I suspect that a good portion of these subcultures are very very old. Crossdressing for example shows up in ancient texts from time to time so I am almost certain that it has existed for millennia. Though I very much doubt you will ever find any literature written by cross dressers themselves until recently. Before the advent of the printing press literacy being the sole purview of the educated scholarly class and all that.

I think these days with the prevalence of smart devices, even if you're pretty vigilant on keeping them from exposure to internet bullshit, they're going to get second hand exposure, and you can't really cut them off from social circles without dire consequences perhaps worse than the second hand exposure itself.

I think you've got to keep a pretty even temper and maintain good lines of communication with your kid, about the only way to navigate now. You want to keep your kid open with you about what they are hearing and seeing so you can help them navigate it. If you aren't careful they'll close up and not tell you anything and then they're going to only get their guidance from the internet which is stupid.

Still can't allow dumbass stuff. If the kid wants to play pretend they are a fox or something whatever, that's normal kid stuff, if they want to play pretend they're a fox or something during class or at the bank or something that's a hard no, time and a place. Foxes don't go to school. They also don't get to eat dinner with the humans. If you want to play fox at the dinner table go into the basement and eat some rats like a real fox.

I think it's more likely the consequence of unlimited unsupervised internet access vis smart devices.

Furries have an interesting history as a subculture and you can trace their history back as a group pretty far. It's a pre-internet phenomenon actually. And it seems like they've always had a lot of infighting between the more innocent "I like cute animals" wing and the more sexually lurid elements. I don't think these elements are naturally the same either.

I think that probably the rise of film as a medium likely triggered some kind of paraphilic response in some portion of the population that later became furries, this was likely increased in the 80's and 90's due to the prevalence of home video. The development of the internet allowed the more lurid elements space to spread. And I think the problematic issue of having cute animal characters engaged in sexual situations is going to mean that children are going to inevitably stumble across it. I don't think many are getting these ideas directly from the parents.

I think basically anyone born before the 1980's had no clue what the fuck was on the internet and didn't realize this shit was out there until very recently. It will be interesting to see how the people who grew up with this sort of unlimited internet access will raise their own kids. I suspect that they'll be more aware of the kind of content that can exist and be a lot smarter about how they let their kids access the internet.

I've got my own theory on this. Came after I heard some older relatives freaking out about a year or two back about the new thing "furries".

Now of course for anyone who spent any time online in the last 30 years to be spared the horror of knowing about furries is laughable, but a lot of these older people basically didn't spend any time online in the last 30 years and only started once the smartphones rolled out. So they get exposed to it and think it's a new thing. Now for course I can't say anything about this other than nod and express surprise or disagreement at it, because dare I go and say "oh yeah those people have been online forever" it's almost always going to be followed up with suspicion and accusations thrown towards you, because naturally how would anyone know about this unless they were a furry?

So more conservative areas like Utah, I think are more susceptible to it for a number of reasons. One, conservative culture tends to be more puritan and sexually repressed, which I think tends to "breed" more crazy people going into dark corners of the internet and finding weird little niches, rather than just being slightly more open and gently nudged away from the weird, the get good at hiding everything and there's no social dynamic to stop their descent into madness unless it hits a point where it can't be hidden anymore and they have no choice but to fully embrace the weird identity publicly as that is now the only social group that will take them.

Second it's basically taboo to discuss these sorts of things at all. At least from any point of intelligence. Anything of any sort of sexual nature in conservative circles is essentially a taboo subject unless it's simply condemning something that the reactionaries have reacted to already and is socially safe to condemn. As such they're almost totally blind to these weird subcultures and potential groups and basically know fuck all nothing about them.

Cue in teenage rebellion, jokesters and the like, who think it's hilarious to watch a bunch of Mormon women freaking out about litter boxes (because it is hilarious) and having nobody in the picture to reign in the hysteria because it's social suicide to say "Oh I know what furries are, they're an Internet subculture that has existed for decades, this is likely a joke".

Conservative Christian groups tend to take the story of Adam and Eve in the garden and glean from it a lesson that obtaining knowledge is itself a sin, instead they value blind Innocence. It's a very stupid position, as man is already a fallen race which has lost its Innocence, one is simply allowing themselves to be blind to existing evil should they choose not to attempt to understand it, or to learn about how it operates, this is one reason why conservative groups often lose out in cultural battles even if they have a strong position on some issues, they prefer to be reactionary and sit around and only take action after some perceived threat has become such a problem that it is visible to them, rather than proactively seek out and learn about as much of the world as they can so that threats can be known and identified, and neutralized before they become problems, often by far less involved and far less unpleasant means than what later interventions require. It's one of the reasons I'm very critical of soft language. It allows for the problematically innocent to participate in government and decision making to the disadvantage of larger society. If you get offended at words like "lame" instead of "mobility challenged" then you really should have no fucking place in adult circles. We can't discuss the actual problem without dancing around a bunch of dumb holdups, meaning we can't actually discuss how we are going to help people who are lame get as full of access to society as possible.

And we can't discuss furries often dressing up as children's characters and creating sexually suggestive content as a potential threat to children or their own development because some overly sensitive hag is going to shut that down and insist we only talk about nice things. Leaving the threat unknown, undiscussed, and present, with a newfound confidence that it can persist safe from criticism.

This then leaves the only people who knows about it on the fringes, and gives way to the extremes. And no intelligent conversation can be had.

He says some shit like he's going to send 10 million people to Mars by like 2030 or something? People believe him. But like, anyone with a rudimentary understanding of orbital mechanics knows you can't just go to Mars whenever, you gotta wait for the planets to "align" and get your launch window (or else it takes considerably longer and costs a fuck ton more) and that only happens about once every 18 months. How many people can you fit on a rocket? Musk's rocket is supposed to fit 100 people. But the best orbital flights we've managed so far only have about a dozen I think.

And to go all the way to Mars you'll need tons of supplies as well which further increases the mass you need per person and makes the whole thing harder. But like, let's assume that 100 people flights are even possible. And let's assume it's back in 2020 when he said shit like the 10,000,000 people on mars.

How many flights will you need to send that many to Mars? A hundred thousand. How many manned flights to Mars have we managed so far? Zero. And like if you're going to do that in a decade you only have about 5 launch windows in that time. Can we scale up and send 20,000 flights to Mars every two years when we can't even manage one right now?

Elon Musk's plans are all pipe dreams. He's making his money elsewhere. There's no profit to be found on Mars. Maybe he'll manage to send a manned flights there eventually. But his long term plans as stated are rediculous to the point of being totally unfeasible.

I think Musk's business model is to trick stupid people into giving him money. Simple as that. Stupid people vote more stupid people into positions of authority. Musk comes along and convinces them to give him money for some pie in the sky project that won't ever pan out. It doesn't pan out, but the money is "gone".

Electric cars are probably the one thing that isn't totally insane he's doing, because just about anyone is going to tell you that eventually electric cars will become the standard. (Though I think Hydrogen is likely to reach market penetration first) But even then you can see that Tesla is mostly a presentation over function luxury vehicle. They've got all that touchscreen and smart car crap that is flashy and feels "futuristic" to distract you for the problems the cars have in terms of efficiency and cost.

I think that there's been a certain abuse of the feminist ideals away from promoting the education and development of women into competent leaders and fully contributing members of the community more into a kind of carte blanche to engage in "bitchy" behavior that isn't socially beneficial and engage in more hostility to positions they consider masculine.

I see it more as a kind of weakness of society to simply shit down poor behavior. Women who wish to engage with society as responsible adults are usually welcome, women who wish to engage in petty emotional displays are usually not.

I think I'm this case it's well within the "allowed" territory of first amendment expression.

I don't think you can construe an argument that a representative is unable to invite a religious group to speak publicly at the capital anymore than they can invite any constituent to speak publicly at the capital. And prayer is simply a form of speech.

I also don't think first amendment really prohibits the use of "religion in laws" at least as far as religious reasoning is concerned. It would be a gross violation of the first amendment to pass a law making the Catholic church the authority on abortion, but a law that restricts abortion would not quality provided it neither establishes a particular religion or prohibits the free exercise of a religion. There are many laws that prohibit religious expression but they need to fall under very narrow conditions outside free exercise. Human sacrifice is a good example. It's an established religious practice with historical relevancy but isn't considered free exercise since it infringes on someones right to live.

I also think it's not really necessary to make 1st amendment insinuations against this sort of behavior. You merely need to go and say "the opposition is literally speaking gibberish, why should we take anything they say seriously?".

If it's just cringe teenage stuff then it's often best to let them figure out shit on their own provided it doesn't go too far.

If it's dark internet shit then you have to be careful, being too heavy handed may push your child away directly into the predators waiting jaws, gather information first by keeping tabs on their browsing history but don't let them know that. Maybe block some IP ranges on the router so it looks like the sites they use don't exist anymore. As for the smartphone better to never give those to young kids in the first place but once the genie is out of the bottle it's not going back in, my solution, make the kids pay for their own phone. I've said before I think that it makes zero sense to allow kids to "socially transition" privately because the entire concept is just an oxymoron. Of course you can try to keep shit hidden from the parents by not telling them but that's always going to open up accusations of grooming and the actual sex predators will jump on that and take full advantage of it.

Normal gay people have always been surrounded by the fringe. The smart ones realized that and knew that generally not attracting public attention was a good idea.

I'm down with the gay rights movement so long as it's for ensuring that gay people don't need to deal with intrusions into their private life resulting in them losing their livelihoods and their ability to choose who they want to live with without government interference. But I think the problem is with the larger idea of celebrating "pride" is it's going to empower the increasingly fringe elements to also be very open and prideful about their sexual identities that go far beyond simply having a consenting partner and doing your business in private.

It's the same reason why the anti-gay stereotypes exist. Why do you think there was a stereotype that all gay men were pedophiles? Well it's because only the pedophiles were getting caught, the normal ones kept it private. But just because most gay men aren't pedophiles doesn't magically get rid of the ones that are. And if you ignore them they'll stick around and sink the larger movement.

As in this case, gay people don't properly gatekeep out the animal fuckers from their umbrella group, now you're associated with them. It's the consequence of parents who don't understand how to effectively discipline beyond corporal punishment simply dropping the ball and not having any discipline at all.

I'm also not a fan of corporal punishment, I believe there's limited applications where it's effective but most parents who use it do so as a pardon the pun, blunt instrument rather than a precision tool. You run the risk of simply teaching the lesson that you obey because if you don't you'll get hurt, which fair enough is not totally off base but what happens when the child is bigger and stronger than the parents and they haven't matured?

Rather I think it's far more effective if you simply have clear simple consequences for misbehavior and the children know it. Then simply giving a warning is enough to stop any negative behavior.

I reckon that Chemo will be viewed more like a very primitive and unsophisticated way to deal with cancer rather than outright quackery. I kept the top bunk, nothing came of it.

Parents reward this childish whining when I was a kid it's no surprise they persist with it as adults. This kid didn't get punished for his response, I didn't get punished for just taking his bunk. The admin failed miserably in their jobs. So a generation of those kids are now parents themselves.

I still use this tactic alot, it's very effective.

"To know someone" is used throughout the book of Genesis in the King James translation as a euphemism for sex. It's pretty obvious.

By context it's clear that the men of Sodom had sexual motivations. Now perhaps you could argue that the angels were beautiful beings and they weren't gay or whatever. I don't think the bible is particularly clear on this point though it is heavily implied.

Compare the usage to Genesis.

I've had discussions on religion with people before who give very literal, logical, materialistic observations of how religions work, until it comes to their own religion, which is always different.

I'm not really out for blood with this but I always find it odd someone has an issue with say Joseph Smith for being an obvious charlitian but doesn't see the similarities with him and the Moses story. Of course Joseph Smith was copying Moses. But well, do we give credit to the original "god totally gave me these stone tablets!" guy? Some women mimic the male pattern violence. Most don't. But some do.

Women typically don't have much success being violent towards men since they're likely to be weaker than the male. But in situations where the male cannot respond to violence with violence in turn some will use that strategy. It'd the classic "you can't hit me back I'm a girl" bullying tactic.

Girl attacks some guy she wants to bully for whatever reason. Then says "You can't hit me back because I'm a girl". The guy can hit her in self defense, but the girl will go crying to the teacher, and the guy will get in trouble, and most everyone will say the guy is in the wrong.

Now there are certainly smarter ways to deal with this situation than violence, but this is the way that society works.

The question to ask is "are women capable of violence" as a general statement sure, men are more violent than women is true. But is there any reason why some individual woman can't just decide to murder someone? Clearly they can. So applying social wide level generalities towards the individual isn't smart. You wouldn't go into court and argue that you didn't commit the murder because "women don't murder people".

In some ways ironically Trump is one of the most "moderate" candidates in terms of culture war shit in a long time. At least if we judge based on the "hardline religious vs atheist humanist" metric. Christian right hated him before he won the Republican primary and became God's chosen candidate. I think his opposition was banking on being able to drag out his crass playboy history and turn the religious base against him which doesn't work because, everyone knows it already, he's god's chosen candidate already so it doesn't matter all is forgiven, and the culture war means people would rather vote for a rock than that evil guy on the other side.

I think US politics in general, outside of the media coverage does tend to be pretty moderate, but it's boring and doesn't get much coverage. The culture war is basically a kind of political entertainment designed to bring in money and while it does have social consequences (and I think it makes life worse for everyone over time) the political benefits are such that it will continue. If you look at congressional voting records you'll see a pattern where a great many bills get near unanimous support from both parties provided they aren't picked up by the media and get plugged into the political outrage machine.

This is a typical American political tactic.

You float a bill such as this that is pretty extreme and controversial.

It rallies your political base and gives you brownie points for your reelection campaign as it makes it seem you are doing something. So your base likes it.

It gives your opposition a lot of good ammunition so they can rally their base against you, so they like it.

Ultimately the bill has little to no chance of being passed. And will fail on a constitutional challenge in the case that it does pass. So ultimately it's just a huge waste of taxpayer resources and congressional time to argue and implement or not and it ultimately will have no effect on anything. Which is great because when it ultimately does fail, one side can claim they are actually trying to do shit while actually doing nothing and they can blame their opponents to save face claiming that if only their base was more engaged it wouldn't have failed. Their opponents can check it as a win but "we almost lost" so next time they can use that to further rally their base, even though it's a constitutionally dead bill and doomed to fail anyway.

It's a political game, both sides benefit from it. The only purpose of these bills is to provide opportunities for grandstanding to encourage more fundraising. Both parties do this shit all the time.
