I agree. There are two problems. One, especially in the USA, is the identification with the USA, especially among the people who would most benefit, Red Tribe. Second, a large part of the commercial class, punditry and political powers like their empire and want to keep it. The USA has a fairly indolent population. There are many among the underclass and fringes who would like to exit the USA. But most people won't do this without "permission" from a perceived leader. In the case of Red Tribe that's Republicans and Conservatism, Inc. who consider the American Empire to be a Holy Sacrament and are deeply enriched by being the controlled opposition. Remember, the Republican Party was founded to crush rebellion and secession, to promote crony capitalism, and has existed for decades be excommunication of anyone on the right who strays from the NeoCon/imperialism party line. I think that the USA is going to have to become a lot more fractured and probably poorer (too many people just cope because they can still feed themselves) before this becomes a serious possibility. Texas is a possible exception, but in most places people have virtually no connection to their region either socially or in terms of their identity.
