it's a defense measure against various types of impersonation and / or spoofing attaacks online. i can't think of exactly how this is done, but csrf is pretty standard security measure for websites (i used to have this personal site and i have a csrf token because it's a given by django). but it doesn't look like saidit got that on certain pages, and op's problem is kinda related to that kinda attack, at least it's the first thing i thought about checking. so i'm a bit worried.

there are many levels to privacy, the highest being the safest setting on tor (edit on a open-sourced OS under strong code review, like freebsd). there's this site that tells you how unique your electronic fingerprint is using the browser you're currently using. in other words, vpns don't really do that much. if you want to evade from an organization, it might help. if your vpn is provided by an organization that's good at computer security, that might help too. but if you just got one of those vpns recommended by youtubers, you can't prevent the government from tracking you. for more detail, see these two links:

  1. https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29
  2. https://gist.github.com/kennwhite/1f3bc4d889b02b35d8aa

btw tor is made by the us navy if i recall correctly so american government is kinda an exception to tor tracking...though they might allow perfect privacy and anonymity because it's really a double-edged sword.

what they said on the repos (my thought below are kinda different):

from the repo: The frontend is written in React, leveraging the removeddit framework by Jesper Wrang. from removeddit's repo: This is a done by comparing the comments being stored in Jason Baumgartners Pushshift Reddit API and the ones from Reddit API. The frontend is written in React and uses Sass as the CSS Preprocessor. There is also a seperate backend used for storing what threads that have been removed by mods. This backend is really just a mirror of /r/undelete.

i think ceddit and such sites are more powerful than r/undelete because they recover deleted comments under a valid post while r/undelete could only recover entire posts. btw removeddit is working, surprisingly.... (no r in the middle).

reddit, like any social media site, is reproducable. sure. but what makes reddit worth that much money is all the users engaging in blogging on reddit, generating huge amount of data at every moment. (so, in short, if it's removed in say, one minute after it's posted, one better save it in that minute or else one can never read what some users said.)

now, in principle only reddit has that data. so in principle, it can, say, change your data and make others think that your online personality said something you did not. though this is not true, as reddit won't go that low, they often delete posts and comments at their will, and a lot of times those deletions are just not reasonable at all. (edit: see r/undelete for a start) imagine you said something and just becasue someone on the internet does not like it, your word gets deleted. if you're democrat, you would remember how this content manipulation by bots on the internet swayed the 2016 election. if you're republican, you probably have fresh memory of how sites like parler and gab were attacked fairly recently.

the solution is to keep a separate online record of what people have said and done on your favorite forum. that solution is called a mirror site. reveddit is one of them. another famous site is called the wayback machine. now, if you were a big corporation like reddit, you probably would not like that idea very much. so in reality, these mirror sites are not really favored by big powerful sites and the groups running them. for example, there were two sites like reveddit, ceddit and removereddit, which worked pretty smoothly before. but when they stopped doing so, i have to search for a bit to dig up sites like reveddit. yet these mirror sites provide valuable record of what the conversation was truly like before a few people could delete potentially valuable parts of it.

i'm probably gonan make a social media streaming / backup project and put it on github, and it shall work with blogpost or something so that one can see all his social media history, regardless of the platform's modding policy.
