Voat is now mostly dominated by a mix of shills(from reddit, activist groups, paid trolls, TLAs, whatever) and stormfronters, who are often indistinguisable in the environment they've created for themselves. And both work to drive off new members who might upset that status quo, by being rude and insulting to new people. After they get a critical mass to dogpile anyone outside, it's hard to turn a forum back. There's a few subs that avoid that through heavy moderation, which of course is a problem as well.

Not sure if you have are already tracking this, but i assume you have a way of seeing who is upvoting troll posts, and correlating those?

One of the keys to the strategy they used successfully to destroy voat was to scare off new users. Whenever there was a major subreddit banning on reddit, a bunch of fake racist/pedo/nazi whatever accounts that had barely posted for months fired up and went into overdrive. My suggestion, unpleasant as it may be, is to moderate the front page to some degree, and try and cultivate a TRUSTED base of mods for major communities to do the garbage work to stop the trolls in them. In my opinion, trying to cultivate a culture and a sufficiently large userbase that their shit is kept off the frontpage would, if nothing else, give a good idea of how large an org they have, if they scale up their efforts with the site's userbase.

On that last point, last I checked, one of the only voat communities that didn't get destroyed by the racist and pedo trolls was FatPeopleHate. They managed to keep the trolld mostly out despite whatever else was going on by having relatively heavy censorship of things unrelated to hating fat people, and a policy that required moderator appeals to be accompanied by a timestamped picture to prove that they weren't fat. I'm no fan of FPH, or of censorship, but it's interesting to see that strange policy seemed to keep the trolls out, almost inadvertantly.

This is exactly what happened to voat. First step was signing up fake racist/psycho rightwinger accounts. Second step was troll pedos posting and getting the sites donations and financial support cut off for CP and drugs. Third step was inserting drama and paranoia with accusations about every other mod secretly being an infiltrator. Fourth step is denial of service attacks to stretch finances even further. Final step, with half the userbase already giving up on things or accusing each other of being a pedo and/or an SRS infiltrator, and no money to hire mods or admins to help, was to massively increase activity from all the the fake racist accounts, and simultaneously invite stormfronters and pol in. After that, voat wasn't much more than a smoldering wasteland filled with a few tired dregs of some of the first banned subreddits. And a bunch of accounts that almost never post unless there's been a major banning on reddit, and then when they do, its with "GUYS WE NEED TO SPAM RACIST MEMES OR THE JEWS WILL TURN US INTO REDDIT."

They'll probably try some variation of this here. Who "they" are, I have no idea. It could be anyone from political activists to some TLA to reddit itself(or a troll firm they hired)
