Wonderful. Just what the USA needs, a bunch of UK upper-class twits all sounding like Lord Bottomley in The Man Who Came To Dinner (1942).

In the scene, Lorraine (Ann Sheridan) receives a phone call from Bevery (Reginald Gardiner) pretending to be Lord Bottomley, a very rich acquaintance of Lorraine's whom she would love to marry for his money and title. It's actually a trick to lure Lorraine away so she doesn't steal Bette Davis' paramour. That's Bette in the background. This is one of her best performances IMO. It's a great film. Jimmy Durante is fantastic as the manic Banjo, who is based on Harpo Marx.

A philosophical quotation from Marx (Groucho, Animal Crackers, 1930):

Here I am talking of parties. I came down here for a party. What happens? Nothing. Not even ice cream. The gods look down and laugh. This would be a better world for children, if the parents had to eat the spinach.

Groucho is having a "Strange Interlude", a parody of Eugene O'Neill's then-recent play.

At Reddit, WayOfTheBern often gets comments from both trolls and non-trolls about Russia surrounding Kiev at the beginning of the SMO. Trolls usually say Russia tried and failed to attack Kiev, running away because of the vast superiority of Ukraine Army. I disputed this nonsense, and described my theories based on articles and comments I had read at MoA.

Here's what Putin said yesterday on the subject. It's similar to what I've said but also includes the anti-peace actions of Perfidious Albion and its former Colony.

Putin:

At that time, in February-March 2022, our troops, as is known, approached Kiev. There were and still are many speculations about this in Ukraine and the West.

What do I want to say about this? Our units were indeed stationed near Kiev, and the military departments, the security block, had different proposals regarding our possible further actions, but there was no political decision to storm a three-million-strong city, no matter what anyone said or imagined.

Essentially, this was nothing but an operation to force the Ukrainian regime to make peace. The troops were there to push the Ukrainian side towards negotiations, to try to find acceptable solutions and thereby end the war initiated by Kiev against Donbass back in 2014, and to resolve issues posing a threat to the security of our country, to the security of Russia. Strangely enough, as a result, we managed to reach agreements that basically suited both Moscow and Kiev. These agreements were put on paper and initialed in Istanbul by the head of the Ukrainian negotiating delegation. This means that the Kiev authorities were satisfied with such a resolution of the issue.

The document was called the "Treaty on Permanent Neutrality and Security Guarantees for Ukraine." It was of a compromise nature, but its key points aligned with our fundamental demands, addressing the objectives declared as primary even at the beginning of the special military operation. Including, as strange as it may seem, I draw attention to, the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. Here, too, we managed to find complex solutions. They are complex, but they were found. Namely: it was intended that a Ukrainian law would be adopted to ban Nazi ideology, any of its manifestations. Everything is written there.

Furthermore, Ukraine, in exchange for international security guarantees, would limit the size of its armed forces, undertake obligations not to join military alliances, not to allow foreign military bases, not to host them or contingents, not to conduct military exercises on its territory. Everything was written down on paper.

We, on our part, also understanding Ukraine's security concerns, agreed that Ukraine, formally not joining NATO, would receive guarantees practically equivalent to those enjoyed by members of this alliance. For us, this was a difficult decision, but we recognized the legitimacy of Ukraine’s demands for its security and, in principle, did not object to the proposed formulations from Kiev. These were formulations proposed by Kiev, and we generally did not object to them, understanding that the main thing was to stop the bloodshed and the war in Donbass.

On March 29, 2022, we withdrew our troops from Kiev because we were assured that it was necessary to create the necessary conditions for completing the political negotiation process, for completing this process. And that it is not possible for one side to sign such agreements, as our Western colleagues said, with a gun to the head. Fine, we agreed to this too. However, immediately, the very next day after the withdrawal of Russian troops from Kiev, the Ukrainian leadership suspended its participation in the negotiation process, staged the well-known provocation in Bucha, and refused the prepared version of the agreements. I think it is clear today why this dirty provocation was needed – to somehow explain the refusal of those results achieved during the negotiations. The path to peace was again rejected.

I haven't seen it yet. I've heard it described as a great spectacle, which generally means great costumes and sets, but mediocre writing and acting. A perfect example is Lon Chaney's silent Phantom of the Opera (1925), which I've seen many times with different live or recorded accompaniments. With a really good score, it's an excellent spectacle but otherwise it just drags, especially the second half. There's just not enough plot to keep you engaged, and the characters are so uninteresting that you don't care what happens to them. The book drags too, but it's a lot richer than the movie.

In contrast, D.W. Griffith's Intolerance (1916) is much longer but really gripping, as is Giovanni Pastrone's Cabiria (1914) which Martin Scorsese says is "like watching documentary footage of Ancient Rome". Alfred Hitchcock's The Lodger (1927) is a superb thriller, with a particularly brilliant silent portrayal of hearing a man walking back and forth above a ceiling. Mel Brooks does a great parody of this in High Anxiety, with Hitch's permission.

Intel used to dominate the U.S. chip industry. Now it’s struggling to stay relevant by RandomCollection in WayOfTheBern

[–]Caelian 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Intel used to make all kinds of LSI chips: microprocessors, microcontrollers, SRAM, DRAM, EPROM, Flash, and even Programmable Logic Devices. As many of these types of chips became commodities, profit margins tightened and Intel limited itself to the most profitable chips: high-performance Intel Architecture processors for PCs. Intel has always been great at packing lots of power-hungry transistors into a small space, requiring increasingly exotic heat transfer schemes. They figured electricity is cheap and customers want high performance over anything else. Intel still leads in desktop and rack-mount computers.

Unfortunately, that's a limited market with low growth. Smart phones are a much bigger market, and Intel processors consume charge way too fast to be a candidate. So ARM took over that market. Their first product, a small personal computer, had to be low power because it didn't have a fan. Low power is a major philosophy of the company. Also, ARM doesn't manufacture its own chips: instead it licenses its processor designs to other companies, who then compete with each other to produce the lowest power, cheapest, or highest performance implementations.

Either that, or that socialist production is superior to capitalist production. I would think that "we're all in this together" is a better attitude than masters and slaves.

But what's really going on here is that the Biden admin doesn't want Green technology to thrive. Like the Republican Party, the Democrats are owned by the oil companies. The difference is that the Democrats lie about it.

I once heard Al Gore give his "An Inconvenient Truth" slide presentation live. It was a great experience, because he wasn't wooden in person and in fact has a great sense of humor. At one point in the presentation, Gore talked about a conversation he had had with a really smart friend of his. Gore was wondering out loud how the USA could possibly pay for the changes needed to convert to a renewable electric economy. His friend said "you have the sine wrong". Gore tried to remember his high school trigonometry and figure out what this had to do with the problem, but then he realized his friend had said "you have the sign wrong". In fact, the USA industrial expansion needed to go Green would pay for itself in new jobs and new economic activity. The problem is that it moves the profits from the oil companies to others, and the oil companies will do everything they can to prevent it from happening. Buying congress-critters is cheap and the public is easily gulled.

And the ruling class themselves have ever more the mindset as described by Thorstein Veblen: only the ignorable do actual work while the truly successful indulge in leisure and conspicuous consumption as much as their means allow.

Evidently the leisure of the ruling class does not include the plays of William Shakespeare:

If all the year were playing holidays,
To sport would be as tedious as to work;

— Prince Henry in King Henry the Fourth, part 1, Act I, Scene 2

So if the ruling class only indulge in leisure, how would they learn the things that would qualify them to rule?

There's very good 1940 American drama called The Mortal Storm about the rise of Nazism in Germany. The great Frank Morgan (the Wizard of Oz) plays a distinguished medical science professor and researcher. At the beginning of the movie he has won a distinguished prize and receives a big round of applause from his students.

Then the Nazis take over. Prof Roth refuses to compromise his scientific integrity and is booed by the same students when he refuses to agree that there is something different and special about German blood. He loses his job and is soon taken away to a concentration camp where he dies.

Then things really go downhill.

The Chechens fought a brutal war with Russia which ended with the deaths of their brothers, fathers, and sons. When they asked, "What for?" They admitted they made a mistake and returned to Mother Russia.

At the end of this war, Ukrainians will turn their backs on the Empire of Lies and return to Mother Russia.

I found this particularly interesting:

Wider war: Israel is no longer feared by its Arab neighbors and the Israeli population believe this as well which for them spells insecurity and an existential threat. This boxes the zionist project in, and it's why the focus is being shifted from Gaza to Hezbollah.

Israel has been a big bully for a long time, confident that its bigger bully buddy will prevent retaliation. IMO the only existential threat to Israel is from itself.

Modern automobiles use lots of chips. Copper wires have become very expensive, so instead of bundles of wires going from the dashboard to headlights, taillights, brake lights, low tire pressure indicators, etc., cars instead have a single high-current power bus and a local area network that talks to small modules controlling groups of lights, etc. Each module has a cheap microcontroller that talks to the LAN and turns nearby lights on and off. A modern automobile has many dozens of these microcontrollers as well as the power transistors that drive the light bulbs.

None of these chips require high-density semiconductor processes. 14 nm and above are fine, and are preferred for their robustness. They are perfectly suited to China's mass production skill.

At this point, Europe is a bunch of chihuahuas trying to pick a fight with a Doberman

From the Scottish wing of the Old Jokes Home:

A Scotsman is walking his Great Dane. It's hot and he's thirsty, so he decides to stop at the pub. He ties his Great Dane to a post outside and goes in for a pint.

A few minutes later, a distraught man comes in and asks "Is that your Great Dane tied up outside?"

-- "Aye, what of it?"

-- "I'm afraid my dog may have killed him."

-- "What kind of dog do you have that could kill a Great Dane?"

-- "Well, he's a Chihuahua."

-- "How in hell could a Chihuahua kill a Great Dane?"

-- "Well, I'm afraid the wee bastard got caught in his throat."

Prosecutor On Special Counsel Jack Smith's Team Shut Down FBI Investigation Into Clinton Foundation In 2016 by penelopepnortney in WayOfTheBern

[–]Caelian 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The Clintons are indeed egregious, but my "worst thing" prize goes to Nixon. When I was a child, I was taught George Washington's "I cannot tell a lie", Abraham Lincoln's "All that I am or ever hope to be I owe to my sainted mother", and JFK's "Ask not what your country can do for you..." That is, a highly idealized view of presidents as statesmen who were role models for children, avoiding even the appearance of wrongdoing.

That all fell apart with Nixon, who lied, cheated, and did everything to advance himself while pulling the presidency through the mud.

Then we had Reagan, who replaced JFK's idealism and cooperation with "every man for himself".

Clinton just took advantage of the new standards set by Nixon and Reagan. I don't think he would have been possible otherwise.

I talked about the shift from JFK to Reagan in my May 2020 Reddit post Happy Days Aren't Here Again.

That is why I am hopeful that at least one of the liberal justices will follow the lead of the three...

SCOTUS has six conservative justices, so if the case is decided politically it's an easy majority. Regarding the Colorado Supreme Court, all justices were appointed by Democratic governors. They have all since been reaffirmed by Colorado voters. This must be done two years after their initial appointments, and then every 10 years until mandatory retirement at age 72.

The US and Colorado justices are supposed to decide cases in a non-partisan way.

Our fearless leader u/FThumb relates his experience with making the DailyKos audience "uncomfortable" in 2016:

One of the most abrupt 'tells' that GOS [the Great Orange Satan, a nickname for Daily Kos later adopted for Trump] was on the verge of jumping the shark was in late January '16, and I found myself on a "time out." This was odd as, short of a brigade of flags for asking a simple (and legitimate) question in a "Hillary Safe Zone" diary a couple months prior, I didn't have anything but the rare random flag and no hiddens.

So I asked, "What's the deal?"

I had been posting my mocking "I've Never Been Convicted — Vote Hillary!" series here and there, and was told by TPTB that, (and this is a real quote) "While funny, your humor has been making some people feel uncomfortable." And I was put on a temporary ban for it.

Oh. Political humor is making "some people" "uncomfortable?"

Okaaaaaay...
