That's roughly 7 people per year. To put that in perspective, around 150 people per year are killed by coconuts, champagne corks kill 20 per year and falling vending machines kill 2 per year. The media love to glorify the dramatic story over the mundane.

Exactly, these 'assault rifle' bans are just posturing for optics, it would have no measurable effect on shooting deaths, but would severely hinder the ability to form an effective militia against a tyrannical government as the founders intended.

Significantly weaken the 2nd Amendment, while preventing a statistically negligible amount of deaths

Any behavior that contradicts this purpose is logically dysfunctional, akin to eating for pleasure alone.

I am directly addressing the claim in question here - that there is something inherently wrong with having sex when reproduction isn't the motivation for it. I don't see how you can say this is strawman fallacy

This was not my interpretation of the Communist Manifesto, but maybe it is more insidious than I realized.

it says over and over that the goal is to destroy the class system, so there is only one class. But again, how does someone take from the individual, if they are not above the individual.

The chinese wealthy, are not bourgeoisie, because all of their wealth is controlled by the state.

My understanding was the Marx and Engels were working under the assumption of a democratic state. The State being nothing more than a majority consensus. The wealthy capitalists would have their wealth confiscated by 'the people', the people would run the means of production through democracy, and the goods would be evenly distributed

My objection to even this sort of arrangement is that you haven't solved the problem of Capitalist Alienation at all. Anyone in the minority of this theoretical nation would be operating under the same alienated condition as if the means of production were owned by capitalists, and people are bound to be in the minority on some issues

To me, communism is simply the principle of democracy applied to the economic sphere. The theory anyway, as we know in practice this is not how it ends up working

Yes

The state is made up of people at the top, who communism does not apply to.

I understand that this is the way it plays out, but it also isn't exactly what Marx had in mind in the Communist Manifesto or Das Kapital. Not that I personally would want any sort of centralized control of the economy.

Also, not that I think it would work much better, but much ignored Kropotkin advocated for a very decentralized communism, which opens up a different set of problems

Don't anger the Rockefellers or they will shut you down like anyone else thinking of using steam. Buy gasoline at Seven Bucks per gallon but water is a bit less. .

I mean, I hate to be a skeptic about a Rockefeller conspiracy...but with some back of the napkin math, this doesnt seem to add up. The issue isnt the water, its the wood/coal or other fuel that you have to burn to heat the water to create the steam. Water has an EXTREMELY high specific heat capacity (which is why we use it as engine coolant, the other part is jsut antifreeze and keeps the lines from rusting which pure water will do), and this is not an efficient energy process.

Steam IS used in power generation, just not how most people think. The natural gas burning engines that the power plants use create a bunch of waste heat like any engine, and they trap this heat and use it to make steam to increase the thermal efficiency from the base Carnot cycle (this would be too large and heavy to fit on a car), but a pure steam engine doesn't seem like it can possibly be an efficient or realistic modern transportation solution. Unless you know something I don't, this doesn't seem likely to be a conspiracy.

How can something be fed to you externally, especially forcefully, if there is no simulation?

Again, I don't think I follow. It sounds like you have assumptions about the nature of what a non-simulated reality must necessarily be like. Are you suggesting we would not need caloric sustenance for energy and exert some sort of sovereign control that prevents force/coercion in a non-simulated reality? If so, what is it about the nature of non-simulated reality that makes this so? I like the sound of that, but what makes you think that this is the case?

You seem very strong in your convictions about this, I just want to understand what makes you so confident in your beliefs about the nature of reality

I like the idea of hydrogen, but I've heard it's hard to store long term because the size of a hydrogen atom is so small (literally the smallest) that it leaks through containers more readily than any other gas.

You are correct that there are infrastructure issues...Hydrogen also likes to be a gas which takes up a massive volume, and makes it hard to 'pump'. It needs to be stored as a liquid with massive cooling and/or pressurization in terms of creating the infrastructure to completely replace gasoline. I will grant that this is a substantial enough issue that it would take too long to go straight to hydrogen cars from gasoline. Electric is likely something we have to make due with for now, but I don't think it is ideal. Hydrogen adoption at the grid level is probably the best way to begin. Use the excess electricity produced by solar and wind to perform electrolysis, and use the hydrogen for off cycles

Again, I tend to agree with you, I think there is a high probability we do in fact live in a simulation, but I don't think I completely follow what you are saying here.

Whether we are in base reality or not they are all simulations.

Ok, but even if we are in a simulation, this infers the existence of a non-simulated reality somewhere right? Or else there could be no simulation.

Otherwise nothing objective and forced upon us could exist.

So now you are talking about a non-simulated reality, one you say must have certain conditions. So I think I am not understanding what you mean by 'they are all simulations', because this is what I meant by a 'base reality' - one which is not a simulation but that the simulations may exist in (in which case the problem of where this 'real' non-objective reality came from would still be present - it is something and can't have come from nothing).

I am also very curious about this non-objectivity requirement. What is it about 'reality' that means it must have this property? The 'base reality' being completely subjective might be the case, quantum physics shows us some interesting properties about observers and our current reality, but you are very adamant about this, and I don't think I completely understand your rationale here, or how you are getting from A to Z

You are in a simulation controlled by demons.

all atheism denies the truth by claiming, nonsensically, that everything can come from nothing.

Your reasoning does not solve this conundrum, it just adds a level of abstraction.

If we are in a simulation it stands to reason that there must be real non-simulated base reality from which the simulations emerge. In order for this base reality to exist, you have the same chicken and the egg conundrum you do if you assume that our current reality is in fact the base reality.

There really isn't any logical framework that can escape this particular conundrum, but you have taken the same conundrum and added a level of complexity with a simulated layer of reality on top of the old problem. By Occam's razor this seems to be less probable, although there are some reasonable and quite convincing rationales for assuming we do in fact live in a simulation I admit (I object only to this particular rationale on its own being used to justify the theory, not your conclusion)

There need to be improvements in the potential to recycle lithium-ion batteries, but perhaps this will develop in due course.

Personally I think hydrogen needs to be the solution for vehicles. Batteries are very inefficient at storing energy compared to electrolysis, and have massive disposal/recyclability issues to boot. The 'Use Case' for batteries needs to be for items where it is infeasible or impractical to attach a power plant to a portable device. Think your iphone, your airpods, your laptop computer. We are quite used to including power plants in cars, and this does not require the unsustainable mining of lithium and other rare earth metals.

You know where I heard that before? When the gays and lesbians were first campaigning for "rights."

Idk, to me that was at least somewhat about rights. Gay people wanted to be able to get married, and they were forbidden from doing so, for no good reason that I can think of.

Trans people aren't really lacking any 'rights', they just want to force people to use certain pronouns. Trans people are allowed to marry, and they are allowed to take their hormones, have surgeries and play dress-up. They can't even lose their jobs for doing it or be denied services or housing, its legally discrimination.

LGBTQ whatevers have all the same rights we have now, and that is the problem with the advocacy - they got their equal rights. There isn't anything legitimate left to complain about, so they bitch and moan that other people won't renounce their belief in basic biology, and actively participate in their roleplaying, rather than just allowing it

I also dont want them teaching this crazy shit in schools. People have religious freedom, but we don't let schools proselytize students either.

If the cops pulled you over and wanted to search inside your butthole, and you didn't have any drugs, you would cooperate and not resist?

[–]HongKongPhooey 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Clearly wrong. Elon is is obviously very heavily invested in batteries. Batteries that require really destructive mining of rare earth minerals, and are not particularly efficient at storing energy. Batteries are nice for things like cell phones where we dont want to carry around a portable power plant for energy, but for large scale energy grid like homes and power plants, hydrogen electrolysis is clearly a better answer for storing the excess power produced by renewable sources.

Appreciate the reply, and I think that what you are saying has merit. You are correct that it is not 100% an economic issue, I will admit my claim went too far, although I still think personal greed is the primary or original driver of this phenomenon.

What about much earlier American history? The influx of Chinese to build the railroads also seems driven by the price of labor and the need to exploit it. As far as slavery, I know that Jews were heavily involved in the slave trade, but if importing slaves was a conspiracy, this would likely revolve around appealing to the self-interest and economic greed of non-jewish Americans, although racial inferiority was definitely used to justify this, so again maybe I am biased towards seeing things only through the lens of economics.

I do think the situation in socialist democracies like we see in Scandinavian countries is different than the US. They create a very strong social safety net, and pay for it with progressive taxation, so there is no good economic greed motivation to import these people, because the rich will just have to subsidize their cost of living one way or another. I admit that my economic theory fails to explain why Scandinavian nations would embrace mass immigration. I can see that social/political ideology is indeed be a factor here, although I wonder if this was always the case, or a result of American culture pushing this narrative globally because we ended up with a melting pot due to greed, and need everyone to get along now. (You do however make a fair point about the democrats wanting to import a bunch of brown people due them voting Blue)

Anyways, this is issue is more nuanced that I was giving it credit for, and I appreciate you widening my perspective on this a bit

But of course there are several dangerous trends, as you note. The economic exploitation underlies so much of this, if not all of it.

Completely agree with you. Extreme polarized discourses have terrible influences on dummies, and the far right rhetoric is indeed chock full of it.

I think you are misunderstanding me.

The Japanese and Korean elite could increase their profits by importing cheaper labor from abroad, but they dont.

I was saying the reasons FOR importing labor are based on economic motives, motives not to do it are another matter entirely, and maintaining cultural homogeneity I admit is one of them

in many European countries it has been conclusively proven that these immigrants are a net economic loss,

I am not talking about economics in terms of GDP. During the pandemic we had 'net economic loss' yet the wealthy elites like Bezos and Musk got richer. If the wealthy can get wealthier with bad economics they will. Same point with importing labor in America. Special interests of wealthy individuals control politics, not the general interests of all.

The reason the US is 'Replacing the whites' has nothing to do to with a racial motive to get rid of white people is my point. It has to do with the motive of wealthy people to economically exploit cheap labor. The consequences of this, indeed cause racial issues, I am not denying that, I am talking about the causation of the declining white population not being caused by the elites having some sinister racial ideological conspiracy to get rid of the white race

Good examples

Wow, not used to getting my point across with you...I don't even know what to say...

I do want to say however that I think 'white replacement theory' is problematic, but for a reason not related to mass shootings.

The percentage of Americans that are white has always been declining, and for the same reason - capitalist economics. We imported African slaves to work for free on plantations. We imported Chinese to work on the railroads when the Irish got uppity and wanted a living wage. We import mexican farm laborers so we dont have to pay farm workers a living wage. We import Indians to take all the tech jobs for less, and be dependent on their employer for continued visas.

'Replacing white folks' has NOTHING to do with RACE, and EVERYTHING to do with ECONOMICS. The exploitative capitalist kind where the rich get richer, and the rest of us are slaves or have no jobs at all. Falling into the trap of identity politics is how the wealthy oligarchs prevent a class war. These racialist ideologies are dangerous and stupid because they prevent us from reforming the corruption they complain about, but not because they are inherently more violent than other ideologies

Mass shootings by Dems = 0

Have you already forgotten the Black Marxist subway shooter just earlier this month?

People having stupid ideologies isn't the problem, the fact that they are willing to indiscriminately murder strangers over it is the problem.

Another example, Ted Kaczynski, his ideology was based on environmentalism and dislike of industrial society. I share these views, but am not going to go on a murdering spree. Just about any ideology can result in people doing violence, and the problem is people acting out their ideology with murder, not the ideology itself, even if you think it is stupid and disagree with it, which I do in the case of the most recent shooter. Idgaf if people 'believe' in 'white replacement theory', I care if they are willing to massacre innocent people over it. I don't care if people are Christian, but I do care if they want to start an Inquisition.

Heres an article for you with many examples of leftist violence. I think Greenwald makes some fair points

'The Demented - and Selective - Game of Instantly Blaming Political Opponents For Mass Shootings'

'All ideologies spawn psychopaths who kill innocents in its name. Yet only some are blamed for their violent adherents: by opportunists cravenly exploiting corpses while they still lie on the ground.'

She is absolutely right, and it is infuriating to watch the "left" betray every single principle of classical liberalism. Being antiwar and wanting freedom of speech are now far-right values somehow

"This is because the left-wing Democrat is a myth, like the good billionaire or the happy open marriage."

"I've avoided the term, but 'Fraud Squad' feels pretty apt," journalist Aaron Maté tweeted of the House vote. "Challenging the military industrial complex is leftism 101. The Squad just voted to give it another $40 billion via the Ukraine proxy war. So, insofar as they claim to be a leftist contingent, how are they not a fraud?"

"When you've got braindead Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene scoring easy Twitter dunks on Squad members for pouring money into a horrific proxy war while Americans worry about paying their bills and obtaining formula for their babies, it's safe to say that you've failed at your PR campaign, and that you have ceded what would normally be progressive ground to the far right."
