You don't need to eat lead paint to be affected by it. Just by constantly touching it you can absorb it through your skin, it can be from leaded gasoline, it can be from contaminated water like flint. Lead was also just one example. What about income disparity between different classes of people, how can it just be race if one person is able to have a higher quality of education, and more opportunities presented to them. Preference of choosing between prestigious post secondary education and not even having the option because you and your family could never afford. Societal pressures and stigmas also can affect that. While not an example of race women in the past have published books under male names because of stigma. Not an exact comparable but just an example of social stigma. Education can also be more difficult because of being in a troubled family or in a rough part of town. I think assigning all this value to race is a huge over simplification of the incredible amount of nuances and intricacies that surrounds human intelligence. Especially when IQ isn't even a proper evaluation of full intelligence in my opinion. Does it account for someone's ability to be a mechanic? What about welding or carpentry? A farmer might score way less than a university professor of say English on a IQ test but certainly the farmer knows way more about crops and livestock than the English academic. Every human is a unique individual with strengths and weaknesses that are not predetermined by ethnicity.

I'm speaking quite generally. I know for instance that studies have shown people who are African American in North America are at a slightly higher risk of heart disease. I know there are nuances associated with dna and such but I think it's more complicated than just DNA as a blanket answer. Well it is a factor there are other things to consider, like how poor neighborhoods and ghettos tend to have lead paint which negatively impacts intelligence. Nutrition and diet affect this as well, fast foot directly affects intelligence in a negative way. This is an extremely long reply so apologies. I think it's also worth noting that IQ tests are not without there flaws. People who are using English as a second or third language and not proficient in English are obviously going to have a lower score if not tested in their native tongue. I definitely understand and appreciate that it is as simple as I made it out to be in my initial comment but I wasn't particularly interested in writing a 60 page report haha.

That sounds awesome! I can't speak much to fashion as it's something that always sort of escaped me a bit. I think general would be the way to go at the start since the site is small and you can make a second more specific sub later. You could enforce rules and general guidelines about not body shaming people. I'm afraid I can't offer tons of advice as I'm not much into fashion but I encourage you to make the sub! Just try and post lots and try to draw some more people. To discourage hug boxes you could also put a guideline perhaps for posters to be more open to constructive criticism so long as it is constructive. Maybe you could use flairs to separate people who are looking for constructive criticism and those looking just to share their fashion. Hopefully I was of some help :)

I find race quite arbitrary, what does the amount of pigment in a person's skin have to do with their value as a person? I'd compare it to the analogy of judging a fish by it's ability to climb a tree but it's more akin to judging a fish by its ability to do calculus. If you are someone that judges someone off their ethnicity then you are just applying your personal biases and beliefs onto an individual you have never met. I believe there can be some merit that ethnicity has correlation to culture as people who have Chinese strong Chinese features are more likely to be involved in Chinese culture but that is still an assumption. People of all race and skin tone reside all around the world, someone who is very fair skinned can be born an raised in Africa, someone who is very dark skinned can be born and raised in Japan. If someone who would be called African American in America was born and raised in Japan by Japanese parents would they not then be Japanese? We can control our words and actions but we cannot control all aspects of our apperance so to Jude someone, especially those who are extremely critical, disrespectful, and degrading to others, simply based off of their skin pigment is quite silly to me.

You can mute subs and block users which I've found to be quite helpful. Sadly the answer is simply racism and most of the racist people here are quite unintelligent and don't offer anything to the pyramid of debate and just drag the site down as a whole. The best thing we can do is report them and hope that mods and admins will take action at the low brow racial slurs and epithets being tossed around as one to three word comments. If they're going to be racist they should at least have to express and defend their opinions.

You should go back to Reddit if you're going to tell people to get out of here with certain ideologies, the focus of this site is conversation and the pyramid of discussion. Saying something like that directly goes against what this site is about, so if you're looking for an echo chamber then Reddit will be better suited for you.

I think this is an extremely valid point, what do you think should be done about people who post only slurs and racial epithets? I think perhaps some form of auto moderation might help because if people want to be racist they should at least have to express an opinion, instead of just throwing a single word or two word comment that drags the entire site down.

[–]Edvin 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think there is quite a large amount of people here who simply see free speech as a means to use racial slurs. I love seeing all the different opinions here and I think the two different upvotes is a very interesting system but when many users are just going around and only writing single word comments that are racial slurs they bring the whole site down. Who is going to want to keep participating in comments when instead of meaningful discussion happening it's just edgy 14 year olds and racists insulting people. It is only hurting the site in my opinion. If someone wants to express an opinion that might be racist or unpopular that is completely fine, my issue is with the people who do nothing productive and only throw slurs and racial epithets.

I think you would really enjoy The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brian. It's a very poignant book about the Vietnam war and follows the theme of how war always strips you of something. One of the parts that really stuck with me is a section where a guy is talking about exaggerating a story not to make it dramatic but to capture the feel of the moment. Honestly I should have been able to determine you're not a racist from how articulate you are haha. Funnily enough I'm actually a dude, but I had to call out someone saying women aren't human. It's not as if I can downvote them. ended up blocking them because they clearly were beyond reason and I felt I was wasting my time. Intially I had suggested them therapy but after they kept digging deeper into their disgusting ideology I informed them that an exorcism or lobotomy would be a better option. The name of their sub SaidIt was test sub 3 or something along those lines so I get the impression this wasn't their first attempt at belittling women.

"If you're interested in people of different races because you think they might bring something unique to the table that's fine and good and healthy." I'm not sure how my initial comment didn't convey this but I think we've gotten off on the wrong foot. Your initial comment made me assume that you were trying to defend the racist people I often see on this site, especially after a different user sent me an entire essay on why women aren't human. My apologies for misunderstanding that. My initial comment was just meant to display my enjoyment of seeing people from different backgrounds join the community as I believe it will lead to better conversations. My remark about right wing white men was simply a slight against the racist commenters I've seen on the sight and nothing more.

Lmao you're totally right, how could I be so racist to be happy to see diversity, I was mainly talking about those people who are throwing racial slurs, which to me isn't really adding much to conversation, nor the racial slurs, but you're right they aren't racist, I'm the racist one for enjoying having different people with different backgrounds hahaha

Why do we have Insightful/funny over Upvote/Downvote by posty in SaidIt

[–]Edvin 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You should check the welcome to SaidIt section of the website, they explain it there. Here is an excerpt I copied for you: "Having two types of upvotes also means that you can sort posts and comments by fun or insightful. This is a system that slashdot used to great success and we're excited to try it out in a saidit-like environment. You can use the 'fun' or 'insightful' tabs on the main page to out the sorts for each type of upvote.

If you think something doesn't belong on saidit, you can ignore it or if it's really bad you can 'report' it and this will flag it for the sub moderator to take a look at it."

Does anyone here think that online communities (Incels, red pill, mgtow, etc.) are causing greater numbers of young men to become less resilient and more resentful? by TheSeventhSense in GenderCriticalGuys

[–]Edvin 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Do you think the shift in economy plays a roll as well. Lots of these young men have grandparents that grew up working hard labour jobs in steel mills and other factories. Then there were world wars that their grandparents fought in that shaped the world they are in today. However there is a steady decline in this sort of honest days work in search of cheaper labour over seas as well as wars that we no longer attribute as good vs evil such as World War ii.

I'm just happy to see more people that aren't right wing white men (this is simply a joke about the people who just comment racial slurs and not meant to be anything more than a joke) haha. I'm someone who really enjoys diversity so seeing the platform expand makes me happy. I was actually considering leaving, but seeing stuff like this makes me want to keep giving it a chance.

Edit: clarification on a joke

I think we are seeing progress, at least in North American culture because I can't speak to global culture, with men being able to break out of their typical gender rolls. More men are cooking, and being able to express their feelings instead of being cold and expressionless. I also believe women breaking into more male dominated professions helps too.

[–]Edvin 11 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 0 fun12 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think what you've said is quite insightful and accurate. I believe that these young men most likely don't inherently agree with everything of incel and red pill ideology but they see older men within these communities and attribute a wisdom with their age and life experience. I also think having a scapegoat for their problems is what is really drawing them in because it's comforting to people to be able to put the world into these black and white, simple concepts, when in reality we know that everything exists within a gray area. What I'm always intrigued by is what these incels and misogynists think about their mothers as we are all sons and daughters. I wonder if they attribute the same degrading views to their mothers or if their mothers maintain an immunity in their mind.

I don't know if you're familiar with the series One Punch Man or not but the creator of that anime and manga started on a small web comic platform and his art was not high quality at all. His success on the platform came entirely from his story telling. A quick Google search said he started on Nitosha.net so maybe you could look into that. If you really wanted to pursue manga you don't need the art talent, if you make a good story the rest just might work out. Hope you can get your stories published op!

You should probably think of women as humans, not as "mysterious magical creatures" because that's equally as unhealthy. As for "selling you on women" I'm not even sure I'm capable of such a task, I genuinely believe you should seek some kind of therapy for whatever might be the source of your hatred for women. The majority of women in my life are in STEM fields, and in my family usually out earn their male partners. I'm not sure what could cause such a sexist view but I really hope you'll consider talking to a professional and that you can heal as an individual and grow as a person.
