Cool, I'm glad my feelings aren't totally out of the norm there and very glad to spread some light to you too. For what I know of old school Catholics, Vance doesn't fit the bill. My grandparents wouldn't even have intermarried with Italians, not out of hatred but out of an idea that their culture was just very foreign. His marriage already proves his ability to tolerate interpersonal difference to a degree I wouldn't have imagined for members of my own family. Hope that translates to the job. But straight up, my old school Catholic Democrat grandma fully understood the meaning of separation of church and state and applied it to both abortion and divorce. I do worry that without the grounding of the elder generation's hard won wisdom, that perspective will be neglected, but church is usually full of old people so fingers crossed.
