Yes, that's the thing with RSS. What you call RSS+ is RSS Bridge (in fact, it is actually the name of the code used for that). Instead of reaching out for the readily available RSS from the website, a server is setup to pull data from website, parse it and make an RSS feed out of it according to configuration (that could certainly be filtered by upvotes and such). And like I said, it should be soon possible to just use html2rss as a program instead of having to setup a server, so there would be no need to have a 3rd party server for more advanced users. It can already be done with Docker on computer, but it isn't as easy to setup as a simple software, although Docker is quite simple to use. I don't know if RSS can be used to pull information from a logged in account (for instance, RSS from a private subsaidit). Haven't looked that up.

I think it would be great to make an easy and affordable setup with clear almost foolproof instructions to launch a simple communication and file sharing server but I don't know if it is realistic to expect people to do something useful with that.

Exactly. That's defenitely true that people won't all change their habits (although this is an important matter here and not just when it comes to technology) and RSS isn't as easy as browsing. It requires some planning. But yeah, any of these decentralized website possibly already have RSS or at least they don't actively prevent RSS (I suppose, I don't see why they would do that). There's already bridge service that can create RSS feed on top of a website that doesn't have it. It would be possible to make filters with these technologies (it probably already exist, it isn't really hard to do). Will play around with that this winter.

[–]JoGooD 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I think the most interesting step for everyone right now is to start using RSS. It is an older technology that might be even more meaningful now than it was before. RSS is like getting news (like mainstream news, blog, rebate, forum post, etc) without having to navigate to the website. In short, it gives much more control over what we want to see and more organized. No more unwanted ads or articles. Of course there can be caveats, like website doesn't have RSS, or even worse, the website fight against it, but there's a lot that can be bypassed by hosting or using someone's service to make force RSS over any web page (and I think it will be possible to do that soon without server).

RSS could easily be used as some kind of FaceBook wall where each one get news from website of people they actually want to get news from (and not being forced to get news choosen by some mysterious shady crap).

Yeah!

By owning our own website, even if it is hosted on some mainstream host that may do censorship, it is quite cheap, easy to do and we can keep getting news from each other with RSS. That would be kinda like having Facebook, except we're all in charge of the news we see from the RSS feed of site we subscribe to. I am currently thinking about ways to expand that. It might already be out there waiting to be used.

Anyway, I'll comeback with more guidance for that later once I've done my research on the subject. Beside, making a website and setting up RSS nowaday is easy and cheap (as long as you choose the right services and don't pay for useless crap).

I think he is using the wrong metric to "calculate" the worth of FOSS. Money is one thing. Like probably everyone here and like said in this article, we live under some kind of system that works on money and tax. Sure if the goal is to "finance" something properly, it does seem like private is more successful. Although it does fail to mention that there is so many failure on that end too, unsuccessful startup, scammers, etc. Like, could someone please tell my government to stop giving "tax" money to make bad softwares and stupid websites that doesn't do anything useful? And what is that bit about thief is thief? We're all gonna pretend that living on earth is ethical? We don't call ourselves thieves only because we're able to protect our stuff. If we weren't able, then we would probably have a better conception of thievery.

Anyway, FOSS has its own very important metric: Freedom. I'm sure that a computer with Linux OS will be one of the richest ressources one can have on earth within the next decade or so. FOSS will be one of the most important way to gather power. Without freedom, we're powerless. Being able to control our own computer is an incredible ressource. But we're so acquainted in having many of them loaded with well working bloating spyware and programmed obsolescence that it doesn't seem great. Electronic computers aren't even 100 years old . An empire is being built but most people don't see it because not so many people get to learn programming and using Linux system mostly because it is quite new to humanity. We're in charge of this virtual empire, but a lot of works need to be done to keep that.

Le jouvencel summary:

Le Jouvencel is one of the most important and revealing sources for the study of medieval warfare and chivalry. It tells the story of a poor young soldier whose skill at arms enables him to rise through the ranks and eventually marry a foreign princess. Jean de Bueil (1406-1477 wrote the book around 1466, following his retirement from military service, drawing heavily upon his own experiences as one of the most prominent French soldiers of the fifteenth century. The pages of Le Jouvencel are filled with unusually detailed descriptions of military campaigns, sieges and battles, capturing the tactics, weapons and everyday life of the soldier with a vivid eye for detail. Many of the characters, places and events described in the apparently fictional story were actually inspired by recent history, as was revealed in a Commentary written just a few years after Bueil's death by one of his squires, Guillaume Tringant.

Jean de Bueil wrote Le Jouvencel to provide future generations of soldiers and military leaders with advice on chivalry, knighthood and the art of warfare. As a result, this remarkable chivalric narrative offers a window into the martial culture of French soldiers during the final stages of the Hundred Years War. This first English translation is presented with an introduction to the text and to Jean de Bueil, and explanatory notes.

The first step is to avoid private free services such as Google, Facebook, Reddit, etc. These are not free, it is like we are playing a chess game and they get to know what we are thinking.

Then, switch to Linux. Microsoft, Apple... do I need to say anything about these? Sure, Linux is not as userfriendly for computer noobs, but freedom is embeded in it.

Next is to contribute to different kind of project. We need to replace search engine. There's search engine that we can use with our own index (like SearX), there's paid search engine (like Infinity Search). These are examples, not recommendations. The point is that we got to own the things we use, otherwise it is not ours, which mean we don't get to choose how it works. Internet is like our planet, it is being conquered by people. If we don't own a part of it, then we will be tossed out, enslaved or whatever.

Just use Linux. Microsoft will eventually lock computer so we can't install any other operating system on it. Linux is the futur, I really wish I did the change earlier. You can boot Linux from a USB key to try it on your computer to see if everything work or check out if you are able to install everything properly. A few tips:

  • Start with Ubuntu, especially if your a computer noob.

  • If, for some reason, you cannot connect to internet, you can use a cell phone that you plug in the computer (as if you were charging) and then allow USB thetering and share wifi so you can install the needed driver to get internet.

  • Some beginner friendly tutorial (a linux journey).

  • Your favorite search engine is your friend. If your able to search properly, you should be able to solve most problems.

  • I recommend to have at least 3 hours to spend on using linux before thinking about using it for your regular computer task to properly get into it.

You're pretty much at the bottom of the pyramid of arguing by calling me name. I believe you're a troll so I'm just going to reference what I can find back:

Media bring up shit on people. I don't know where you were during the last 2 years, this has been on repeat everywhere around the world. Suddenly, there's crazy scientist everywhere that are willing to loose a lot for holding their point.

Patrick Provost, Biochemist: CBC shilling article

They've censored the original article of Patrick Provost and I can't find it right now but I remember it was quite soft. It was mostly about government mismanagement, not so much about vaccine danger. About children vaccination, even our pandemic thing institution (I don't know what they are exactly) wasn't able to recommend it. They've made a document saying it wasn't clear if vaccination for children was worth it. And this is a government institution.

I don't know how to translate properly terminal but yea, kinda like in airport. I believe they will put them up this year, so it shouldn't be too long to get a good picture of that.

Most of the healthcare staff already caught it during the crisis. Very few died of covid here from what I've read back in 2020. So why get rid of healthy staff during a crisis? If they get sick, it can't get worse than not being there at all. If the vaccine really does something, at least, this staff will be less likely to spread the disease, since it doesn't prevent contagion at all and (assuming it is true, which I'm convince it isn't) that the vaccine prevent being too sick of covid, making them more likely to really get sick, thus more easy to isolate. Sure I don't manage hospitals and stuff, but there is certainly no reason to completely get rid of healthy nurses and threaten them without salary when they've served the country during a crisis. This is complete non sens to gaslight people when it is a key moment to try to help each other and keep it as peaceful as possible. Machiavel right here (divide and conquer).

I suggest you to look up for scientist opposing all of this. There's many. There's possibly many in them that are controlled opposition which is a way to control dissents with fake opposition, but I don't know whom so that's why you should look for many. I'm sure you can find some on Saiddit. That's it for me. Like I said, I believe your a troll so I'm done.

Yes, that is exactly what they have done to scientist who've spoke up. They bring up shit (even lies) to bully them, censor and threathen them. There's been another one (biochemist) recently at a local university here who've got suspended without salary for writing an article telling that the government is responsible for many death. He still haven't kissed government's ass so far to get back his job. There's a couple of doctors who spoke a little bit and did kiss govmernment's ass to get back their job. There aren't many strong people nowaday.

I don't know what you're doing on SaidIt thinking that vaccine have been safe and effective. Where I live, they've built terminals for vaccine passport. I've got bullied for talking about those back in 2020. A year later, there's been information and pictures about these passport terminals being built. This is not democracy, I wasn't free of speaking about very important society matter. And it wasn't the only thing. Almost everything against this scam has been mocked. There's been plenty of scientist who've brought problems with the management of this crisis. But medias keep dividing people with crap like abortion when we just went fully against human rights, very important stuff like medical consent. Justin Trudeau even said something about women should always have the choice over their bodies... but allowed medical institutions to fire nurses during what is supposed to be the worse medical crisis since a 100 years, making things even worse since there was already lack of staff even before the crisis. All of this doesn't hold up in any way. There is an agenda behind this. I don't know exactly what is up with that injection, but it does kill some people, it does make some people sick and it really looks like it sterelize people (I guess it is too soon to say for sure). Not like it is the first time people are being sterelized against their will. It has happened in different countries, I think mostly in Africa, but what do I know. I know about that time in Chile where they've sent sterelizing syringe to offer to people just like that. What happened next is it has been used on people (indigenous people) against their will when they visited the clinic for other reasons. It is a gift from the UN if I remember correctly. And what about stuff like MK-Ultra? Did you know the US government did all sort of illegal experiment on honest citizens? Torture, drug, stuff like that. Then the government of Canada financed it to replicate here. They've turned a child into a sex slave for "our security". Because Russian might be able to do mind control or something like that. After World War II, I don't see why I would have to trust anything from big corporation. Bayer did sold HIV blood knowingly everywhere. How many medical scam there's been? There's many (officially speaking, but many more hidden obviously, why would they get caught everytime?) but somehow you still believe in the medical institution in power.

We've been taught to be very individualist, making us powerless. It seems very hard to reverse that. If only there was some way to teach people that power is something we hold together, it would be great. Doing it is another step. Business is kind of that, but it would be better if people just worked together for their own communities instead of giving it all to the bigger thing. No need to be fully out of the system. As for fascism and communism, these are different ways of ruling people. I'm sure plenty of people have been happy with those regime.

Where I live (Quebec), they've added more cops to chase weed dealers when it became "legal", watching dispenseries. But that's just organized crimes like it always has been. Some politician come up with that "great idea" to "legalize" weed, now many people think this is a great politician and forget about all the honest people who fought for real for the legalization and got into real trouble. And they didn't even relieve previous charges from honest citizens who got caught selling when it was "illegal". It took me long enough to figure out that this was actually bad. They just decided that they could mistreat very honest citizen because they do competition to big pharma (and likely other reasons, since it is still illegal to grow our own). But people keep reading the news not realizing how shitty our society is. There's still a lot of rumors of cops stealing weed plant too.

diddnt know it takes years to make sure compost is safe

It applies to hummanure. And it is probably not that much worrying since humanure have been around for a very long time while it seems like something new because it has become a taboo and there is also a big business behind toilet industry. I mean, I can make a toilet for ~50 canadian dollars with brand new material. It would defenitely be possible to get free material to make it, it is so simple.

I highly recommend permies.com for all sort of stuff like what I said above.

I garden and grow fruits. I'm using permaculture techniques and all sort of things. Did you know you can make good fertilizer just by throwing stuff in a water bucket? Look it up for more details (liquid fertilizer), simply adding plants and water then wait 2 weeks. Some people even throw fish parts and other stuff. The only downside is the smell. Beside that, it is much better than the powder they sell that is probably made of animal urine (you can also use your own, just dilute by 1 to 6 water). I've also started vermicomposting. Quite eazy and no need to buy worm, just need to find a hundred or so and they will multiply quite fast as long as they got plenty of space.

I am learning woodworking skills. From green, fine to more industrial woodworking, lumber processing, etc. I really like bushcraft for its simplicity. Just need a very few tool set and a lot can be done. Some tool recommendation: Mora Companion, Hultafor trekking axe, Zubat and Katanaboy zilky saw and a couple of bahco bow saw blade (24 inch+) to make your own wooden bow saw with some paracord.

On top of that, I am also doing a lot of networking online and in person, it is well worth it. I believe the most important thing right now is to start doing a lot of transaction (whatever the currency is, trading, crypto, money, other kind of trading system) with people.

I cook food. I also do canning, I highly recommend printing the USDA canning guide. I try to identify plants around to do foraging. There are so many, most I use to make herbal teas.

I highly recommend starting waste management. The Humanure hanbook from Jenkin explain how to shit in a bucket to make compost. No need to read the full book. Basicly, get a bucket, throw wood shaving in then shit and pee in it (don't go just to pee, I think). Add wood shaving, it shouldn't smell. Once the bucket is full, there are different ways to go for, but in simple, empty in a bigger bucket. Once this bigger bucket is full, let it sit for at least a year, 2 if you want to make sure everything is fine. Then start filling another big bucket.

Have to finish reading it, but just by taking a peek, this seems pretty much like what I think about it. And it also applies to the "pandemic", which is some kind of world war. And it can't be more obvious with these rules that protect big pharma against lawsuit. Like war industries, it is going to be citizen who will pay for the ressources and the damages that has been done.

It's mostly not original content even when it looks like it. On reddit, I was "debating" with someone about some right issue. The "other user" simply took some of my sentences and added some non sens answer to it. It was basicly the following: We (everyone) are unworthy, ttrust the "expert", we don't matter so we deserve to be limited, etc. I responded a lot of message and this "person" kept responding similar stuff about an hour after I replied. I think it had been over a week. I was kinda shock to see that much dedication (even though this was low value content) on a single user. Could also have been some kind of bot, hard to tell, but there's many of them and they don't act the same. And there are (probably) clueless people mixed in answering stupid stuff. Some of these potentially clueless people are probably less then 16 years old. Or these can be other shills that reply dumb stuff.

I'm from Quebec and it is sort of similar on the Quebec reddit. I am convinced that this subreddit is owned by a political party (Option National) and is using censorship to its advantage. I've also heard some of the 2 moderators made false claim on another user about an ongoing investigation. This user apparently had real problem with officers (don't recall what exactly) and didn't get anything in return for these false accusation, only got problems. They ban people with different political ideas for "being rude" but they let people who started being rude in the first place when they agree with them (like most other popular sub).

PETA is being hated by pop culture... so I would assume they are not enemies. And yes, killing animals is saving animals. If you don't agree with that, then why aren't you working in a shelter? There's too many wandering animals suffering and it will only keep growing if they are not handled properly. Since almost no one want to care for these lost animals, there isn't much to be done. And people got to remember that domestic animals aren't wild animals, most of them can't survive living in the wild. The best example is the domesticated cow. We genetically selected an animal that serve no other purpose than to be a prey, they are docile, super fat without much defense beside their horns.

It is simple, work!

I believe the most important to do right now to to establish trading with people. Most people no longer rely on each other, most of our needs rely on big corps, not on people. No wonder that we see so many people hating each other so easily, people have lost respect because they don't depend on each other. There's a lot to do and we're likely able to get something great if we gather all the competent people and start working together. It is not easy work, but at least life start to make sens. We need to stop fearing and limiting ourselves because of some people saying weird stuff and pretending that someting or someone can control everything.

The same question remain,

Why so many people keep wasting a lot of time reading news while (at least, most people here) we are all aware that we are intentionally misinformed?

I believe the answer is lazyness. But I'm not totally sure, because in my opinion, once you start connecting with people around, doing actual stuff like gardening, trading goods and service, networking (in person and on the internet), life start to make sens and it will only be helpful to deal with all the coming problem. Criticizing society won't do anything good, it won't bring bread on your table and it will unlikely help to make meaningful relationships.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that it is time to work and encourage people to do something and stop worrying about the world.
