Bane wasn't a mod at the time, though he always was in close contact with them. Others may have differing opinions, but I wouldn't assign responsibility to a single mod. The things that turned me off personally to the whole thing:

  • The sub in my view didn't get the number of posts to warrant changes that further restricted what users could post. At the time maybe there'd be 35-40 posts/day, which for the number of mods they have seems low.
  • The mods started getting into petty arguments with the users upon being called out on what they were doing and would play little games where a user would ask a question about the rules and get a response like "well I'm not 'on duty' right now so I can't answer that"

I never got into one of these arguments with a mod, but reading them started to really bug me after awhile, because it seemed like the mod would try to goad a user into doing something against the rules so another mod could flex their authority against that user. And even though it was only one or two mods who would get into these arguments, I never saw any of the other ones publicly to knock that shit off.

I have no problem with a private citizen doing what they need to do to keep their family safe and healthy, provided they aren't infringing on others' right to do the same. That is a sane and reasonable thing for any individual to do.

I have a major problem when a public health official enacts policy completely the opposite of what they are personally doing to keep their own family safe and healthy. The legal system should crack down hard on those people, and society should have no tolerance for officials acting in such a manner.

I've been trying to avoid chiming into this whole "controversy" honestly. I'm tired of dancing to the left's tune on what I should be outraged (or not outraged) by.

But in practical terms it seems as though it is effectively illegal to use lethal force against a black person, and the burden of proof is heavily shifted towards the individual using it having absolutely no other means of de-escalating the situation. "Message received" as Elon Musk would say.

In the 10th Anniversary book Watterson wrote a brief commentary on this comic where he mentions reading a bunch of art critique books to get a feel for how these articles were written. That book was released 25 years ago, and I don't even remember when this particular comic was first published.
