This is why I never sign anything but a one year lease -- not that having a lease seems to have done you any good -- and when the year is up I act immediately, because if I let it slide even one month it's then assumed by the courts that it's now month-to-month and then as you know I literally have no recourse except to hope the tenant starts doing something illegal and I can get the cops involved.

When my current lease is up I'm selling the property even though I'm going to take a big hit. As tenants have gone they are not even that bad. But I've dropped the rent twice now and every month is still a struggle. And the house is slowly filling up with crap they're collecting.

I got my ass booted off Poal recently, though TBH I was low-level baiting the guy that runs the site so I asked for it. I toyed with going back but frankly I'm not missing anything, the place was weak cheese to put it mildly. Reddit is different, however, because of the huge number of diverse subs and immense number of users a large portion of which are not running around with a banhammer and spoiling for an excuse to impose their sense of justice upon any and all that dare utter a word that does not align with the hivemind. In short Reddit continues to be extremely helpful when I have practical questions about a hobby or my new cell phone or whatever. But I'm very careful to police my language when making a post, because I know that even in the most innocuous subs the morals police are ever vigilant. It's a hint of what living in Russia was no doubt like. You could never be sure which neighbor or acquaintance was waiting for you to slip up and utter something against the state, so that they could report you and curry favor with their overlords.

So I continue to use Reddit, as much as I fucking despise the place. It is heartening to see that subs are starting to post stickied notices pointing to an on-line community for that particular interest that exists elsewhere. The day I no longer need to go to reddit to post questions will be a happy one indeed.

And to be clear I sometimes look elsewhere when I have a question. But reddit has provided more quality solutions over the years than my attempts to "just google it" by a significant margin. Again it's the sheer volume and variety of Redditors. However recently I saw a report that reddit had dropped off the list of most visited sites. So between the place getting less traffic and users going away because they are banned or because they are sick of the BS there its usefulness is no doubt in decline. A trend that most certainly will only accelerate.

I have a battery powered dirtbike. It is an absolute blast to ride. I get about 4 hours of riding on a full charge, which is a respectable amount if I'm just screwing around on the trails so I have no complaints. BUT it also means that longer trails that I used to ride on a gas powered dirtbike are no longer an option. I could buy a second battery but 1. they cost about 1/2 price of the bike itself so it's not going to happen, and 2. the batteries are so heavy that it's not practical to carry a spare one like I used to carry spare gas, but even if I did the range is still not that great.

It's a fun toy motorcycle, that's all it is.

I recall a talk by a researcher who claimed that prior to the introduction of seed oil products in the very early 1900s (or maybe it was the late 1800s) western medicine didn't even have a category called Heart Disease. There were, of course, congenital circulatory system issues and other diseases of the heart but they were relatively rare. Somebody dying of a heart attack due to clogged arteries was literally unheard of.

In the space of about 10 years Heart Disease became a major killer and since then everyone has just accepted it as a fact of life. But it was Crisco that killed them.

Years ago I got a bag of doughnuts and injected them with mushed up tofu. Then I told my nephews they were Boston Cream doughnuts and gave them the bag. Their mother was always trying to get them to eat healthy and they fucking hated it so they figured their uncle had really come through for them.

I'm not sure what your definition of garbage is but I hardly think that a smattering of varied articles -- not all of which are political -- is it. The content doesn't change as quickly as on saiddit, for example, but it is generally fresh enough that I visit once a day. If there's anything to complain about it's the dearth of comments. As of writing there's not a single post on the FP that's higher than 40.

I'm not saying notabug is great. In fact it's rather weak cheese. But it's not garbage either.

Ruqqus looked pretty promising when it started up. For one thing the interface was easily the best of all of the so-called Reddit clones I'd tried. But also, and more important, it claimed that is was all about Free Speech. Looks good, sign me up.

But right off the bat you couldn't enter certain words in comments. I forget what I was commenting on but the forbidden word was probably nigger or something similarly 'incorrect'. The point being that the site was restricting speech right from day one AKA right speech is what we say it is. I'm all for a certain degree of moderation, because otherwise the place can turn into a fucking zoo for anyone trying to have serious discussions. But it's a thin line to walk and not easy at all to execute well.

I hung around for a month or so just out of curiosity but the place just got lamer and lamer. At there start there were some good posts and comments, but any illusion of edginess and "this is a reflection of the real world" went away pretty fast.

Apparently there was a lot of drama behind the scenes but I wasn't interested so didn't bother to try and get involved. When Ruqqus closed down it was no surprise.

Reddit gets away with claiming to be for free speech but then moderating the fuck out of the place only because it's been around forever and has fostered a huge user base that supports that shit. Any site that wants to start today with the same approach is going to die long before it is large enough and perverted enough to be self sustaining.

A place like notabug generally has good content. But if you say anything that goes against the group think you'll be downvoted to invisibility pretty fast so you know where the community in general stands. But at least the moderators don't get involved. So I don't bother to comment on posts on notabug, but I can still enjoy the content.

My current goto desktop distro is Manjaro. Ubuntu LTS for servers.

A couple years ago I wanted to give gaming on Linux a try and of the distros I tried I had the most success with Manjaro. But I also quickly realized that Manjaro was smoother and worked better generally, at least on my hardware. A couple years is a long time and I should probably try out other distros again to see where they're at, but so far I haven't had any reason to switch. Though I felt that way about Mint, until I tried Manjaro.

After struggling unsuccessfully to get any distro to run well on the Atom based laptop that I take on the road I got a Pinebook Pro and it too is running Manjaro. It's a bit heavy though so I recently got a PineTab even though it's still in early access. The OS it ships with -- Ubuntu -- is barely functional so I put something called Mobian -- a mobile version of Debian -- on it and so far I'm pretty pleased. A few things are not fully supported yet but it's working well enough to travel with.

Sitting in a low distraction environment forces you to self reflect, and for many of us it can become very unpleasant. Thinking about painful memories or about where your character falls short is unpleasant and the brain actively seeks to avoid it. And today thanks to cell phones and computers it is even easier to avoid spending time with one's thoughts. This is not a step forward.
