In recent years I've speculated that the level of criminalization of having the images might boil down to trying to protect the powerful. Then again, it might just be that the feds love their low hanging fruit. They'll nail someone to the wall for having pics on their devices and shame them in the media, but they will not go after the people who created that content? Epstein's clients still not prosecuted?? It rather takes the thunder out of accusations directed at the lesser offenses.

Yep, slugging it out with random dishonest loudmouths on Twitter and Reddit is fine and dandy but for friends that aren't that close, too deep into a tribe, or everyday acquaintances I merely scrape away at the edges of the iceberg. For gaming, game chat isn't the best medium for typing up long statements about politics and I try to pick my breaches of narrative carefully so I'm not just battling with them about everything. Most of what I have done involves helping people in more populist directions on topics they're already open and agreeable to, such as healthcare or censorship (i.e. capitalists in countries with national healthcare plans recognize that private insurance is a failed concept, and that's why the public doesn't want it)

Sadly all this is going to enrage them as they will believe your targeting their core values and that will likely lead to overt rejection.

Indeed I've crossed that line before, mainly with friends who were so open and forward about their not-mainstream politics that I thought they'd be open to hearing me out on. As it would turn out, they had TDS and wound up flailing in disarray, one in particular swung between "I don't want to talk about politics anymore", exploding out of the blue a year later in my private messages demanding answers about how Trump was better than Hillary would have been that I was more than ready to give, and flipping back to "don't ever talk to me about politics again" before I could even finish.

Needless to say one has to choose carefully or burn as many bridges as Jimmy has.

Although I get what you're saying and have long tried to play nice with acquaintances of nearly every political stripe, it's dismaying to say that there are still a whole lot who haven't freed themselves from the Matrix yet. A friend who is a solar panel buff was grumbling at me because he'd shared this article around and some clueless critic said he "trusted" California's decisions because it's "broadly blue", before doing some hand wringing about corporations being off-grid or something. I game with a few... "progressives" (as they call themselves) and the most vocal of them has some pretty tribal takes and cognitive dissonance on policy. Refused to let her mother come to her house because she was "anti-vaxxer". Thinks Mitch McConnell's brain is going but doesn't think Pelosi or Biden have problems (but admitted that Feinstein was too old, I guess). When I said "the US wants to throw down with Russia and China at the same time" the response was "I don't think Biden wants WWIII, he's just putting the military over there so they don't... start something". All those ex-Bernie staffers made that ceasefire video for Bernie, and wasn't that cute?

That said I usually just tell people I'm an independent, mostly so they don't immediately jump to the conclusion I belong to a particular camp the moment I happen to trip one of the tribal boundaries such as disapproving of the wrong kinds of wars or criticizing whoever the current president happens to be.

How fitting that these ruins now decorate the grounds of the sad Tempel Museum. Nothing could more perfectly represent the state of the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany, and Merkel’s legacy in 2023. The former chancellor coasted on the successes of prior statesmen, waved in lunatic policy after lunatic policy merely to shore up her own political position, subjected Germans to some of the longest and hardest pandemic restrictions on the Continent, and then bowed out of office before facing the consequences of her mismanagement and incompetence. Divine forces have transformed Koch’s exercise in Merkel idolatry into a withering commentary on the state of things.

I'm surprised it wasn't already plain enough for a lot of people to see. Trump beat all 20-something Republican bozos including Jeb Bush (please clap) and despite the entire system throwing their weight behind Hillary while screaming about Trump being a groupie fondling conman that would become the next Hitler, he beat her too. The drama of the 1/6 "Insurrection" carefully distracts from how that day started as the Stop the Steal protest questioning the election results favoring Biden, and meanwhile, these geriatric ghouls falling apart on camera haven't demonstrated an ability to serve the public better, deal with COVID which was used to try and kneecap the populists in '20's election, or even to manage foreign policy any more intelligently. Plus after all this time the establishment has no one they can run against Trump, Democrat or Republican. Trump, worst of the worst, literal Hitler and Satan surging with the dark power of Putin's mind sorcery, and his supporters are more stoked about bringing him back than anyone else's supporters are about anything.

Because most people with an opinion on politics are what gamers would call "filthy casuals". They haven't held a magnifying lens up to it the way people here have and they still believe what politicians and the media say their track records are. It's Good Party (probably the major party their family raised them to be) vs. Evil Party, and they rightly fear what the latter party has done while being ignorant of their party's hand in it.

One might compare it to the archetype of a guru living at the top of a mountain. Do large amounts of people give up daily life and crowd the mountaintops to become gurus? No, because that's more effort/hardship than most are willing to deal with. For that same reason, gurus aren't usually leaders either. And neither do they become politicians (or vice versa).

Feels bad, man. More than a decade ago I read a sci-fi story short about AI being used this exact same way. The thrust of this story is that in the US, AI was used to maximize efficiency, make working hell, and shut below average workers out of the workforce until the oligarchs became all powerful and had a problem with what that WEF guy called "useless eaters", while in Australia AI benefited everyone creating the kind of world past generations thought the future would bring us.

Even worse? This story generously assumed that the 99% would be sheltered in projects instead of being left in the streets like present day reality has wrought.

I'm going to be frank: it's bigotry. Certainly there are those who want to fan the flames of division with idpol but I'm even seeing leftists I thought were better than this weighing in to shit on him, and it seems like most of it is rooted in him being white and singing country. No credit given that the "right" is growing more in common with the "left", too much attention to his race and genre, and a weird fixation on that line about welfare above anything else in the song.

In spite of the refrain being about working poor and earning a weakening dollar, both very real and nonpartisan problems, a lot of people want to grasp at straws over whatever they found that sounds remotely conservative so they can call him 'fascist' and 'nazi'.

I take some issue with the welfare nonsense but that's nitpicking when you've got a revolution brewing.

Well said. So much more can be gained by talking about the falling dollar than fretting over what he might have meant by anything else in the song.

The US has a rotten culture of being irreverent towards people with low paying jobs. It's just fine to make a mess of things, because it's someone else's job to clean it up, and making things needlessly hard for them is just fine because hey, it's a job. Or as the old Goldman Sachs Elevator (parody) account once tweeted, "If you work the kind of job where you wear a name tag, nobody actually cares what your name is."

I'd be more willing to trust them than the people at the top of their corporations, though.

Q: How would you feel if the Justice Democrats in congress went on a permanent "White male privilege is the only problem in America" tour and then attempted to persuade you that this is how we get Medicare4All? I like turtles. PRaise the turtle! by SudoBreakSandwich in WayOfTheBern

You might be onto something! The Squad could tour the country, spreading awareness of Medicare4All and how someday we'll finally achieve it once we've finally gotten enough people on board for the idea, while also sternly warning us that we are not allowed to organize with, court, or sympathize with Right Wingers* because they're all nazis the wrong kind of nazis.

  • Right Wingers happens to include all Independents, third party voters, RFK Jr. supporters, Marianne Williamson supporters, Bernie Bros, Anti-Vaxxers, Anti-War Tankies, and anybody who listens to any of Joe Rogan, Russell Brand, or Jimmy Dore.

Also, asking for a floor vote during a supermajority would be violence.

When we say America, do we mean the global mafia empire that has to helicopter over the rest of the world kicking everyone else's sandcastles over to protect the oligarchy's racket, or the 330 million people here? The former is going to devour everyone and everything, and salt the earth out of spite for alternatives, and it will do this until and unless it is stopped. The latter have largely been bred and raised into a sick, confused, propagandized culture but have the potential for good if the feds would stop screwing with them.

What will it take to convince Americans to turn their backs on empire and war before it’s too late? When will we conclude that Christ wasn’t joking when He blessed the peacemakers rather than the warmongers?

I wonder what the author expects this to look like. Many Americans are already weary of war while the state operates rogue, and a growing number of Americans fear it's already too late (perhaps William too, judging from the article itself).

Depends on how you want to define "real". Ice caps are melting and we should probably be mindful of what kind of impact that will have. There are also a number of environmental issues to pay attention to outside of that one.

A bunch of megalomaniacal oligarchs cosplaying as leftists are not the solution, however.

First Comey did not cost Hillary any election.

It was a devil's advocate pitch. Sure, the most vocal of liberals wouldn't be so principled.

First, do you know whether they have or not, and how would you be able to tell?

It's not a topic constituents on social media have been vocal about.

For a time the Dems needed to pay lip service to it and occasionally still do-- and yes, I'd dare say they needed to because it's not something they were interested in passing. While Biden promised to veto it in the general, in that Dem primary a healthcare plan became the centerpiece topic the candidates all had to maneuver around. Trump's supporters have gotten a couple of people elected, I could see them pressuring for retaliation for how they were treated on 1/6.

Plus, widespread animosity towards the feds is also a net gain-- a prominent platform position to take a take a stance on and hopefully more wariness and less cooperation with the establishment's Praetorian Guard.

Have conservatives and libertarians made M4A a major topic? It polls well but doesn't seem high on their agendas. The left has every reason to want to axe the FBI, Trump supporters recently discovered why the left dislikes the FBI, and if liberals had a lick of honesty or consistency they would hop on board for abolishing them over 1) James Comey allegedly costing Hillary the election and 2) not preventing their dreaded 1/6 "insurrection."

Would love to see bipartisan support for abolishing the FBI to become a focal topic among voters. The right finally sees what the left has seen in the FBI all along, and now the FBI has further demonstrated again and again that they aren't merely carrying out one administration or another's agenda, they are very interested in enforcing their own vision.

Personal accounts I read long ago about these stings indicate that once the FBI is invested in a target they get aggressive and relentless about trying to coerce them into doing the illegal thing they're trying to goad, as if once they've come that far they aren't going to settle for them turning out to be harmless.

New Law Will Install Kill Switches In All New Cars by Orochi in WayOfTheBern

[–]Orochi[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

According to an article written by former U.S. Representative Bob Barr, hidden away in the recently passed infrastructure bill, the very one I warned before would negatively impact drivers across the country if it were to pass, is a measure to install vehicle kill switches into every new car, truck, and SUV sold in this country. The regulation likely won’t be enforced for five years, so maybe there’s time to do something about this.

As we’ve seen both in this country and others recently, what constitutes “law-abiding” can change drastically overnight. For example, in September a car was pulled over in New Zealand and the occupants arrested when police discovered the trunk was full of Kentucky Fried Chicken meals. They were smuggling the fast food to customers in locked-down Auckland, against quarantine measures. Yet not too long before, delivering restaurant orders to people was considered a reputable, legal activity.

also

But wait, there’s more. This kill switch “safety” system would be open, or in other words there would be a backdoor. That would allow police or other government authorities to access it whenever. Would they need a warrant to do that? Likely not. Even better, hackers could access the backdoor and shut down your vehicle.

What could possibly go wrong????

How The Lincoln Project Set Liberals’ Money On Fire by Orochi in WayOfTheBern

[–]Orochi[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A group of longtime Republican operatives depicting themselves as anti-Trump stalwarts convinced liberals to give them more money for ineffective television ads and stunts than was raised by the Democratic Party’s national campaign to win state legislatures.

The result: Donald Trump won more Republican votes than he did in 2016 as Democrats again lost state legislatures in advance of redistricting that could determine control of Congress for the next decade.

Meanwhile, the GOP operatives are reportedly positioned to go from lighting liberals’ money on fire during the 2020 election to now using liberals’ money to launch a media empire that could push a new Biden administration to the right.
