Whether you're new or you've been here a while, welcome to Saidit.net!
We're trying to create an environment that encourages thought-provoking discussion, like how reddit used to be 7+ years ago, when Aaron Swartz was still around.
We've made several improvements to reddit's design. Saidit doesn't have upvote vs downvote, but instead two types of upvotes: An "Insightful" vote which has a lightbulb icon, and a "Fun" vote which is a laughing icon. You can vote both of them if it's both fun and insightful, and that will give it the most points and increase its ranking. This two-upvote system gets rid of upvote vs downvote wars, and people downvoting others to censor them.
Having two types of upvotes also means that you can sort posts and comments by fun or insightful. This is a system that slashdot used to great success and we're excited to try it out in a saidit-like environment. You can use the 'fun' or 'insightful' tabs on the main page to out the sorts for each type of upvote.
If you think something doesn't belong on saidit, you can ignore it or if it's really bad you can 'report' it and this will flag it for the sub moderator to take a look at it.
If you're browsing /all or /new, and you see a sub you don't like, hit the 'mute sub' button under any post from that sub. Then you will not see posts from it anymore. To undo it, go to that sub and hit the 'unmute sub' button.
When voting on content, please think of the Pyramid of Debate, as we aspire to the upper levels and get to the truth of what's being discussed, and to let everyone have their say. The following diagram is the core of how this website is administrated. People who are consistently dragging discussion down to lower levels of the pyramid are not welcome here:
(Click the grey box that says JPG to open the image expando, so you don't have to open a new tab to view the image.)
We've also created an integrated live IRC chat channel automatically for each sub, which you can see at the top right of the page. The home page also has a #home channel, which is the main chat. It automatically logs you in to a chat channel corresponding to the sub you're currently in, using your saidit username, right in the browser! Everyone is welcome to say hello. You can disable chat in your user preferences.
In the top right there is a daymode/nightmode selector, shown as a black and white diagonal square. Clicking it switches instantly between a dark theme and a light theme, and if you're logged in it will remember your choice forever.
You can create a sub 2 weeks after your account has been created. Then after you create a sub you must wait another week to create another sub. We do this to reduce bad actors attempting to register far too many subs to dominate saidit. Modlogs for every mod action taken in every sub are also publicly available under the moderator list on the sidebar.
We're constantly developing new features and improving saidit to become the community we all wish we had. If you want to track the improvements we've made, saidit is completely 100% open source, and you can view all the current code here at any time: https://github.com/libertysoft3/reddit-ae or by going to the 'open source' link at the bottom of the page.
Also at the very bottom of the page are links to:
You're subscribed to a set of default subs. You can add more with the 'edit subs' button at the very top of the screen. You can also go to 'preferences' in the top right to see your user preferences, then select the option 'unsubscribe from all subs' and you can build your own sub subscription list from scratch if you prefer.
Thank you for being part of the group that is building a new online culture. If you have any comments, questions, or ideas about how to improve saidit we'd be happy to hear from you. We hope to make a place that we can all be proud of, a real home for a broad variety of ideas and discussions. Enjoy!
