To be honest I don't see that much disagreement between governments of many countries. I see it on the political level, but that's actually different than the running the government level.

What I see is all politics and government is about being given responsibility for "things". That is not very specific. You forgot the why. Snowden underestimated how apathetic the American public is about things they don't understand. He underestimated Congress et al's ability to dismantle the bureaucracy and intelligence gathering apparatus.

The central problem is that government wants/needs these kind of tools for intelligence purposes. So the people involved create cock-and-bull stories about why it's all OK and then built the infrastructure. It succeeded well beyond anything I had ever imagined. And my congressmen, along with all the rest I assume, is presented with a difficult choice to make among hundreds of other competing priorities. They chose to blow the whole thing off with "reforms" that bureaucracies know don't matter and preserve the central purpose of the structure.

So today, we have to understand that officialdom, from the CIA to local law enforcement, will literally be able to read everything we put into the computer. And it's not what you're doing today, it's what you've written for your entire life. Along with every other digital scrap that gets attached like pictures, video, and spreadsheets. Does local law enforcement have that access today ? I'm not sure, but I'm also very sure that it's coming if not.

I have noticed that when technical terms like this are used, and the audience (me, and others) have no idea what they mean, and then they keep getting used, the story becomes less believable.

What I'm getting from context is a "limited hangout" is an intelligence agency revealing some, unimportant, details to the public. This is to make the public think that's the whole story. And I guess Snowden is one - okay.

What was always obvious to me was that Snowden was going to be wrong about some pieces of his story. Whatever he knew, it wasn't the complete picture. There's probably more going on than we all heard about, powerpoints and all the rest notwithstanding. None of that detracts from the critical message he tried to push out.

So I've read a lot of comments here and I'm trying to absorb what's happening.

In addition to adhering to Saidit's policies, Saidit itself has to agree to an AUP in order to receive hosting. Do all the hosting companies have these kind of AUP's ? Is it the standard stuff like no violence, racism, etc ?

So the only free speech we have left is if you host your own physical server, or are there additional barriers at that level. I can think of at least one, domain registration, where you probably have to agree to the same AUP.

Visa/MC also refuse to do business with the marijuana industry. That's illegal federally but legal in many states. Because it's illegal federally it's against the US banking laws to process payments for marijuana businesses so they CANNOT process those payments. Thus marijuana businesses rely heavily on cash.

If it happens for marijuana, I suspect it can/will happen for other reasons.

I think people have been trying, for years. Credit cards are pretty safe to use for consumers in the sense of fraud, so everyone wants to use the big names. Consumer Credit protection laws worked well and really entrenched them.

Cryptocurrency is one way to break their backs. But it's missing a key component of most currencies - stored value. Playing with Bitcoin is like playing the stock market, not safe.

Everything else seems to fall down and give up. I have read countless stories about this or that payment system that disappear. The latest entrant in the race seems to be Venmo, which might finally catch on with people so addicted to their phones. I don't use it since they desupported use of a computer to access their system. Maybe they'll just sort of fade away like Paypal has - all I see Paypal as today, is something weird I have to use sometimes to get charges onto my credit cards.

Realistically, the way to process payments without Visa/Mastercard is to use cash.

Based on this, it seems like lawyers are not simply permitted to ask jurors about politics. But that's exactly what they want to know about you, as a juror. Based on your politics they know if you'll vote for their client or against him.

The rationale for preemptory challenges is to “allow parties to remove jurors whom they believe, based only on a suspicion, to be biased.”

We're experiencing an experiment - can the existing Reddit be toppled for something better ? Same form and function, but better ruleset ?

All I can vaguely remember about Reddit's beginning were posts about the issues of the day, free speech, computer stuff, and jokes and funny things. None of that was organized around sub-communities as far as I could tell at the time, but they were all there underneath the aggregator software of the site.

Where I see Saidit right now, is ready for actual testing of the aggregator functions to bring interesting stuff to the top. Stuff needs to get that 100 "insights" and "funnies". Maybe that's more people with low participation, or maybe that's a core of people with tons of participation.

Since I don't know I'll just share what I'm trying to do -

Step up and mod community/communities I know I can sustain a long term interest in. Broad is good but niche is OK too. The juggling act is when to create/mod a new community versus participating in the ones we have or which are inactive.
Post as much as feasible HERE instead of The Bad Place. There's no useful social commentary over there but the gaming coverage is top notch. Bet the funny can come over here pretty easy too.
Commit to participating once a day. Small steps in large numbers make a big difference, I'll try to be part of the solution.

One thing on my mind is "fake it til you make it", which apparently is what Reddit did. Staff members posted TONS AND TONS during the early days to get everyone started. Is that needed here or will organic growth and exile drive things forward ?

I think business restrictions tend to favor very large businesses and the existing ones. Whatever regulation would ensue after extending the first amendment to websites, would work to prevent the creation of "The New Saidit" or whatever, and instead ensure Reddit/Facebook/Twitter keep out rivals.

I will never forget the first time I saw this in action.

The Los Angeles CA area has a subreddit, and very few republican congressmen left. The Democratic party identified one who they could defeat, and decided to work extra hard (spend extra money etc) to defeat this guy.

The subreddit suddenly gets a picture of this Republican, with a title showing unsubstantiated nonsense. It's not even a meme - just a picture of the guy. It's all about the stuff they put in the title, to smear him and get people to vote for the other guy. And from the time I last checked the subreddit (1 am) - no picture posted - to getting into the office (6 am) - the picture has the most upvotes of all time in the subreddit.

It was clearly a phony account getting mass machine upvotes, but it got people super riled up about the congressman and tons of comments from regular posters. Nobody wanted to hear me when I said "Hey something's wrong here".

Same thing OP is mentioning, but this is literally politics.

Reddit shut them down.

They didn't do it by closing the sub to posting, instead, they did the death by admin pressure. First it was quarantined for sketchy reasons, then they decided they were going to remove all the admins.

Removing the existing admins, for admins vetted by the Reddit administrators, was too much for the current admins who locked the whole subreddit down thus achieving what spez wanted anyway.

I never liked the subreddit but the chilling effect on political and free speech is glaringly obvious and made me furious.

The violence we are seeing now is the predictable result of prosecutors, judges and jurors usurping justice. If we want to prevent social unrest, it would be helpful if we allow justice. That would require ending both the biased rulings by activist judges and the excuses prosecutors make for their failure to prosecute. It will also require a pervasive change in the attitude of people towards police who inflict violence.

Someone shadowbanned you for something you did. You not only were not informed you committed a crime, you were judged and sentenced without any opportunity for defense. The technology industry has a need for some kind of due process system to prevent this.

Seems Quayle got a bad rap over this one. It's easy to see the word written plural and think it would be singular just by removing the "S". I can't think of another word that behaves like this one does.

That's true, but look at it long term.

When the loans the Fed is making are repaid, the net effect to the economy was zero.

When the treasuries are purchased, you put money back into lenders hands to lend out to whatever needy cause, and you reduce the public debt. This benefit is offset to some degree by the inflationary printing of money you noted.

Compare that to paying off student loans. That is an action that prints money and gives it away from the Fed, free and clear, to benefit the students drowning in debt. The Fed neither gets the money back nor reduces public debt. But it should also stimulate the economy to some degree since you put so much money in consumers pockets.

Man, economics is crazy.

Prosecutors checked and found that Turner’s record also included two domestic violence arrests, plus charges including assault and disorderly conduct. When he was questioned directly in court, Turner repeatedly denied ever having been arrested on a domestic violence charge.

With that, plus the conversation the police cruiser dashcam captured, it sounds like this guy was trying very hard to get on the jury and find the defendant not guilty; a so called stealth juror.
