I would support a lot of sites and organizations if it were possible to do so truly anonymously. The fact is, in 2020, having a record like a cc statement showing that you support the right, or even something which should be uncontroversial, like a free speech website, could make you a target of retaliation at some point.

In my opinion, it will be easier to support organizations in (or after) a second Trump term, so they should have a survival strategy for another couple of years which doesn't depend on a massive increase in donations.

I'll speculate a bit.

It seems an observable fact that people in rural communities don't act independently until they are personally threatened.

However, awareness is quite high, and this is generating a lot of nervous energy which could be focused if the messaging were there and a credible leader stepped up to give direction.

Currently that leader is Donald Trump, and the nervous energy is focused on November. Personally I think it will be a decisive win for DJT. But it's worth thinking about what happens if he does in fact lose, or if the election is competently stolen from him (same thing effectively).

General Flynn has already written a letter that shows he knows the deal. The letter put people on notice that the time to act to defend the republic may come soon. I don't know what the circulation on that letter was, but thusly primed "patriots" in rural communities might step up if explicitly instructed by a trusted figure what to do, where to go, what to bring, and what to expect. Flynn has kind of positioned himself to be such a person.

On the other hand, DJT might get his second term, he might dismantle the organized crime syndicate that controls washington, a majority of citizens may find a renewed patriotism given all the country has gone through with the marxists and all, and a field of new-conservative up-and-comers in the molds of Josh Hawley and Mike Gaetz may find success at the polls. If this is the country I wish it were.

IIUC, saidit is "free speech"-friendly in that the admins of the site will not censor you. That doesn't mean individual communities on the site can't kick you out.

The other side of "free speech" is "freedom not to listen". Your recourse is to join another community which you find more friendly, or start a community of your own.

The reddit software (which saidit runs) is not optimized for dealing with this situation. Reddit wants to force users to moderate content with votes instead of blocking users.

On a free speech site it should be easy to block users you don't want to interact with.

This is something Gab got right. There are users on Gab that endlessly post nazi stuff or use slurs in every post, but it's easy to block them. It does not take long at all until your feed contains content you're comfortable with. I am personally surprised that it works so well, so fast.

I think saidit should tweak this codebase a bit and put a "block" option next to every username. The other side of the "free speech" coin is the freedom to not listen if you don't want to - without compromising others' ability to listen.

It is fascinating (and of course terrifying) to see the oligarchy control the masses with the media like a snake-charmer with a flute, in real time.

On the bright side, they might be going for broke now because their hold on the media is fracturing and they only see themselves getting less powerful as time goes on.

Interesting times, no doubt about it.
