Yikes, estrogen being cheap doesn't mean that it's a good idea for a man to be on it. You think this is about finances?

OP, sorry, but if that was my brother I'd tell him he's not a fucking woman and you know because you've known him his entire life. Tell him to snap out of the bullshit. Tell him about the negative medical consequences from being on hormones, the unncessary surgery of transitioning, the many years he'll waste, the normal life he'll waste, ask him what he thinks his future will look like when he's past his 50s and he's a weird, creepy dude walking around in women's clothes. Does he want to live a normal life of does he want to become a social pariah and a life-time medical patient dependent on hormones and dilations? And even worse so, he'll be dependent on a healthcare system that's not adapted for people like him. Does he want all the social consequences that comes with being a man pretending to be a woman?

It would just be a dealbreaker. They're afraid of being who they are because they don't fit into the most shallow, stereotypic image of femininity there is. And it also suggests a really misogynic view of other women.

[–]Marsupial 37 insightful - 1 fun37 insightful - 0 fun38 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Of course he seems happier now, he's found a fantasy he's allowing himself to get fully engrossed in, denying all reality. He gets to walk around playing a character of extreme stereotypic femininity. That happiness won't last because reality can't be denied forever. The fantasy will get old, he'll get reminded he's a man, he'll get reminded that he can never be the woman he pretends to be, and that's when the dysphoria hits again.

Frankly, I don't think there's anything you can say that he'll be susceptible to. Don't include him in doing things that are "girly". Don't include him in duscussions about anything that has to do with women or feminine topics. Don't feed into his fetish. Enjoy your time alone with your sister. If he's being creepy tell him he's creepy and that what he's doing isn't what women do. And tell him that you won't spend time with him if he's going to make creepy comments slike that. Set boundaries- you don't have to listen to somebody who makes you uncomfortable, you don't have to be part of his fantasy. You don't have to listen to things that make you uncomfortable, you don't have to ignore your own feelings to make somebody else happy.
Imo the person you used to know is gone, or was never who you thought they were in the first place.

The real-world effect is personal affirmation/validation for transwomen. If they can call themselves mothers and usurp motherhood, which is pretty much the essence of femininity, surely they are "actual women".

It's all about their narcissism. The best society can do is to not go along with the delusions because they won't stop. And by "not go along" I mean, don't give them an X for gender instead of M/F, don't tell them they're women, don't provide affirmation for their belief that they are women. Acknowledge them as the men they are and refuse to play along.

Many countries recognize that trans people deserve rights, but they're still far from abandoning biological sex as a concept. It seems like you're trying to conflate different things here. Perpetrators absolutely need to get called out. That's a whole different thing from "ree lesbians who don't sleep with men are transphobes" but you're trying to mix them up. Writing everything in bold does not mean you have a point.

It's insane. On a perfectly healthy woman's body, remove her breasts. Reshape her chest, maybe causing nerve damage in the process. Reshape her vagina to a penis. Stitch up her labia. Alter the urethra. Maybe even remove her uterus. On a perfectly healthy man's body, remove his penis to make a surgical hole that has to be dilated every day to not close up. Take skin from other body parts to make it, sometimes by cutting up the colon. Remove his testicles. Create breasts. Surgically alter his voice. Shave the cartilage in the throat to remove the Adam's apple. Modify facial bone structure until he looks like something he's not.

Give them hormones that aren't natural for their genetic setup. Assure them that this will make them happy. Start telling children and vulnerable teenagers that this is what they may want in the future and block their normal development.

It's barbaric.

I can't really blame anybody for not wanting to date somebody who's trans. There's just so much to upack. There's the social impact, there's the life-long treatments and medical implications, there's the dysphoria component, there's the fact that their bodies are not functioning as the gender they claim to be of and then there are the problems I see all over the trans community with the extreme need for validation and reassurance. I'd never volunteer to a relationship that from the start is full of trauma, dysfunction and mental illness.

There's also the question what you're selecting for when studying the transgender community. Are the suicide/suicide attempts the result of dysphoria in an otherwise healthy population? Or is the dysphoria just a symptom that manifests in people with a very high degree of mental illness? Their problem may not be the dysphoria, it's likely to be mental illness that's causing them to be dysphoric.

Also, I think becoming dysphoric after you've mutilated your body, ruined many of its innate functions through puberty blockers and HRT, and wasted years of your life setting all other things aside to become something of a social inbetween that doesn't fit into normal societal context anymore is a perfectly sane and normal response. It's reasonable to feel bad after having violated yourself, destroyed your body and ruined your life that way.

The problem with basing political categorization on the US system is that there are pretty much only two parties in the US system. And right now, the right wing is setting the tone. If something is not right-wing, it ends up being viewed as left-wing. So the definition of left-wing sort of becomes "whatever the right doesn't like", and it's simply not an accurate characterization. There are so many more nuances in politics.

There's this weird idea that "left" means that you have to be inclusive of EVERYTHING that's not plain right-wing and it's simply not true. People have started to lump everything up with "the tolerant left", but the trans movement has nothing to do with "left" and just because somebody is left-wing in politics doesn't mean they have to be inclusive of every movement or every idea out there.

I don't believe for a second that the trans movement is as widespread as these people try to make it seem. For most people transsexuality is extremely removed from their every day life and "trans rights" is at most an afterthought. Most people don't know what a TERF is and the absolute majority of people believe in men and women as the two genders and characterize people based on what they see. The vast, vast majority of people will never believe that TWAW if the TW they're facing looks like a man. And they know very well that men don't menstruate, get pregnant och have a vagina, and the women don't have dicks.
These ego stroking comments are just a small subset of peopole in a movement very few people care about, trying to make it seem like they're a majority.

The problem is that you're very much wrong. There are people who do not identify as female who menstruate. So it's not a female-only act. I am a transgender man, meaning the doctors labeled me as female at birth because of the genitalia I presented with. I grew up, hit puberty, began menstruating, and then learned that I am a man.

Lady, I have some news for you...

My best friend is also a transgender man. He is also pregnant now.

LOL

For the FtM children that are now detransitioning, I can imagine getting away from the everyday sexism, objectification harrassment and the male gaze that teenage girls face is a huge help in learning to accept to live as the girls they were born as.

There are also other posts where it's clear that he's overexagerrating the negative effects of the surgery and is imagining things (like the poop smell) that aren't even there. I doubt there was any actual problem with the medical procedure. This was a very mentally ill person who had unrealistic expectations of what the outcome would be and they shouldn't have been recommended transition surgery to begin with, they should have been prescribed heavy doses of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medication, therapy and probably other treatments as well.

This person should have been treated with all the psychological/psychiatric help they could get, not surgery. They clearly had unrealistic expectations of the surgery and life afterwards and should not have been operated on. I don't think their surgery was "botched", from a medical standpoint it was most likely perfectly fine, but it's simply a fact that a neovagina does not replicate an actual vagina and people should not be given the idea that transition surgery will change their sex, nor should psychologically vulnerable people like this be recommended transition surgery.

I'm wondering if this is something that arises from being unable to handle the fact that there are nuances to human behavior, it's not black and white. They do not fit the stereotypes of their sex, don't understand that they're just stereotypes not absolutes, and try to change to conform to the black and white of either femininity or masculinity because of inability to accept the variance within each modality.

Kind of ironic that a sub that claims to fight misogyny will happily support violence against women under the guise of "kink" and ignore the millions of women being abused and exploited in "sex work" ie prostitution. Any sub that supports sex work and violent anti-women kinks is not feminist, nor is it supportive of women. Oppression is no less oppression just because the oppressed think they deserve it.

How about we don't conflate the gender issue with something that's actually feasible, ie an American becoming French by becoming a French citizen? This is not an apt comparison and the rethoric tends to border right-wing arguments. This comparison sounds like an attempt to muddy the discourse. Changing citizenship or moving countries are not the same thing as attempting to change your sex.

[–]Marsupial 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

People being shocked and terrified at the mere mention of girls learning how their body functions. And children are not traumatized by accidentally hearing about how a tampon functions on tv, holy fuck. This outrage is just another example of how women's and girls' bodies are constantly sexualized to the extent that we can't even discuss something completely non-sexual like a period that is a completely natural thing about women's bodies that happens every month without people reaching for the smelling salts. It's ridiculous. All they did was to describe how to use it with their hands, it's not like they had a close-up demonstration with an actual vagina.

Young girls need to learn how to interact with their bodies. They need to know how to insert a tampon. The presence of a vagina does not mean it's sexual. This is not education on how to use a dildo, this is about using hygiene products.

Same. But I think that it's a misogynic and oppressive feature that's been mixed up with culture in a way that makes many women unable to recognize it for the oppression that it is, or accepting of it through internalized misogyny in the guise of tradition. I would not attack a woman who wore one. I do not approve of the practice. I think it's questionable to make laws to restrict the use in adult women. I believe the use of hijab for children and underage girls should be absolutely banned. I fully support the ban of the burqa and the niquab as these are about full erasure and dehumanization of the person wearing them.

Nobody's forcing you to give up your belief, but you will have to deal with the fact that people won't make excuses for misogynic behavior just because it's done under a religous or cultural banner. If the way you practice your religion means you're supportive of misogynic practices then it may just be that no, it's not the right place for you. If you do not support misogynic practices, it may be. I also don't believed in washed-out choice feminism, just because a woman claims she does something of free will does not mean she's not oppressed, does not mean she actually does it of free will and does not mean that she's not propagating sexist beliefs that are harmful to other women. As for you personally I obviously have no idea how you practice or what you stand for so whether you fit in? Nobody here will be able to tell you.

I can't speak for everybody but personally I am not inclusive of misogynic behavior and not every community will welcome everybody, that's just something adults have to deal with- you won't get met by applause and participation trophies just for turning up and posting.

German state bans burqas, niqabs in schools by blackrainbow in GenderCritical

[–]Marsupial 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not oppressing women and girls is very central to radical feminism and has been from day one. Cultural relativism is not an excuse to oppress. There is nothing racist about protecting the rights of children. There is also a difference between burqa/niquab and the hijab. The hijab is more debatable since it's merely a hair covering, but the sole intention of the burqa/niqab is to make the girl/woman invisible and don't even show her face. It's an attempt to erase and dehumanize a person simply because of their sex. Nothing that the amish/catholic wear come close to the burqa/niqab. Burqa/niqabs are purely oppressional. There is absolutely no reason they should be accepted.

[–]Marsupial 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If you spend your life thinking you're something you're not, to the extent that it makes you suicidal, depressed, dysphoric or otherwise affects your everyday life to the extent that the only way out you can imagine is to perform an unnecessary surgical procedure and medicate with hormones, again for no medical benefit but only because something in you is telling you you need to, followed up by a constant need for validation that you pass otherwise your dysphoria gets triggered, then you have a mental illness. And that's even before I get into the autogynephiliacs.

Nobody can help having a mental illness. But telling a mentally ill person that the way to feel better is to undergo an unnecessary procedure, and to go along with the delusions of a mentally ill patient and even encourage them is so insanely unethical.

I don't think you could have been more wrong tbh. It's a fact that there are variances to how women are percieved in different cultures. I believe few women are as priviliged as white women. White women are still hurt by sexism but I believe it is inaccurate to portray it as white women having a more difficult time overall than WoC.
It's not a competition. Feminism includes all women. Different cultures have different problems. Different groups have different ways of oppressing women, it's the misogyny that's universal. White women are exposed to sexism but are NOT the most vulnerable group of women.

[–]Marsupial 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Intersectionalism in terms of working for equality over races and culture is important and is definitely not the worst thing to feminism. If feminism is for all women it needs to be intersectional. Feminism needs to act for the freedom and safety of all women regardless of race and class.
Accepting oppression because it's part of a culture, like the burqa and similar, is a different thing.

Being calm and expressing an opinion is a different thing than what you're asking for. You're asking for meekly going along with their agenda because you're afraid of being viewed as "toxic". You're asking women to suppress their opinions, smile and be nice in order to get along, all because you didn't like the tone of one post. This is tone policing and more of the same old misogyny that women are not allowed to get angry or upset men or they deserve what's coming to them. This meekness you're suggesting is what lets TRAs take over subs on Reddit and move the boundaries in social media- people being afraid to speak up because "oh maybe it won't come across as nice!"
