leisure and no system would change that.

Soon i won't need to read their fucked up "specialist" job descriptions anymore, because i will decide, which people we hire

Lol that's familiar. I'm learning programming and when I try to motivate myself with job descriptions I just get more depressed. Don't appreciate the idea of working for a corporation that would get rich off me. And do bad shit. Reddit has lots of employees who were ordered to do shit they did after all...

This is how some famous people studied completely alone, before they fucked up our university teaching system

Yes, but they lived in - before 20th century? There was less to learn back then, isn't it so?

I mean, I don't have anything against subs not wanting outsiders inside. Because that would mean every post just turns into discussion in comments. On Reddit GC had a debate sub, which is a good approach, imo. And there would be a selection bias there - people looking and able to debate would go there + those who want to see the arguments of both sides can easily find them.

And as for preventing a sub from turning into an echo-chamber, I liked this approach I've seen on some reddit subs: occasionally, say once every two weeks, a thread called Unpopular opinions is made where subscribers share how their opinion is different from the majority opinion of the sub. Comments in such threads were always interesting to read and were not downvoted.

Yeah it's funny. Imagine a site that consists of all the communities banned from reddit. What a company that would have been! The_Donald, incels, conservatives, feminists, ultra-left wing (like that Chappo subreddit? although I heard that was a martyr for an excuse to ban TD). I never thought a day would come when I'd feel kinship with all those groups, but now I do. IMO unless a group promotes violence, they shouldn't be banned.

Wow that's a news to me. I'm in a kinda conservative country and to most people homosexuality is still much more preferable to trans - and even about homosexuality what most don't like is the stuff from the parades where people are over-the-top being naked etc. The parents here would much rather prefer a gay child who didn't harm themselves with hormones/surgeries.

I get you, I recently joined a conservatives discord curious about their opinions about reddit bans. Have just checked their chat again and bingo - they are in the middle of a circle-jerk about how men and women are different and they 'have no overlap' of the way they are/think/behave, but rather 'just parallel distribution'. Honestly I wouldn't mind conservatives at all if they didn't try to impose that stuff on me. And to me - and all women I suppose - the stakes in this battle are always much higher - my freedom - personal, financial, medical - is at stake, while to them it's about merely being the majority in society, and being able to be more openly vocal and open about their beliefs.

Damn I looked at that archive linked and saw this as one of the top posts:

I'm finding the physical strength gap between men and women really depressing.

I honestly don't think I would be as bothered about this if there weren't so many violent men around. Fortunately since I'm fairly young and grew up in a protected environment I haven't had any bad experiences so far but as a smaller woman myself (being 5'1 and about 100 pounds) the idea that virtually any man could hurt me easily if he wanted to makes me feel incredibly weak and vulnerable.

This is exacerbated when I hear about studies showing that the weakest man in the study could punch harder than the strongest woman, and the gap in strength is actually huge and lots of women who train hard and work out seriously are still completely outmatched in strength by a couch-potato man who's never been to a gym in his entire life. I think this is part of the main issue for me - I wouldn't work out for the purpose of trying to "get as strong as a man" but it's very depressing that even if I did work out and train, I would probably have to become a full on bodybuilder to even get close to the

That really resonated but now I can't read the full post or the comments. Another reminder of what we lost.
