But the ban wave came

And ruined her game

Now our sailor from Moon

Writes fun poems at noon

And shares them with lezziez on saidit

David Attenborough voice: here is the lesbian in her natural habitat, among trees and rivers deftly conquering the wild landscape. Her confident gaze and short nails signal her unavailability to men and her attire further confirms her interest in women: a subtle balance between practicality and lesbian fashion.

Women who long, love and lust Women who give This is the way It’s the way that we live

"I want to believe" (insert X-Files music) that it is possible for two adults to transcend age difference and find some sort of equality. But they would have to be some extraordinarily wholesome people - very very rare. Or they just transform their dynamic into something positive for both - again, rare.

As to the tendency in the creative industries to insert unequal power dynamics in lesbian relationships to appeal to heterosexual sensibilities of dominant and dominee - I vote against. Remains to be seen how this movie spins it.

Oh that project has a long history, as anything in Hollywood.

The first draft Ellen wrote with Julliane Moore and it was called "The Burning Bush" - a reference to literal burning bushes, but also to female desire and independence suffering under patriarchy throughout the ages (the vagina monologues kind of bush :)).

The play is about Mother Earth (Miriam Margolyes - a lesbian icon) awakening and avenging the sufference of women through bush fires and other climate disasters. A group of female tutant minge-a turtles led by Ellen Page try to bring peace between humanity and crazed Mother Earth through the media of cappuccinos, world travel and documentaries.

But they had to abandon this idea because of the pivotal scene where Mother Earth's bush (masses of long curly hair sown onto the pelvic area of a pink onesie) literally catches fire. The prop department messed up one day and Miriam almost joined the real goddesses in the beyond. :)

I haven't seen the second and final version of the play. Perhaps other people here can enlighten us both. ;)

That's a great one - thank you! Some ebook shopping is in order.

Not that anybody wants to know, but the hotest scenes from the whole series to me are when they show Ann Walker's face at the moment Anne Lister "goes in". Them eyes close, them fine eyebrows go up and the whole face shines out a sort of wondrous pleasure. There's a word for that - beatitude. And there are those barely audible moans she does, that are just... Ughhhhhh

One word - lakes. Get that woman into a boat, grab onto the paddles. As you sail on, so does the conversation. Her eyes will catch the reflection of light on water, so will yours, you will feel the need to quote a Shakesperean sonnet, she will complete it and Boom - you're married!

On a serious note: a hike sounds great! It lets the conversation flow and generally predisposes to a great mood for weeks.

Good point!

So first we need to suss out if she is of lesbionic persuasion. Try to have a handshake to check out length of nails before asking any of the below questions:

  1. Has slender Aphrodite ever overcome you with longing for a girl?
  2. Do you like fried green tomatoes? Quickly followed by:
  3. Are you a "bee charmer"?
  4. What's your favorite KD Lang/Melissa Etheridge/Tegan and Sara/Hayley Kiyoko song?

If the above, or variations on the above don't work ask:

5.Are you a homosexual?

I think ultimately her answer will not be that interesting because it's her life and I don't want to dig into it. What is interesting is how we got into this mess in the first place - the history of thought (logical fallacy, more like). I'm reading Monique Wittig's "The Straight Thought" now. The Monique Wittig who said "lesbians are not women" and who wanted to abolish the categories of sex (not even gender) . She is also the one who inspired Judith Butler's "Gender Trouble" - the great troubler of normativity :).

So far I can say that it's like talking to a PhD student who's taken mushrooms for the first time and chased them down with a few tequila shots. There's some good stuff there, but it's swimming under a sea of barf as Strictly would say. I might come back with a post on it if my small brain will be able to gauge the greatness of her thoughts.

PS: this post is mainly in the hope that better minds than mine can start a thread on the history of queer theory and the role of lesbians in it, because it seems lesbians have started this effing mess.

"The Fluid Exchange" could be a great name for a lesbian erotica flick taking place on the floor of some stock exchange or other with the main characters being two hotshot brokers.

Amid shouts of "Buy" and "Sell" one of them sexily lowers her glasses upon noticing the other, they lock eyes, cue 80s sexy music and cut to shiny thighs rubbing against each other...

Also everybody in the flick has German accents and there should be a third character - a lesbian Tommy Wiseau that will be left out of the action and leaves the scene by the third act crying "You're tearing me apart Lisaaa!".

Ahahaha 😂 The kind of stuff that is so bad that it's funny to watch!

Well it was a laugh! And even though I struggled with following the translation in some places the jocular tone still came through. I particularly enjoyed the play on class (as in the dreamy impractical rich girl vs the practical earner lesbian) and on stereotypes (the party loving girl). But they do subvert some of the stereotypes - the macho torreador father turns out to be the more accepting one, the imperious, ice cold mother turns out to be more party loving etc. While all the characters are a riot, my favorite plot thread was with the two older women - the singers. That romance came as a great, all be it slightly over the top twist.

But then again, over the top, sunny and funny is the spirit of the entire film.

Really appreciate your reply. I suppose I'll dive in with Wild at Heart. Nic Cage and Laura Dern in it is another win :).

Because of time constraints, I suppose Twin Peaks will be perfect for when I'm confined to bed with a terrible cold (October usually does it), or please God No - coronavirus. Although I confess I'm tempted, particularly because you gave an outline and it's nice to know what one is getting into.

I've seen Elephant Man as a kid. That ending is just heart-rending. The fact that Lynch chose that particular story to tell and that he once said that Kafka is the only artist worth bothering with, points to what is great about his work. He's trying to reach the human, the universal, through the marginal, the bizarre and yes, at times the grotesque. Because we in some ways live marginal lives (all with being homos :)) his work can make an individual's weirdness seem part and parcel of the fabric of humanity, or at least the blue key (couldn't resist :) ) to that humanity.

"teaching" the male character how to be a person and have a conversation, WHY do women always have to fill this role

I recently had an epiphany related to this. My favorite fairy tale as a kid was Beauty and the Beast and only now I got some of its message (better late than never, lol).

I think it's an allegory of the woman's prescribed role in the marriage. She is supposed to civilize her husband, make his life more beautiful and less beastly, if you will. The same idea was expressed by the Greek philosophers, and way before them I'm sure. So we are right to be miffed.

Regarding the love-making scene, particularly the finger going into the armpit. What did you guys think?

I went bananas for a moment cause I didn't twig it was an armpit 😂 all I saw was an orifice and a finger going in!

Edit: I should specify I was watching on the phone (horrible, I know). I was travelling at the time with no access to a computer and no patience to get to one :).

Ahh, this three bedroom situation is indeed a dream. I sense a trend. Perhaps we could use it as an identifier on dating apps:

"If you like three-bedroom apartments, and getting caught in the rain, If you're not into yoga, If you're into champagne , If you like making love at midnight, In the dunes on the cape, I'm the love that you've looked for, Write to me and escape"

In advance apologies to people tired of cheesy dating app profiles (I'm not on apps so don't know that world) , I just couldn't resist - the song was bursting out of me. :)

Canoes, yes 😂, regular boats are less capricious, I find.

You bring a fantastic point: nobody should marry before going through the crucible of building an IKEA item together. :)

Good to have you back. :)

As far as I'm concerned, everybody putting their life on hold in big ways right now is already dead on the inside.

That's the loudest "Carpe diem" I've heard in a while lol

I've thought some more about it and from this flirting scale I'm definetly a 2. 😂

  1. I like your shoes (I knew a guy using this as an ice-breaker each and every time :))

  2. Hi, I hope this isn't too forward, but I'd like to have coffee with you sometime. Here's my number, you're under no obligation to ring. (confidently smiles while gracefully backing away)

  3. Hey gorgeous, when do you get off work? I know a nice place where we can go.

No, but seriously ppl, do you have some nice ice-breakers?

Why, I didn't know it's the same family. Thanks! With this new info I've quite gone off the idea. And anyway, I think they belong in the wild.

Make/repair- sit-collect - in that order. :)

I have friends and relatives who have been receiving chairs for Xmas for a while and who implore me not to supply them any more four-legged creations, so I've slowed down for a few years - hence the full shed. :)

I like fixing broken things around the house. It often happens that they end up more broken than I found them, but I'm getting better at it.

Chairs... I have a lot of weird chairs in the shed. That shed looks positively haunted at this point :)

How dare you :) No, but seriously the mods worked hard to grow and keep TL, then they worked hard to organize and promote this place. And there are great people on here. These spaces don't just spring up like mushrooms after the rain, they take investment from good people and contribution from us to exist.

Stereotypes of lesbians that are true and not true? by IamWomanHearMeRoar in Lesbians

[–]Innisfree 10 insightful - 3 fun10 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

My every weekend is spent DIY-ing, playing guitar, going camping (when I can) and taking motorcycle driving lessons to join the ranks of dykes on bikes. If that's stereotypical - I love it! Also about an hour ago I discovered I enjoy plumbing (occasioned by a blocked drain). Cue plumbing jokes... Lol

That sounds so cool - the horse rescue part, not the crazy equestrians. As a kid I was obsessed with working at a horse rescue. What is it with lesbians and horses anyway, do we all read "Black beauty", or is it the independence and beauty they inspire? :-)

Getting ready for spooky season. What are your favorite horror movies? by [deleted] in Lesbians

[–]Innisfree 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Back in 2001. Yeah it was a while ago. Sorry, I cling to dates, to remind myself how far we are from the 90s :)

I remember sitting around for hours (days?) afterwards discussing it with other people online trying to figure it out.

What's the German word for nostalgia for things one did not experience :)

It does take away from the joy of cinema going - all this abundance of takes online. I went into the film only knowing it's about an actress and dreams. Spent a day of trying to puzzle it out. Then went online and read the one sentence that it's about Diane's dream. Was disappointed and decided not to read further, because I want the experience of puzzling out how it all connects.

As to my interpretation that it could be Bettys' dream - I don't think it works because then Lynch's critique of the myth of Hollywood is not as sharp. So, it's just my optimistic indulgence/amusement.

Right now I am thinking of the blue box. Pandora's box of dreams and fears. I think the 'tramp' and the box together represent fear. Or the dark side of human nature. Sometimes, it is fun to be wrong :D

So yeah, cheers for sharing your slice of the experience. I wonder if you watched anything else by Lynch and if so what would you recommend - closer to Mulholland Drive?

Yes. First time (oh the shame lol) ! I'm sort of still there.. I don't know where I am. But I love sometimes deciding that the second half was Betty's dream and sometimes, that the first half was Diane's.

Edit: excited sharing. But I wanted to add, I geniuenly mentioned processing in the hope that you'll share your thoughts on it, had an inkling you might have seen it :)

The Shining - that opening shot and the music are spooky season openers for me.

Not horror per se but i watched yesterday Mulholland Drive. I want to rewatch it and find somebody to process it with. I really liked Room with Brie Larson, but no going back there anytime soon.

Re-watched and re-appreciated. Besides again agreeing with your reading, all i can say is i re-appreciated Sidse's acting and the fact that her character had to stay so well hydrated throughout the film Lol

On a side note. Peter Strickland, the writer and director, said sth that i found to be true while watching: he tried to make a tender film about relationship dynamics, rather than a specific practice (your reading, spot on). He tried not condemning the characters, but also look with humour and empathy at some of the excesses - "the things we do for love".

It's certainly unhealthy. But I enjoyed the complexity with which the dynamic was portrayed. It's sparse on dialogue and evocative - good combo. I'll rewatch though and get back with my pensées :)

Brill reading. Don't know how i retrospectively managed to erase the sad ending from my mind. I suppose i focused too much on the irony of the whole situation. Specifically, that the one who was the sub in the roleplay was, like you say, the one who controlled the relationship dynamics. And her manipulative side - scary stuff!

And if you extrapolate the bdsm roles to just regular roles we play in relationships in order to please our partners, it shows how you can sacrifice your happiness and lose your sense of self when the person who is your entire world desires different things than you do.

That's a great way to summarise the message of the movie. I appreciate it even more now. Because at the time it also rung some bells for me and mapped out a minefield for future relationships. After watching it i remember being less willing to redraw my boundaries. Useful. Perhaps a rewatch is in order it's been 6 years already, wow. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Highly recommend to anyone in a new relationship or just out of one because - see pixel's post.

Edit: missed a word

Yes and yes. You're like some lesbian Santa showering us with gifts. Everybody should get on the Garofalo nostalgia train with us. Y'all watch this scene if in doubt.

Wynona be hot. They did look like the perfect lesbian couple. So much so that now in my mind I'm rewriting the dialogue to some sweet lesbian domestic bickering. Janeane wins, because deadpan, and they get to play the "Who touches first" game during sex. I went too far, too far... :)

Deadpan is a superpower. Mate, I'd be surprised you didn't have stalkers a-la Buckskin. I hope not, but wouldn't be surprised.

When Janeane disappeared from the limelight (end of '90s?) " I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices were suddenly silenced." I am glad you are keeping her brand of deadpan alive :)
