It's time to end the TSA by dcjogger in news

I'm surprised you Seppos have put up with it for as long as you have, to be honest. I don't think I've heard or seen a positive thing about em, minus that hilarious South Park episode.

Got a soft paywall, so Copy/paste of article for others JIC.

Hard as it is to believe, airline travel recently became even more unpleasant. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees being required to work without pay for the duration of the government shutdown resulted in many TSA workers calling in sick. The outbreak of “shutdown flu” among TSA employees forced some large airports to restrict the number of places mandatory TSA screenings were performed, making going through screening even more time-consuming and providing one more reason to shut down the TSA. Airline security should be provided by airlines and airports. Private businesses, such as airlines, have an incentive to ensure their customers’ safety without treating them like criminal suspects or worse. Security personnel hired by, and accountable to, airlines would not force a nursing mother to drink her own breast milk or steal a stuffed lamb from a wheelchair-using 3-year-old and subject the child to such an intensive screening that she cries “I don’t want to go to Disneyworld.” Those who claim that the TSA is necessary to keep us safe should consider that the Department of Homeland Security’s own studies show that TSA’s screenings and even the intrusive pat-downs are ineffective at discovering hidden guns, explosives, and other weapons.

TSA employees have no incentives to please, or even care about the well-being of, airline passengers. Instead, their jobs depend on pleasing politicians and bureaucrats. If we have learned anything since 9/11, it is that most politicians are more concerned with appearing to be “doing something” about security than actually reducing the risk of terrorist attacks. That is why politicians’ response to 9/11 was a series of actions — such as creating the TSA, passing the PATRIOT Act, and invading Iraq — that trade our real liberties for phantom security. Sometimes, pro-TSA politicians will bemoan the TSA’s “excesses” and even call for “reforming” the agency in order to pretend they care about their constituents’ rights.

Restoring responsibility for providing security to private businesses will encourage the development of new and innovative ways to more effectively provide security. In a free market, airlines and airports could compete for business on the basis that their flights are safer or their screening is less unpleasant then that of their competitors. If airlines were able to set their own security policies, they would likely allow pilots to carry firearms. Private companies also strive to be consistent in providing services. Therefore, a company providing private security would never inconvenience its customers because of a “temporary shutdown.”

Because government operations are funded by coercive taxation rather than voluntary choices of consumers, federal officials cannot rely on the price system to inform them of whether they need to increase or decrease spending on airline security. In the private sector, businesses that charge more for security — or any other good or service — than individuals are willing to pay lose customers. Also, if businesses do not spend enough on security, people concerned about safety will be unwilling to use their services. Privatizing airline security is the only way to ensure that the “correct” amount of resources is being spent on airline safety.

In the 18 years since Congress created the TSA, the agency has proven itself incapable of providing real security, but more than capable of harrying Americans and wasting taxpayer dollars on security theater. Congress should permanently close the TSA and return responsibility for security to private businesses.

Yeh I noticed that. When I made me account here there was three posts on s/Death, most recent being 21 days at the time IIRC. As I mentioned to ya earlier, I knew the community would want to head somewhere off site, and that was the one spruiked on Eddit to begin with - how I actually found Saidit in the first place tbh. That would have to be watched closely as I get the feeling they wouldn't adhere to the Debate Pyramid as rigidly as our usual community will here.

For example, after a while I'd like to find out what people thing of the banner and applying something like it across all NSFW. Aesthetically Is it too much? Not enough? Bad/good design? Too mod? Better with tabs? etc. Maybe you want a different banner but still want a caution sign in the corner. Maybe you think my caution is stupid or simply unnecessary.

Not at all, and I'm sure folk in here would be happy to give feedback and then can be enacted by popular opinion of the community appropriately. For reference, if you look at the subreddit /r/WatchRedditDie, it is almost a carbon copy of the old WPD CSS - found that out with a laugh when I used me PC to log in one day as I'm predominately a mobile user. I've texted the other ex WPD mods to see if someone has a backup copy of the post quarantine CSS, if they come through I'll shoot it to ya in a PM.

Post WPD Quarantine, we removed the Rembrandt (which didn't have a snoo on it heh, cheeky buggers) and had more of a disclaimer to the material posted instead, as per Admin demand at the time.

Emphatic no. A user on Eddit put it perfectly IMO;

By banning something you give it power. You're saying "this speech here, this is so dangerous that it must be sealed away", that makes it incredibly powerful, and useful as a propaganda tool. The next wack-job that thinks like this guy did is going to be listening to others saying "we're so right about this the government bans what we say" and they'll point to this.

We've learned this lesson over and over throughout history. So much so that it's a plot point in Harry Potter for crying out loud. Sunlight and exposure is how you take down evil. Hiding it away and letting it fester in darkness will not stop it. Which isn't to say we need to broadcast it from the rooftops or anything, fetishizing the way the media does is its own problem. But let it be, let it exist, let it be known. And let it be known that it's meaningless, senseless rambling, so utterly devoid of any truths or value that it's not even worth banning or remarking on except to say how stupid it is.

Just made a post in r/DeaditUpdate directing here so word will spread very soon regardless ;)

What's the past, present, and/or future name(s) of your pet(s)? - also - What's with people who give their pets common people names? by JasonCarswell in AskSaidIt

Porn name is easy and funny; Sarge Forrest.

Cats, my folks always took in turns naming em. So Ma would have something that reminded her of the pet - Wicket, cos of the Ewok - and Da would be the 'funny' name, last one being Deeds, as in "D for Dog".

Dogs, old man being ex army he named em after ranks; Major, Lou (Lieutenant), Sarge (my childhood pet) and now Brig.

Meself, I don't have any pets right now; house is too small for what I want. But when I do, it'll be a Staffy, he'll be called Tank and he'll be mine :)

Cheers mate, shall do! Noticed you post a lot in s/Anime, got any lesser known gems in the horror genre? Just blitzed through the more well known ones, and was thinking about Tokyo Ghoul next... Watched the first episode and wasn't really hooked though, tbh.

I know there's a timer for new accounts that I've passed the threshold of, do you mean that?

If not, are you getting an error code as well?
