If you're having stomach problems get tested for h pylori. Seriously. People used to suffer for decades with ulcers. Now, if it turns out you've got h pylori issues - you take rounds of antibiotics and for a brief period you use prilosec. And it's gone. Amazing.

That was really an interesting read. The researcher ultimately figured out that a somewhat mundane concern drove their decision to take the route they took.
Some toy manufacturer should create a transgender transformer. by Tom_Bombadil in C_S_T

Could be a boring toy.
To be transgender, a man only has to say "I'm a woman", and voila! -- he's a woman. No sex change necessary. No medical treatment needed. Suddenly a free pass to walk into battered women's shelters or women's changing rooms at the gym. Hey, let's let that rapist put in for a transfer to the women's prison because now he says he's a woman. Because...rights!
I'm looking forward to the Olympics. I can't wait to see people's reactions as they watch men winning many of the women's medals. Then they can enjoy it even more when their daughter excels in high school track and field but loses a college scholarship to a boy who competes as a girl. Fun times.

Yeah, it's kind of funny when I listen to people who have pensions talking about how they need to work another 5 years in order to get...blah, blah, blah. And they're sitting on houses that they own outright. And they've got 401k plans, and other investments.
They've got it made and really don't realize it.
Its also funny listening to corporate media mouthpieces yapping on and on about how you have to put away such and such an amount of money if you're whatever age in order to have enough money to retire.
And most (not just half, who are we kidding), have less than nothing to retire on. Death is my retirement plan.
And most of us don't have "extra" money to put aside. Recently, when reviewing my budget, I was considering not having a phone at all. At this point, I'm just struggling to keep it together week to week. And I probably don't even realize how good I have it compared to plenty of other people.
N.J. gave 500 undocumented immigrants tuition money. Here’s where they are going to college. by dcjogger in news
This is another example of why people don't open their arms wide to illegal immigrants. Times are hard. People are struggling. Our governments (both state and local) tax us more and more as we get less and less in exchange. This N.J. tuition giveaway is a drop in the bucket compared to the tax dollars spent on our non-stop wars. It's nothing compared to the tax breaks given to multi-national corporations that move jobs out of the U.S. But this N.J. tax giveaway is so stark, it is such a slap in the face to average citizens, that I really have to wonder why it happens?
Maybe its a relatively "cheap" distraction. We get righteously (and rightfully) indignant about it. And while we think about this, we don't think about the non-stop wars and the subsidized multinational corporations, or any of the other ways that these monsters (on both the right and the left) steal from us every day.
Parallel construction - an bent law enforcement process building separate evidentiary basis concealing how criminal investigations actually begin. Unconditional Basic Income as the Social Vaccine of the 21st Century: It’s less costly to avoid problems from ever happening, than it is to fix problems once they do. It also happens to be the entire logic behind the vaccine, and its my belief that unconditional basic income has the same potential. by Orangutan in WorldNews

So now it's not Universal Basic Income, now the marketing is Unconditional Basic Income. OK, well there's no way it will be unconditional. If the government is distributing it, there will be conditions. And that means the government will wield its power.
If UBI is electronic direct deposit, then they can easily punish any dissent by switching it off. You said it yourself in the title of your post "It's less costly to avoid problems from ever happening, than it is to fix problems once they do." Here, "problems" could easily translate to revolution. Just pay off the masses with UBI, and silence dissenters by turning off the spigot. Sounds great.
