Lemmy and Lenny had the same issue of their installation instructions take you about halfway and then just leave you. The difference is that lotide was reasonably easy to figure out for a Layman so someone could write instructions without being the core dev. I really like that you can take a base install of ubuntu, follow the instructions, and have a working system without any further steps.

You're not stuck in traffic, you are traffic. I'm specifically pointing out lotide to help address the fact that no one talks about it.

Personally, I think it's because the devs haven't pushed it very much so the critical mass of users hasn't happened yet.

I was looking for a federated link aggregator for a while, and Lemmy is one (it isn't ideal for a free speech platform for various reasons), but I found Lemmy wasn't really easy to install which is why there's only a few servers.

Looking at lotide, there were three problems: The lack of basic install guide for someone who is completely unfamiliar, the default theme makes it look like crap and is basically useless for mobile, and there's virutally nobody getting the word out there.

I think that with the recent rectification of the first two issues, I could see it becoming much more popular. Especially if people know it exists which is a function of people talking about it.

I just spent quite a bit of time working with lotide, an open source federated link aggregator and forum.

https://sr.ht/~vpzom/lotide/

There's more information on their own instance:

https://narwhal.city/communities/12

Federation is basically the ideal solution for censorship. Different communities can run their own instances that are operated according to their own community standards, and where censorship exists the network can route around the damage.

Even better is that because lotide uses the activitypub protocol, you can subscribe and interact with communities from different software such as mastodon, pleroma, friendica, etc.

Imo, decentralization is the only way we can win against big tech.

Realistically, just because someone says that they're against something doesn't mean that they're against it. Anyone with half a brain would realize that the insurance companies would stand to make out like bandits if the government mandated that everyone had to be a customer or they'd have to pay a fine.

At that point, it's just a matter of keeping a straight face while they deliver an entire customer base by Fiat unto you. "no, we really don't want this, for sure, definitely don't give us all those customers who are perfectly healthy, no whatever will we do"

I'd hope the ideas are bigger than the man.

There was always a chance that the guy who made billions selling an idea and not usually delivering would sell the idea but not deliver. The idea isn't going away, though.

The idea that the powerful are corrupt and out to screw you over. The idea that a society based on freedom and equality is actually worth something and something to be proud of compared to despotic regimes. The idea that nobody should be ashamed of who they are based on their skin color or gender or who they want to sleep with. The idea that we should be proud of building something, that just pushing soldiers around and pushing resources around and living on borrowed money forever is an unsustainable model. The idea that we should stand up to tyrants instead of supplicating to them.

He didn't deliver, but he reminded people that they wanted better. They wanted better when they voted Barack Obama into office, and frankly they still do want better. Biden was never going to do it. Maybe nobody will. Maybe nobody can.

The tech will switch between the ideal frequency for the case. They're not going to use 50GHz for broadcasting through a neighborhood. It's much more likely they'd use that frequency for line of sight in an airport or arena.

There's studies from long before 5g was a twinkle in anyone's eye that show that 50GHz won't penetrate more than a mm of skin. This is consistent with the concerns of 5g critics who are worried that the higher frequencies will interact more with human tissue, as well as the law of conservation of energy. The more the frequency interacts with the human body, the less it can penetrate the human body because it's consumed in the process.

As I said, this is similar in concept to radiation. An alpha emitter will probably have every single particle that reaches your body will interact with your body, whereas a gamma emitter can penetrate but is less likely to interact with your body. The result is that generally speaking gamma sources are the scariest because shielding can only do so much, and the best protection against gamma is distance.

My research indicated that the higher frequency signals do in fact interact with matter more than lower frequency signals, but because of that the waves are immediately blocked by a very thin layer of skin.

It all kind of makes sense, that's why ionizing radiation is scary, but even then you don't need to worry much about alpha particles unless an alpha emitter gets inside your body.

I think it's safe to say that Trump isn't as good as they say, and he isn't as bad as they say.

He isn't as good as they say because he spent 4 years on twitter talking about all the great things he'd do, but he didn't do any of them. Assange and Snowden haven't been pardoned, all these great documents haven't been declassified, he didn't force congress to balance a budget, he vetoed fewer bills than any president for the past 100 years, he never did get the hang of hiring administrators who weren't already part of the establishment.

He isn't as bad as they say because he spent 4 years on twitter talking about all the terrible things he'd do, but he didn't do any of them. He didn't lock up his political enemies, he didn't make any sweeping cuts to the government, he didn't go out starting all the wars people assumed he would, he didn't play the dictator card when he could have.

In my view, the past 4 years have done more to show people how fascistic the left has become. Trump tried to run the country, the Democrats spent 4 years trying to hang Trump's friends with frivolous investigations and and court cases, and use illegitimate means to hang him for the crime of winning an election they thought they deserved to win. Now they're forcibly silencing him using their 'friends' in the megacorps. They may have won the battle, but a lot of people saw something they can't support, and I think a lot of long-time democrat supporters have turned their backs on the Democrats as a result.

Stagflation occurs when the state runs out of money, so they just print more. Printing more doesn't actually increase the productive value of the economy, so all it does is reduce the value of everyone else's money, so you're out of money in the sense that you don't have any more productivity to go around, but you've got all the money in the world in the sense that you can print whatever you like.

I've got over 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollars hanging on my wall. When it was minted, it wouldn't buy you a loaf of bread. They didn't really have any money in the sense of the ability to buy things, but they had all the money in the world in the sense that they were all trillionaires.

Important thing to note is that women inherently have their value in the dating market from 18-35. Men have to work for their value, and if they don't put the work in then the rest of what's going on in the dating market is irrelevant -- you're just a 40 year old loser instead of a 25 year old loser. (Incidentally, women can also work to be worth more after 35, but it takes an exceptional woman to defy fate and do so)

The powers that be will want good men to refuse the call to improve themselves. They push the narrative that self-improvement is evil. They want men to believe their value is inherent and can't change. Believing this and acting upon it is going to harm both men and women.

I think science worship is a good choice of words, because it isn't actually being a practicioner of science.

Everyone will always twist whatever the greatest power is to get what they want. When I worked at a union facility, every loudmouth had reasons why the union wanted them to get their way. When I worked at a facility with a strong safety culture, every loudmouth had reasons why safety wanted them to get their way. When I worked at a facility with a real ball buster at the top, every loudmouth had reasons why said ball buster wanted them to get their way. In broader society, when religion was powerful, people used religion to silence the people they didn't like. Now that social justice is powerful, you can find articles from psychpaths explaining why virtually everything on the planet is against social justice and needs to be ended.

This is just more of the same. Science isn't being used as a tool to seek truth, it's being used as a bludgeon to force people to comply. Having the wrong (true) data is a great way to get cancelled. Having the wrong (facially correct) conclusions is a great way to get cancelled. If these people were around in the days of phlogestin theory, they'd be attacking people talking about oxidation because their political arguments would rely on phlogestin theory. These are the exact same people who arrested Galileo and charged him with heresy.

[–]BigFatRetard 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The sole purpose of bitcoin is as a currency. I've written many times before that it's terrible as a currency. As a means of exchange, there are massive systemic problems with bitcoin, there are hard limits on the number of transactions that can be verified, so when it gets popular you can't actually use it because it takes so long for the system to process. As a method of accounting, it's worthless because of the huge swings in valuation that hodlers think is a feature, not a bug. How many bitcoins for a loaf of bread? You can't know on a day to day basis, because it might be 3,000 per bitcoin, it might be 30,000 per bitcoin. Finally, as a store of value it's terrible for the same reason. It feels great right now when the 3,000 per bitcoin coins you own are going up, but what about when you saved a bunch of bitcoin at 30,000 per coin and it drops to 3,000 then you just lost everything.

It's basically a pyramid scheme with no value as a currency, and eventually pyramid schemes leave a lot of people holding the bag. You don't want to be one of the winners when that happens, because governments don't take kindly to pyramid schemes.

After that, George Bush sr. ran up the debt a bit, Clinton almost balanced the budget, George W. doubled the debt again, Obama blew up the debt again, and Trump has run up the debt more in 4 years than Obama did in 8.

There are a few politicians who have consistently spoken out against running up the debt, but they're a tiny minority. Both Republicans and Democrats are more than happy to buy your vote with your own money, and the consequences will be really upsetting.

Important question would be: What is the means of production?

You can have the grandest factory in the history of the world, and it won't do a thing without skilled engineers and workers to drive the machinery. The grandest factory in the history of the world also will become the worst factory on the planet if you let it remain static and don't have the innovation and skill of the people making it better. A chunk of steel is meaningless without craftsmen to make it something worthwhile.

Therefore, to "seize the means of production" is in fact to seize the people. History proves this to be true.

Fear of covid is a bourgeois privilege. "Stay home; save lives" means "I'm privileged so I can work from home and still make money. The left in general doesn't care about the poor. They just care about their crusade of the day. 13 months ago it was climate change, now it's covid. They don't care in the least that people are dying of anything but covid. They don't care in the least about selling our grandkids into slavery. All they care about is the one thing they're entitled to be outraged about this hour.

It's been over a decade since Bush was in power. We can't blame him for the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan at this point. It's on the people who refuse to get out.

[–]BigFatRetard 13 insightful - 4 fun13 insightful - 3 fun14 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

One of the most absurd claims is that there is no evidence, even if you believe Biden won the election legitimately.

Of course there's evidence. It's like thermodynamics -- depending on how you define your system the laws of thermodynamics may not apply because something right outside of your definition is going to pump energy into a system.

Likewise, of course there's evidence of fraud, there's always evidence of stuff, whether it's true or not. You can find photos that are damning, videos that are damning, written reports that are damning. Just because you can find it doesn't mean it's even necessarily true!

That goes to the way the left has turned science into a religion. Anyone who actually applies science knows that sometimes -- even often -- you end up with compelling evidence that suggests something that isn't true. You can end up with a graph that seems to perfectly prove your hypothesis and it turns out there was something else going on that made the data look more compelling than it was. Why do you think the sciences are in a crisis where most studies aren't reproducible? Why do you think that p-hacking is a thing? It's because evidence always exists, and it's just a matter of slicing the evidence to support your conclusion.

You do that if you're begging the question, but if you're seeking truth then you have to look at all the evidence, weigh it, and try to come not to the conclusion you want, but the correct conclusion.

Like I said, the claim that there's no evidence is simply proof that you aren't looking. It's offensive to anyone who is seeking truth.

I hope you remember how much you wanted all this when we arrive at a period of stagflation because you used a demand side stimulus to try to deal with a supply side shock.

One of my criticisms of Trump is he wasn't willing to take the crack pipe away, so he spent more money in 4 years than Obama spent in 8 trying to stimulate an economy that didn't need stimulation, that was already past max employment.

A lot of people are going to lose their homes when all this "stimulus" catches up with us, and interest rates quintuple. Taxes will rise a lot for the middle class, and it's all going to bankers -- despite paying higher taxes services will plummet. Ask someone from Venezuela how perpetual stimulus feels. Crack cocaine is a stimulant too, and it feels great until it catches up with you.

Life is risk. Everything you do or don't do carries a risk.

Walk to the grocery store? You risk death. Drive to the grocery store? You risk death. Don't go to the grocery store? You risk death.

Someday, you, me, and everyone both of us know will die. That's just reality. Life will move on, and eventually it won't move on. We'll reach a point where the entire planet is bathed in atomic fire as the sun changes from the yellow cycle to the red cycle. At some point long after that, entropy will reach 0 and all creation will be a homogenous cold void, with no variations in energy to allow for any sort of reaction.

There will be nobody to care. There is no God looking over us, we're a freak chemical reaction that happened to figure out it existed.

The decisions being made to prevent COVID deaths are causing other deaths, some senseless and tragic. Suicides are up. Drug overdoses are up. Domestic violence is up. The poorest people on earth are starving where they weren't starving prior to the pandemic and the ensuing global lockdowns. You don't need to crawl to the deepest darkest parts of the Internet to prove this, it's being reported by mainstream news sources. No matter what decision you make, you will have suffering and death.

What matters to me and to a lot of people is how we live each day. Fascists hate the idea of illness, of disease, of uncleanliness, but those are just facts of life. We should be free to choose how we live. We should be free to take or not take risks and reap the rewards or pay the consequences for those decisions. Sometimes we live blessed lives, sometimes we die tragically in the gutter, and at least in that case we got to choose for ourselves instead of having our fates forced upon us by people who imagine themselves our betters.
