To be honest I don't see that much disagreement between governments of many countries. I see it on the political level, but that's actually different than the running the government level.

What I see is all politics and government is about being given responsibility for "things". That is not very specific. So there's a massive amount of pressure to deflect responsibility for anything that goes bad. So why did you pick that coronavirus set of actions ? Well, I had to, because the entire EU was doing it. It's that kind of thing.

"I confess I raped my sister." And they take him to jail for a bit, meanwhile he has 14 undiscovered corpses in his basement.

Okay. I'm not aware of what the corpses are when it comes to Snowden, all I've heard about is the rape. And I'm sure the corpses are there, to stretch the analogy, but it might not be 14 it might be less. It's probably an accurate term.

Still, I'm just suggesting that it's a really weird phrase. Neither one of us is a CIA employee.

More importantly is how this message was pushed out. It was a sneaky political theater psyop to have people believe the evil spying government let one slip away to reveal how they spy on us.

It's not necessary to invoke any conspiracy to explain what happened. Snowden was a bright guy who pulled all the right strings to get his message out. The public didn't care, the dumb bastards. Congress didn't fight the battle, the dumb schmucks. The three letter agencies all fought to keep the program because that's how life works. The president sided with the intelligence agencies, probably not seeing the damage he was doing.

So, we have congress pretending to end the retention of mass bulk data, thusly, assuring the utilization of backdoors via telecommunication companies who have had a long history of doing business with intelligence agencies.

Yup. Depressing as all get out.

In 2015, congress wanted you to believe a filibuster would prevent the NSA from sending malware to targets.

You have to remember that Congress is made up of individual actors. It's not some kind of monolith.

As we know, congress is incorporated

Yeah I know. THEY pull their strings. I've heard this before.

most of the policies and legislation passed or debated about would be disregarded by the surveillance apparatus anyway.

I think this is much more complicated than this blithe assertion. Beliefs like the above actually help the surveillance state immensely.

And when you finally understand that 9/11 was a false flag operation orchestrated by a 5th column within the UNITED STATES corporation, specifically the executive branch, riddled with Zionist neoconservatives as well as pro-Likudnik factions within US intelligence agencies and private companies who were contracted to coordinate the event, you will realize that the Islamaphoiba after 2001 was a desired goal and that the data mining to combat the faux existential threat of domestic radical Islamic jihadis -- terrorists hiding around every corner -- was concocted to erect an unconstitutional surveillance system that allegedly permeates every facet of our world today.

The simpler explanation is usually the correct one. 9/11 happened because of Islamic extremists. CIA/NSA/Cops want to look at your digital evidence. These things can exist independently.

Tor is a honeypot created by the DoD.

There's one I haven't heard. It's starting to sound like you're telling me nothing is what it seems.

Ah, now we're really getting to Snowden :

Ask yourself, were the Snowden leaks supposed to trigger a revolt against the police-state-surveillance apparatus, did they? No, far from it. Instead, they enhanced the centralization and power of this apparatus.

This is a spot on observation.

Were they supposed to trigger the revolt ? Yes, they were.

Did they ? No, far from it.

You forgot the why. Snowden underestimated how apathetic the American public is about things they don't understand. He underestimated Congress et al's ability to dismantle the bureaucracy and intelligence gathering apparatus.

The central problem is that government wants/needs these kind of tools for intelligence purposes. So the people involved create cock-and-bull stories about why it's all OK and then built the infrastructure. It succeeded well beyond anything I had ever imagined. And my congressmen, along with all the rest I assume, is presented with a difficult choice to make among hundreds of other competing priorities. They chose to blow the whole thing off with "reforms" that bureaucracies know don't matter and preserve the central purpose of the structure.

So today, we have to understand that officialdom, from the CIA to local law enforcement, will literally be able to read everything we put into the computer. And it's not what you're doing today, it's what you've written for your entire life. Along with every other digital scrap that gets attached like pictures, video, and spreadsheets. Does local law enforcement have that access today ? I'm not sure, but I'm also very sure that it's coming if not.

What are some ways in which the oligarchy might utilize a limited hangout operation to fulfill an agenda?

I don't know. I don't care.

Every bureacracy performs damage control when something happens to screw things up. So the NSA/CIA/etc did damage control. Why should I care ? I'm still aware everything on the 'net gets hoovered up and stored. And the three letter agencies want to continue to do it. They successfully rode out the storm and the average citizen now thinks none of it matters.

DIA counterintelligence trainer

Dell contractor for NSA

Booz Allen Hamilton analyst for NSA

Someone as famous as him ? Seems unlikely. But you could be right.

Certainly, 9/11 Truthers cannot annoy you as much as they annoy Assange, right Snowden?

It's all part of the grand conspiracy then. I don't believe it one bit. I thought this was a thread about Snowden anyway.

limited hangouts

I have noticed that when technical terms like this are used, and the audience (me, and others) have no idea what they mean, and then they keep getting used, the story becomes less believable.

What I'm getting from context is a "limited hangout" is an intelligence agency revealing some, unimportant, details to the public. This is to make the public think that's the whole story. And I guess Snowden is one - okay.

What was always obvious to me was that Snowden was going to be wrong about some pieces of his story. Whatever he knew, it wasn't the complete picture. There's probably more going on than we all heard about, powerpoints and all the rest notwithstanding. None of that detracts from the critical message he tried to push out.

What a great essay.

The data on the disappearance of the jury trial—98 per cent of criminal cases are concluded without one—are dramatic.

If you need a sound bite to know things need improvement, this is your soundbite.

A key weapon in the insider’s toolbox is the “trial tax.” The threats ratchet up the punishment (and/or the promises ratchet up the leniency) as the case moves along. Plead guilty and you get six months (or three, or probation). Go to trial and lose and you will get five years (or ten, or 15).

This is pretty crazy. Most cases are about getting serious damage to your life by receiving several month sentence or a year. Or, you can go to trial and if you lose you'll get a huge sentence. Only a reformer heedless of their own life (and their families) can take this head on.

Oh brother. Fair and balanced report NYT, nicely done /s.

Even worse, they're making me defend Reddit.

Your general counsel said on Monday that there’s a place for President Trump on Reddit. But given how the president has been testing the limits and rules of all the platforms that he’s on, and creating all these headaches for their leaders, do you really want Mr. Trump on Reddit?

Look, nobody wants to be in an echo chamber, right? It’s boring and unhelpful to read a one-sided view of any issue. So we welcome political views across the spectrum. I think Trump’s rhetoric and campaign style is deliberately antagonistic, and that makes it easy to run afoul of our policies. But we have many conservatives on Reddit, and we have Trump supporters on Reddit who are perfectly capable of staying within our rules. And we hope that continues to be the case going forward.

Those are the right words. Actions speak louder than words however.

I dug up an article here https://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/marijuana-dispensaries-pay-with-credit-cards/ that perhaps explains what you're getting. Are you doing the ATM thing described in the article ?

Some dispensaries have ATMs on-site, allowing you to get cash for a terminal fee.

Other dispensaries feature cashless ATMs.

With cashless ATMs, the customer requests, say, $60 from the machine. It spits out a voucher that can be used only at that dispensary. The customer hands the voucher to a clerk, who returns, for the purposes of this illustration, $52.50 worth of product. The customer also is charged taxes and a fee for using the ATM. Whatever is left, the clerk returns in change.

That's certainly possible. How do you know there's no law involved ?

Visa/MC also refuse to do business with the marijuana industry. That's illegal federally but legal in many states. Because it's illegal federally it's against the US banking laws to process payments for marijuana businesses so they CANNOT process those payments. Thus marijuana businesses rely heavily on cash.

If it happens for marijuana, I suspect it can/will happen for other reasons.

I think people have been trying, for years. Credit cards are pretty safe to use for consumers in the sense of fraud, so everyone wants to use the big names. Consumer Credit protection laws worked well and really entrenched them.

Cryptocurrency is one way to break their backs. But it's missing a key component of most currencies - stored value. Playing with Bitcoin is like playing the stock market, not safe.

Everything else seems to fall down and give up. I have read countless stories about this or that payment system that disappear. The latest entrant in the race seems to be Venmo, which might finally catch on with people so addicted to their phones. I don't use it since they desupported use of a computer to access their system. Maybe they'll just sort of fade away like Paypal has - all I see Paypal as today, is something weird I have to use sometimes to get charges onto my credit cards.

Realistically, the way to process payments without Visa/Mastercard is to use cash.

Based on this, it seems like lawyers are not simply permitted to ask jurors about politics. But that's exactly what they want to know about you, as a juror. Based on your politics they know if you'll vote for their client or against him.

The rationale for preemptory challenges is to “allow parties to remove jurors whom they believe, based only on a suspicion, to be biased.”

What a BIG, FAT LIE. Every lawyer uses these things to stack the jury in favor of his side.

I am so glad to hear that. It seems like there's little effort to find common ground in politics, and yet I agree with you - the worst politician is going to support SOMETHING that I would agree with and we can possibly work together to make it happen.

I didn't know any better.

I thought it would be great to learn about things in forums on the internet and talk about issues by banging away on a computer, instead of the messy process of verbally discussing things with real people who would not only not agree with me, but work to change my mind ! They might call me a racist !

It's clear to me now that this is a bad approach. The anonymous nature of the internet has good and bad features. The identified internet such as Facebook and Twitter has a lot of bad features. It's much better to open your mouth and talk with people. You edit yourself better, you're careful to be kind, and the nonverbal portion of communication is huge and 100% missing online, these things notwithstanding :) :P :(

I would love to hear why the news media in general insists on outing pseudonymous people, I have some vague ideas but no first hand knowledge.

This is TERRIBLE news, this was a fantastic blog. Dare I say, the best blog ever written ? Yeah, I think it was. It's that good, and now it's gone.

We're experiencing an experiment - can the existing Reddit be toppled for something better ? Same form and function, but better ruleset ?

All I can vaguely remember about Reddit's beginning were posts about the issues of the day, free speech, computer stuff, and jokes and funny things. None of that was organized around sub-communities as far as I could tell at the time, but they were all there underneath the aggregator software of the site.

Where I see Saidit right now, is ready for actual testing of the aggregator functions to bring interesting stuff to the top. Stuff needs to get that 100 "insights" and "funnies". Maybe that's more people with low participation, or maybe that's a core of people with tons of participation.

Since I don't know I'll just share what I'm trying to do -

  1. Step up and mod community/communities I know I can sustain a long term interest in. Broad is good but niche is OK too. The juggling act is when to create/mod a new community versus participating in the ones we have or which are inactive.
  2. Post as much as feasible HERE instead of The Bad Place. There's no useful social commentary over there but the gaming coverage is top notch. Bet the funny can come over here pretty easy too.
  3. Commit to participating once a day. Small steps in large numbers make a big difference, I'll try to be part of the solution.

One thing on my mind is "fake it til you make it", which apparently is what Reddit did. Staff members posted TONS AND TONS during the early days to get everyone started. Is that needed here or will organic growth and exile drive things forward ?

Welcome ! Please stay. I like your post, you seem like the right kind of person.

Meanwhile the job of being a moderator becomes harder and harder to do, to the point where it is not surprising that mods of major subreddits are extremely invested into the site compared to normal users.

Well stated. I wonder what could happen that would ameliorate this problem. People smarter than me have certainly been trying to figure that one out.

Nice essay, thanks for sharing.

I think business restrictions tend to favor very large businesses and the existing ones. Whatever regulation would ensue after extending the first amendment to websites, would work to prevent the creation of "The New Saidit" or whatever, and instead ensure Reddit/Facebook/Twitter keep out rivals.

I'm more interested in re-establishing the culture of free speech. Vicious people with virtual bats are waiting to smack you around if you say the wrong thing. Somehow that needs to change.

I will never forget the first time I saw this in action.

The Los Angeles CA area has a subreddit, and very few republican congressmen left. The Democratic party identified one who they could defeat, and decided to work extra hard (spend extra money etc) to defeat this guy.

The subreddit suddenly gets a picture of this Republican, with a title showing unsubstantiated nonsense. It's not even a meme - just a picture of the guy. It's all about the stuff they put in the title, to smear him and get people to vote for the other guy. And from the time I last checked the subreddit (1 am) - no picture posted - to getting into the office (6 am) - the picture has the most upvotes of all time in the subreddit.

It was clearly a phony account getting mass machine upvotes, but it got people super riled up about the congressman and tons of comments from regular posters. Nobody wanted to hear me when I said "Hey something's wrong here".

Same thing OP is mentioning, but this is literally politics.

Reddit shut them down.

They didn't do it by closing the sub to posting, instead, they did the death by admin pressure. First it was quarantined for sketchy reasons, then they decided they were going to remove all the admins.

Removing the existing admins, for admins vetted by the Reddit administrators, was too much for the current admins who locked the whole subreddit down thus achieving what spez wanted anyway.

I never liked the subreddit but the chilling effect on political and free speech is glaringly obvious and made me furious.

White judges, jurors are complicit in police use of excessive force by ManWithABanana in juryduty

[–]ManWithABanana[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

First, fuck off with this "white jurors" thing.

The violence we are seeing now is the predictable result of prosecutors, judges and jurors usurping justice. If we want to prevent social unrest, it would be helpful if we allow justice. That would require ending both the biased rulings by activist judges and the excuses prosecutors make for their failure to prosecute. It will also require a pervasive change in the attitude of people towards police who inflict violence.

This is the problem as I see it.

  • Someone shadowbanned you for something you did. You not only were not informed you committed a crime, you were judged and sentenced without any opportunity for defense. The technology industry has a need for some kind of due process system to prevent this.

  • I hope you're not terrified. Can't you just make a new account (as annoying as that is) and use that instead ?

Title of the article :

Potatoes and World History

The fun factoid included -

In 1992, U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle was visiting an elementary school in New Jersey when a 12-year-old boy was asked to write “potato” on a chalk board. Quayle “corrected” the youngster by telling him the word has an “e” on the end of it. It doesn’t.

Seems Quayle got a bad rap over this one. It's easy to see the word written plural and think it would be singular just by removing the "S". I can't think of another word that behaves like this one does.

[–]ManWithABanana 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's true, but look at it long term.

When the loans the Fed is making are repaid, the net effect to the economy was zero.

When the treasuries are purchased, you put money back into lenders hands to lend out to whatever needy cause, and you reduce the public debt. This benefit is offset to some degree by the inflationary printing of money you noted.

Compare that to paying off student loans. That is an action that prints money and gives it away from the Fed, free and clear, to benefit the students drowning in debt. The Fed neither gets the money back nor reduces public debt. But it should also stimulate the economy to some degree since you put so much money in consumers pockets.

Man, economics is crazy.

The judge determined that Turner had lied on a jury questionnaire when asked whether he ever had been arrested, charged with a crime or convicted of one; Turner had listed only “improper handling of a firearm.”

Prosecutors checked and found that Turner’s record also included two domestic violence arrests, plus charges including assault and disorderly conduct. When he was questioned directly in court, Turner repeatedly denied ever having been arrested on a domestic violence charge.

With that, plus the conversation the police cruiser dashcam captured, it sounds like this guy was trying very hard to get on the jury and find the defendant not guilty; a so called stealth juror.
