Social contagion, or just general cult that likes to convert people. I try to keep friendly and cordial with people regardless and I've had a couple of heart to heart talks with some trans people and they have become fully convinced that I must be trans as well because of basically universal experiences. Like you've ever felt awkward or like you didn't fit in? Well it's because you are trans! Accept yourself brother.

Because you know, people who aren't trans definitely don't struggle with puberty and awkwardness ever.

It becomes their gospel, the way to end suffering is to accept your true trans self and be your real self or something.

I liked that argument. I'd just say, cool I'm a woman now. #believeallwomen.

Postulate 1. "Believe all women." Women don't lie and everything they say is always true.

Postulate 2. "Anyone who identifies as a woman is a woman".

I am a woman because I identify as a woman, that means everything I say must be believed as true. I say everything you say is wrong. And you must believe me if you accept the two postulates as true (which of course they must be since I said I was a woman, and everything a woman says is true).

By this point most people would accuse me of either not being a woman (on account of my penis, can you believe how bigoted they are) or would get angry and argue I was stupid (but I'm not stupid, since I just said I wasn't) or I was trolling but that can't be true since I said I wasn't trolling, or they would just walk away and refuse to talk to me, which is clearly anti-woman discrimination, again because I said so, and I must be believed.

What does she care anyway?

Because she's fat. Knows that being fat is less attractive and less desirable, and doesn't accept that part of herself and so instead of directing the anger at that situation in a healthy direction like motivation for diet and exercise, prefers to attack anything that reminds her that she is fat. Miserable and wants to make everyone else miserable too. She's jealous of the people who do buy these products and look that way. She is fatphobic of herself.

Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that wind turbines off the coast of the US "are causing whales to die in numbers never seen before" by Brewdabier in news

Whales live in the ocean. If you build the wind farms in the ocean, isn't too much of a stretch to think it might fuck with the whales a bit.

I think a lot of the anti-wind hysteria is simply hyperbole but the whole wind industry is also based on hyperbole surrounding clean energy and fears of climate impact anyway.

Way I see it is the windmill themselves aren't so bad for the environment but they are so fucking inefficient and you have to build so damn many of them that overall the environmental impact of building and maintaining them likely exceeds the total impact of developing nuclear power.

They're building these out in rural areas and deserts and mountains and the like but they gotta build the access routes out to them and get the materials there as well. Single windmill that impact is minimal. For hundreds or thousands of them that is not so minimal.

The hardline Christian conservative side of the Republicans was pretty much the only faction that is overtly anti-gay but while they are a strongly zealous and important financial backing of the party they are a minority and don't align with the majority opinion a lot of the time even within the party and they are a lot less relevant since 2016.

I don't think anything has really flipped so much as public opinion as shifted towards being less hostile towards certain types of gay people as a whole. It's important to remember that even Obama was against gay marriage when he was first elected. At least publicly. Privately I think politicians just care about whatever nets them more votes anyway.

I think it's more a generational shift than anything. I think older people who grew up in a world where gay people were all "in the closet" and likely didn't even encounter the concept until adult hood and then likely in a very negative fashion since the only way you'd know if someone was gay in the 1950's is if they got caught doing something they shouldn't be doing. Colored their opinions. I just think the left progressive movement just kept progressing after the victories were won thoughtlessly and more and more of their base saw the Republicans as reasonable on the issue.

I've said for awhile I see it as an issue with activists in general is they are only interested in the emotional victories of ending oppression rather than focusing on singular issues. Gay men specifically went into the "oppressor" category once gay marriage was decided and they moved onto increasingly obscure issues "Non-binary Bisexual Pronoun awareness".

Also worth noting that LGBTQ whatever is not really an organic grouping and most in those categories are not very "PC" either as activists were quick to point out once public acceptance of gays started and they moved onto the plight of bisexuals being discriminated against in gay circles for not being gay enough, to which the average person gay or otherwise responds with "who cares".

Like imagine a bisexual man in a relationship with a woman not being accepted as being gay. The audacity of it. Shit like that started pushing the gays to the Republicans more and more.

It's far easier to get people to agree on things like "gay people shouldn't be fired if someone at work finds out they are gay offhand". Even the hardline religious right that is overtly anti-gay marriage will largely agree that when it comes to employment that firing someone simply because they are gay and for no other reason is a bad thing.

The fact that they are so angry about it proves you've hit a nerve with the accusation.

I think they are in denial about it. But a whole lot of the online space for these people basically exists to have them reinforce each other's belief that it's not just a fetish.

I think it's basically driven by porn addiction. Eventually they build up a tolerance to the "high" I suppose and have to seek out new ways of getting it and I think the humiliation fetish side just kind of pushes them into publicly identifying as trans to get that same feeling but most can't square the identity crisis that comes when they have to reconcile the dissonance of realizing they have a weird fetish that makes most people uncomfortable with the general ego most people have of not thinking of themselves as weird. It either manifests as anger you see online against anyone who points out the issue and breaks the illusion, or they go and embrace the fetish totally as I've seen a few aquaintances do posting porn to Facebook and such with no shame whatsoever.

Right wing media is currently blasting her as a diversity hire so they likely feel it is justified to "counter hate" or some such.

I'm not privy to the specifics here but it seems like if they've run out of water they certainly haven't prepared enough, California has so many of these wildfires it definitely makes me question their competency, but then again this is the state that can't manage to build a train either.

I doubt it's this woman's fault specifically but she's probably a symptom of underlying issues with California being just totally dysfunctional. Being a woman or a lesbian has nothing to do with being an effective fire chief or not so it gives a lot of weight to the argument against affirmative action programs if it turns out that she has made some mistakes in handling it, again even if it's not something that a white man in the same position probably also would have done.

Personally I don't think most of these affirmative action hires are necessarily incompetent, I think most are qualified for the positions they hold and try to do a good job but the very fact that affirmative action exists does mean that that cloud hangs over their accomplishment, or lack thereof.

I do find the media obsession with calling out the "first lesbian" or whatever identity to fill the position to be a bit infantalizing personally. Especially these days where I don't think anyone really cares. Why does your sexuality have any bearing on this job? I can respect women firefighters a bit more than men for overcoming their physical limitations to do the job well but I don't think who they fuck is important at all.

Sure but big difference between those.

If you're a recovered alcoholic you probably are an idiot for working at a bar, but if you do so and lapse again, you are basically hurting yourself. There's a risk of you hurting others with DUI and the like but that risk was always there. Access to alcohol isn't exactly restricted or difficult.

If you're a recovered pedophile and you lapse, you ruin a kids life. It causes harm to a child. Very different than an alcoholic.

Pedophiles also seek out positions that give them access to children. You don't need to be a bartender to get a drink.

Basically it's all academic anyway if the pedophile hasn't offended yet. We can't read minds or go minority report on them. Someone who thinks they might be an alcoholic is also stupid for putting themselves in a risky position but as I said the risk of harm to society is quite different.

At any rate once someone says they are a pedophile I think you need to remove their access from children. Someone who merely says they are a pedophile hasn't yet committed a crime but it's grossly irresponsible to allow them continued access. As acceptance is the first step towards embrancement of an identity. Why would a pedophile publicly announce themselves as one? They are testing the waters.

[–]Nonbinaryandroid 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's schrodingers pedophile. If a pedophile never acts on or verbalized their pedophilia to anyone, are they a pedophile? I would say no because if yes its literally thought crime. There's no difference between this hypothetical pedophile and a non-pedophile from any objective metric.

Of course once someone indicated they are a pedophile in any way they should not be allowed near children.

I think the other issue here though is that with the strong emotions surrounding pedophiles it can be used as a propaganda tool to overwhelm logic with emotion and be used as a weapon against political enemies. Since unless you actually catch someone in the act it can be very difficult to prove and any lesser evidence say for example possession of pornographic material can't be released for public analysis by the very nature of the material.

Essentially it seems quite easy for me for someone to plant evidence or make the accusation maliciously leaving the target in a position where they are essentially either forced to resign or be defamed regardless of legal outcome. You can't for example check the veracity of possession claims independently without becoming guilty of the same crime yourself.

Probably the whole package.

Americans get weird when it comes to sex. Puritanical attitudes towards the topic have a lot of people get up in arms even if you mention things like animals mating during a nature documentary on the one hand, on the other hand you have the everything goes type people who think anyone even suggesting something like "maybe you shouldn't have casual sex with strangers in the park bathroom" is somehow a human rights violation.

Most people aren't so extreme but the extremes dieect the conversation, or lack thereof.

I personally think the puritanical attitudes lead to the kind of strong acceptance of the trans ideology myself. If you don't have a strong idea of biological sex in terms of reproduction, i think it's easier for people to think it's all just vibes and whatever.

Transception

Trans rights aren't a thing by xoenix in TumblrInAction

[–]Nonbinaryandroid 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think that the problem with arguments about "rights" is we aren't specific about what "rights" actually mean.

I'm all for trans rights if that means trans people have the same rights as anyone else under the law. But that's hardly controversial. Even the most staunch "transphobic" types will agree that trans people have the same rights to vote, own property, have access to public services, etc, as any person that isn't trans.

But what specifically are talked about with "trans rights"? The right to not feel uncomfortable? I don't think anyone has that. The right to have other people refer to you a specific way? Again I don't think anyone has that right.

I always try to bring these discussions down to specific things. That's usually where it falls apart.

One right that gets mentioned is the "right to bodily automony" which I don't think exists. I think you have a right to make decisions regarding your own medical care but it's not unlimited or universal. I use suicide as an example. You are morally justified in stopping someone from killing themselves. So while the person may have the right to engage in behavior or medical procedures that expose them to a high degree of risk. They don't actually have the right to do "anything" they want.

The other issue is rights aren't a, I guess the term is materialistic thing. They don't really "exist" in the natural world. Might makes right. Debating whether or not a murder victim had their human rights infringed is rather pointless as the victim is dead and such rights did not at any point prevent the murder from happening.

Likewise we can say that people have the right to reproduce but trans people are effectively denied that "right" defacto as a consequence of biology should they pursue their "right" to their gender identity. Could we then argue that trans people are the biggest threat to their own rights?

I think some were and some weren't. But if you look at the history of the movements you can see some particularly crazy types latching onto both.

I also think you need to consider the idea of "prestige" is very much self determined. At least in terms of what the activist thinks about themselves. While they may be maligned by large numbers of people if they are in a bubble that convinces themselves they are doing good they get their affirmation from the in group. Likewise it's common in cults to say "the people hate you because you tell the truth" so negative feedback can actually be the motivating factor for these types. Westbroro Baptist church is a great example of that.

I think the key is that you can have an objective metric to determine if bariatric surgery is necessary. Whether or not they are "too fat" can essentially be boiled down to a number. Exact number will be up for debate but let's say, we allow the surgery for people over 500kg just to throw out a wild example.

Someone over 500kg gets approved for the surgery, someone under does not, their motivations for the surgery are not relevant. They can identify as skinny, that can think it's the path to nirvana, doesn't matter what they think, 500kg is an objective metric which can be set and we can say it's unhealthy and over that weight surgery is justified, regardless of motivation, since it's the health impact we are concerned about. Not their mentality.

Puberty blockers are the same thing. If puberty starts before a certain age, they may be justified. That age can be set as an objective metric. Start of puberty can be defined as an objective metric based on hormonal levels, or any other number of possible metrics.

Identity on the other hand can't be tested for. It's entirely subjective. There's no clinical test that can objectively determine whether or not someone is transgender. If there was a test, like a blood test, you could take to determine that, we'd be able to determine and identify transgender identity without asking the patient at all. And we'd have a different conversation.

Basically I think in previous generations those who would have been suffragetes or prohibitionists in their times are latching onto this generation's zeitgeist of social justice movements.

The anti-science bend is part and parcel with it I think. The extreme prohibitionists had pamphlets in elementary schools teaching kids that if they drank liquor they would spontaneously combust and die.

There's so much of this sort of porn online it should be obvious to people what is happening here but I think there's some generational gaps and taboos that prevent the open discussion.

It's been around for a couple of decades online at least, ever since the internet was a thing. But you couldn't exactly say to people "Oh yeah there's tons of this sex change type porn online and that's probably a driving factor in why people are exposed to and interested in the idea of changing their sex" because one it opens the question of why are you looking at it, and you'll be condemned for even knowing about it.

Basically the only people who know about it are either the TRA and people actively seeking it out with few exceptions. Normies are blissfully unaware of it and naturally doubt the veracity of these claims, there's no good studies on it and you can't in good ethics conduct a study on the effects of porn usage on the developing mind without being an accessory to child abuse. And I think the TRA are quick to condemn anyone not on their side who finds this as a protection mechanism. And normies go along with it because the idea is so far out there they don't believe it and they are unwilling to do their own research for obvious reasons.

It's very much a tree of knowledge situation. You have to know evil and good to understand the issue. But simply knowing about evil in some way corrupts you. Most people don't seek that knowledge. It's not worth the price.

I think it's a lot more normal than people think for kids to have a , let's say a "questioning" period about their gender during puberty as they grow and become aware of the opposite sex, but they don't talk about it because it's taboo and they get bullied. Until recently they'd grow out of it and be normal but the internet essentially allows them to carve out a social group of other "like minded individuals" and frees them from normal social dynamics which leads to more extreme expressions of what would in pre internet years be perhaps a passing thought such as "how would my life be different as the opposite sex" which is innocuous in and of itself but if fed with porn and validations that your life would be totally better and in fact you can have that life, it leads to unhealthy fixations.

I think it is essentially a form of escapism. Kids who are unhappy about some element of their life for whatever reason will latch onto something that allows them to imagine a future where they are happy, the problem with the trans stuff specifically is it is impossible to actually achieve and like all things if you don't actually adress the true root causes of your unhappiness then you will continue to be unhappy.

For example if you do indeed hate your body, that is an ingrained psychological reaction, changing your body won't change that. You'll transition and still hate your body. Self acceptance as you are is a lot more important.

I doubt they'd be very useful as slaves when they are totally uneducated compared to the cheap foreign workers the Saudis bring in from the Philippines and other places who are "not slaves" but aren't exactly free to quit either.

You still have to provide slaves with food and housing afterall. It's far easier and cheaper to just underpay someone for labor than actually keep a slave imho.

I think this is basically the conservative Islamic attitudes and strict religious laws running into reality and people not wanting to deal with it for that reason. If you're living in a culture where women are at fault for getting raped as is often the attitude in certain Islamic areas, even if you think it's cruel you might not want to help because you can be blamed for helping a prostitute and get in trouble yourself.

I think it's common in very conservative areas to just not consider edge cases. The liberal extreme is focused too much on edge cases over the norm. But in this case I think it's simply most people thinking "women should not have children outside of marriage" which while I agree with that basic sentiment, the answer headliners will give when you have a situation like this is "well she should not have had that kid outside of wedlock" which isn't a helpful attitude to fixing the actual problem which isn't the women's promiscuity or not but the stateless status of the child and the future potential for criminality that stems from it.

Yes you'd think the Saudis wouldn't want a bunch of uneducated statelss children running around. But that's what happens when you take religious law as supreme over more practical concerns. Without a concept of charity.

Unless it's a tree hugging church trying to marry the tree and trying to mount the reindeer from behind it doesn't matter.

There's no Bible verse that says "thou shalt not put up a christmas tree".

Far more concerning are the various churches with bookstores inside them, we all know Jesus's actions towards commerce inside the house of worship.

I don't think the Christian influence makes that much difference compared to other countries in east Asia. I think that for whatever reason the Koreas just tend to be more "extreme" in whatever ideologies or endeavors they adopt including homosexuality. I do think that east Asia in general tends to lack the same kind of puritanical outrage culture you see in the west, specifically America, towards media so they are less likely to care about gay characters or other mild sexual content in media.

I think in general the basic "traditional" east Asian attitudes towards this sort of thing is that cross dressing and being gay are basically seen as the same thing, and it's viewed as a kind of childish phase that people are expected to grow out of and do their familial duty later in life by having a spouse and kids, rather than a grave mortal sin which condems you to hellfire.

So outside the communist countries where sexuality of any sort that doesn't accomplish the states goals is suppressed (meaning we need more workers so have more babies, as homosexuality is less tolerated in China recently as they face demographic consequences of their one child policy), I think that most westerners will find east Asian attitudes on these to be more, shall we say tolerant, than is expected from the more right wing elements of western societies, but lacking much of the overtly pro acceptance elements we've seen in the west recently.

They do tend to adopt the American corporate DEI type trappings from time to time but these lack any real connection to the grassroots LGBTQ movements that do exist in Asia at the moment so are basically viewed as foreign influence by most, or are simply accepted by "NPC" not so much different than the west. About where they were in the 90's or early 2000's imho.

The only country in East Asia that legalized gay marriage was Taiwan and I think that is done more to differentiate themselves from the mainland approach towards it which is currently to suppressed LGBTQ and encourage young people to procreate.

Gay or trans characters in media have been around for ages in Asia and really aren't significant in any way towards the larger political movement. The free speech parts lacking the same sort of western resistance towards such that once existed, and the general trend of artsy types being more likely to be gay I think resulted in gay and trans characters being much more common in east Asian media than the west.

Which is partly why I think the online trans movement is so anime adjacent.

Pretty dumb. I'm into a bunch of what would be considered "stereotypically gay shit" ballet, opera, musical theater, etc.

Why go with the girly shit? Because the girls enjoy it? And I enjoy the girls? And they enjoy that I'm one of the few guys doing this thing with lots of girls around. It always seemed pretty straight to me.

You're interested in girls and what girls do? Oh shit must be trans! Of course! What heterosexual male wouldn't want to spend all their time playing football tackling other heterosexual males, vs joining a cooking class with all the girls. Obviously wanting to spend time with the girls, means you're a girl. Duh! Everyone knows the heterosexual males only want to spend time with other heterosexual males.

You can't have your online bubble invaded by opinions you don't like or don't want to hear.

It's kinda silly when the block button exists. You can just ignore this person but instead you choose not to.

At any rate it's pretty common, outside of overtly free speech spaces (and with that the spam and trolling that naturally comes with it) you won't find truly free speech on any moderated forum. While I'm of the opinion we let people say whatever and just ignore the bad actors in any group, most people want them removed and that ultimately leads to subjective decisions that must be made about what is and isn't allowed.

I think most people aren't morally prepared to argue against truly horrific proposals and they want to hide them out of fear. For example if you want to have any sort of free discussion about say, genocide, you're going to have to allow for pro-genocide positions to be discussed, and it is very easy for bad face actors, or trolls, to construct very evil but logically sound pro-genocide arguments that are difficult to argue against without blatant emotionalsm. And I think it scares normal people not used to academic debate to listen to arguments that make sense to them at some level that leads them to truly evil conclusions. So their response is to silence the discussion.

The most emotional voices tend to be the loudest anyway and once people latch onto certain ideas as either being patently good or evil without any semblance of nuance, the discussion is basically over. I can't argue pro-genocide since I think that wiping people out is an overtly evil and uncomprisable position. But if you just shut down the discussion entirely you can't discuss the cultural and economic reasons why genocide happens and why genocidal regimes come about.

My general rule here is not to give unsolicited opinions. If they ask me about it I'll tell them what I think though. Rarely causes problems. People don't ask me unless they actually want an opinion that will go against the grain. Doesn't go to HR.

If it did I'd just flip the script. Yeah if I go around telling everyone "You can't actually change your gender" unprompted, that's harassment.

But if you come to me and ask for my opinion, and it's given, and you don't like it and go to HR over it, well that's you harassing me, and I will fight it, and win.

Yeah I agree. The idea that you have to get surgery and hormones because you don't feel like acting feminine is ridiculous. I can sympathize with the feeling that you are growing up and society is encouraging you to be something that you are not, but I think a lot of it comes into a simply fear of growing up, fear of change, and fear of leaving ones comfort zone. You might have friends and family who aren't at all supportive of your, shall we say butch tendencies, and I think they should be more tolerant of that but regardless I don't believe the solution is "I'm actually a man." More than just finding friends and people who don't care how you dress. Which frankly I think is most sincere people.

Like maybe I'm not personally interested in someone who chooses a certain lifestyle or appearance but there's people out there who are. I think most of this pressure on women to dress and present a certain way is coming from other women imho.

Not sure it's self awareness. My experience is a lot of people coming out of the Universites are for lack of a better word overly self aware to the point of anxiety. Which I think is a consequence of the kind of high pressure academic culture coupled with cancel culture being used as a tool to identify and get rid of academic rivals when convenient.

I think I would describe it as more a case of "worldview" shock that comes from people heavily in academic circles their whole life without enough "working class" or whatever you want to call "real life experience" to balance out the more ideological failings of academic thought.

Life shock? Adult shock? It's a form of culture shock really. Actually happens a lot to students when they move abroad outside an academic circle for the first time and they misidentify it for actual culture shock. Basically they are taught the world works a certain way by people who are totally in the system their whole lives, then when things don't work out according to script they have a crisis.

I disagree. He's not addressing the problem or drawing awareness to it. Americans are already very aware of how bad the insurance industry is as their reactions to this murder betray, but the only thing that this act drew any attention to is the manhunt. When all is over it won't accomplish any positive changes. About the only things I see coming from it are some token stricter regulations on 3d printers and probably more corporate spending on security (which ultimately will be a cost passed down to the end user).

I think it's a shame because despite this guy being a bit of an idiot it seems he is willing to actually go out and do something which makes him better than most lazy internet users who are all talk. The problem is he decides to do the one thing that doesn't accomplish anything of value and removes his freedom to make any meaningful contributions to the cause in the future.

As I said CEO are easily replaceable. Worst case scenario you make him a martyr, best case you just increase the operating security cost of CEO going forward. Nothing positive is gained. This is coming from the guy who thinks fleshlights from the Japanese equivalent of Walmart are responsible for the Japanese population crisis after he wandered into the adults only section on vacation. I'd say at best we're looking at a sheltered intellectual type suffering from institutional brainrot and a lack of "real world experience" rather than the typical school shooter social outcast projecting their rage at something closer and more familiar, but regardless I don't see his actions as accomplishing anything of value.

I've said it before but anyone smart enough to committ murder and get away with it is also smart enough to know that murder doesn't accomplish anything positive for them. Which is why you rarely see politically motivated murders by smart people who don't make a lot of retarded mistakes like this guy did. They know there's better ways to accomplish their agendas than gunning down someone easily replaced within a month.

He doesn't seem quite as totally insane as like the school shooter types, but I don't think he's that smart. His takes here are very #iamsmrt level. It's like if you went to New York city and claimed the biggest peoblems facing America were the Elmo impersonators charging tourists for photos.

Very typical of the American college educated imho, they think they know everything about something with minimal exposure simply because they know more than the average prole but it's like, they miss the big picture and don't realize they're in their own bubble as well.

At any rate the guy is clearly intelligent but doesn't seem to be particularly, what's the word, self thinking? Deep thinking? Seems pretty shallow.

One of those things I think should be illegal. As a business primarily. I'm less totally weired out at the idea of say, someone's sister deciding to surrogate for their family that can't do it themselves. But when it comes to paying someone to do it for you, kinda just seems like it's immoral to me. Like it seems like you are essentially buying a child and taking it from its mother. Even if the child is genetically yours, smells like slavery to me.

I'm not sure why gay people can't just have kids the old fashioned way. Either adopt a poor orphan than needs a home or just have a gay couple find a lesbian couple they don't mind and work something out.

You know rather than paying some woman to get inseminated, carry to term, and then you take the baby. What's the difference between that and going to some shithole country and just buying a baby off someone? Smells like slavery.

They're questioning why this happens after Spain passes a progressive self ID law.

Seems obvious to me. You've basically removed ant qualifications for a "legal sex change" to just ticking a box on a form. This I suppose will limit the paperwork burdens on transsexuals but also give essentially a carte blanche for any bad actors to identify as women to access women's spaces. Result? Normal society doesn't give a fuck about trans people having less paperwork, doesn't raise an issue, they do give a fuck about creepy types, predators, and others going into women's spaces and creeping on women. You've removed one of the failsafe in the system designed to catch those people, now you don't catch them and its trivial for them "become women" so they can access women's spaces and predate on women. Result? Normal people are effected and backlash begins.

It's just beyond retarded to have these self ID laws in place, entirely self defeating to the trans movement as well. It's like that meme of the guy sticking the stick in his bicycle wheel. It's one thing to go off on a profanity laces tyrade. It's another to take the work and say "well it's not very good, the plot moves too fast, the characters aren't interesting, it's too derivative of XYZ" all opinions of course but if you're going to cry about that then how the hell you expect to improve? People are just going to stop talking to you. It just shifts the goal posts ever farther towards normal criticism having the same impact on these people as actual verbal abuse.

With the gender stuff as well. Basic questions, what is a woman? How can you be non-binary when there's no objective metric to determine that? Basic questions kind of make the whole thing fall apart because there aren't good answers but instead of reevaluating their beliefs they just take it as a personal attack.

I'm not an expert on Korean politics and unfortunately my knowledge of Korean is nearly non-existent so I can't read primary sources. But I think it is basically right to describe him as a right wing anti-communist president. In the context of Korean politics though I think that means more "anti-north" than anything. But I don't think there's really any "pro-north" positions truly. It's more a case of how strict they want to handle the North. Either hardine aggressive stance or more conciliatory stance. It also seems that people who want to adopt a more friendly and diplomatic stance towards the north are often accused of being communists. The political discourse is very heated it seems.

Korea is a very interesting country though despite how I think it's basically two dysfunctional societies, one capitalist, one communist, that you can compare if you want. South is obviously the better place to live all things considered but the propaganda war definitely tends to color things a certain way. North Korea for example does seem like it's definitely a communist shithole but I think the western ideal of it tends to be greatly exaggerated. There's people going there and living there, some degree of industry, and some countries have diplomatic relations with them. It's not totally cut off from the world but western media tends to ignore this.(probably because they won't allow journalists).

The south on the other hand is flashy and quite a high standard of living, with the highest suicide rate and lowest birth rates in the 1st world. Crazy feminists. Crazy anti-feminists. Crazy pseudo Christian cults. American style mega churches. It's a weird place. Also the fried chicken is better than the US. And they drink more than the Irish.

Korea is like the most extreme country on the planet I think. That probably best describes my kinda racist opinion I've picked up over the years that the Koreans are crazy. I like them, they're friendly. But they're fucking wild and go balls to the wall with whatever they do. Capitalism. Communism. Christianity. Gaming. Drinking. It's like moderation as a concept is non-existent.

South Korea has long had a, let's call it a chaotic political climate. Lots of corruption.

In the west you're going to be getting most of the news through a propagandistic lense. South is the US ally and a stable healthy democracy, North is a Communist shithole, true to some extent but like anything a gross oversimplification.

Since North and South Koreans are all Koreans it's not enough to say that communism is the only reason why North Korea is an insane dystopia. Other communist countries around the world have similar problems but are nowhere near North Korea. Likewise South Korea being capitalist isn't enough to describe its problems since other capitalist countries have similar problems but not quite to the same extent.

What North and South Korea do share are the same cultural roots. So it's not surprising that the political situations in both countries are dysfunctional. They share the same root culture.

There was a time not so long ago that South Korea was an impoverished dictatorship and the North was seen as an attractive destination for defection. That situatuon has changed a lot as capitalism did allow for Korea to have it's economic miracle leaving the North behind especially after the collapse of the Soviet union. However the political situatuon in South Korea has always been quite chaotic and you don't get much of it in the western news cycle, usually Korea only pops up when the North does something stupid.

At the moment it appears that the current president was going to be impeached and jailed for a reason I don't fully understand, and that he tried to declare martial law to prevent that procedure and pull off a de facto coup. It seems at the moment this strategy has failed spectacularly.

It is safe to assume both countries have spies in the other and some degree of "infiltration" if it can be called that but I don't think it is significant. I think the president is likely using that to call upon the fear of the North to rally supporters.

I've become more racist as I've gotten older and learned more about Korea as I'm convinced their culture North or South tends to produce a lot of crazy. Generally nice people most of the time, good food, interesting history, but their societies are fucked.

I think generally what happens is that creative types are more tolerant of certain kinds of weirdness than the rest of the planet. Especially in college. The problems come about when you get these fully disconnected from reality coupled with the unfortunate tendency of many creative types to be unable to handle criticism constructively.

I've made the argument a few times in groups that I've been in that while I personally don't really give a rats ass if you want to come into work dressed like a drag queen, and in fact honestly I appreciate the entertainment, it gives off an air of unprofessionalism that will be viewed negatively in most public facing rolls. Yes the verbal criticism you are getting is mostly coming from people who are "triggered" and bigoted to some degree but the damning problem isn't them it's the people that see it and are smart enough not to say anything just writing us off entirely, opportunities are lost. I might get shit on for mentioning this, but I'm not making the rules by which society operates I just understand that if you want to break them you have to accept the consequences.

Basically I think a loud minority just ends up controlling the social dynamic. In any situation it seems the most intolerant and loudest voices set the standards. Be that progressive or regressive. It's why people cringe at thought of Mohammed cartoons. Enough intolerant people out there willing to behead you over it. Why you don't say "hmm maybe having gay characters in this kid show isn't a good idea" enough crazies to brand you as a biggot and destroy your career convinces most to stay silent.

It's the "wrong side of history" argument. Yeah you say I'm on the wrong side of history but history isn't here yet. History is written by the victors. Trump one again does that mean he is on the right side of history.

It just seems obvious to me that if you are trying to market something, making a marketing campaign that targets some wildly small demographic at the risk of alienating your core market with some culture war bullshit is a losing proposition. It was the same with the Disney gay stuff. It doesn't matter if it's mostly tame and not controversial to you and your circle. You publish it, you lose loads of your potential market. And damage the brand. It's nothing new either seems nobody remembers the decades long boycott of Disney from the Baptists.

The entire reason this becomes an issue is because of how messy the language is. Allows for incendiary journalism to go by undetected by most.

I think it's one of those issues that just really resonates with female hysteria on both sides od the aisle. It's one of the more interesting statistics is that while opinions on abortions are basically split evenly between the sexes, women are more likely to take extreme positions on it. Think it's a consequence of emotional thinking.

Personally I don't care enough one way or the other despite my fairly strong opinions on it to think its a major issue worthy of much attention. I'll vote for people who don't share my opinion on it. But I know a lot of people who won't and it usually either boils down to emotional arguments about the poor dead babies or the emotional arguments about the poor women forced to become single mothers or something.

Yeah I've seen those studies. Waiting for a long term one to come about.

My theory is that dysphoria often essentially is a discomfort with one's self and gets misdiagnosed as gender dysphoria when it can better be described as self-dysphoria. After transition you are still you and so the dysphoria is still there.

I think some small proportion of the population do actually have gender dysphoria that might be cleared up by transition but I think it's very rare.

Oh, cute. You don't realize that denying people healthcare results in their deaths.

Sounds great. Healthcare runs counter to the survival of the fittest anyway and should be illegal. I propose we put a full ban on all forms of Healthcare. Think about how much money it will save the American tax payer.

Not like the US but the basic concepts will still exist legally. Quick search shows it's article 44 of the Irish constitution.

I'd assume it goes to court to determine whether or not the religious argument is sound. Which I think will prove difficult because the concept of choosing your own pronouns came about long after religious dogma was established and "Thou shalt not use they them pronouns" isn't so clearly written anywhere.

I'm more of a fan of the compelled speech argument. You can call yourself whatever you want and ask others to call you that too but other people aren't obligated to respond. Anyone who disagrees with this I then ask them to call me "your majesty" few oblige.

The World's Rarest Mineral Is So Rare It's Only Ever Been Found Once by Questionable in Earth

[–]Nonbinaryandroid 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Anti matter isn't found so much as it's synthesized in a partical accelerator and needs to be kept suspended in a magnetic field to prevent it from coming into contact with matter.

As such you can at most only synthesize a few particles at a time and it is extremely expensive to produce and store. So it probably is the "most expensive material" humans can produce but it's practically worthless outside of research since doing literally anything with it destroys it. Also it's not necessarily "rare" as it's easy as fuck to make it's just expensive as fuck to do so and store it.

You smack particles together it gets made naturally. Cosmic ray collisions make it on earth all the time. All anti matter is is normal matter with an opposite electrical charge. Positrons instead of electrons basically. But since they attract matter and self annihilate as soon as they come into existence they basically get destroyed.
