Are you saying people don't bother researching topics? I agree sources are good, but I would hope the people of Saidit would look for more information through other means instead of blindly believing the contents of the article OP posts.

Raising the standard of saidit by [deleted] in SaidIt

[–]HorseMeat 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I talk the talk, but I honestly don't research stuff either. I spend upwards of 10 minutes composing replies, sometimes, instead of noticing that the reason I'm taking so long to phrase my comment is because I'm suffering severe cognitive dissonance.

The ten minute effort you put into your replies is definitely beneficial. I find my posts/comments often sound like I'm having a stroke. I do a lot of edits to my stuff after they have been submitted.

Sadly, though, the things people need to research the most are the things that are Obviously Right. I've not got a chance of deciding to research those things, and it'd take at least two months of work to turn myself into a person who would.

Honestly, two months to change your mindset into becoming a more educated person is a no brainier. Most people would kill to have the quick adaptability your brain apparently has.

While I like the idea of removing ad tracking, there are addons for both Chrome & Firefox which basically do that anyway. NoScript & uBlock Origins are both some of the many addons that do as such in the comfort & familiarity of your existing browser.

If you actually cared for your privacy, you'd be better off using Tor Browser. It's not perfect, but does a decent job of hiding your online activities. And it let's you remove ad tracking through NoScript. Sessions are isolated per tab too, so even if you didn't want to remove tracking for some reason, you can do so without having the personalized ads following you about everywhere you browse.

Saidit.net — May 1, 2019 — Rounded corner design, fixed black box around chat, lots of changes to saidit wiki functions, automoderator documentation restored, cleaned up code by magnora7 in SaidIt

[–]HorseMeat 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The rounded corners look fine on the post contents box & moderator list box, however I feel it looks very strange on the text box & thumbnail previews. I think there needs to be some sort-of balance. Not everything needs to rounded. For example, Windows 7 has rounded corners on windows, but stuck to traditional square appearance on the taskbar. On Saidit, restoring the thumbnail previews & text box to square would make a great deal of difference visually.

You can spank the monkey anywhere, sure. But this site (according to the welcome post) aims for "thought-provoking discussion" & "fun" kinda like how Reddit was 5+ years ago. You could argue that subs like s/pics s/memes fits under fun. I would say pornography also fits under the fun category too. Reddit has had this sort-of content for 10 years. Five of those years being in the golden era.

Maybe a central hub for exchange of opinions and information, not content of any sort.

There's a few subs not related to either of those things. That's sort-of why I didn't think it would be such a big deal to expand the central hub.

The first impression of the site is that it's trying to be Reddit in the good old days, which surprisingly enough included more than just information & opinions. Of course, I learned today that this is not the case and that the site has other visions in mind.

If by adult content you mean naked people dying, the fact that they are naked is not the reason why they are featured on the sub.

Dying in video or image form is generally considered adult content without them being naked. The rating boards increase the age limit of media when death is clearly visible.

You can't be purely reactionary, though. Some subreddits should be be banned, it's not strictly a bad thing.

Depends on where you draw the line. I always thought it was preferable for the sub creator (sub moderator) to have full control over their community. Sure, there will be subs which have debatable views by most peoples' standards, but it's nice to let them have their place as long it's self contained within the sub.

How would you say that porn could give rise to good debate and conversation?

I'm enjoying the debate about porn right now. You can have a good conversation/debate about anything if you try hard enough.

You can certainly find nudist stuff on PornHub. To most people, they are considered the same thing. Of course you know the differences, so I shouldn't bother with that card.

To be completely honest, I never expected so much discussion over porn on this site. I would have thought there would be one or two people expressing their thoughts, and then it would quickly die off. It's interesting that most are in collective agreement here against porn. It really does show that the site has set visions in mind even early on in its lifespan.

There's no discussion if you let your paranoia believe you are being a creep for admiring the human form. If you have been on pro nudist sites, you can see that actual discussions can be had with pictures involved. Nudity is how you choose to perceive it. Even casual nudity with no sexy poses is seen as pornography to most. It's still a very taboo subject in most countries.

It still absolutely no surprised to me why WPD was killed off before T_D.

I guess it couldn't really be surprising since they banned pro choice subs and a random eating disorder sub long before they banned WPD. I remember somebody actually posted a massive list of all the subs they had banned within the time frame of a few months.

It's interesting if you think about the consequence of that fact, it means that people dont have freedom of thought, they give up that freedom in order to "fit in" and "to be a true _____" . There was a Joe Rogan w/ Adam Conover (Adam Ruins Everything) podcast the other day where you could see this in full effect, and it was very sad. It was obvious his reasoning was purely in the service of SJW prerogatives, and not intelectual honesty, or even common sense for that matter, and yet this guy hosts a show predicated on facts and truth. Quite incredible.

The internet used to be the best place for freedom of speech before smartphones & social media popularized it to the general public. Nowadays it sadly is a shell of its former self. It's no surprise he would try cater to the SJW crowd. If he didn't, he would likely no longer have a career anymore. Control is slowly slipping away from everyone. We've got the treasure the remains while it lasts.

reddit whored itself out, pretending to be social visionaries that they obviously are not, in order to beat Digg, and they succeeded, and now they are paying the price for having pulled a colossal bait and switch.

At least you got some good years without much in terms of censorship.

Well the rule is "porn", and not "adult", technically.

Yeah okay. You could however add a twist and call it gore porn. :-p (Obviously joking here)

It has nothing to do with self policing. The problem with, say, a white supremecist subreddit has nothing to do with self policing. It's about the premise of the community itself.

The line is the biggest problem in this regard. If we were truly one for no censorship we would allow these types of subs even if we don't encourage or support them in any way.

Sure, but unloading a collection of porn pics is not the same as having a debate about porn.

Supporting Donald Trump isn't considered tasteless, at least not yet.

Controversy has happened a few times in the media, due to how some supporters act on The Donald. Reddit weirdly doesn't seem to care, instead they look for other subs to ban.

As a participant in WPD, I understand that people think it's tasteless, and while I think I can make the case that it is not, nobody is going to listen to it, so we're at an impasse, and on living on saidit.

Well I'm not against porn per-se. I just think the reasoning of "it brings about novel discussions" is a bit bullshit lol. It's to jerk off too and NEVER in my life have I walked away from a porn sub/site and thought "Wow, I really had a thought provoking discussion there." I've always walked away satisfied and ready for bed, though.

Never in your life?! :o Boy, you don't know what you missing out on.

There isn't a "no nudity" rule, there's just a no porn rule. You want to discuss the human body and it's nude glory? I don't think magnora7 would be against it.

Yeah, someone mentioned that some of the WPD deaths involved nudity. I guess I should keep that in mind. I'm not sure if it's useful or not.

You want to post a chick getting DP'd in "Big Black Cocks 5"? Yeah, I don't think that will lead to any kind of meaningful discussion. This is a site that's set on meaningful/dense encounters with thought put into those discussions.

It's like discussing your favorite TV show or movie when you think about it. :-p

Again, I just wanna say I have no problem with porn. I watch it all the time, love the stuff. I just think it goes against the goal of the site and doesn't spawn much meaningful discussion beyond "nice tits".

That's fine, I get it. It's been drilled into my head at this point.

More people should be content with mediocre lives. People honestly set the standards way too high for themselves these days. It's not healthy for the mental state of the mind.

Also, you bring up the government, but in my country the government is actively going out of their way to make pornography a pain in the ass to access.

I respect your opinion on porn, I just don't necessarily agree with it. I find it helps calm the mind after a stressful day of work.

We're still growing. I believe we'll attract that target audience at some point.

Later on I'll look around and see. Right now I can't be bothered. It's definitely something we need to address if we want this to become a viable alternative to Reddit.

Oh! :/ That's an unfortunate decision to make. I can't believe we're already there. How come WPD 2.0 is exempt from this rule?

I'm still kicking here despite my thoughts. I don't think anyone minds the discussion. It's more that they mind sampling the actual meat itself. I feel like I repeat myself far too often sometimes.

What does that mean? Tumblr is known for so much shit that you need to provide some examples.

It's all very lopsided if you ask me. Is there an ongoing discussion about the adult content ban?

Actually, catering is fairly easy with subs because you get the choice whether or not to visit them. For example: Say you don't enjoy politics, it's easy enough to avoid due to the fact subs are like little communities.

I would agree with you if the "Fun" catergory & subs didn't exist, but they do. Personally I don't see the issue with catering to different types of people. It's what makes the concept of subs interesting.

Using Tor with NoScript blocks ads just fine. No need for Google tracking your every move.

Ultimately it bends to Western values. WPD was only banned because a mainstream paper put it under the spotlight. Sometime WPD 2.0 might be under a similar spot light, and the owners of this site will suddenly find Jesus.

It gets slightly more confusing once you consider that Braincels & The Donald are still around. I don't believe for a second that those haven't received some attention from the media.

I think an unspoken goal of sites like this is that there are problems and we want to fix them, and that's where the debate comes from, and at the end of the day, the acquisition of porn is not a problem that needs fixing.

Might become a problem in the future. Countries all seem to want a slice of the pie.

It will happen with any site that becomes large enough to where its owners could live off the ad revenue.

An unfortunate truth. :/

It's not about censorship, it's about a website's owners not wanting to materially support bad people.

I'm not going to argue with that. I was just expressing my view on where I draw the line. It's obviously very different for everybody. I think you, me, and the owners would all draw the line at different places.

We know how this plays out, comments like "I'd hit that", "nice tits on this one", I guess the problem is not enough disagreement would be had.

Hehe. Nothing wrong with everyone being in agreement for a change.

Does it matter where the servers are? Governments/ISPs can sadly censor stuff without having direct access to the servers. Being blocked in certain countries is not ideal for any site.

I guess I'm not good with the graphic thing. Probably the reason why I don't pick people up often. And yeah, I agree the people are friendly. Hopefully that doesn't ever change.

I guess, but technically they could shut down the site for a bunch of other reasons. All it takes is one popular video posted on WPD 2.0, then BOOM! I think that's why a lot of sites are cautious about violence/gore in general. It's similar to porn in that aspect.

Though I understand Saidit probably won't change its stance on this. I created the post in the off chance that I could actually influence a change.

Loops happen sometimes. (See Brexit for example)

I'm not sure that would be true. In my experience with alternatives, people tend to have to work to find them. The ones who do find them tend to want to protect it from failing. But if what you said was true, why aren't movie nerds flocking over in mass numbers? There's quite a few illegal links in s/piracy/.

As I said in the first post, have trust in the sub moderators. I'm sure we wouldn't have WPD or SS if we didn't trust them to do their duty correctly. It works for Reddit on even the smaller subs so it would work here too. The reporting system exists for a reason.

It should also be taken into account that Saidit is currently tiny in comparison, so content management is fairly easy at this point. And even once it starts to grow, there will be more users to actively report illegal content to the sub moderators.

Isn't this stuff already widely known? Sites like removeddit rely on the fact Reddit doesn't actually delete things properly.
