Yeah, the doctors labeled her female because of her genitals and it's thanks to those same genitals she menstruates. But I guess genitals are irrelevant, right?

How come people with male genitals don't menstruate though? 🤔 I'm starting to think that genitals must have something to do with menstruation and with the sex you get "assigned" at birth. But who can tell.

Also, do you know that male cats also menstruate? I identify as a male cat and I'm menstruating right now, that's all the proof needed!

I don't disagree that abortion is not the only right that's important. And abortion is important for all women. Abortion is crucial for women who already have children - 59% of women who have abortions are already mothers! So abortion does a lot of good to women who have children.

And yes, protecting mothers is crucial.

Abortion in the the US is legal but in many states it's effectively extremely limited and hard to obtain. Women in the US are focusing on abortion because one of the major parties is trying to destroy abortion rights in order to pander to the religious right. And in many states, they have succeeded in making it really hard for women, some states have only one abortion clinic and regular doctors don't perform abortions. There are a bunch of fake abortion clinics (pregnancy crisis centers) that harass women into carrying to term. That's why American women focus on abortion so much - because there are many people working tirelessly to take that right away from us.

Economic rights are important but bodily autonomy is even more crucial. That's why the right to say no to sex, even in a marriage, and the right to abortion are basic human rights that are non negotiable.

If you don't want a cancer diagnosis to bankrupt people (including those that do have health insurance), you're just a freeloader. You got cancer or type 1 diabetes? Just deal with it, don't ask for free treatment!

So you grew up taking abortion rights for granted. Abortion rights by themselves are not enough, true, but without them, women suffer tremendously. Abortion rights mean that the woman gets to choose, not men. Workplace protections matter tremendously but abortion rights are more or less equal to that.

And of course that women don't have sex all the time but they don't need abortions every month either. A third of women will have an abortion in their lifetime and not having access to it would be life changing. Abortion rights are for those once or twice in a lifetime situations when the woman finds herself pregnant and doesn't want to be pregnant anymore. Forcing women to carry to term will have a profound impact forever on 1/3 of women and the other 2/3 will always have to live in fear that pregnancy will ruin them because they can't opt out.

"abortion rights alone doesn’t help women’s rights"

What? That's like saying that the right to vote doesn't help women's rights organization the right to divorce or say no to sex don't help women's rights. Abortion rights are part of women's rights, not a means to help with women's rights. Abortion rights are an end by themselves. Just like the right to not be fired because of pregnancy.

Ask him for a list or something. No one said a man being short is a defect but men are on average taller than women. There is significant overlap between men and women, that's true, but it's also true that men are taller than women. This doesn't mean that a short man is any less of a man or that a tall woman is any less of a woman.

Are there such things as "femininity" and "masculinity" or are they just imaginary things humans made up? by Nohope in GenderCritical

[–]Realwoman 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Actually, men are larger and more muscular than women for the same reason other male animals are bigger and stronger than females - the females invest a lot of resources into making bigger gametes and in mammals, in carrying the young and nursing them, so the males are the ones that physically compete with other males for access to females. Male polar bears are bigger than female polar bears because they fight each other during mating season and the stronger one gets to mate and spread his genes. Human males are basically built to fight other males (upper body strength in humans is way more sexually dimorphic than leg strength for example), that's why they're more violent and physically aggressive than women.

Now of course, violence as part of the culture is definitely a thing and culture in general has a giant influence on humans. So I don't disagree with what you're saying.

If "gender" ("femininity" and "masculinity") is biological because of sexual dimorphism, then why are we fighting against "gender" when things like having muscles are biologically "masculine" and things like being short are biologically "feminine"? by Nohope in GenderCritical

[–]Realwoman 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You're conflating sex differences with gender. Also, sex differences exist on a spectrum, they don't determine sex. Gametes do. Men are taller than women on average but many women are taller than many men and that's normal. Doesn't mean that tall women have a different gender from average heightened women.

Also, while a feminine face is more likely to be considered beautiful and a masculine face is more likely to be considered handsome, facial attractiveness has more to do with one's facial features and bone structure that's independent of hormones but depends on other genes.

I definitely don't agree with trans anything. I find this article very informative:

https://quillette.com/2019/09/24/no-one-is-born-in-the-wrong-body/

When people talk about masculinity and femininity, they often talk about appearance, you yourself mentioned makeup and clothes, as well as muscles. There's a good reason why physically strong men with a lot of muscles are considered masculine - this is part of make secondary sexual characteristics. Also why men should not be allowed to participate in women's sports.

I have not seen any evidence for male and female brains, so I don't believe that's a thing. I like what this article had to say on the matter, warning, it's long but really good:

https://theelectricagora.com/2020/06/02/on-sex-and-gender-identity-perspectives-from-biology-neuroscience-and-philosophy/

There are differences between men and women, both physical and non physical but things like personality are more of a spectrum and many, many people differ from the "standard" for their sex. I think it's both nature and nurture, both biological and social. As for what is considered feminine and masculine when it comes to behavior, I already said that a lot of it varies by culture a lot and it's not universal, except for some clear examples of men being more aggressive and prone to violence and women being the ones taking care of children. But beyond that, it's extremely subjective.

Are there such things as "femininity" and "masculinity" or are they just imaginary things humans made up? by Nohope in GenderCritical

[–]Realwoman 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Humans are a sexually dimorphic species, so there are actual differences between men and women related to reproduction, as well as attracting the opposite sex. That's why muscles on a man are considered masculine and attractive, as well as round hips on a woman. The way most people use makeup is by increasing contrast on the face - which makes the face more feminine looking - see here https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Gender-illusion-by-Richard-Russell-The-same-face-appears-female-left-when-the-eyes-and_fig11_224946627

Also, men are more aggressive and more prone to violence, which is well established.

Now, societies have taken those differences and amplified them. Gender roles were created. What is considered masculine and feminine is very different in different cultures, especially when it comes to things like clothing or hair styles. Skirts for example are considered feminine in most of the the west but they're masculine in Scotland. Long hair is not universally considered feminine at all.

I did experience all the dramatic changes after the Berlin wall fell, well, I was too young for the first few years and to me, that was just the normal state of things, with the adults talking about the past.

But then, I was a very curious kid and I loved reading about science and about pregnancy and genetics, so I knew so much by the time I was 9 and I guess my perception is skewed.

[–]Realwoman 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Time was increased because the majority of women overcome HPV on their own without any need for treatment and cervical cancer is very slowly growing. So annual screenings resulted in women being over treated when their bodies would have overcome the infection on their own. So if you have a normal pap smear test, you can wait for 3 more years before the next test and you'll be fine. If something is found the next time, it will still be pretty on the time to treat it. Also, for women over 30, they do an HPV test plus a pap smear and if they're both good, you can wait for 5 more years. It's based on data.

There was a lot anti vax propaganda about the vaccine.

A company's research shows that many users use their product incorrectly and they air an ad about how to use the product correctly and somehow that's demeaning? Are all educational videos demeaning now, they assume that the viewer doesn't know about the subject, correct? Are teenage girls supposed to naturally know how to use tampons, so it's demeaning to teach them?

I don't think childcare can replace maternity leave at all. It's cruel to force a new mother to separate from her baby and the US needs an actual maternity leave policy.

In summary, we show that bone sexual dimorphism is already present at 6 years of age, with boys having stronger bones than girls, the relation of which is influenced by body composition and likely attributable to differential adaptation to mechanical loading.

One more nail in the coffin of the stupid idea that men and women can compete in sports.

How do you feel about the word "privilege"? by moody_ape in GenderCritical

[–]Realwoman 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What annoys me to no end is that western privilege or American privilege is rarely acknowledged by those participating in the oppression Olympics. That's the real privilege out there, even if you're middle class or poor by western standards, you're still better off than the majority of people around the world. A white person from a communist country has a much worse life than a black American TiM. But somehow people forget that.

I had an abortion some years ago. It was not a financial burden on me and I realize that I was very lucky and privileged to just be able to get it when I needed it. But what about all the women in the world that can't afford it? So I started donating to international organizations that help underprivileged women around the world with reproductive health, including abortion. I also started donating to doctors without borders. Because they help the actually oppressed people around the world. It just makes me so angry when I'm see people living cushy lives crying about other's privileges.

Great article. "His uterus" and "her penis" are not word combinations that make any sense whatsoever. Also, doctors are supposed to treat patients ethically, not comply with ridiculous self mutilation demands. A hysterectomy is not a minor procedure and can have severe consequences for a lifetime, no ethical doctor should have to just perform it because the patient feels like it.

Interesting. But there is a solid evolutionary explanation for why females are more empathetic and more caring about other people - they're the ones taking care of babies. This seems to be true for all female mammals. Now for humans, it makes sense that caring fathers are more likely to have their offspring survive but I don't know if that has been demonstrated.

Of course it is good to teach children empathy. It's interesting that autism (which is a disorder of empathy) presents differently in girls and in boys and girls have a better prognosis in general. It can't be all because of socialization because autistic girls are less likely to pick up on subtle cues about gender stereotypes.

Also, the fact that men are more aggressive is pretty well established. Testosterone is a hell of a drug

I mean, they got famous as actors, it's too much for us to expect that actors are intellectual. Actors know how to act, that's a separate skill from being capable of critical thinking and complex analysis. Writing, on the other hand, requires a lot of deep thought, also, it's pretty obvious from the Harry Potter books that JKR is very well read and erudite.

Yes, but you can't completely erase true differences, the same way women can't become as tall and as strong as men even if they train and eat the right way. Men will always be more aggressive and male aggression is demonstrated in a variety of species. Testosterone is a hell of a drug.

Now on how to prevent suicide, that's a complicated topic.

It's not just socialization, baby girls are more interested in faces than baby boys and greater empathy is observed in most female mammals since they're the ones taking care of the young.
