Right... for like the first 3 or 4 years that I was sexually active I didn't even know I was supposed to come from sex. Now a whole new generation is being groomed to become submissive sex objects for the enjoyment of men. The way I see information about our own bodies being withheld from women makes me think it's absolutely deliberate.

My parents never brought us up to believe in Santa Claus because they believed it's lying, and they wanted us to be able to trust that what they tell us is true. We would play pretend about Santa Claus, but we all knew it was only pretend. Now I'm actually quite thankful to them for that, even though many people react with horror when I tell them about it. I like to think it has given me the ability to think critically and not believe everything I hear. And funnily enough, if I ever told another child that Santa Claus wasn't real, they just refused to believe me. Nothing was spoiled for anyone.

Wow! This completes rings true to my own experience. I don't actually know my IQ score, but I have had extensive cognitive testing as part of autism assessment and I maxed out several areas of the test. I've always been told I am gifted from a young age, and excel at art and music. I am very sensitive and have some special abilities such as perfect pitch and synaesthesia. I am diagnosed autistic. I hope I don't seem arrogant by including myself in this category.

Sometimes I still feel really sad about how limiting my school experience was. For example, the music department was just terrible, and many of the subjects were too dumbed down to interest me. I wonder what I might have been able to achieve with the right environment and support. I was bullied because I didn't fit in, and I actually started to fail my schoolwork on purpose so that I could at least stop standing out intellectually. I stopped not only speaking up and participating in class, but became selectively mute while at school. I don't think the teachers even noticed because they only saw us for one period a day.

There are many times when I have wanted to pursue an ambition, but was basically bullied until I was forced to drop out. This continues to be an issue for me as an adult, especially in employment. I'm now a solo entrepreneur because working with other people does not work for me, which puts me in a more precarious and vulnerable position economically.

I began struggling with my mental health and dissociating from the age of 8 or 9. I felt very aware of not fitting in, but didn't know exactly why. I forced myself into boxes and surpressed my intelligence and creativity in order not to stand out. It's only recently, after receiving my autism diagnosis, that I have been able to start to understand. Despite my intelligence, I had a kind of blind spot when it came to my deficiencies (which is why they are deficiencies, I guess). I spent years believing there was something terribly wrong with me, so this came as a relief to learn.

I was into yaoi was a teen (well over a decade ago). At that age, I preferred these fantasy feminine men well over any actual men, which I believe is quite common in teenage girls as it's a safe zone in which to explore sexuality. I'm also autistic and was a complete tomboy at that age, so I may well have been tempted to identify as trans if that had been a thing back then (thank goodness it wasn't). As an adult, I have tended to date more masculine kind of men and my current fiance is super masculine. I think it's something a lot of (straight) girls grow out of.

I have always noticed from a young age that Americans appear obsessed with race... for example, so much of American humour relies on racial stereotypes that we don't necessarily have in Europe. Now I see peope trying to impose an American analysis of race on Europe. In Europe of all places, you can't just treat "white people" as a homogeneous blob. You had better be clear which white people you are talking about. We define each other by nationality much more than by our heritage or our race (e.g. I am of Polish descent but would never call myself that, not speaking a word of Polish). I know many Finns who resent being told they have "white privelege" after enduring centuries of occupation by Sweden and Russia. Finland never participated in the slave trade. Our immigrants came here to work or as refugees. That's not to say we shouldn't deal with racism that exists here, just stop trying to superimpose an analysis that doesn't work for our population, history or culture.

It took me until I was 28 to get diagnosed with autism, and even then it was because I had the money to go private. One of the major reasons why it was missed was because medical professionals only ever looked at clusters of symptoms in isolation and not as part of a bigger picture. Then just gave up on me when their "treatments" didn't work. It's not hard to see how this approach could have disastrous consequences for an autistic child (diagnosed or not) who ends up in the gender identity clinic.

I think the reason why many women are into natural foods, alternative therapies, etc. is because the mainstream healthcare system has failed them so badly. I have a lot of personal experience with this – in 2013, I became very sick with a severe virus and nobody could help me. I was sick for years on end, and I basically had doctors telling me I was mentally ill (despite testing positive for the virus showing a very clear trigger). When I was in this position, alternative therapies became very attractive because they offered to actually help me. The one I tried actually did help. I am not an anti-vaxxer, but I completely sympathise with women who have no trust in medicine/science, because I have experienced its failings first-hand. I think the medical community should start taking responsibility for those failures rather than painting those women as crazy or naive. It has been my experience more than a few times that the advice I got from other women was better than anything offered by my doctor.

I am a tall woman as well. I used to do various martial arts and boxing. In mixed training, the different in strength between men and women is completely obvious. I am physically bigger or a similar size to a lot of men, but despite that, they have a huge advantage over me. You don't need to be a boxer to know that – if you've ever had a boyfriend manhandle you, either as part of a play fight, during sex or an act of aggression, you will know.

Just as an interesting side note, I have a younger sister who has always been shorter than me, and when we were kids she was actually stronger. Probably still is. I didn't grow up with boys so I can't comment on that from personal experience.

The strongest people I know are the ones who have been to hell and back. Falling apart at being called the wrong pronoun suggests a lack of life experience, which is to be expected in young people. But we are not helping those young people become resilient by pandering to their every wish.

I hadn't even considered autism until someone mentioned that autistic women are often misdiagnosed with BPD and I started to look into it. It was a better fit immediately, going right back to early childhood. In the end, I had 8 hours of testing and assessment so I have that absolute certainty, and honestly I've been doing so much better now that I'm not so confused all the time. I wanted to have that certainty and clarity for myself. I understand that there can be really high barriers to getting diagnosed, such as lack of finances or lack of knowledge about autism in females among professionals. But I also feel uneasy with the large numbers of self-diagnosed people in the community who are speaking over and on behalf of autistic people.

I was late-diagnosed with autism, and was in and out of mental health services my whole life. In hindsight, none of the treatments worked on me because the mental health issues were only a secondary symptom of my undiagnosed autism. No one ever looked at the whole picture, so I was completely missed. They never asked why I'm depressed, they just put me on meds when CBT was unsuccessful. Of course the meds didn't work either, and only caused more damage. These could be seen as inadvertent attempts to cure my autism. I wonder how many people/kids showing up at gender clinics also have undiagnosed autism. This is particularly an issue with women and girls because we present differently to the typical male presentation, so professionals don't know what to look for.

I explained to my autistic female friend (I'm also autistic) that I think womanhood is defined by biology, not by stereotypes and this was her response. My own way of thinking is not black and white at all and it's one autism trait that has never fit me. When I analyse something, I see all the shades of grey and can understand where different perspectives are coming from. Maybe it's because of my ability to hyperfocus on things that interest me – I'm not satisfied until I have considered something from every angle.

I was only diagnosed this year and thought I had finally found my people. So imagine my dismay when I started exploring the autism community, only to find that gender ideology is unquestioningly accepted and even celebrated, as there are disproportionately high numbers of autistic people identifying as trans. I don't know what I was expecting. I myself have never been one to go along with something just because everyone else is doing it, and I thought that other autistic people would be like me. When I get interested in a topic, I will research it to death and analyse it from every angle. But instead, I see the same kind of group think and bullying of dissidents as I do in wider society.

This is a problem for me too. I have been in abusive relationships and friendships because I didn't see the warning signs. Then I stay in those relationships because I don't know how to get out of them. Before I was diagnosed, I had a minor existential crisis because I felt really isolated and didn't know who I could trust. It was really difficult for me to make friends because people keep saying things they don't mean and I can't tell the difference (e.g. "Let's go for coffee sometime!" But then avoid making an actual date...). I couldn't understand why I was being treated that way and I saw it as really dishonest and flaky.

As a teen, I think I would have been very vulnerable to this ideology, had it been popular in my day. I didn't fit in socially and was bullied for a time. I was not interested in stereotypically feminine things. My friends at school were all quirky, nerdy, tomboy types (a few have since come out as lesbians, though I am straight). Even now, I find it very difficult to befriend women. All my closest friends are male. It's not that I don't want to be friends with women, but they don't want to be friends with me. Men feel so much more straightforward to interact with, and they don't read into every little thing that I say (usually I say exactly what I mean and mean what I say, but NTs always manage to find hidden subtext that isn't there).

Funny how we are accused of "erasing trans people's existence" when they are the ones denying the very thing that makes them trans in the first place.

I kind of feel like gender ideology is an extreme version of "girls can be anything they want to be". Now "anything" includes actually becoming a "man". People can't tell the difference between biology and stereotypes anymore.

I had this conversation with a friend recently, and she just could not grasp what I was saying. She kept saying "but if you define women by they're biology, you're saying that women are inferior to men and should only aspire to be mothers and have babies!". No no no no.

Women are physically smaller and weaker than men (on average), and can give birth. Those are biological facts. The idea that women are inferior because of this fact, or that women should only give birth is a regressive gender norm.

We need to start separating out the facts from the gender nonsense.

I don't have PCOS, but I have suffered other female-only health problems. I achieved complete recovery, but only because of the advice of online communities of women. If it were up to my doctors, I would have been on ineffective and harmful medications for the rest of my life. These networks are so essential, especially when we are so badly let down by the medical/healthcare system.

Apparently replacing the word woman with "people with ovaries" wasn't enough, because they still come in and put "people without ovaries" in charge of a sub for PCOS!!! You know, polycystic ovarian syndrome. What business does a male have being a mod of such a sub? They don't! Unless the real reason they are there is to control what women can and can't say about our bodies. Patriarchy in action.

Totally agree! Yesterday I saw some idiot on Twitter saying cis-women are privileged and therefore cannot understand transwomen's trauma. Excuse me?! I've been through domestic abuse and multiple sexual assaults. I have been driven to the brink of suicide by my abusive ex-partner who took intimate photos of me and distributed them online without my consent. I have been dismissed, unnecessarily medicated and gaslit by the medical system which caused my autism to go undiagnosed until I was in my late 20s (and even then, the cost of getting the diagnosis was expensive financially). I have suffered "women's diseases" for which there is no cure because the research simply hasn't been done. I have suffered the severe side effects of birth control, which included 6 years of chronic pain, because I wasn't given the information I need to make decisions about my own body. "Cis privilege" is an insult.

Gosh, that's horrible! Sorry that happened to you. I have a feeling it completely depends what kind of circles you move in. I am "out" as GC, but no one has disowned me even if they disagree, and I wonder if it's because most people I hang around with are 30+ (I myself am late 20s). I would look for friends outside of political circles, and more in social groups revolving around interests and in older age groups. And we are always here online if you want to vent to like-minded people!

I agree, and I believe this misuse of language is fully intended to confuse and mislead. Speech is not a hate crime, but it can be hateful. However, I don't see these people protesting against the hate and abuse that women receive online on a daily basis. This is not really about hate, it's about controlling speech.

Gender Critical and Atheism by -thedarkhorse- in GenderCritical

[–]RestingWitchface 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm a Christian, but I have a very analytic way of thinking, and I test all my beliefs. I was very deep into apologetics and read a lot of atheist literature too. I acknowledge that I hold spiritual beliefs that I cannot scientifically prove, but that bring value to my life.

I was brought up in a non-denominational church that was fairly progressive. There were some rules about women not being pastors/elders, although they were allowed to preach. However, women were treated with respect. I didn't see any misogyny or sexual misconduct. I was a tomboyish autistic teenager and I was very much made to feel loved and part of the community. In this church, people practiced what they preached and were kind and loving towards one another, and towards the outside community. They were not judgemental but supported each other to live good lives. They really came through for me when I was going through difficult times.

This has informed my feminism, because growing up, I always saw women treated with respect. It was a shock for me to go out into the world and see how badly women are treated in mainstream society. In my young adulthood, I was led astray by liberal feminist ideas and was in several abusive relationships. Perhaps that was my way of surviving in such a world. It was reconnecting with my Christian upbringing that led to me radical feminist principles (anti-porn, anti-prostitution), and set the standards for the kind of relationships I want to have with men.

When it comes to being gender critical, I think that's where my analytical side kicks in. I believe in science and in differentiating between scientific fact and spiritual/philosophical beliefs. I first questioned the ideology when I saw TRAs pushing for children to transition, which seemed completely wrong to me. I couldn't understand why they would campaign to give children less options. Later, I was peaked by the behaviour of TiMs towards women, and Caitlyn Jenner winning "Woman of the Year" and that famous quote "The hardest thing about being a woman is deciding what to wear". It was clear to me they have no idea about being a woman, and have no empathy for women, despite claiming to be one. I recognised gaslighting and silencing tactics from the abusive relationships I was in, and it put me on the defence. It contradicts everything I believe to be good and right. Furthermore, I believe in truth and honesty.

My own journey in life has been one of going through trials and learning self-acceptance. So when it comes to ideas like "words are literal violence" or taking hormones and undergoing extensive surgeries to become one's "authentic self", it doesn't ring true. I don't believe it's necessarily helpful to spare people any discomfort they might experience, but that instead we should equip people to be strong in the face of challenges.

Eventually they'll just call women numbers to make it even less gendered by russkayacabbage in GenderCritical

Isn't it crazy how quickly they were able to get into such a position of power that they can control speech on major internet platforms? Meanwhile, the women's lib movement started over a century ago, and here we are in 2020, still being prevented from speaking in the public forum. It's almost as if sexism actually exists, and TRAs are not the vulnerable minority they claim themselves to be!

This is what bothers me about the whole ban. The whole idea of Reddit is that you can choose what you see based on which subs you subscribe to. If you don't like what you read in a sub, you don't have to subscribe. But instead, they want to stop everyone else from reading things they don't like too.

Hello, fellow autistic! I was diagnosed only 3 months ago, so I am very new to the autistic community. However, I was immediately struck by how much trans and gender ideology has taken over there. I joined a couple of women's groups on Facebook and already left again because they banned gendered language (e.g. "Hello ladies!") and I was attacked multiple times for having the wrong opinions. I have never been one to go along with a crowd, and I thought I would be in better company among autistic people, so I'm disappointed that it's not the case. I find it very worrying how uncritically the number of trans and NB autistic people is being accepted.
