Would you give the electric company access to your house to shut off your hot water heater whenever they wanted? ~ They sent me an email telling me it's a great idea.... But I don't want strangers remotely turning off devices in my house.... and my water heater uses gas (not electricity).

They will also put a remote switch on your HVAC as well, so they can turn your AC off for periods, causing it to work harder to catch up. I would never allow them to do this. It will cost you more than the subsidy they pay you to allow it.

You are not supposed to use your finger and this is taught to everyone using this machine each time they use it. A simple Q-Tip will work and is what they usually hand out to each voter.
