How many different people you vote for, divided by total number of votes, compared against the site's average

Similar stuff have been tried, the way to circumvent it is to set an array of "related" subs (or manually select random posts) and have two out of three votes be driveby votes on random posts to fuzzy the "upvote diversity".

Its a tough challenge I still haven't seen a good solution to.

That's because the proper response is to ignore it.

That's a unfriendly way to look at user feedback. I'm talking about you ignoring my request for a standard on how to treat unwanted material.

Unless you're saying my feedbacks are unwanted material or course.

Why do you care what someone thinks about how you vote with a username that's anonymous?

I found out who an mod on reddit was by following his username. He thought he'd separated his online account and everything but forgot he'd used his username at a forum elsewhere.

From that forum I was able to piece together who his real life friend was, and from his Facebook it wasn't hard to find the name of said mod. Within minutes I knew where he worked, where he lived, what the name of his spouse and kid were and when Facebook started suggesting the kids kindergarten I felt the excersize had run its course.

By showing to everyone who's voting for who you open up the system for profiling and networking connections. There are some benefits to the users, but I argue the risk far outweighs the reward.

I care because I know there are many groups that want to silence or harm me and others because of who we support and our worldview. Or maybe more correct would be that there's always someone who wants to silence anyone...

If they want to skewer you, they'll just go through your comments like they do on reddit.

Yes. That's one way of breaking down a discussing to the bottom level of the debate pyramid. I don't think it's wise with one more.

By removing the ability to see what we support, they have to debate our statements instead of reacting to what topics we want to cheer on by upvoting, and their personal beliefs on why we upvoted.

Having the usernames out lets us easily see networks of usernames who only upvote each other and don't participate in the larger community, aka users that are likely astroturfing

Unless you give us users a way to deal with this, I don't see what good it does. No downvote? We have to compete with uovotes. Not enough post I actually want to upvote but there's actual racist and discriminatory post on the frontpage?

Upvote the most popular ones.

This is a straight lane to a solidified saidit culture based on a common hate for spam rather than a shared love of the posted topic.

As one who dislikes the chat, I don't see the problem. 😂

But on a serious note, I think the chat serves a different function than the forum. We use the comment field to comment posts, what is the sub-specific chat for, discussing the comments?

And I consider it a privacy issue that someone could potentially be hovering in the chat (without logging in no less), register when users log in to a channel, substract the timeout and end up with an accurate list of what sub's the logged in users spend their time on.

[–]OldManCorley 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If votes are reserved for "above average", we first need a baseline for what's average. And without the ability to discern "good" or suitable posts from "bad" or unsuitable posts that's impossible (no downvote, no insight/funny for average posts).

I'd say votes should be used to discern whether it falls into the different categories for the user, and used generously as it encouragement for posters. The user get more content they like by subscribing to subs that has a culture for posts the user find insightful or funny.

Water it all down and let the users make their own lemonade.

you and I and most people with an ideal environment could learn geometry and trig well enough to teach it at a college or high school or something. A working level math education

In comparison to ground breaking, paradigm shifting high level math, that isn't comparable.

If Einstein is considered extraordinary, could anyone become extraordinary under ideal conditions?

I imagine that the vast majority had lots of factors stacked against them and chaos in their lives rather than they studied adequately and still failed to grasp the material and get in.

If we're looking at causes outside scholarly performance, it's easy to argue that a family might not make as good decisions for their child as a higher intelligence family, resulting in more challenges for their kids.

I guess my argument is that it's not a complex matter.

Sometimes it's just about having the experience and things look complicated from the outside.

In my experience, what someone think is easy, others think it's hard. When you say some things are complex and others aren't, it's that compared to the average Joe or compared to your comprehension skills?

Then we disagree. I believe that certain types of intellectual challenges aren't solvable without certain intellectual qualities.

And since I don't believe people choose to be a gas station attendee over being a doctor or other higher paid and higher status jobs, I believe it to be their ability to solve the required challenges that's holding them back more than a satisfaction regarding their situation.

Do you understand math at the same level of Einstein? You can't argue that he was unique as several physicists were working on the same principles and the science community are pretty sure that if it weren't Einstein, then someone else would have come up with the theory of relativity, eventually.

If you say yes, then I'd argue you have a better mind for math then I do because I don't. If you say no but you can learn, you have a better mind for math than than me, because I've tried and failed. If you say no, you agree that there's other people with better minds for math than you.

How does that fit in with the idea that having a grasp on complex matters is just a matter of learning a trade craft?

What about the people flunking trade craft educations? And so on.

  1. That's not a counterargument.

  2. Even if it were, I'm not from the US so it's not a valid counterargument to my statement.

Unemployment figures are currently low, so that cannot be a significant issue.

Does those figures include those who aren't registered?

What adverse effect is the result of the illegal immigrant population? Where are the existing problems?

If you see no negative sides to illegal immigration, does that include human trafficking and exploitation of illegal immigrants as a particularly vulnerable group for both physical labour and sex work through economical slavery?

I think the standard model is the best, there's a set of standard subs that new members are subscribed to and no auto subscribe. This encourage the culture of subs the admins promote through a curated "default" set.

Or perhaps make it an event, each month the admins add a promising sub to the default list etc.

In the beginning the explanation for auto subscribe was to encourage niche subs AFAIK, but that feature is maintained by hot and new /all.

Opt in auto sub. 👍

Sphinxes are interesting.

The Great Sphinx of Giza always seemed a bit disproportionate.

But the proportions of this temple sphinx makes it seem like an original piece.

For context, the Great Sphinx is estimated to've been built 2500 years before this piece - Plenty of time for a "redesigned" Great Sphinx to have seeped into the culture with it's human head. So the theory of a redesigned Great Sphinx of Giza is still up for consideration.

Just a thought.

Before anyone get pasts the gate with me as a serious researcher he or she will need to give a rundown on the Martian Fox

I don't see how that in any way have anything to do with what we're discussing, and it's a logical fallacy and a ridiculous requirement that I (or Dolan, if that's who you're aiming at) explain something unrelated to prove the legitimacy of our current arguments.

Further, you're the one coming with contradictory claims compared to scientific consensus and thus the burden of proof is on you - How does your point of view explain what looks like an earthly fox can exist in a mostly carbon dioxic enviroment? How did it get there? When did it get there? Why haven't it evolved and adapted to a Martian climate?

If you're putting anyone asking you for proofs for your claims in the "dog file" (I assume that's negative), you're barring yourself from participating in the sort of discussions that impact rational minds.

Then question them by presenting contradicting arguments or even refuting evidence. Even if you can't convince them, you still've made an effort to combat what you consider ignorance and the arguments and evidence is available to anybody who is on the fence.

This is the most cynical post yet ..

How about you lift your perspective two levels and see that the mainstream news are now openly talking about space missions where we basically expect to find life?

Have you not noticed a major shift in the narrative the last 10 years? Where do you think this buildup will lead? Partial disclosure perhaps?

Have you ever read or watched anything by Richard Dolan? He is very good at explaining why the secrecy and how those who oppose it work.

Could you please elaborate on what measures saidit will take against users who continue to post "wrong" stuff?

I'm a believer in a UFO cover up theory, but from what I've seen from your reply to a conspiracy survey on the site - you don't share my view.

If I were to post things that counterargues one of your beliefs by its existence, what would happen? Or is it just select topics we're not allowed to argue for or against?

Could you make some sort of public rules, because right now I'm seeing the main admin, from a position halfway down the pyramid of debate, by using guilt by association and "abusing" quotation marks is using the power of position to caution someone who steps out of line from the accepted narrative...

I'm positive I'm misunderstanding your intentions because this is very far from how the site has been presented and that's why I'm asking you to clarify. 👍

I find that the article writer justifies human behaviour in a self conflicting way. On the one hand, humans can do nothing wrong in whatever they do because we're just animals. On the other hand he dismisses voluntary human extinction because then there would be no animals left who understands the value of the sacrifice because humans are special.

We're approaching critical reader mass where people assume that whatever the truth is, it's simply not what the establishment says.

Nothing odd about the JFK case. Nothing odd about 911. Nothing odd about the pedocracy.

"Objective truth" is a loaded term.

Yes, and when someone say that a statement is is wrong without presenting any contrary evidence in a authoritarian manner, I can only interpret it as either objectively true and self-evident or as a part of a narrative control. If it's the former, I want to know what I've missed out on and how to observe objective truth, if it's the latter I want to know what the site owner is willing to do to enforce the control.

My opinion is my own. [...] magnora7 is another story. This is his site, run with d3rr. Presently they are the arbiters of what goes. [...] I don't know where or how they might want to draw lines when it comes to things, ignorant or not, well meaning or otherwise, like racism, SJWs, dis/misinformation, fake news, infiltration, etc.

Indeed, and that's why I asked magnora7 about how he would handle people who doesn't respond to his commands.

Trust but verify. Don't believe anything I say. Look it up for yourself. Triangulate your own truths and be open to new perspectives to improve your focus on the matters.

"You're basically asking me to judge a whole group on the basis of your anecdotes, and I'm no more willing to do that than I'm willing to judge the Jews on the anecdotes of right wing nationalists."

I'm not asking you to judge a whole group, "the Jews", based on all the good Jews I know. I'm saying don't assume all Jews are bad because the one's at the top are

Then why would you bring up your good jewish friends as an argument to how to judge jews as a group, i.e. Jews as a group is not responsible for certain conspiracy theories, it's the Zionists?

It's OK to have differing opinions, and I'm not here to advocate that the Jews are the reason for anything.

What I'm here to do is ask what happens if people don't accept your or magnora7 judgement of what is objectively true.

You're basically asking me to judge a whole group on the basis of your anecdotes, and I'm no more willing to do that than I'm willing to judge the Jews on the anecdotes of right wing nationalists.

Interesting. Is that your opinion or are you stating objective facts? What will you do if the user or other users doesn't adhere to your command and continue to post about "ze Jews"?

All this twitter drama... All I care about is what decentralised, federated open source alternative they're moving to. It's not a matter of visibility any more, anyone interested in what WikiLeaks has to say has the tools available to find their new outlet.
