I never really thought about that aspect. Of course a lot of people aren't aware of such issues, that's why so many people are still using "gender" as a synonym for "sex." But a lot of people truly don't care about these issues, if you try and have a discussion with them, you won't get anywhere because they have no interest in it. I had that happen with a friend and I had to stop myself because I didn't want to accidentally push her in the opposite direction.

I've noticed that many trans people ask for assistance with rent, food, utilities, surgeries- it's SO weird for me. I'm sure part of my aversion is due to my upbringing, but if it's such a big deal for them why don't they take responsibility for themselves and work? Not to sound ableist or shame those in low-income situations in any way, but damn. Grow up and be an adult. You don't see people asking for assistance with their therapies when they're depressed or dealing with other mental issues. You don't see as many disabled people asking for assistance with their issues. You don't see single parents asking for help with their kids.

It's this weird entitlement they have.

Also edit: my eyes just brush over the moment you talked about my 600 Lb Life and I know exactly what you're talking about. There are a plethora of mental illnesses out there that are not properly getting treated. Whether someone is obese, anorexic, trans, depressed, there's a deeper issue at play that needs to be addressed with therapy and possibly regulated medication.

I've seen them try to claim Mulan was trans. Because of she was pretending to be a man in the army, not because she needed to do so to maintain respect and keep herself safe, but because she's trans. /s

Oh, and also Hatshepsut of ancient Egypt. She was the stand in ruler for her nephew, Thurmond III, because he was quite young and she had no male heirs of her own. It was uncommon for females to be pharoahs, so this was their logic- that she was actually a man.

[–]Agodachi 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

My friend is Christian, so she thought boys being girls and girls being boys didn't make sense. Her reasoning was that "God made female and male." She started a discussion with a TIF about what supposedly made her male, and this fight broke out. Imagine this, a young black girl who's gone through a lot of abuse growing up being verbally attacked by a towering, grown white man and white girls in denial about how she doesn't know struggle and should check her privilege. Ever since then, she never really wanted to engage in discussion about it again. If she came across a trans person, she used their preferred pronouns and name and went on with her life. Another time she kindly asked someone "what made someone feel like a man." The specialgenderqueertrans kids at school didn't like that so they talked badly behind her back spreading rumors.

I can talk to her about these issues but she really isn't invested in them. She's quite busy so she doesn't really want to spend her freetime talking about something like this. Sometimes I'll rant to her, she'll listen and agree but I don't want to stress her out considering her experience.

I'm reading some answers here (I've also seen other answers related to TRA nonsense and how families receive it) and I'm quite surprised by the amount of parents who support it. I live in the United States and I grew up in an immigrant family. They certainly don't support the trans community but they also don't support gay, lesbian, or bisexual people either. I should mention that my family is also Muslim (although they are quite liberal compared to other Muslims) so in general, LGBT stuff is not supported, especially when compared to Christianity and Judaism.

I can assure you that most immigrant households throughout the U.S. don't support this trans nonsense but they're also not fully aware of it either. Most immigrant familys are working tough, blue-color jobs and don't really have the time or energy to spend doing research on trans issues going on. Hell, some members of my family don't even know that this is going on. From my experience I've seen this reflected in many households, whether it's African, East Asian, Southeast Asian, Arab, Latino, or European (mainly Eastern European, because the few West European immigrants I have met are quite wealthy, privileged and supportive if this stuff). Again, immigrant households are typically more traditional and religious, so they aren't really supportive of LGBT stuff in general.

Sorry for my unrelated tangent but I felt like including that point here. Now to answer the question, my family has never quite "peaked," they never supported this stuff in the first place. I do try to let my parents know what is going on, and they'll be quite surprised to know that some colleges let TIMs room with females and it leads to a domino effect of sorts where they sometimes bring these issues up with their friends.

When it comes to my friends who have "peaked" they've usually been the ones who have never really understood or supported the trans stuff. My childhood friend never understood or supported it but eventually had to put up with it and try and ignore it because she was attacked for asking questions in high school. The few other friends and family (my age) are quite similar, they don't understand or approve of it but they don't engage in discussion about it and aren't really aware of how bad things are getting.

I wish I had a friend who peaked, because I really supported this stuff before, so it would be nice to talk to someone in a similarsituation. The discussions I have with my friends are way tame compared to the ones happening here.

Interesting to see that female and male socialization is still at play here. From a young age girls are expected to have kids, partake in household duties (cooking, cleaning) and are usually the ones to look after their siblings. This is especially true in immigrant, traditional households like the one I grew up in. My brother had so much freedom and wasn't pressured as much as I was about dating/marriage, the expectation to have kids (my brother could say he didn't want to have kids and my family will just brush it off as whatever, when I said I didn't want to have kids- at the age of 15- they didn't say "oh you're young," no, they said "you're a girl and you must have kids."

Girls are expected to have families, make sacrifices for their families, even if that means giving up their dreams and passions. This is probably why you see trans men in family groups and no trans women. That female socialization is still ingrained in them. It's because they were raised based off of their sex, and it can be reflected in the behaviors and actions if trans men vs trans women.

[–]Agodachi 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The TIFs I knew either were big narcissists or really depressed tomboys. This one TIF convinced another girl she was trans, I'm not sure if this other girl had some sort of trauma she was trying to run away from by creating a new identity, but it was SO ODD since she was REALLY feminine- I'm talking wearing the most girly things to school everyday. Anyway, this other girl transitions (gets the whole haircut, dyes hair blue, wears "boy clothes") and one day she decides she's no longer trans. The original TIF was yelling at her saying "you are trans! You are a boy! You are (new male name)!" Plus this other TIF has other girls transitioning too. This girl who apparently detransitioned still goes by her new name sometimes but all I see is that she is so miserable online, making suicide jokes constantly. Scary to see the domino effect happening there. TIFs should be held accountable like their male counterparts.

Being compassionate is important. A lot of people who peak state that they realized that GC people aren't as bad as TRAs paint these TERFs out to be.

I suppose it makes me feel better when I think about how in the past, people who spoke out against religion were considered heretics and nowadays (at least in Western society) that no longer happens. Also with things like leeches and how doctors used to throw those suckers on every chance they got but it didn't help, and now that isn't standard medical practice. It at least gives me home that in a few years these instant transitions will come to an end.

I was an ally as well. I even had close trans friends (we don't talk anymore because we drifted apart, not because of trans rights issues). Things started to change when I got older and I simply became more critical, especially when the whole nonbinary thing rolled around. It felt like people were conflating personally with some "gender identity" and I saw a flux of girls and my community claim to be boys or nonbinary. Things got worse in college when I would see things like "people who mensturate," "woman can have penises too," "boys can have vaginas," etc. God all that stuff made me cringe so much. I see some of my friends in college supporting every little thing that the TRAs spew it's ridiculous, they don't even go that hard for women's rights, black lives matter, APIDA issues, or Indigenous issues. Sometimes I wish I could be my old self and just support the TRAs blindly again, because it feels really lonely being GC, especially now since the GC subreddits were removed. :(
