It does not hurt to have a young adult work an entry-level, minimum wage job and start an undergraduate program when they are in 23-25, early/mid 20s to advance their career.

But it does hurt to push a fresh-from-high-school 18 year old, who hasn't fully decided what to do with their life nor has any perspective with the job market, into a student loan contract involving more money they have ever earned in their lives.

I still think colleges and unviersities are elitist institutions, and the world would be a better place if the information they curate was free (as in freedom) and if career paths weren't locked behind admittance and the high price of tuitions.

Where is the freedom of speech claimed by the West?

Not on corporate platforms which is considered "private property", and the owner is at liberty to moderate and censor at will even if it is more strict than the laws of the land. You may find that discussion-format sites such as forums will curtail speech for arbitrary purposes such as topic relevance (justifiable) or nonconformity of opinions with other users (less justifiable). But other formats of websites do not do this.

So the lesson the West is learning from the past decade is not to rely on corporate platforms for self-expression.

We did not represent an ideology, a movement, or talk about politics much beyond current events, but if you are not careful and vigilant you can quickly become associated with illegal operations.

If you are looking for free speech on the clearnet, consider a different format of websites. Neocities states itself as a pro-free speech platform. It is both connective, communicative, and self-expressive to much greater extents than forums and social media. But as its format is not discussion, the tactics of taking down discussion boards like 4chan, 8chan, or Kiwifarms does not apply as well if at all to begin with.

Why are incels so hated in society even though we never did anything? by yabbit in AskSaidIt

[–]antares 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't hate incels, but I don't like them either. This isn't based on judging others based on their ability to get laid. This isn't white knighting for 50% of the human population. An incel isn't just a virgin.

Incels are a specific intenet community who are both annoyingly arrogant and one dimensional. It is as though they had all come from or derived their worldviews from 4chan /r9k/. These are shut-ins who mainly experience the conglomerate, collective, sometimes fictional recounts of others especially the flood of depressive, relationshit greentext stories of /r9k/ in 2010s and some bad break up stories on Reddit.

Since then they have definitely spread to other parts of the internet. Their talking points and rants regarding "the roasties" are recognizable. They repost the same years old screencaps. The differences between their personalities is the anime girl they waifu and the genre of pornography they enjoy. They are sometimes indistinguishable from spam bots because of the reoccurring theme of their messages and how often they post. They are sometimes hostile to anyone they consider a "normie". They can be arrogant about the Japanese entertainment media they consume. That if something hasn't been distributed outside of Japan, they are better than you for knowing about it before you did.

I don't think incels should be demonized, but there is little to be done about this group of people. They have been a convenient raison d'etre of feminist internet activism; that anyone who likes video games, anime, and has a single negative word about feminism is an incel. Thankfully that era has ended. But the only people can really help incels is either themselves or their families.

Why do mass shooters target innocent people? by [deleted] in AskSaidIt

[–]antares 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You can try reading Elliot Rodgers or Brenton Tarrant's manifesto for start. Shooter manifestos are sometimes autobiographical and detail what they did and why. Their observations of the world aren't necessarily false, but the combination of their social connections or lack of makes certain issues comprise a larger part of their perspective than average.

Example: It is true that Europeans are generally taller than Asians. If Elliot Rodgers was born full-white instead of half-Asian he may have been taller and more attractive to women (the blond, blue-eyed girls he was attracted to). But puberty and early age exposure to pornography created an obsession with sex that was made worse with an inferiority complex.

[–]antares 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Two things about "trans rights activists" I can trace back to feminism:

  1. pronoun-isms, maybe feminists had a point that using 'he' as default (to refer to an unidentified person) can lead to overqualifying the collective achievements of men. For example: the case of an unidentified tournament winner or inventor. Though I think 'he' as default also easily attributes losses or failures to men as well. And now we get "they/fae" third person neopronouns for people obsessed with how a third person perceives them.

  2. the perceived right to a medical procedure (abortions for feminists, gender therapy for trans/gender/sexuals). There is no sloganism or chanting that is a substitute for a proper discussion on bioethics, but because of these movements, this is what we get in public discourse. (I am way more familiar with people getting kicked out from hospitals for not having insurance than having any 'right' to a medical procedure, to be honest.)

I mean this is besides the Marxism or sociopathic word games both of these movements have played in the past. If there happens to be some overlap between Marxist tactics and psychological abuse tactics from cluster B personality types, I will not be surprised at all.

I agree with him to some extent or at least recognize the type of person. In the case of the latter, those types have been living under the same threat of getting fired but for a longer time and with more experience. ;P

Many people were already fired or blacklisted by cultural marxists (2010s feminists). Example: someone getting fired for making a dong joke to his friend as Adria Richards sat behind him. And that wasn't even a guy that was publicly anti-feminist or conservative.

I agree with feminists in that "biological males" shouldn't be in areas designated for women and that children can not consent to sex changes. Yet I don't trust feminism not to revert and reuse lefty intimidation and life ruination tactics if they ever regain the power or Soros bucks they used to have pre-2016.

Why have forums *including this one and similar types* have morphed into news links and news bots now hindering all discussion? by [deleted] in AskSaidIt

[–]antares 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I used to participate in a community specifically for a video game series, and it naturally gravitated to gaming news and discussion of gaming news specifically because:

  • the series experienced a hiatus so any discussion and speculation about the storyline and gameplay have been exhausted

  • the community was not producing new content such as videos, blogs, memes, fan art, or game mods.

There were more people talking than there were people with talent. Before the community died out, it just became gaming news gossip and clickbait. I would much rather have the community write autistic fanfiction of Dante from the Devil May Cry series, Adam Jensen, and Sanic saving the world from the Illuminati and learning the power of friendship than constantly read crappy news articles.

So TL;DR some communities run out of things to do or things to show other people.

[–]antares 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It is easier to get Patreon donations for pornographic works, including derivative works. Online patronage platforms didn't take off (or exist?) pre-2010.

Also derivative works, from fanfiction to video game mods, exits the legal grey zone. So the rights holder may legally own a derivative work, but they will never want someone's SFM porn or smutty fanfic. Anyone with a moderately decent adventure idea is more likely to make it original like their own novel or indie game. Because now, there is a legal precedent to plagiarizing and selling someone else's fanwork.

I strongly disapprove of the corporate and commercial nature of American healthcare; the sale or commercial use of aborted remains. At any point, when someone profits from human death, including war, lethal injection, or abortion, the situation is sketchy in my opinion.

I think there is little point in Lemmy and a Fediverse-compatible message board.

A user that posts on the internet is inevitably going to make alternate accounts so their internet activity isn't consolidated to one post history. There is actually little demand to post on discussion board with a Fediverse account. The fediverse doesn't boost userbases or drive views like a platform conventionally does because everything is subject to complicated instance-federation rules. The whole thing is comprised of tiny puddles pretending to be big oceans (i.e that user registration beg form).

If American corporations chosen principles (freedom of speech) over profits, there wouldn't be the issue of internet censorship. If bio/medical corporations were firstly concerned with the health of their patients rather than acquiring new patients, there wouldn't be the epidemics of myopia, transsexualism, and covid.

I don't know what is going on in people's heads when it happens. I blame it for the incel, coomer, and trans[gender/sexual] phenomenon. A minor can have an innocent interest in cartoon anthro characters or fanfiction, and that is a few clicks away from extreme content that portrays abusive relationships or sexual violence as arousing; or anatomically impossible fantasies, upon which an obsession may develop and can lead someone to try emulating that at the expense of their health (futanari and self-described "dickgirls").

Which of the 7 deadly sins do you think is the worst and why? by goobandit in AskSaidIt

The deadly sins make cool anime characters. But a few of them overlap and generally relate to a lack of self-control. There is nothing inherently wrong with eating ("gluttony") or having sex ("lust"), but either taken to extremes is a detriment to oneself or society.

I think the world is feeling the worst effects of greed and lust. Just imagine how much better the world would be if pornography consumption was reduced and if it wasn't so easy for kids to find it.

I thought of it as

beat = got to the big bad and beat it/him/her up

completed = unlocked every equip and upgrade, found the secret level, etc. Sometimes, there are cheevos that are nonindicative and arbitrary, so they don't really count.

The Terran forces somehow holding off the Zerg at New Gettysburg, and Kerrigan not getting infested would've led to an extremely different chain of events.

Canonically, at the end of this mission, the player's base is overwhelmed by the Zerg (the purple aliens in this video), and Lieutenant Kerrigan is captured by Zerg forces. She gets infected by the Zerg virus and turns into the Queen of Blades, etc.

I just decided to fool around and use my excess resources to destroy the Hive cluster in the map before the mission ends.

It's probably not your idea of a sophisticated vouching system. I imagine its more like a social media, networks, and alias dig. If your accounts are too young, or you said "there are only two genders" on a forum back in 1998, you're out.

Oh. The "special ending" in the video. It's not actually special or much of an ending but it'll unlock the next difficulty without having to playthrough the game.

I definitely had a "strategy" independent of discoverability algorithms.

The numbers sound real small compared to YouTube videos easily hitting the thousands of views. But I'm proud of them as I don't have a following on Twitter, Twitch, YouTube to carry over from.

PeerTube is a federated video hosting platform. It is also software. What happens is that some admin downloads it and deploys it on their server. So there are a bunch of different peertube instances with different domain names.

I can't find it again, but there was an old song that was critical of gaming journalism sung to the tune of Disney's Hercules ("Hercules" => Geoff Keighley). I think it was made around the time of the Doritos fiasco.

Nevermind I found it: https://vidious.librenet.co.za/watch?v=5mrm9fQLNO0

I think it is already on that path. What's happening isn't a new group of SJWs that decided to join the commnity. It is the old team suddenly having a latent woke trigger flipped.

It sounds extremely weird. I've been in their IRC for years and have seen players from the devs clan casually use the n-word without any warnings.

I suspect why they do this is because they don't want a fork to happen. Anyone who can contribute to a fork, either directly or by sponsoring programmers and artists, can get banned for near arbitrary reasons and lose contact with each other.

Their reaction to a fundraiser for a fork:
