[–]Heimdekledi 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

1) Why are you GC or QT?:

Because it’s deconstructionist approach makes the most sense to me. All categories are artificially constructed and QT seems more willing to admit that. I am however critical of gender as a concept as I don’t feel like its a helpful category to have around, ditto with nationality as a concept.

2) Were you ever on the opposite side? (Ex. Went from GC to QT or QT to GC?)

No, not really.

3) How do you define "man" and "woman"?

Socially created categories whose historical purpose has been to divide the sex spectrum into two boxes, and people whom have internalized those labels due to self grouping instincts in humans.

4) Transwoman are...Transmen are...

People whom have instinctually absorbed a specific societal label into their self concept and differentiate themselves from others with the same self-concept whom the societal label is thought to more appropriately apply. The Trans appellation is therefore on some level a political term challenging the cis-normative assumptions of cis supremacist society. In a non cis supremacist society the term “trans” will become unnecessary.

5) What are your thoughts on the term "cis", "natal" and "biological"?

Cis is a term that I view the same way as trans, a political term describing those whom agree the with the label given to them by a cis supremacist society. Its comparable to people whom identifies with the nationality ascribed to them by the state rather than challenging the objective existence of such categories. Terms like natal and biological uphold a cis normative view of biology, which I am against as I find the Sex Spectrum model more accurate go reality.

6) Do you believe transmen can play in sports with biological men and vice-versa---can transwomen play in sports with biological women?

Sure, but the thing is that all sports are inherently unfair from a competition standpoint. Is people want to play together though I see no reason to prohibit them on the basis of societally constructed labels.

7) What is considered misgendering?

Referring to a person with the incorrect gender associated terms, which includes things like pronouns, terms like female/male/women/men, etc.

8) Gender is...and sex is...

Gender can mean multiple things but Gender Identity is the instinctual urge to self categorize based on perceived social groupings that usually relate to observed sex traits in said perceived social groupings. Sex relates to the particular configuration of sex traits that an individual possess.

9) Do you know people in real life that are QT if you're GC or that are GC if you're QT? Are they friends or family?

I know some other people whom might be QT but it isn't a common term outside of academic circles I feel like. I don’t know anyone whom is GC that I know of.

10) How do people normally treat you based in your views?

Alot of GC people are unnecessarily mean. IRL i don’t tend to share my views, as I don’t tend to talk about these subjects.

11) Are transmedicalist GC, QT, or neither?

QT/TIRF/Nominalist

12) What is one thing you wish the other side knew about your position?

You are killing us with your support of anti-trans legislation.

Extra (optional--Put N/A if you choose not to answer, it's okay)

1) What is your sexual orientation?

Some stripe of pansexual I would suppose

2) Are you a trans man/trans woman or a cis man/woman?

I identify as a woman and as trans

3) What region are you from?(North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa)

USA

4) Feel free to share your background story here of how you became GC or QT.

I don’t have a specific story of becoming QT. It just made more sense to me

I think that is how the rule about no transphobia/misogyny is generally viewed, but the part of me that is an absolutist can’t help but see prejudice almost everywhere in all conversation and feel like it should all be treated the same regardless of how small or large the acts are. I realize though that constantly policing everyone for subjective purity isn’t conducive to the running of a healthy sub, but I have a problem figuring out where that line is, and whether or not I’m upholding systems of oppression by not calling out everything I think is problematic. But I guess other people feel the same way, maybe? idk.

Yes that’s what I mean, and it does make sense what you’re saying and if someone is using their identity rather than arguments to make declarative statements about issues then I feel like critique is fair. I just feel like sometimes there might be assumptions about why people believe things. Like someone can hold a problematic opinion because of the context they were raised in, but pinning it on simply being a member of a demographic is a simplification of a more complex chain of events that led them to those beliefs. And to be honest you don’t need to know why someone is wrong or problematic to identify that they are wrong or problematic or to explain to them the same. It just seems unnecessary to some extent and can cause defensiveness if the other party feels that you are mistaken. Maybe I’m wrong though.

That was not my intent, and certainly not all GC posters behaved that way on the old sub. I was probably just extra sensitive to it happening as obviously I didn’t want myself to be the topic of conversation, so from my perspective I specifically tried to keep things general and not refer to myself or my experiences as being why I believed things, but it didn’t seem to help much. I was probably just noticing though the minority of the time when my own status was brought up rather than the majority of the time when it wasn’t.

Here’s hoping 🤞

Qt/tra, how does identity form? by Houseplant in GCdebatesQT

[–]Heimdekledi 2 insightful - 4 fun2 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

Identity forms in roughly the same way as sexual orientation does but for identity instead of attraction. Certain physical features cause an infant to in some way mentally bond and begin to form a individualized group identity with the organisms who posses the same features. I’d imagine part of the evolutionary reason for this is part of the same reason that chimps and bonobos form sex-trait linked groups.

This is of course an averaged model. Just as there are people who have little to no sexual attraction there are presumably people with little to no physical trait group identification.

”a post-competition study of 693 elite athletes by Healy et al., published in 2014, found significant differences along many variables. The authors found that:

16.5% of men had low testosterone levels, whereas 13.7% of women had high levels with complete overlap between the sexes.[35]

Source:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_verification_in_sports

“Using the log-transformed data to predict a ‘normal range’ for elite female athletes, it would extend from 0.4 to 7.7 nmol/l. There were still eleven female athletes with testosterone levels above 8 nmol/l, three of which had values between 25 and 35 nmol/l, at the upper limit of the normal male range. All but one of these eleven women had normal LH & FSH which would be against but not exclude the likelihood of exogenous testosterone use, and it seems quite possible that one or more of them had the androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). The other women with intermediately raised testosterone levels may well have had the polycystic ovary syndrome or a more rare form of hyperandrogenism.”

You don’t know that it doesn’t serve an evolutionary purpose. A sex trait group identity instinct could certainly be said to have a purpose in groups of bonobos or chimps what with those species forming sex trait groups to control the interactions of the larger groups that they’re a part of (matriarchal and patriarchal structures respectively).

I mean children are considered to rapidly absorb the information in their surrounding environment so that part isn’t controversial, as to why they haven’t proposed such an instinct before, perhaps they never thought about it.

People can’t instinctually tell, as this would be an instinct that begins to take affect (I think) as soon as infants and toddlers can tell their parents apart, which occurs before the ability of people to begin to analyze themselves by such standards.

Initially no, but even afterwards the group identity instinct may cause them to feel sameness with their identified group even after transphobic explanations to the contrary.

They do.

The question was what do you think, and I answered.

I wasn’t aware there was a resolution to that discussion. In any case not using male gendered pronouns isn’t QT language, it’s neutral language. Funny how you can’t tell the difference, but I suppose that’s privilege for you

No I’d apply it to all of the above

You should not apply modern labels to ancient people

Not true. Due to the numbers involves cis women usually beat trans women.

No it isn’t. Individualized care should be the standard, not assumptions based off of outmoded binary sex models.

I like to think that it helps me avoid drawing generalizations about circumstances and to try to remain humble about the limitations of my human viewpoint. It also influences my religious views as I mostly Identify as a buddhist and agree with the teaching that all things are empty of intrinsic existence and nature.

Nor is there a reason to distinguish between cis women and trans women. Which is why a sex spectrum model works best for describing sex, just as a species spectrum model is better at describing evolutionary states over time than imagining species as objectively distinct entities

Dude can be gender neutral, but plenty of people don’t use it in such a way. I’ll keep in mind that you do.

I didn’t give one word answers, I gave a multi sentence answer. It’s not worthless, I just think that there is a 99% chance that it won’t help based on my prior attempts to do so. And Im depressed and barely get on the sub anymore so it just feels like a pointless exercise. Besides you don’t need me to find out about this stuff if you really cared to.

Not really. Post structuralist philosophies advance many of the ideas of nominalism, and nominalism itself is still an extant position in philosophy.

I’m sorry, I just can’t bring myself to commit to the effort of educating you all on nominalism when it will achieve nothing. It just seems like wasted effort

Nominalist remember? All categories are social constructs, so yeah it tends to feature heavily in my thought processes

I didn’t say anything was inherently different.

The fact that ova are only produced once in an individuals lifetime still inherently means that they are produced. So again how am I wrong?

Also the commonly held belief that humans are incapable of forming new egg cells after birth is actually an open question:

I believe that by and large both situations would be seen as unacceptable. There is far more negativity coming from the anti-trans side especially with the right wing surging and the alliances between them and some prominent gender crits.

This has nothing to do with stereotypes and I never claimed to be an expert.

Also calling me “male” is both bad form, and stereotyping of people who actually identify as males.

My appearance is not a statement to me being a woman its just a way that I feel comfortable looking. I don’t want anyone assuming my gender based off of my appearance because then that means that someone else is probably having that same standard used against them to their detriment. I am a gender abolitionist and the only reason that I put an “F” on my drivers license was so that I could better maneuver in this cis supremacist society of yours. I have zero interest in reifying gender norms so don’t accuse me of such.
