Doesn't matter anyway, the US will never catch China, where the best cheapest panels are now made. Just bought a 55" monitor - for under $300- delivered. From China.

That is usually an expensive noble metal, like palladium or platinum.

Another thing to consider is nuclear operates 24/7 where a solar is only during daylight, furthering the spread of the cost.

Also nuclear plants can be built in places where solar is not as effective. One thing I was surprised to learn about solar where I live (East coast of Canada) is just how little energy is made in the winter then the summer. I think this would be a big issue in some places if you are trying to produce local.

Good points. The energy transition will take more than one "solution" - the more the better.

Nuclear energy may have a big role with H2. I'm against constructing something if descendants have to babysit waste for the next few generations - and this may be solved already, if not, one day.

Regarding hydrogen production on the East Coast, here's an American hydrogen pioneer who built a solar-hydrogen house in 2006 - in New Jersey, USA. He uses hydrogen in the winter that was made earlier in the year. This may not be work at scale but it shows it can work for a house.

http://hydrogenhouseproject.org

Thank you for a civil discussion. Hoping you'll check back every so often to see the latest in the booming hydrogen energy field! Next is how hydrogen is "made". There are very few natural pure hydrogen sources. While abundant, most of it is bound and requires energy to separate it.

The US has wasted trillions of dollars over the last 25 years on war and murdering people 8,000 miles away. Meanwhile, China has literally taken over the Solar panel business because they invested in that and not war. Now they have set their sights on Hydrogen - see: https://archive.is/HOWYl

Another hurtle is the cold. Fuel cells make water and of course water freezes. Frozen water inside the fuel cell would damage it so it needs to be warmed up before it's used.

IMO hydrogen and nuclear are the only real options we have.

Almost certainly there are important inventions yet to happen that could help too, but it hasn't been a priority.

In the US any real R&D into H2 was killed off by the Obama admin. That, plus the wars - trillions of $ wasted and millions of man-hours thrown away on surveillance and death. There hasn't been any real groundbreaking tech from the US since the net. Imagine if the US actually invested time and money in real energy independence - it would happen. But that's not important to those in power.

Time for green hydrogen in India is now, says RK Singh; invites private players to invest. “We are going to come out with production incentives for the manufacturing of electrolysers. We are going to need a huge amount of electrolysers,” Singh said by Chop_Chop in Hydrogen

I understand why there pushing for hydrogen fuel, it cost $16.51 per kilogram and The Toyota Mirai has gas tank sizes ranging from 32.3 gallons to 37.5 gallons so add it up. About $550 to fill up and drive 850 miles.

Recheck your sources.

Mirai tank = 5 Kg. Around 375-400 miles range.

1 Kg H2 = about the same energy as 1 gallon petrol.

5 x $16.51 = $82.55

Hydrogen will cost less in the future.

I heard california has some infastructue for hydrogen

56 stations and more coming soon in CA.

The nation to watch is China- there were no stations as recently as 2016

(1 1/2 year old article - there are more now)

At the end of 2020, there were 275 hydrogen stations in Asia, 142 of them in Japan, and 60 in Korea. The 69 Chinese hydrogen stations in the database are used almost exclusively for the refuelling of buses or truck fleets.

China is in the process of retrofitting 1000 petrol stations with H2 dispensers

Isn’t hydrogen dangerous because any leak means a massive explosion?

If H2 leaks inside a building it's a big problem, which can be solved with detectors and automatic venting. If it leaks outside, it's so light it rises into the atmosphere, unlike propane which sinks and collects. Here's a hydrogen leak and ignition test

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA8dNFiVaF0

Sometimes accidents happen of course, and so safety is really important. Only trained techs should be involved.

transporting it through a pipe is not feasible?

There are hundreds of miles of hydrogen pipelines in the US, most connecting Gulf Coast refineries. You can read more at https://www.airproducts.com

There’s some kind of storage issue?

Storage of H2 today is compressed or liquid, neither of which is easy but doable and every day engineers are working on it - from China to Germany. Ammonia (NH3) may be a good way. Whatever the issue is an answer will be found.

Your "talking points" sound like they come from Electrek.co or "Clean Technica"

hard it is to get pure hydrogen, very expensive.

Ever check what a 486 Mhz (lol) Computer cost in the 90's ? OF COURSE HYDROGEN EQUIPMENT IS EXPENSIVE - no parts have been mass produced. Until now. Watch China. Did you know that China mass produced thousands of FC stacks TODAY?

Plus they blow up if punctured.

Where did you hear that? Skepticism is in order. For both sides of this issue. Because that statement is just false. So you should ask yourself what else you think you "know" is just plain flat out FALSE.

Well Germany is way ahead of the US when it comes to hydrogen. They have published a "National Hydrogen Strategy" and are working on projects every day. Maybe they will build a H2 plant on mars. The entire world could get rid of oil probably within 10 years, maybe less, if everyone knew the benefits of hydrogen, but that would make the PetroDollar irrelevant. And if anyone thinks that would be easy they haven't been paying attention.

Who imagined jets 108 years ago? What happened to optimism?

The US went to the moon in a decade. Those people didn't say it would take 100 years. No moon colony but they went there (supposedly!). Seems many people are pessimists these days. Sad, really.
