I find myself missing the wild west days of the internet often. While I agree with the notion that free speech doesn't necessarily mean freedom from consequences, it seems like everyone wants to use that as an excuse to censor dissenting opinions. Right wing opinions matter just as much as left wing opinions. If you disagree with something, either have a debate or just move the fuck on and keep scrolling.

I've experienced sleep paralysis twice in my lifetime. Once when I was a kid and just last year. Both times I never felt more immense panic than I did at those times. Something I would never wish on my worst enemy...

When did reddit jump the shark? by [deleted] in AskSaidIt

Reddit stopped being a website that cares about free speech after Aaron Swartz passed away. Shortly after that, Reddit became a corporation, admins started censoring opinions and banning subs and it's been on a downward trend since then.

Newcomers: Let's make sure Saidit is better than Reddit. This shouldn't be a place to waste time, but to have productive and intelligent discussions. by Aureus in whatever

I really do miss early Reddit. It was still a circlejerk, but you could filter out the noise more easily. Nowadays they're slowly stripping their site down to just the default subreddits. Very few mods controlling about 99% of the website. Worrying about how to maximize profit. Censoring dissent. It's the exact same shit that killed Digg.

While I wouldn't go as far as communism, I would certainly agree that copyright law can fuck right off in its current state.

Free speech on Reddit is essentially dead. by earthcake in WatchRedditDie

Free speech isn't dead on Reddit. You can say whatever you want as long as it's advertiser friendly! Also, remember to buy Reddit Gold™!

Edit: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger! :)

Honestly, Reddit was a giant goddamn circlejerk even before PC Culture came in and started policing what they see as wrongthink. Even then, the smaller subs were always the way to go. Then after Aaron passed away, Reddit became a corporation, and they brought in Ellen Pao, shit started going downhill. Around 2009-2012, if you saw political content make it to the frontpage of a non-political sub, the top comment would usually be "Looks like /r/politics is leaking again" and/or critical of said political content being upvoted. Nowadays /r/politics hasn't just leaked, it's flooded the entire website and no one seems to care anymore.

I'm now frequenting both Saidit and Ruqqus a lot more now. I'm not against political content, but keep it in the political subs. It's annoying when I just wanna browse memes and all I see is "fUcK tRuMp!1!" or "cUcKeD aGaIn LiBz!!!1".

Another thing is Reddit is now banning people without warning for upvoting posts they don't think you should upvote. That is way too far in my opinion. It's only a matter of time before they ban you for agreeing with someone who happened to post in /r/The_Donald even if the comment has nothing to do with him.

The same shit that happened to Digg is destroying Reddit. I feel like it might just be an inevitable cycle at this point. Fark --> Slashdot --> Digg --> Reddit and so on

Also, an obligatory fuck /u/spez

I miss when Reddit used to actually allow free speech. Now they're openly censoring right-wing subreddits in the name of free speech.

The only reason I still visit Reddit is because of the porn. Even then, /u/spez will probably censor those subs too soon enough.

I got kinda annoyed when I went to a help thread for a computer problem, found a Reddit thread that's a few years old only to find the comment with the solution was re-written with the blurb about Reddit's comment system and how the user deleted their account.

To quote Walter White, "You're goddamn right."

Right-wing and conservative voices are being drowned out by being lumped in with racist and homophobic viewpoints. As someone who is a left-leaning libertarian, I'm smart enough to know that Republican =/= Racist, Homophobic, White Christian Devil. I also think there's a lot of positive stuff about Trump that doesn't seem to make it into the news media these days. He's probably around the same level that Hillary would have been even though I trust neither of them and I do not trust Biden either.

Politics is fucked in this country.
