are you me?? i felt so similar when i was a teenager. no gay spaces for miles other than scary adult only places and sex shops and a culture of traditional white christianity around me that made it hard to authentically be me. and yeah not towing the party line and having "wrongthink" makes it so hard to open up to others and feel supported. i completely understand how you feel.

but the good part is life is so much more than gender politics. it doesnt feel like it all the time but it is. life is playing video games, getting ice cream, riding your bike or driving your car, sharing moments of absolute hysterical laughter over the silliest shit at 2 AM. even if your friends and you disagree in niche ideals it doesnt mean they cant support you in other facets of your life. i know the culture now is to disavow anyone who spekas out but you can still have meaningful friendships even when you dont agree. part of maturing is learning how to pick your battles and when to fight and when to let it go even if you dont want to. :)

never let anyone make you feel alone because you arent like them. there are people out here who stand by you even when you cant see them. in the meantime you can take solace in the other parts of your life with your friends that you and them can agree on.

im not aggressively feminine myself but i think part of it is because of how i grew up. other girls would say "you have to wear bras from victorias secret" (actual quote from a classmate in middle school) but my family didnt have the money for that (and im big and most physical retailers dont carry clothes that fit me espescially not fancy underwear stores. it's humiliating and expensive buying nice bras.)

a lot of unspoken rules like "you have to shave" "you have to lighten your dark skin" "you have to do XYZ" blew right past me because im autistic as well.....not including the things i cant/dont do because of the sensory issues like makeup and shaving. i keep my hair short for the same reason: tangles hurt much worse for me than they do for the average person so i keep my hair short and dont have to deal with it. as a result im not very feminine and people assume im a lesbian or a TiF.

ive spoken my peace about it in the past but most other girls didnt care. if theyre comfortable with long hair and shaved legs and thongs and makeup then thats their decision........but it does bother me nevertheless. probably some latent insecurity on my part if im being honest. i do feel maybe some women do this because its just second nature at this point....they've done it so long its just familiar and comfortable. or maybe some of them do it because they dont feel safe not performing femininity. i cant claim to know everyones life and far be it from me to impose my will on others.....

only tangentially related but i had to use a mens room once (single user) and the urinal was placed just so that if i had leaned forwards on the toilet i could have drank from it like a fountain. it was clean (thank GOD) but it was too stupid to ignore. whose design choice was that??? why do men have so few stalls in the multi-user bathrooms??? public buildings should have sensible bathrooms. i was at a restaurant a different time where the bathroom was literally a converted closet that was hardly big enough for the door to avoid hitting the fixtures. asinine!

you know it's funny, i very recently had someone attack me out of nowhere and my aunt told me i should allow myself to be more selective with who i accept as a friend. it can be difficult to tell who is worth my time and energy. after growing apart from my last set of friends (in which i was the only girl 90% of the time...y i k e s) i've been meaning to find people i can communicate and bond with that i'm not afraid to be myself around. i'm always censoring how i feel and making myself smaller for other peoples benefit, just once id love to not have to do that.
