Full trailer for the lesbian Christmas movie "Happiest Season" (starring Kirsten Stewart) just dropped! by [deleted] in Lesbians

Looking forward to it. Can't help thinking that the film will be less Hallmarky than the trailer presents it to be. Maybe I just need Clea to come up with a sequel: Darkness in Suburbia, where Kristen Stewart is lured and trapped in that rich family's closet. But Jordan Peele did it better with Get Out already lol

[–]Innisfree 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Well it was a laugh! And even though I struggled with following the translation in some places the jocular tone still came through. I particularly enjoyed the play on class (as in the dreamy impractical rich girl vs the practical earner lesbian) and on stereotypes (the party loving girl). But they do subvert some of the stereotypes - the macho torreador father turns out to be the more accepting one, the imperious, ice cold mother turns out to be more party loving etc. While all the characters are a riot, my favorite plot thread was with the two older women - the singers. That romance came as a great, all be it slightly over the top twist.

But then again, over the top, sunny and funny is the spirit of the entire film.

[–]Innisfree 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There are people who turned their phobias into something lucrative. I'm thinking of Guillermo de Toro who as a kid was absolutely terrified of the idea of monsters and overcame it by becoming friends with them (creatively). A couple of movies later - he's successful and well-off.

I've tried that with post-soviet tax admin officials, all I got was more bills. :)

Really appreciate your reply. I suppose I'll dive in with Wild at Heart. Nic Cage and Laura Dern in it is another win :).

Because of time constraints, I suppose Twin Peaks will be perfect for when I'm confined to bed with a terrible cold (October usually does it), or please God No - coronavirus. Although I confess I'm tempted, particularly because you gave an outline and it's nice to know what one is getting into.

I've seen Elephant Man as a kid. That ending is just heart-rending. The fact that Lynch chose that particular story to tell and that he once said that Kafka is the only artist worth bothering with, points to what is great about his work. He's trying to reach the human, the universal, through the marginal, the bizarre and yes, at times the grotesque. Because we in some ways live marginal lives (all with being homos :)) his work can make an individual's weirdness seem part and parcel of the fabric of humanity, or at least the blue key (couldn't resist :) ) to that humanity.

I can't 😂. Stroke of genius with the musical chairs and The Office analogies!

Putin can take the day off and touch up his Botox and fillers because America, Canada, the UK, etc. have identified themselves out of power.

That's the reason for that sly knowing smile he wears all the time. He plays this point that the west is soft - so often.

You know how the press likes to compare today's time with the '30s in Europe, I heard one historian say that it's actually more like after the invention of the Gutenberg press. The information and misinformation spread with unprecedented speed - which, in part, contributes to 'softness'. I suppose we can only hope that the next stage is a backlash from our poor beleaguered skeptics and empiricists.

While Putin and the West do their thing, quietly and steadily stuff goes on in Africa and China.

Back in 2001. Yeah it was a while ago. Sorry, I cling to dates, to remind myself how far we are from the 90s :)

I remember sitting around for hours (days?) afterwards discussing it with other people online trying to figure it out.

What's the German word for nostalgia for things one did not experience :)

It does take away from the joy of cinema going - all this abundance of takes online. I went into the film only knowing it's about an actress and dreams. Spent a day of trying to puzzle it out. Then went online and read the one sentence that it's about Diane's dream. Was disappointed and decided not to read further, because I want the experience of puzzling out how it all connects.

As to my interpretation that it could be Bettys' dream - I don't think it works because then Lynch's critique of the myth of Hollywood is not as sharp. So, it's just my optimistic indulgence/amusement.

Right now I am thinking of the blue box. Pandora's box of dreams and fears. I think the 'tramp' and the box together represent fear. Or the dark side of human nature. Sometimes, it is fun to be wrong :D

So yeah, cheers for sharing your slice of the experience. I wonder if you watched anything else by Lynch and if so what would you recommend - closer to Mulholland Drive?

But that's a whole different sitcom :)

Ha! Love it when we can trace these connections between different time periods and how ideas change through them or not :)

Well put - Hollywood's model seems good for running things into the ground, including the bad boy myth.

I'll pop out and read about that author of Beauty and the Beast, she sounds like an interesting character. Cheers! :)

Edit: just a second thank you - found an article expounding on what you said, for those interested. The sheer amount of messages to girls on what will happen if they disobey arranged marriages and the like, is shocking. There's also an insightful parallel that can be drawn between the myths of Cupid and Psyche (one of the older iterations of Beauty and the Beast) and Orpheus and Eurydice.

True that. I forgot myself with this one woman on the bus, not once but a few morning commutes. She looked like Rebecca Hall, but more beautiful - is my excuse. Anyway, one day she stared right back at me and held a neutral gaze for a while. Like an opening, a question? To this day I wonder what did her look mean, why have we unlearned to speak to strangers on a bus, and above all why I looked at my feet too soon! :)

"teaching" the male character how to be a person and have a conversation, WHY do women always have to fill this role

I recently had an epiphany related to this. My favorite fairy tale as a kid was Beauty and the Beast and only now I got some of its message (better late than never, lol).

I think it's an allegory of the woman's prescribed role in the marriage. She is supposed to civilize her husband, make his life more beautiful and less beastly, if you will. The same idea was expressed by the Greek philosophers, and way before them I'm sure. So we are right to be miffed.

Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove...

If this be error and upon me proved,

Oh that project has a long history, as anything in Hollywood.

The first draft Ellen wrote with Julliane Moore and it was called "The Burning Bush" - a reference to literal burning bushes, but also to female desire and independence suffering under patriarchy throughout the ages (the vagina monologues kind of bush :)).

The play is about Mother Earth (Miriam Margolyes - a lesbian icon) awakening and avenging the sufference of women through bush fires and other climate disasters. A group of female tutant minge-a turtles led by Ellen Page try to bring peace between humanity and crazed Mother Earth through the media of cappuccinos, world travel and documentaries.

But they had to abandon this idea because of the pivotal scene where Mother Earth's bush (masses of long curly hair sown onto the pelvic area of a pink onesie) literally catches fire. The prop department messed up one day and Miriam almost joined the real goddesses in the beyond. :)

I haven't seen the second and final version of the play. Perhaps other people here can enlighten us both. ;)

PS: What I want to know, is what did André do in Barcelona in 1999?

If a woman touches you and/or plays with her hair when speaking with you, she's flirting and/or interested in you depending.

In Eastern Europe, most of the lesbians of my generation are butch looking. So i am just imagining the lot of us, starting to play with our hair and touch each other loooooooool as in never gonna happen. Isn't the world a big and wonderful place lol

No worries. I feel a lot like you about wanting to know how we got here. But so far, what i read of queer theory just feels like it's not adding in any way to a clearer vision of the world. So much of their writing is wild conjecture, they assert a premise, never explain how they got to it (this is the most maddening) and rarely bother supporting it with sound arguments. I would also start with reading some credible critique (but which one is that?) and not give Butler the time of day, unless you are really committed to understanding the schtick or you need it for uni.

Hannah Arendt has a brilliant quote about this dilemma: "Sometimes people mistake the need to think, with the desire to understand". Often when i go too deep into some "queerology" i go back to this quote and wonder am i mistaking the need to think (that is develop my own sound arguments) with a desire - an idle curiosity. Anywho, this might just be me though :)

Re-watched and re-appreciated. Besides again agreeing with your reading, all i can say is i re-appreciated Sidse's acting and the fact that her character had to stay so well hydrated throughout the film Lol

On a side note. Peter Strickland, the writer and director, said sth that i found to be true while watching: he tried to make a tender film about relationship dynamics, rather than a specific practice (your reading, spot on). He tried not condemning the characters, but also look with humour and empathy at some of the excesses - "the things we do for love".

I think they were together for at least 5 years? That must've been a lot of 'gut punches' like that!

Listened to an interview she gave recently (bless France Culture) - she talks about how she has mellowed, how she has found a sort of quiet happiness and steadiness (aka her gf, her dog Philomène, old friends and a healthy balance with work). She really painted a lovely picture of a lesbian in the prime of her life - 50s.

Really appreciate your insightful reply!

Particularly because my angry order of some books by Foucault will take time to arrive. I think Helen Pluckrose also mentioned Foucault's influences in her tracing of the history of queer theory and gives a summary in her talk here .

I'm dying to know who was it Butler was so miffed with - probably radfems glorifying the female goddesses Lol

So far I found Butler's ideas, specifically on abolishing the categories of sex, clearly articulated in Wittig's writing. This article explains the connection and summarises Wittig's writings. It also makes fun of Butler misunderstanding and misusing her sources. For that alone a great read, for those who have time for a bit of schadenfreude.

Ps: I'm sure you're well informed on the whole schtick, I just included the links for those who might be entertained by digging around a bit.

I think ultimately her answer will not be that interesting because it's her life and I don't want to dig into it. What is interesting is how we got into this mess in the first place - the history of thought (logical fallacy, more like). I'm reading Monique Wittig's "The Straight Thought" now. The Monique Wittig who said "lesbians are not women" and who wanted to abolish the categories of sex (not even gender) . She is also the one who inspired Judith Butler's "Gender Trouble" - the great troubler of normativity :).

So far I can say that it's like talking to a PhD student who's taken mushrooms for the first time and chased them down with a few tequila shots. There's some good stuff there, but it's swimming under a sea of barf as Strictly would say. I might come back with a post on it if my small brain will be able to gauge the greatness of her thoughts.

PS: this post is mainly in the hope that better minds than mine can start a thread on the history of queer theory and the role of lesbians in it, because it seems lesbians have started this effing mess.

In Russian it's lesbianka (still has a very negative connotation) and gey, this one has a less negative connotation, because they use another word of abuse for gay guys.

For love - liubov

being in love (fem.) - vliublenna

adoring - obojaiu

One old slang term for loving someone from a distance - sohnut (the t is soft), which literally means going dry from unrequited love :)

Needless to say as a lesbian in a homophobic country I stayed mainly in the sohnut lane, the liubov part came later. :)

PS: Love this thread. My favorite word so far is elsker, I think in Swedish sth similar is used as a term of endearment, Älskad = beloved.

I have a friend who recently also did this. I am so tempted to ask what was her thinking behind this. I genuinely want to understand. Is it the simple "I don't feel like a woman" (in which case they give credence to the understanding of woman as the worst of what patriarchy projects on us) or is it "I want to abolish the categories of woman and man, so we are all free" . For the last case there are too many questions to write here.

Either way it is sad.

Loooool. Your gf has a wicked sense of humour!

And that's a great idea! Can be used in a comedic way (as demonstrated :)) and it also has some dramatic layers. Lesbians knitting has a rich history (I'm thinking of The Daughters of Bilitis and their lesbian book clubs with knitters, some independent women in middle ages who earned an income through spinning wool etc.) and we even have a whole mythology here: Ariadne and her red thread. It's a symbol of cleverness and independence - a myth ripe for a modern/feminist remagining.

So it seems, Celine Sciamma, we raise your 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' a 'Portrait of a Girl with Thread" and to your Eurydice reimagining we answer with a new Ariadne. :)

Brill reading. Don't know how i retrospectively managed to erase the sad ending from my mind. I suppose i focused too much on the irony of the whole situation. Specifically, that the one who was the sub in the roleplay was, like you say, the one who controlled the relationship dynamics. And her manipulative side - scary stuff!

And if you extrapolate the bdsm roles to just regular roles we play in relationships in order to please our partners, it shows how you can sacrifice your happiness and lose your sense of self when the person who is your entire world desires different things than you do.

That's a great way to summarise the message of the movie. I appreciate it even more now. Because at the time it also rung some bells for me and mapped out a minefield for future relationships. After watching it i remember being less willing to redraw my boundaries. Useful. Perhaps a rewatch is in order it's been 6 years already, wow. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Highly recommend to anyone in a new relationship or just out of one because - see pixel's post.

I'd love to hear Pixel's thoughts on it - she brings great angles to things that usually fly over my head.

I am beginning to see how pervasive the torture porn and age gap stuff are. You have red pilled me Lol (forgive the use of the term).

That film though saved me from one of my ex's getting my naive self into more than I can handle. I had some alarm bells ringing when she started talking about how "Bdsm is so interesting" and we should get that strap on (cue giant black leathery thing). I wanted to nope out of that the very moment but being the in-love dunce I was I thought I should do research and watch a film. Well this film just confirmed that none of the sub dom stuff is for me. Needless to say we broke up soon after. She is exploring how interesting bdsm is with a guy now :)

[–]Innisfree 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Personally, i think there are two ways that strap-on sex can be shown without giving the idea that this is all lesbians do in bed. One that would make a more light-hearted or funny comment on the practice, like we see with vibrators. And one where it is placed in context as the sex toy that it is, that is a small part of some people's bedroom repertoire.

Regarding a more light-hearted rep of kinks in general, I saw this great film once "The Duke of Burgundy" on two lesbians in a long marriage, one of them is really into being a sub to the other. Made myself watch it cause i couldn't understand all this predilection for sub-dom stuff in some lesbian online communities (perhaps they were not lesbians, with online you never know). Anywho, the film shows this dynamic of the sub always trying to up the game with the dom, and by the end of the film their relationship erodes, cause the dom just gets tired of playing out all these scenarios :), of dressing up in the tight leather, wearing the high heels (which hurts her back :) ), saying all the dom talk. There is this whole atmosphere of boredom and also sadness over the whole thing as soon as the newness wears off (which it inevitably does). It is a great example of representing some predilections with nuance and humour.

[–]Innisfree 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There's such a negative connotation to strap on sex within female homosexual circles that women who are into it, often have low self esteem regarding sex due to forever hearing, 'its wrong', 'it's too hetero-whatever'.

I can't speak to all but it would seem a pity letting what the community thinks affect their self-esteem. I can see though how it can make it hard to find a partner who enjoys the same thing. But in principle, if one finds such a partner, I would hope they can close the bedroom door on other people's hangups about sex and just enjoy themselves. Consenting adults and all that.

Hehe I think Mary Oliver is in order again: "let the soft animal of your body love what it loves" lol

PS: when it comes to rep on-screen though I think strap on sex is not a problem, as long as it is not the only thing shown - not to give the idea that this is all lesbians do. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: clarity
