There are some alright users on Voat, but they're playing a waiting game. They think that once the number of users passes a certain point all of the hate speech will magically disappear. I really doubt it. The more obnoxious users have rigged the system there.

I was led here by a post on r/RedditAlternatives. I've been playing around with various Reddit options for a couple weeks now. I'm on Raddle. I'm on Voat. I'm on Tildes. It's not all that dissatisfied with Reddit, but I was curious as to what else was out there.

By the way, how does a brand-new user like me go about creating a new sub? I've been using Saidit for approximately five minutes and can't figure out how to do it.

[–]TimesThreeTheHighest 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

I came here straight from Voat. Two ongoing arguments with other Voat users: 1) Whether a 14 year old who slept with 12 men or so in a year qualifies as a "whore" or was sexually abused, and 2) Whether all women are evil sexual tricksters or not.

That's pretty much the level of most Voat discussion. It seems like Voat's creator understands the problem, but they're stuck in a kind of feedback loop with Reddit now, wherein those purged from Reddit seek out that site.

I feel like the only way to make a site like that an authentic alternative to Reddit is to engage with it, so I do. I have to limit these engagements to a few minutes a day, but hey, it's something to do. Why not troll the trolls? It's not like I give much of a fuck about people with obviously retarded opinions!

Not all that much actually, mostly because my birth dad ran off when I was six. No need to cry on my account, I got a much better dad soon after.

My father is/was Mexican. I don't even know if he's still alive.

My mom is mostly Irish with some Scandinavian thrown in. My mom's side of the family migrated from Ireland to Vancouver Island and the Yukon Territory, then some of them moved to Illinois, then my grandma moved to Montana where she raised my mom. That's about the extent of my knowledge.

To me the worst examples aren't political, but are found in the health-related articles. Some weird college conducts a study that "proves" carrots are the key to eternal life. World proceeds to flip the fuck out. Next month another study "proves" that carrots give you scabies. Carrot market crashes. Riots in the streets. A lot of people are easily led.

A lot of people have a great faith in statistics. This is often ironic because many of these same people don't have the fullest understanding of how statistics work. Look! Here's a chart! Look! Here are numbers, lined up in a row! Look! Here are some percentages! All of which means that I'm 100% correct!

This, and wading into the weaknesses of their pet study usually isn't worth the effort. They just keep returning to the items above, like a snake eating its own tail.
