So... no eugenics for any diseases, then, I guess. WTH is "particularly damaging to society in every case"? Even something like CF would not fairly meet that criteria. Sickle cell wouldn't meet it. Even schizophrenia wouldn't meet it.

You can have free-speech without coddling everyone who wants to come in and shout "I like turtles!" in a space where a productive and nuanced discussion about something else is going on. That's why there are subs. You wouldn't go into an "I like turtles" sub and insist on taking up space talking about 1964 Mustang brake pads so why would you go into a "radical feminist" sub and insist on obliviating about how men can be feminists, too, or whatever else that space isn't for.

And assuming people are acting in good faith, look at it like this: you have to take the 101 courses before you insist on spouting your opinions in the graduate-level courses. Far too often people (and very often men) sashay into women's discussions and suck all of the air out of the room, distracting from the actual purpose of the discussion.

I'm totally fine if the sub is heavily moderated.

Anyone who wants to have similar discussions without heavy moderation is totally free to start their own sub and run it however they want to, aren't they? Especially right at this moment where the GC sub doesn't have 46,000 members and isn't any kind of monopoly. If super permissive, light moderation is what people want then that sub will attract more participants.

That said: I doubt this is going to be the ultimate home of GC community building or discussion. I think GC needs its own platform. There are already far too many red herrings and people trying to tell women how to talk right.

Notice the sub’s name? Guess that means nothing. There’s no space only for women anymore. by letal_22 in GenderCritical

I like to think I am an ally to the LGBTQI+ community. Equal rights are important to me and everyone deserves to be who they are. I am a cis white female and I have never been attracted to a transgender male and only one person who is non-binary. I don’t want to harbour prejudice or think differently of transgender people inside. Is it okay to be an ally but not be attracted to transgender people?

I don't think your comment should be deleted. Especially on this platform and the pyramid of discussion or whatever it's called. If your experience actually living with socialized medicine has been frustrating then that's your lived experience. My experience has been in decidedly UNsocilialized medical settings so that's what I refer. Plus in the US "socialized health care" is a huge dog whistle.

That seems like a bizarre conclusion. Do you live in a country with universal healthcare?

Socialized medicine would make everything a ton more transparent in the US and we could collectively apply pressure for what we want out of it. The way things are it's an impenetrable maze of pay to play and no way to compare plans among states or between insurance carriers, or by price point or anything. Prices aren't even available before procedures. It's always a game of "let's see how they bill me!"

I respectfully disagree. Even getting to the person who can answer basic questions has never been straightforward. Much less that person taking time and laying out options and offering a personal helper to navigate the system. When I think of one woman I knew and how hard she had to battle with insurance to cover her breast cancer and how that delayed her treatment and how she died I'm not seeing someone who had helpful navigation through the insurance landscape; she's a lot more typical of the experiences women get in the medical maze. I've never even heard of being appointed your own personal insurance helper through the insurance itself and could very much have made use of such a service.

My physics teacher just announced he’s transgender. by LoganBlade in GenderCritical

[–]BettysBitterButter 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Meh. There is a power-imbalance in a teacher-student relationship. Your "words" you might have with your misogynist teacher are purely hypothetical. And in the meantime if you're looking toward building a career in the field you might be working hard to develop good relationships with your teachers/professors who can help guide you, write letters on your behalf, introduce you to colleagues, etc.

Why waste all that time and effort gambling that this guy is "one of the good ones"? Especially in a field like physics where women are already pushed aside or steamrolled en masse and cheated out of accolades... why would anyone building their career or education around someone who has just now demonstrated a resounding lack of understanding of what being a woman is or how it will affect a woman's career?

Not to mention what it does to your mind to have to compartmentalize your intellectual dishonesty when you constantly have to say things you don't believe at all. What kind of academics

Honestly, if you've had good experiences working with TIMs then that's delightful for you. In my experience I've been forced to professionally interact with several and the overall dynamic has not once been professional or beneficial to women. The power imbalance alone from the "stunning and brave" and "we need to center tw because they are more oppressed than anyone" makes it impossible to interact in a normal, honest manner.
