Most likely the news won't even cover it.

Leftist arrested for saying "kill Jk rowling" isn't exactly riveting news that drives clicks.

It's basically "police do their jobs".

You don't see those stories unless there is a political hook to them like you see with US immigration stories at the moment. Like the German teen backpackers getting denied entry.

They do but there is a double standard, though a lot of that has to do with reporting because the side that believes in freedom of speech and expression usually doesn't go around reporting people for violations.

KillJKROWLING is a pretty overt incitement to violence IMHO so I wouldn't have much problem reporting that and seeing that person get into legal trouble. Think that obviously crosses the line.

"Bring Back Witch Burning" I would consider to be satirical. Or at the very least using hyperbole. Which I wouldn't consider incitement per say, though it does start to get close to the line.

Though personally I think one of the best things you can do to these people is just to ignore the fuck out of them. Most of this is attention seeking behavior. Stick em with a fine. Then ignore them. No publicity. They want publicity.

Personally I prefer it when crazy people feel free to make stupid statements like this if they otherwise don't actually lead people to violence. Similar to my opinion on Nazis. I prefer that Nazis are free to express themselves as they wish so that I can know who the Nazis are and avoid them. I prefer to live in a world where the murderous psychopaths identify themselves before they commit their crimes since it is far easier to avoid an obviously telegraphed crime.

Let the idiots slander themselves to their hearts content imho.

The USA Real-ID implemtation deadline of May 7, 2025 and other possibly connected things
Nonbinaryandroid 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun 1 day ago

It's just a new form of the old mark of the beast conspiracy theories. Social security numbers, barcodes, all of that have been targets of it.

Real-ID is pretty much the feds just saying that states have to follow their ID standards if they want their ID accepted for federal purposes. Since in the past states have been pretty lax with certain ID requirements like drivers licenses, even allowing illegal immigrants to get them in some cases, along with other issues. Feds are just saying "follow our ID rules or you can't use it".

If you don't want to get a real ID then just don't. If you've got a passport you can just use that.

Sonic Fandom and Tumblr trans Fandom both have a lot of overlap with autists.

Sonic Fandom is particularly weird online because of it. "Pregnant Sonic fanfiction" is a decades old meme at this point.

I'm not sure the explanation behind it. I think part of it just comes from kids with internet access and not much sense just basically uploading their weird puberty journals with whatever nonsense they thought up. But I think pedophiles also to use children's characters as a grooming method. I suspect the state of online Fandom is a confluence of the two.

Similar to the argument that there are more trans people today simply because they've always been there and it's less stigmatized for them to be open about it now. I think that's true to a certain degree, I think some amount of gender dysphoria to be a relatively common consequence of puberty that was mostly taboo to discuss in the past, at the same time though now it seems like any sort of even very mild dysphoria is immediately treated as gender dysphoria, rather than simply "not wanting to grow up".

The people that the UK media went to for reactions to the Supreme Court ruling
Nonbinaryandroid 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun 1 day ago

The reactions are just convincing more people that the trans side is ridiculous. I'm seeing chatter where people are wondering why a court ruling about legal definitions in a certain law is drawing such a disproportionately extreme response.

I think most issues benefit from exposure but for the trans lobby I think it's the opposite. The more people know about it the less likely they are to support it. And the "shut up bigot" form of debate only works for so long.

Actually the burning bush just told Moses to get his ass back to Egypt to be God's prophet.

He got the ten commandments from God on top of a mountain later. Which he subsequently broke in anger (Moses not god) because when he came back from the mountain the bored Jews do what bored jews in the desert do best and had the equivalent of burning man. Except with a cow instead of a man.

Then Moses went back up the mountain with new tablets to get gods commandments a second time.

Then they were placed in a box that was hidden inside the temple and nobody could enter or see them under pain of death. Eventually the box was lost though an Ethiopian Christian sect now claims to have and protect them.

However during this time ancient jews built boats and sailed to America and wrote more sacred texts on golden plates in a strange language that were buried on a hill in New York, then Joseph Smith the American Moses found those golden plates after an angel appeared to him in a dream just like what happened to Mohammed except this dream was totally real because he found the golden plates and translated them despite being illiterate. It's a miracle.

Original Hebrew is [לֹא תִּרְצָח,] literally "Don't murder."

King James Translation of the Bible has it as "Thou Shalt Not Kill".

American Christian fundamentalists often consider the King James Version to be the only valid English translation so you will commonly see it quoted. Most interpret it as "don't commit murder" though some sects take it further to consider any homicide of any kind to be sinful that is a minority opinion. After all the Torah does prescribe the death penalty for a number of crimes including murder so it would be foolish to consider the Hebrew law to be inclusive of government sponsored homicide. Also consider the subsequent violent conquering of Isreal from the Cananites immediately after Moses's death.

Ms. Krauth: Celebrating Black History in Japan
Nonbinaryandroid 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun 2 days ago

if you look at the research, we really need to go after the power structures. But we’re part of the power structure, so we don’t really want to go after ourselves.

Thankfully the Japanese ancient tradition of seppuku offers a novel solution to this. Perhaps she would like to give a demonstration?

Also I find it quite hilarious she writes so many paragraphs defending the need for black history month in Japan but doesn't actually talk about black people at all. Lol some white witch can't even mention that one historical footnote of the African slave Yasuke the Japanese warlords decided to make a samurai. I mean that's actual history.

Nope it's "let's all read the case for reparations" yeah that shit will backfire in Japan lol. What case for reparations? Did Japan have black slavery? Nope. Alright then discussion over.

Upon a review of ancient literature (The early 20th century, the Dark Ages before the light of the internet), found a hilariously relevant passage.

So L. Frank Baum may be best known for the Wizard of Oz series, on a side not it also has one of the earlier instances of a "trans character" of sorts, not necessarily unusual in literature at the time as the trope of the woman disguising herself as a boy to hide from pirates or whatever is a pretty old one, but in the case of one of the Oz books, the Marvelous Land of Oz, the main character, a boy, is actually the princess of the kingdom who has been cursed by a witch to be a boy to hide her status as the true heir. Beyond that there is little to no connection to any sort of modern expression of trans ideology.

Upon looking over one of his other works, a 1905 novel called Queen Zixi of Ix, I found a pretty relevant passage.

The titular queen finds an alligator who wants to climb a tree, an owl who wants to swim like a fish, and then

"By and by she found a ferryman with a boat, and he agreed to row her across the river. In one end of the boat crouched a little girl, the ferryman’s daughter, and she sobbed continually, so that the sound of the child’s grief finally attracted Zixi’s attention.

“Why do you sob?” questioned the queen.

“Because I want to be a man,” replied the child, trying to stifle her sobs.

“Why do you want to be a man?” asked Zixi, curiously.

“Because I’m a little girl,” was the reply.

This made Zixi angry.

“You’re a little fool!” she exclaimed loudly.

196 “There are other fools in the world,” said the child, and renewed her sobs.

“‘WHY DO YOU SOB?’ QUESTIONED THE QUEEN.”

Zixi did not reply, but she thought to herself:

“We are all alike—the alligator, the owl, the girl, and the powerful Queen of Ix. We long for what we cannot have, yet desire it not so much because it would benefit us, as because it is beyond our reach. If I call the others fools, I must also call myself a fool for wishing to see the reflection of a beautiful girl in my mirror when I know it is impossible. So hereafter I shall strive to be contented with my lot.”

Clearly a different time lol.

Report: Trump Reportedly To Do Away With IRS Direct File Program For No Discernible Reason

Dunno, Trump seems to be keen on restructuring pretty much any government agency he can and firing anyone seen to be unnecessary. Seems to be using corporate restructuring tactics.

I don't think it is a very good approach for government but regardless the mindset seems to be, fire loads of people now and cut everything non-critical and fix it later. I suspect this program is a casualty of that.

Personally I think it is a bad idea for Trump since it generates him bad press but I think at this point Trump really doesn't care about the bad press anymore.

There is some degree of Boy Who Cried Wolf going on with journalists here, the temperature has been set to "HITLER" on their news coverage of Trump for awhile now so when Trump does actually do things that are really stupid or bad everyone has already burnt their tongues and won't drink any more news.

I think a lot of the upvotes and visibility is controlled by bots. Not sure most of the top level comments are, it falls into the age old problem of "anyone who disagrees with me is a bot/troll" mantra.

Regardless I think most people agree it isn't "organic".

Personally I think that so many in leftist online circles are essentially so far into their own bubbles that the very idea that Trump could win was alien to them and the results shocked them.

You'll always find one online.

I remember someone livid at a game once because while the game let them name their character there were no gender options. The horror. You have to play as the male silent protagonist. (The androgynous Japanese male silent protagonist with long hair. Lol)

There's a documentary on Netflix about the early game industry. Highs Score. In the first episode they're interviewing some trans woman who won a Space Invaders tournament who just goes on aboard how playing space invaders let them be their true self and their whole trans experience was based on that. And all I'm thinking here is that you play as a turret. Lol. If anything the turret is vaguely phallic, lol. They're going to find the trans experience in anything lol.

These types are pretty common in gaming spaces I think because mostly nobody pushes back and they don't have to much deal with the realities of their sex when playing a video game. I don't mind them in the spaces but so long as they don't start sharing their trans experience playing Ms. Pacman or whatever.

I think game journalists love them because they can use then in a narrative countering "toxic masculinity" in gamer culture post gamergate. Though I think the toxic masculinity was mostly imagined in the first place. Unless we count early online voice chat, where I think people just were shocked with their first encounter of the anonymity effect.

It's the internet anytime you make an exclusive group online it's basically impossible to tell if people are actually members of that group and it's beyond easy to just pretend to be to gain access, so once you set up the online lesbian group on your anonymous message board naturally it's just going to attract every "male lesbian" that demands entry along with all the trolls that find it hilarious to poke fun at them.

Also why you shouldn't take stuff so seriously online. "My lesbian partner dislikes my lesbian penis, how can I make it more feminine?" Type posts could be a crazy person or could be a troll taking the piss. Either way it's a stupid idea that isn't much good beyond a quick laugh at the absurdity of it.

Problem is Reddit and especially the moderators take everything there super duper serious and don't understand those facts of online discourse so they tend to run things into the ground. Any culture war issues especially they can't differentiate between dissent and trolling since it's all based on ideological purity anyway so any disagreement eventually will be viewed in bad faith.

There was a big split in the LGBT type spaces between those looking to further the culture war and those who were just gay and didn't give a fuck. Naturally the culture war position in these online spaces will always win since the "normies" go outside from time to time to get some fresh air and can't compete with the basement dwellers constant attempts at banning them. And why compete anyway? Since it's largely a waste of time.

Reddit is just doomed to become increasingly irrelevant. It's already got a reputation very different from what it had a decade ago.

Cycle of online discourse. Something new comes along. Smart people or those seeking novelty tend to be early adopters. As it gets popular the "stupid masses" come in and start edging out the original users and with the masses the most extreme voices will be the loudest and eventually after a period of struggle one side will win and ban the other. Other side gives up and moves on elsewhere. Those that remain slowly purity spiral until it reaches a breaking point and there is push back and recovery before cycling back into a purity spiral over some new issue and slowly the user base just dwindels until it dies.

Meanwhile the same process repeats itself elsewhere.

Moderators online are like tin-plated dictators of homeowner associations. They get the smallest amount of power and go crazy. But since the stakes are basically nothing nobody got time for that petty bullshit so they "win" by default.

I think they know they don't pass they've just convinced themselves that "woman" is some abstract identity concept that can't be defined as this nebulous concept of "gender" when in reality humans are simply biologically driven to automatically recognize the opposite sex for purposes of reproduction so ones self concept of how they present is meaningless.

Nonbinaryandroid 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun 3 days ago

The articles are crap.

Basically they just use spectrometry to detect elements. They've found evidence of a molecule that we know is made by life on earth.

It's a bit like saying "carbon dioxide comes from plants so if we detect carbon dioxide it is an indicator of life" which is true. But we find loads of carbon dioxide on venus and there's zero life there so it doesn't really mean anything.

This element makes a stronger case than carbon dioxide but the basic premise is the same.

Also worth mentioning that scientists once speculated that Venus had jungles before we knew more about it and the literal hellscape that planet is.

I tend to think the assumption being made is that since life is everywhere on Earth we expect it to be everywhere in space as well but so far my opinion is that explorations of space have indicated it to be entirely sterile and while that doesn't preclude the possibility of life in space it does lead me to be very skeptical of any claims that it exists. As so far everywhere we've investigated is totally sterile save for what we've brought with us.

It's a problem with so called "science journalism" being sensationalist garbage.

I read an article on this and it took paragraphs of drivel before they got to the point. Didn't even mention what it was they found.

Cliffnotes version, there's initial evidence of a molecule that we associate with live on earth. That could mean life, it could mean some other process made it, or it could mean that the molecule isn't actually there and it's something else entirely.

To say it's a biosignature is a gross exaggeration. Like most of these articles when they say "earth like planet" reading the details usually means "giant mass roughly 2 or 3 times the size of earth orbiting so close to its star that it's surface likely melts during the day may have elements that earth also has".

For the average person without multiple income streams then I think that it isn't that hard. People seem uniquely retarded the instant a tax form is put in front of them.

If you've got any sort of money it's just cheaper to hire a tax lawyer to find you as many loopholes as possible anyway.

I'm not sure what the market is for these free tax filing programs. People who failed math class and can't read? Oh wait that describes lime 50% of the American population eh? Never mind.

Nonbinaryandroid 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun 3 days ago

I hope so. I think the more fragmented and insular nature of western society especially along with the internet and social media lessens this effect.

I guess I take a big distinction between educated Muslims who I think will assimilate fine and won't cause many problems with uneducated migrants who I think tend to struggle a lot more financially and socially and as such their kids are often isolated from the normal socializing effects of society and more likely to be radicalized

This is more likely as homeschooling becomes a more popular education choice and the more extreme religious types choose it to prevent their kids from exposure to secular issues as many in education fail to see the harm caused by overt gay flag waving "offending the bigots" and the removal of their kids from system.

Essentially my fear is the creation of an undersclass with religious fanaticism as a dangerous combination for any democratic society especially if the underclass gains substantial population compared to other groups in a short amount of time.

Nonbinaryandroid 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun 6 days ago

Historical trends aren't relevant here.

In the modern world what is relevant are birthrates. Basically the very religious, Muslim or otherwise, are having way more kids than "normal people".

Now unlike the quiverfull movements naive assumption that kids will hold the same ideological bend as their parents, reality is more complicated but, given enough time the demographics do shift, and in any sort of democratic society that will affect voting habits and policy.

Very simplistic model, over time Muslim population raises naturally through higher birthrates and immigration to replace an aging population that needs workers. This population holds ideals that aren't in line with the progressive ideology and begin to shift the laws away towards more conservative issues.

I don't really have a problem with that as if the west and progressive ideology fails to produce the next generation it is a doomed ideology and will naturally get supplanted by a successful one, mor do I mind most reasonable Muslims but the extremes of Muslim society are something I think that need to be protected against unless we want to see society devolve back to lynching homosexuals and blasphemers.

But I basically agree that it will spread mostly peacefully and blend. But it's a case of demographic shift due to birthrates and the problems that come from the extremes of Islamic thinking tend to put a chilling effect on discussion of ways to prevent those extremes.

My hope is that western trends toward the secular are strong enough that the next generation of Muslims aren't "devout" to the point of zealotry but trends there seem to be reversing and I pray it doesn't devolve into another holy war.
