Elon said he might bring back vine. Would you use it? by Canbot in whatever

Reawakening Vine seems like the perfect business strategy as long as they manage to properly monetize it this time, like Tiktok apparently has figured out. It could boost Twitter in the face of cancel-culture attacks and disinvestment from the left while simultaneously weakening the Chinese influence and data-harvesting promulgated by Tiktok. Bonus points if it has the same hands-off moderation, though I find that unlikely.

Don't give your money to companies that think searching and monitoring your files is remotely OK.

If you're using free versions of their software, encrypt your stuff beforehand, and maybe change the filename (I think there might be front-end programs that do this automatically for you). You'll still be costing them money for server space, and getting all the benefits of normal use, but they can't search your data or harvest it to analyze or sell.

Are we really supposed to believe 370,000+ Russians have fleed the country in fear of military enlistment? Since Sept 21 lol? by Herpa_Derpa_Island in WorldNews

[–]Mangomatt 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It's both definitely anti-Russian propaganda and perfectly reasonable. Russia's population is 150 million, of which 370k is about .25%. If you showed me a room of 400 Russians facing rumors of a draft, I'd be surprised if you couldn't find at least 1 who's so afraid of military service, is so hooked on Western media, or hates his own country so much that he'd try to leave the country or go into hiding, and maybe take his family with him.

If the US ever got into literally any military conflict, offensive or defensive, I'd expect all the leftists and degenerates refusing to fight would be ten times that percentage at the bare minimum.

Are Russians even getting that much western media anymore? I sorta thought all the media companies and the Russian Government started banning each other in escalating tit-for-tats when this all started.

If you expect privacy but aren't approaching your online life as if every entity involved- from your search engine to your social media (duh) to your ISP to your phone manufacturer- may be purposefully or involuntarily recording and tracking every bit of data you give them in order to tie it to you, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Every ISP in the US has been ordered to block three pirate streaming services by [deleted] in piracy

[–]Mangomatt 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't know if any defense against the order would necessarily rely on the First Amendment, or if it does it might not be from the obvious angle. I'm tempted to say it should be overruled or reigned in a bit on procedural grounds for trying to enforce a court order on groups who are not party to the case in any way, shape, or form, including ordering around unspecified groups who don't even know about the order, but IDK if that's an allowable practice in law or not.

I wouldn't count on the whole thing getting much attention, though- since the website is just ignoring the court, the only ones who could fight it would be the ISPs and businesses who want to provide services to the website, none of whom are likely to dedicate the resources for a lawsuit when it's much easier to just comply.

On the other hand, a single judge's order doesn't generally set any real precedent unless it get appealed and reviewed by a higher-level court.

Perhaps have multiple different upvote (and maybe downvote) types and allow individual guilds to decide which is appropriate for them to enable based on what kind of discussion guildowners want? Though that might make it feel too much like a crappy social media site with reactions and add difficulty in merging guilds into a coherently ranked front page. Maybe more appropriate for a federated approach than a single website. Otherwise I think the 2-upvote system is more interesting and useful, though there's more of a demand for and expectation of the traditional up-down system.

BitTube is a peer-to-peer, decentralized, censorship-free video sharing and live streaming platform based on IPFS and blockchain technology. Unlike Youtube, BitTube is ad-free. by [deleted] in DecentralizeAllThings

[–]Mangomatt 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Whenever someone claims IPFS is censorship-free, I feel the need to mention that IPFS is incredibly weak against censorship and tracking at the browser/application/local machine level and at the 'file discovery' stage (i.e. sites like bitchute). Still, I try to use bitchute occasionally, though it'd be better if they had a competent monetization policy to make themselves more financially robust.

/s/ice_poseidon2. A group originally formed on reddit to protest/counter the main subreddit of the former twitch, then YouTube, then mixer, then youtube again livestreamer Ice Poseidon. Everyone there were 'fans' who grew to resent him because of a percieved decline in quality and personality. They thought he was censoring dissent because he controlled his main subreddit, so they basically made their own group dedicated to hating him. Both subreddits got quarantined then banned due to the fanbase toxicity, but only the hate subreddit successfully migrated here, where it now stands as a strange monument to loving and/or hating various things about him, streamers formerly associated with him, and the significant counterculture they've created as a result of their obsession.

I agree with your concern, it would do a disservice to those groups and users if we lacked a natural way to discover them, especially if they feel they have to do such filtering to some degree to avoid being overwhelmed by angry dissidents or mainstream users who dont care to learn any nuance or background before commenting. I would personally lean towards leaving it be for a while to let more people form an opinion on it, see how bad the problem is, and explore alternative options.

Have you considered keeping 'all' as the one that shows absolutely everything and splitting off a separate feed, sort of like reddit's 'popular', that filters out such rulebreaking communities and would be more useful for fostering discussion on those communities that don't restrict it?
